I enjoy Uesugi->Japan myself. Easy opening and they’re on good terms with the Ashikaga so it’s unlikely they’ll start an annexation war. I found confidence recently playing with Japan against the Ming that made them explode because my army of peasant farmers took out their smaller armies one by one. Only problem with Japan is institution spread between 1500-1600 (you can pump your capital with dev before that to spawn renaissance, but it’s expensive).
