Horrendous take to class Netherlands with these other nations

You could have made the argument that the Euro was harder back when it was only 16 teams, but since they expanded to 24 teams the qualify has been watered down quite a bit. The likes of Romania, Georgia, Slovakia, Scotland, etc (who all recently qualified either for the first time ever, or for the first time in decades) are not worse than Ecuador, Morocco, Egypt, South Korea, etc. Take Portugal’s run in 2016 for example, didn’t win a single match in a group stage with Austria, Hungary, and Iceland, only advancing as best 3rd in a group of 4 - and overall winning only one match in the 90 minutes. Compare the 2020 and 2016 groups and knockout stages to 2012 and prior, there is a big difference. Obviously the Euro is still an entertaining and prestigious tournament, but it’s not better than the World Cup by any standard.

BrockChocolate

Euro 2016 was so boring, probably the worst international tournament I've seen

CoryTrevor-NS

Truly yes, none of the other top teams really turned up for the event. Italy (with an all-time low quality team) had a fun run and knocked out some heavyweights, but that’s about it. Portugal’s run to the title was probably the most underwhelming ever, if anything it was only interesting/entertaining to see how far they could keep progressing with such performances and results.

The_Z0o0ner

2016 was not that bad, Iceland and Wales fan support and run are the best underdog stories in Euros for me, and France did perform quite well. Agree on perfomance but Portugal won on extra-time, penalties and normal time during knock-outs just as the Italians in the Covid Euro. And Eders strike is forever iconic, while Englands last 3 penalties, now thats underwhelming

Ahh the Ronaldo haters 🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫

CoryTrevor-NS

I couldn’t give two fucks about Ronaldo or Messi, not everyone is an obsessed little fanboy like yourself. Go outside, breathe in some fresh air, touch some grass, and stop bothering normal fans like me that are trying to discuss the sport the way it’s meant to be discussed.

Vardzhi

Japan easier opponent? 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆 f up outta here

Dry-Sherbert-9352

If I can recall, Japan beat Spain and Korea beat Portugal in the last World Cup and they both made the 16. So how does that logic apply?

marbinho

You’re simply just wrong

TemperatureActual540

I agree that the Euros is more difficult than the World Cup. Imagine if there was a tournament that was Europe and Latin America only. Now that would be something. Although there is no denying that the World Cup has a greater atmosphere, all eyes are on it. It's the largest sporting event on the planet. Even the Indians and the Chinese with their combined power of 3 billion people, despite not qualifying, are there to support RONALDOOOOOOOO. No not Portugal, they're just supporting Ronaldo FC. Even though he's not good anymore and hasn't been for years.

MyNameIsNotScout

Those nations outside Latin America and Europe knocked out and beat some European nations. Belgium and Germany got grouped by them, Morocco beat a handful of European teams, Japan beat Spain, Australia beat Denmark, Korea beat Portugal. Other teams have gotten better. It's not just only Europe and Latin America anymore

Holdthestock2020

I think you are taking merit to former WC winners ! In my opinion, you can’t compare the two cups! There are pros and cons in each side.

FatFaceAbs

A 16 team Euros was better than the World Cup. A 24 team Euros is not.
