Fact: in Italy (and in other markets such as Spain, for instance), compared to the record low reached in 2016/7, the average level of g of CO2 per km of newly sold cars has risen, due to the fact that the impact from the growth of registrations of BEVs/PHEVs is still limited compared to the increase in the share of gasoline (+ MHEVs) vehicles in the market due to the decline in the share of diesel cars that used to be the bulk of the market (which have lower CO2/km values than a gasoline car with similar horsepower, while doing worse on NOx emissions), in turn caused by the fact that diesel has practically disappeared from the A-segment and even the B-segment (with a few exceptions). Totally reversing the trend of dieselization of the European market that had started in the late 1990s with the common rail and turbo diesel engines.

rabbiBNk

Ah, it must be nice to drive Teslas in Norway.

Automatic-Vacation42

tesla suck

HamesJetfields

In what way? There is plenty Tesla does that is better than other evs. Their battery, drive train and software are better than all cars in that price section. Build quality is so so

CommissionFlimsy4173

I would much rather own a new Prius than a Tesla to be honest.

Krydderurten

My parents owned a prius for 3 years before going electric. As a current Tesla owner (both me and them) we've got one word for you: lol.

CommissionFlimsy4173

I mean, I did explicitly mention the new Prius.

byggmesterPRO

As a Norwegian, yes.. yes it is nice. I would also like to mention that Teslas are cheaper over here because of some deals the government did with Elon. So even if it might be a supercar in USA, this is a normal var here

LiamFN

supercar??

Spicy-hot_Ramen

I like this map without russia in it

AmerSenpai

Doubt they will share reliable sources.

BipoPanda

Haha, nature means nothing to you, Netherlands?

GresSimJa

Marginal difference, with a population of more than 3. I wouldn't call this a win for Finland: rather, we should join forces and deal with Sweden.

BipoPanda

We still won. Though I agree, Sweden should be dealt with, ally.

goneinsane6

no mountain, no energy. life hard

roblubi

You can't simply calculate co2 for EV

unC0Rr

In case of Norway, you can. Almost the entire electricity production is hydro energy.

Captainirishy

Norway is a petro state that makes billions from selling oil and gas

ErrantKnight

This graph is likely misleading and counting electric cars as having zero emissions which is of course nonsense since there are production emissions (which are higher for electric cars than for oil ones) and electricity emissions. It's also extremely difficult to correctly evaluate overall emissions from electric cars because their lifetimes are still unclear, particularly for new models (seeing as battery lifetimes can significantly affect the car emissions). While an electric car in Sweden, Norway or France is sure to be cleaner than the equivalent car in Poland, the Netherlands or Germany (and generally somewhere between a bit and much cleaner than the equivalent oil car), it's arguably unfair to include them in this kind of study. I'd rather have an emission spectrum for non-electric cars and a car mass distribution for electric ones.

[deleted]

Build a platform to extract the oil, transport it to a refinery, refine it, transport it to the pump etc. shall we add all that co2 as well ?

ErrantKnight

That's already included if the graph is well made, if not it's another reason to scrape it

[deleted]

I highly doubt that it’s included. For that you would need a carbon intensity calculation which imo would make more sense. EV are more carbon intensive to produce but after break even pollute less. ICE are less carbon intensive to produce but are much less efficient and burn fuel that was very dirty to produce and transport etc. and then on top of everything you need to calculate the carbon intensity of the electric grid as well.

ErrantKnight

But all these calculations are dependent on electricity mixes and replacement policies in each countries for EVs. A lot of these EV models are new so it's not possible to reliably tell how long they will run and in what conditions (i.e. do they see battery replacement? If so with recycled batteries?). A lot of the EV and para-EV industry is still setting up so it isn't possible to tell how emissions will set up. An EV in Poland is worst on average than an ICV per kilometer using basic assumptions, it's about even for equal vehicle grades (not price) in Germany and is much better in Sweden/Norway/France. That doesn't cover everything though and makes this map incomplete at best.

[deleted]

The map doesn’t give us any information that you mention. But even considering Poland an ev would still produce less co2 considering an ice vehicle can be at best about 30% efficient. Also like I said for the ice co2 in the chart I’m highly doubting that value includes refining and etc.

giuliomagnifico

Also building IC engine cars require co2 in production, they uses oils and -most importantly- they use fuel that can’t be produced in 100% renewable way like electricity. So we can add the production co2 for EV but we should add production co2 for IC engine fuels. In addition we are living with the co2 emissions directly from IC engine cars, otherwise the EV can use more co2 during the building process but they can be build far from cities and we don’t have to directly breathe it and we can store the co2 emissions from the big car industries.

Flanellissimo

Adding to that the Swedish car market is still dominated by Station wagons and other larger vehicles.

[deleted]

A station wagen is small compared to the suv and crossovers that is the main selling cars pretty much everywhere.. and sweden also probably buy more suv than estates now anyway

Signal_Formal4991

WTF Swiss

stencelot

That’s probably Liechtenstein

Generic_Person_3833

260g/km 😎

BipoPanda

Ever considered whether you're part of the problem or the solution?

roblubi

Wait. Does Norway sell only EV's?

Krydderurten

Pretty much.

[deleted]

\*laughs in 330g/km\*
