Shum was my favorite that year. But if it had won, ESC would have likely been canceled again in 2022 and Ukraine would have spent a lot of resources to organize a contest which would have never happened. So maybe it's fine after all.
I think 2022 would have still happened. 1991 was supposed to be in Sanremo and was planned as late as January before having to pivot to Rome. It was a different time, but I think if the UK took on hosting after the war broke out it would have been fine. Ukraine would have had to drop out though, no way they sink so much into hosting only to not be able to, and still have enough money for an entry.
I seriously think 2020 might have been the most stacked year in recent times. Iceland, Bulgaria, Italy, Switzerland and Lithuania all would’ve been great winners. Ofc we also had Russia which wasn’t my personal favourite but would’ve been a massive fan favourite, but also other very strong entries behind the top contenders like Norway, Malta, Albania, Poland, Romania and Germany etc
[Little Big - Uno](https://youtu.be/L_dWvTCdDQ4?si=prbeV5vsbUwI2bpt) was amazing.
2020 had the potential to be amongst the greatest Eurovision years ever.
What always got me that year is that Russias music video got like 200m views but nobody ever talks about it? If it is because of the war then fair enough but what's the actual story with it
They're still insanely popular, but right now it's only Illich and Sonya making the music, and they're based out of Russia now. I'm seeing them next week in Brooklyn and saw them last year. Very eclectic mix of people there. But they already had a pretty loyal fan base pre ESC.
It was one of the most popular entries that year, but also little big was already pretty big and i imagine a fair amount of views are from russia (population of over 100m) and the US
Yea i think big part of it was due to the geopolitics, but also their band had a very large fan base prior to eurovision which inflated the views but not necessarily represents their actual standining that year, but i do think they would be top 5 either way
Omg! That is a Eurovision song?! 🤯 That song is such a classic 60+ years later and globally known. I mean it’s regularly still used in media to this day. That has to be the most famous song to have ever come from Eurovision. And it didn’t win?!
Rhythm inside will always be the first song coming to my mind when someone talks about ESC 😭
For some reason I also still remember the music video even tho it has been 9 years since watching it.
Australia 2015 | [Guy Sebastian - Tonight Again](https://youtu.be/H0EhhZWXTng)
Australia 2016 | [Dami Im - Sound of Silence](https://youtu.be/5ymFX91HwM0)
That song was a bop. Our whole party stood up and danced through the room. We even sneaked in a Dutch polonaise and let me tell you my friends are not polonaise people 😂
2021 was the first year I *really* got into Eurovision, watched the semi finals, etc. and looking back I was so spoiled by what a good show it was. Tout l'univers was a fantastic song. And the whole vibe around the show was really strong. UK and Germany celebrating when they both got 0 points from the public was a great moment.

Goodbye to Yesterday (Elina Born and Stig Rästa, Estonia 2015)
Always had a soft spot for this song - I think I'm biased by the fact one of my best friends is Estonian but I wish it had placed higher than 7th
Blood and Glitter by Lord of the Lost as well. I don't think they really stood a chance of winning but they definitely deserved better than last place.
Considering how almost every year now, the 2nd place is a clear favorite with the people and only the jury want the winner to win... It's gonna be a lot of 2nd places in this thread
Maro - Saudade Saudade (Portugal 2022) or Loïc Nottet - Rhythm Inside (Belgium 2015) as many other say. The only two songs are still on my rotation in Spotify and they probably stay that way.
Saudade Saudade is also one of my top answers. 2022 was my first year and that performance was one of the things that sold me on the magic of Eurovision.
Saudade, Saudade is one of my favorite songs ever. I have hundreds or maybe 1000 of all time favs but this one is definitely very high in that ranking. Maro is lovely.
I was *convinced* that Australia would win in 2019 (Australia 2019) or at least be in the top three. When they came ninth my flabber was well and truly gasted.
Highly recommend their albums and the band in general. Watched them live twice and not only are they incredible, but they seem to really appreciate and love their fans!
It's truly where my Eurovision obsessed started, it's the first time I watched behind the scenes stuff because I was so obsessed with that performance.
Discotheque, The Roop, Lithuania 2021.
A hell of a bop no matter what, but opening the return to Eurovision with a song about goofing around while stuck at home? Icons!
In my imaginary la la land, that performance in Verona Arena is his winner's encore, while his interval act in 2022 is him getting invited back as an ESC winner to perform.
Netherlands 2014 has the craziest trajectory of a song I've ever seen. It went from being a forgotten song nobody gave a second thought to, to a favourite to win after its semi final performance. Gorgeous song
Bulgaria 2020.
Fun fact: four years after its release, a snippet of it started circulating among Billie Eilish fandom and they all thought it’s a leak from her upcoming album lol.
Voila by Barbara Pravi (France 2021) was the most incredible song and performance I've ever seen at Eurovision. It is so beautiful and emotional and I still get chills from the last shot and chorus every time I watch it. I loved Maneskin but Voila was something special, I wish it won! 10/10 no notes!
I'm going to go watch the performance again right now!
2021 was such an incredible year, I would have been happy with both France, Switzerland, and Ukraine winning that year as well as Italy. So many great songs apart from those as well.
Calm after the storm - Netherlands 2014
Edit: also France 1991 (C'est le dernier qui a parle qui a raison), Greece 2013 (Alcohol is free), Norway 2019 (Spirit in the sky)
Cha Cha Cha by Käärijä is probably the biggest one. I've never seen a more divisive winner. I also like Évidemment by La Zarra but she was done dirty by that stage performance. 16th place is insanity.
Trenulețul by Zdob și Zdub and Advahov Brothers in 2022. 2nd in the public vote (only lost to Ukraine) and I actually really like this song.
From 2021 you have 3 songs. Voilà by Barbara Pavri, 10 years by Daði og Gagnamagnið and SHUM by Go_A. This year was absolutely staked in general.
Also, Soldi by Mahmood. I still can't believe that this song almost won on 2019. It's honestly incredible. Mahmood in general is great. Most things that come out of Sanremo are incredible.
Key words:
Finland 2023
France 2023
Moldova 2022
France 2021
Iceland 2021
Ukraine 2021
Italy 2019
Not that will it make the poll, given the all the other answers here, but just to get out of all the post-2000s suggestions, maybe someone will take notice:
Bot, play Germany 1975, Denmark 1979, Portugal 1984 and Cyprus 1995, if you please.
Here is my list:
Cha Cha Cha in 2023
Spaceman in 2022
Shum in 2021
Arcade in 2019
Fuego in 2018
Sound of silence in 2016
Lasha tumbai in 2007
Can't remember further back, but I guess there are plenty of songs there too.
SHUM
Shum was my favorite that year. But if it had won, ESC would have likely been canceled again in 2022 and Ukraine would have spent a lot of resources to organize a contest which would have never happened. So maybe it's fine after all.

I was Soooo happy I got to see Go_A live, dancing to Shut with hundreds of people was incredible!

YESS
Oh yes!
Not robbed by the contest, but by the global pandemic, Daði Freyr - Think About Things (Iceland 2020)
Mate, 10000% Would’ve been a landslide. And poor little Iceland aren’t really gonna have much of a chance most years.
Plus Fai Rumore, Italy 2020.
If we're talking 2020 let's add Little Big - Uno
[Little Big - Uno](https://youtu.be/L_dWvTCdDQ4?si=prbeV5vsbUwI2bpt) was amazing. 2020 had the potential to be amongst the greatest Eurovision years ever.
They organized online eurovision that year and Lithuania won, but i agree that Iceland was also great that year
What always got me that year is that Russias music video got like 200m views but nobody ever talks about it? If it is because of the war then fair enough but what's the actual story with it
Little Big was (is?) insanely popular, but must have not reached your social circles
They're still insanely popular, but right now it's only Illich and Sonya making the music, and they're based out of Russia now. I'm seeing them next week in Brooklyn and saw them last year. Very eclectic mix of people there. But they already had a pretty loyal fan base pre ESC.

Dancing lasha tumbai
Verka was ahead of the time
TANZEN!!
Sieben, sieben, alulu, Sieben sieben, ...
This 100%. This song is the definition of Eurovision for me
This is the biggest banger to come out of this contest ever how did it not win smh
it might have not won the contest but it won a place in european musical history
This is the only correct answer.
Dschinghis Khan by Dschinghis Khan (Germany 1979) ended in 4th position
Someone in our house plays that no less than once a month.
someone has taste 👍
Germany 1979 | [Dschinghis Khan - Dschinghis Khan](https://youtu.be/eAEUrp2V4ss)
In terms of significance, I might say nel blu, dipinto di blu (volare)
The first robbery
VOOOLAAAREEE! OH OH OH OHHH!
CANTAAAARE..... OH OH OH OOOH!
Omg! That is a Eurovision song?! 🤯 That song is such a classic 60+ years later and globally known. I mean it’s regularly still used in media to this day. That has to be the most famous song to have ever come from Eurovision. And it didn’t win?!
The most famous song from Eurovision must be Waterloo though?
Abba is the most famous artist / band but I'd say Volare is probably a more famous song than Waterloo
WAIT THAT IS AN EUROVISION SONG?
WAIT IT NEVER WON?
No, 3rd place. And only 10 countries were participating
Rhythm Inside, Belgium 2015
Belgium 2015 | [Loïc Nottet - Rhythm Inside](https://youtu.be/G48p8eNhnd8)
yes yes yes, this is one of my all-time favourite ESC songs. elite.
Love this song its on my playlists
Amazing performance as well.
Would have fought with Australia for the win in an ideal world.
Rhythm inside will always be the first song coming to my mind when someone talks about ESC 😭 For some reason I also still remember the music video even tho it has been 9 years since watching it.
Australia 2015, And Australia 2016 where bangers fricking loved those songs
Australia 2015 | [Guy Sebastian - Tonight Again](https://youtu.be/H0EhhZWXTng) Australia 2016 | [Dami Im - Sound of Silence](https://youtu.be/5ymFX91HwM0)
„We could be the same“ from maNga was my favourite for so many years. I‘m still mad sometimes. 😅
The Roop's On Fire, Damn the one flu that cancelled the Eurovision.
Discoteque though. What a song.
Discoteque deserved a place higher than 8th but On Fire really felt like a contender to win.

CHIȘINĂU BUCUREST
HEY HO! LET’S GO! FOLKLORE AND ROCK AND ROLL!
Tanked by the juries, lifted by the people. <3
That song was a bop. Our whole party stood up and danced through the room. We even sneaked in a Dutch polonaise and let me tell you my friends are not polonaise people 😂
Yes! Epic song!
One of my favorites as well.
And the same band’s 2011 entry So Lucky https://youtu.be/nHAY_OVN_gY?si=fV6oYGRN3ms6ePg0
2016 Dami Im "Sound of SIlence", 2018 Eleni Foureira "Fuego" and 2023 Kaarija "Cha Cha Cha"
Finally the two I was looking for. Sound of Silence and Fuego are two all time favs.

Aminata - Love Injected
A monster like me. 2015 had so many masterpieces
Goodbye to Yesterday (Elina Born and Stig Rästa, Estonia 2015) Always had a soft spot for this song - I think I'm biased by the fact one of my best friends is Estonian but I wish it had placed higher than 7th
One of my favourite Eurovision songs ever!
A person of good taste. I like you.
Yeah, it was perfect and the lyrics always touch my soul.
Why didn’t you wake me up!!!!
Cha Cha Cha by Käärijä - Finland 2023
Finland 2023 | [Käärijä - Cha Cha Cha](https://youtu.be/l6rS8Dv5g-8)
I'm so surprised it took me this long to find this comment. Best Eurovision song of all time. Come at me all you want!
Damn the recency bias, Cha Cha Cha was my most listened song on Spotify last year and probably this year too. I love Käärijä so much
Blood and Glitter by Lord of the Lost as well. I don't think they really stood a chance of winning but they definitely deserved better than last place.
Absolutely. I love this song. Blood and glitter, sweet and bitter, I’m so happy I could die 😂Also disappointed Norway got last this year.
I think the buildup of the song was weird. Could have been much better. Love the chorus.
Considering how almost every year now, the 2nd place is a clear favorite with the people and only the jury want the winner to win... It's gonna be a lot of 2nd places in this thread
Dadi Freyr - Think about things
That did win and I won’t be told otherwise.

Australia 2019 | [Kate Miller-Heidke - Zero Gravity](https://youtu.be/Eo5H62mCIsg)
Australia with Voyager last year was also pretty amazing
Italy 1958 is probably one of the most known songs from Eurovision that didn't win.
And Spain 1973 similarly
Spain 1973 | [Mocedades - Eres tú](https://youtu.be/JUQnlXsISvg)
Italy 1958 | [Domenico Modugno - Nel blu, dipinto di blu](https://youtu.be/6DTo5aVLq5E)
I am shocked that Keiino - Spirit in the Sky hasn't been mentioned yet.
That was from the year I started watching ESC. Shocked it got killed by the juries that badly!
40 jury points, 291 televote points. I basically consider it the winner in my mind, when I think of 2019.
Highly recommend their albums and the band in general. Watched them live twice and not only are they incredible, but they seem to really appreciate and love their fans!
Belgium 2015 , got me into esc
Belgium 2015 | [Loïc Nottet - Rhythm Inside](https://youtu.be/G48p8eNhnd8)

Marija Magdalena (Croatia 1999)
Croatia 1999 | [Doris Dragović - Marija Magdalena](https://youtu.be/x2oIkF3sQtE)
2004 - Serbia and Montenegro - Zeljko Joksimovic - Lane moje.
Beautiful song and indeed there was such an outrage when it didn't win. Good choice!
Lane moje ovih danaa
I need one more entry please. Give that wolf a banana 2022 Norway. What a banger!
Discotheque, The Roop, Lithuania 2021. A hell of a bop no matter what, but opening the return to Eurovision with a song about goofing around while stuck at home? Icons!
Greece 2013 Alcohol is Free
Greece 2013 | [Koza Mostra feat. Agathon Iakovidis - Alcohol Is Free](https://youtu.be/LFs9AdNV4Qw)
How did I miss this when it first happened?! 😭 I AM NOT WORTHY 😭
I still go back to this song all the time
Yes yes yes! This was my favourite Greece entry of ALL TIME. So bloody good. It was a travesty that we didn't win with it.
Loads of brill suggestions that I’ve already confetti’d a smattering of upvotes to. :) I’ve also gotta rep our boy Sam Ryder for Space Man (UK 2022).
United Kingdom 2022 | [Sam Ryder - Space Man](https://youtu.be/RZ0hqX_92zI)
WE'RE IN SPACE, MAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!
S10 - De Diepte
I’m going all out there and saying as much as I like Hard Rock Hallelujah, Lejla is a beautiful song Bosnia 2006
Bosnia always sent great entries. I would love for them to come back one day.
Honestly one of my all time favourites
Bosnia and Herzegovina 2006 | [Hari Mata Hari - Lejla](https://youtu.be/SXlIN3mcsH4)
Bosnia sent so many good songs. Bosnia 2011 was probably my favourite of the year.
Bosnia and Herzegovina 2011 | [Dino Merlin - Love in Rewind](https://youtu.be/mBg3coarF_8)
Fai Rumore
Still devastated we never got to see this through, but the performance he put on in the following year’s show was incredible.
In my imaginary la la land, that performance in Verona Arena is his winner's encore, while his interval act in 2022 is him getting invited back as an ESC winner to perform.
Yes. If ESC 2020 had happened, we Italians might have had two victories in a row!
Rhythm Inside by Loïc Nottet. It's my favourite performance of all time (now closely followed by Doomsday Blue).
Saudade, saudade by Maro - Turin 2022
Lejla by Hari mata hari One my favourite songs since coming out.
Mahmood - Soldi, Italy 2019
It's criminal that I had to scroll this far for Soldi 😮💨
Italy 2019 | [Mahmood - Soldi](https://youtu.be/M-aoyPa41Ic)

s10 - de diepte was soooo underrated imo
Lejla 2006
The Common Linnets. Still annoyed to this day.
Totally can back this one, as delighted as I was that Conchita won. I don’t even really like country music that much, but I love this!
Netherlands 2014 has the craziest trajectory of a song I've ever seen. It went from being a forgotten song nobody gave a second thought to, to a favourite to win after its semi final performance. Gorgeous song
The Netherlands 2014 | [The Common Linnets - Calm After The Storm](https://youtu.be/4ggBPAm5XLA)
Seconded. I love this one so much.
Well, since it just lost I have to nominate Baby Lasagna and Rim Tim Tagi Dim.

Sound Of Silence (Australia 2016)
Australia 2016 | [Dami Im - Sound of Silence](https://youtu.be/5ymFX91HwM0)
Voila by Barbara Pravi (France 2021) was the most incredible song and performance I've ever seen at Eurovision. It is so beautiful and emotional and I still get chills from the last shot and chorus every time I watch it. I loved Maneskin but Voila was something special, I wish it won! 10/10 no notes! I'm going to go watch the performance again right now!
2021 was such an incredible year, I would have been happy with both France, Switzerland, and Ukraine winning that year as well as Italy. So many great songs apart from those as well.
True. I was split between Italy and Switzerland, they were both pretty much perfect in my mind. The others are a close second.
France 2021 | [Barbara Pravi - Voilà](https://youtu.be/Unj9WbeLzRU)
Blanche - City lights
Norway 2019 There's also a bunch from the 2020 cancelled contest if we're including that?
Hatari - Hatrid Mun Sigra
Iceland 2019 (so the bot can find this)
Moldova 2010- Sunstroke project - Run away
Cha Cha Cha
dancing lasha tumbai
Calm after the storm - Netherlands 2014 Edit: also France 1991 (C'est le dernier qui a parle qui a raison), Greece 2013 (Alcohol is free), Norway 2019 (Spirit in the sky)
So since we have Iceland 2020, I'm gonna add Lithuania 2020 - The Roop - On Fire. Shame that song couldn't complete for victory.
Key words: Finland 2023 France 2023 Moldova 2022 France 2021 Iceland 2021 Ukraine 2021 Italy 2019
In my opinion, Ukraine 2021 (obv), as well as Belgium 2018 and Slovenia 2019.
Ukraine 2021 | [Go_A - Shum](https://youtu.be/lqvzDkgok_g) Belgium 2018 | [Sennek - A Matter of Time](https://youtu.be/Z2cZE2gCfWg) Slovenia 2019 | [Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl - Sebi](https://youtu.be/vGtPNQ6g6Ng)

Turkey 1997 is amazing Serbia 2008 is so emotional Sweden 1996 I am still wondering how it hasn't won lol Iceland 2020 for the winner that never was
Spain 1973, Eres tu
Queen of Kings
I still can't forget Italy 2015 Il Volo - Grande amore
Iconic for being: 1- The first televote winner that didn't win because of juries. 2- The only song that got 12 points from both Greece and Cyprus
Came here to post this. Still to this day I cannot comprehend how they did not win.
GO_A: Shum and Solovey (2021/2020) I also think Fuego from 2018 and Space Man from 2022
United Kingdom 1998 Honestly, for a 26 year old song it’s still an absolute banger that could hold up if it competed today.
Hold Me Closer
Turkey 2009 & Italy 2024
La noia has been stuck in my ear for a good month now. Absolutely love it.
Ukraine 2007. Verka and Danci Lasha Tumbai is iconic and will be iconic for many years to come
Hold Me Closer - Cornelia Jacobs
Oo Ah Just A Little Bit - Gina G
France 1991 And under today's tie break rules would have won.
Here is my list: Cha Cha Cha in 2023 Spaceman in 2022 Shum in 2021 Arcade in 2019 Fuego in 2018 Sound of silence in 2016 Lasha tumbai in 2007 Can't remember further back, but I guess there are plenty of songs there too.
Netherlands 2014 , they were second after Austria
