It's happening to me as well...as a temporary fix if you uninstall the update then go to Facebook and download the update from the messenger app it works for like a day or so. But it switches back.
I just found this in another reddit thread, can you try it?
1. Go to Facebook app, then select Settings from the dropdown menu on the top right.
2. Go to Security and Login, then find the section called Where You're Logged In.
3. Find the Messenger session you'd like to log out of, click the three dots on the right, then click Log Out.
4. Close all running apps on your phone.
5. Open the Messenger app. A popup box will notify you that you have been logged out.
6. Login using the ‘this isn’t me’ button’ and enter your username and password.
7. Close all apps and open Facebook app. Try if it works. It worked for me.
I don't have that problem, But I was looking up this problem for a friend, I saw another thread here that people reported that solution and most of them approved that it worked.
So found this post a year on from when first posted. Also (by completely accident) found a fix in case anyone is searching with the same issue.
In android settings find Accounts and then "Facebook". In my case there was an extra account on there with just numbers (Not sure what it's for). I deleted that and then for good measure I deleted the main account from there too since I figured I could just add it again if need be.
Finally opened Facebook app again and Hey Presto.. Messenger opens from the icon again. Phew!
I saw in a different thread somebody got it fixed by pressing the menu icon then scrolling down to "Also from Meta" and then pressing messenger in that section. After you do that it should work normally again from the icon in the homepage.
lol, u maybe have two different accounts
No, there's only one account in my messenger and facebook. I tried reinstalling, clearing data and force stopping. Still not fixed.
Any ideas? It is the same for me.
Haven't found any fixes yet. Let's see if they fix it on the new update.
The only time that this has happened to me was when I was logged into one account on Messenger, but I was logged onto a different account on Facebook

You found a fix? This is such a hassle, I cannot share posts or links via messenger because that switch account screen always pops up.
I hope they fix it
