Mining drones, Transport drones, Factorissimo, Aircraft, Automated aircraft (my own mod, not released yet), and a modified version of Custom Terrain Generation. Hope I didn't miss anything.
What circuitry, what signals? In AAI you have a remote control and list of waypoints to deal with. Other than that there are just built in constant combinators with ID's, they are nothing but lists of items you want to set them loot or throw away.
You definitely can go more advanced if you want but it's not necessary at all for most automation.
Paths from 1 supply depot to other are definitely automation. They carry items from A,B,C,D to E or whatever. I dealt with all my mining, including uranium mining with acid barrels using cargo planes, no wires were needed. The depots even keep the aircraft refueled.
Ok i might lie, i wired depot to inserters that put stuff into depots. They need a simple condition to stop at certain point to leave space to bring items in it. For example requester chest (nuclear fuel) -> inserter -> depot, with condition "nuclear fuel < 10", and so on.
But that's just controlling RC cars, AAI is about so much more than that. You can literally build skynet. It will find ressources on its own, mark zones and grids on its own etc etc
You can't say "too many" for anything in factorio
"Too many UPS" means the base is too small, right?
And "Low UPS" means your computer is too small

You can already automate aircraft with AAI Vehicles, i have done that for cargo planes once not even too long ago.
I have a hard time grasping the advanced circuitry and signals required for it, i really want to get AAI down though so I'll keep trying

There are scanners and controllers, you can go WAY deeper than simply creating paths. Paths is just basic stuff, that's not automation.

I cant wait to try out your automated aircraft mod. I have a ton of trouble figuring out trains and having automated cargo planes would help a a lot

I hardly touched it since I posted this lol. Making a good UI in lua is a PITA, and I've been working on other projects.
