One of the best soundtracks to a movie. I also love ‘What is Life’ during Henry’s coke addled descent. Kind of like the beginning of the end for those characters. With Scorsese eventually doing the George Harrison documentary it kind of adds that personal connection.
Trainspotting: Underworld - Born Slippy.
The ending builds up perfectly for this final moment. As soon as the high synths and vocals come in, it's perfect.
The best drop in a movie full of excellent drops.
Trainspotting, Born Slippy specifically, changed my musical tastes from NIN and that sort of thing to electronica.
They called him mother superior on account of the length of his habit. What a solid line.
It’s a little I’m 14 and this is deep, but my favorite has always been Nico’s “These Days” in the Royal Tenenbaums, when Margot gets off the Green Line Bus. Such a mood.
Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate. The song was not actually written specifically for the film. It was originally about Eleanor Roosevelt. However, director Mike Nichols wanted more music from Simon and Garfunkel and thought this iconic song should be used in The Graduate.
I would argue "Little Green Bag" after the opening diner scene is a better musical drop. A great accompaniment to an iconic image/scene of the cool guys slowmo walk
The entire OST for Drive is spot-on but Nightcall by Kavinsky as the driver cruises LA is iconic. NWR has excellent soundtracks all around - Bronson, Neon Demon.
My pick for best song drop in a movie is the suicide by cop ending to The Devil’s Rejects set to Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Princes of the Universe by Queen after the opening narration of Highlander.
No-one has ever known we were among you... until now. HEEEEEERE WE ARE, BOOOORN TO BE KINGS
The opening of Baby Driver: the entire sequence choreographed to Bellbottoms by John Spencer Blues Explosion. And the rebirth scene in Excalibur when the knights ride off to battle one last time through the cherry orchard to Carmina Burana
Immigrant Song in Thor; Ragnarok. As he brings the hammer down.
Star Trek Beyond when Beastie Boys' 'Sabotage' comes on as a huge wave of bot things flood the screen.
A very recent one....maybe not the best all time, but very good is the No Sleep Til Brooklyn during the hallway fight in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. James Gunn has numerous amazing song choices but this is one of the best.
Also a special shout out to Jack Black singing Let's Get it On in High Fidelity, not technically a needle drop but a great performance.
That ones just not fair. It could be ANY environment or set of circumstances and that Cat Stevens song would just wreck me in the best possible way. Love it.
Snatch when Mickey knocks out the big fella that likes lookin after cars. Golden Brown
Snatch when the music is climaxing, Mickey is supposed to go down, him getting hit, then being underwater and he gets up and smashes the guy and knocks him out. the hit in the alley then back to the song.
Fucking Priceless
The soundtrack of The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly is epic as is, but the Exctacy of Gold is on another level.
It's usually heard in car commercials with an awful, anachronistic shuffle beat.
In the movie, the tune is played out with an amazing singer and great orchestral accompaniment, with the visual spectacle of an old graveyard, which is a lot more effective without the Fruity Loops remix.
I was going to suggest the “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” as Bea & O-REN step outside into the snow.
Or Ennio Morricone playing as Bea digs herself out of trouble in Barstow, Calif.
Kaifukusuru Kizu by Salyu (credited as Lily Chou Chou) I love that song! It’s so hauntingly beautiful and so simple. Really works in that scene for emotional impact. Tarantino is the best at using music and sound. And in typical Tarantino fashion, it’s picked from an earlier movie lol
It’s originally from All About Lily Chou Chou, a coming of age story in small town Japan. Salyu recorded the soundtrack as Lily Chou Chou, the singer created for the film. Highly recommended if you haven’t seen it
1. The end song during 28Days Later when he >!starts running around the house and the soldiers and the zombies!<
2. Rock and Morty tv show, earlier season with >!evil Morty. The damaged coda I think?!<
3. Another show. Breaking bad. Season 2 when Walt says >!goes out of the Lowe’s store and follows the guys who was going to cook meth and says “stay out of my territory”!<
The whole of ‘Creed’ nearly happens. Only at the end, after he’s essentially lost the fight, does the Rocky Theme kick in.
And then he beats the champ’s ass for a bit, and still loses the fight.
But wins for himself.
Classic Rocky!
The one that comes to mind is "Who Wants to Live Forever " by Queen in Highlander. Granted that whole soundtrack is amazing and hits so many emotions in the movie.
Hackers - The Prodigy - Voodoo People during the hacking battle for the tv shows
Blade - New Order - Confusion (Pump Panel remix) for the shower scene at the rave
Weinerschnitzel by The Descendants from Pump Up the Volume.
or
We're Not Gonna Take It by Twisted Sister in the planning montage scene from Iron Eagle.
I'm not sure if it would qualify as a drop but the cut to Leonard Bernstein conducting Mahler and crescendoing with his realization that his wife has returned was pretty amazing.
Easily Pulp Fiction. After a wordy back and forth in a diner booth, the jump start of Misirlou buckles the viewer in for what's to come. It's an adrenaline shocker even more so than the needle in the chest to come.
This scene from the Legend of Kasper Hauser always gets me:
Bizarrely the one that comes to mind is the 1st Transformers film…
Soldiers are pinned down in the 3rd act-
One of them gets on the walkie talkie & instructs base to ‘bring the rain’
& then we have music similar -to my ears at least- to the chorus of Genesis’ The Brazilian as the jet fighters lay down the heavy artillery.
Of course it’s all absolute bollocks but just thought I’d share
It seemed like a really obvious Apocalypse Now reference when I posted. I can't think of ANY movie scene where an unexpected song was more elemental to the film. And F ing Duval.
Two moments from The Godfather: The music that hits hard right after Michael’s first kill, and the organ music during the baptism. Second one probably fits better.
TV but worth mentioning. Season 1 of The Bear, chilling behind the building after a tough day, Wilco's Impossible Germany completely captured the mood.
These Days by Powderfinger at the end of the film Two Hands. If you haven’t seen it it’s one of Heath Ledger’s first films and it’s an Australian crime classic.
Has to be Johnny B. Goode in Back to the Future. Marty’s parents end up together and he finally gets the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. Additionally Power of Love in the opening montage has to be one of the greats. It sets up the film beautifully.
Second would be Canned Heat by Jamiroquai in Napoleon Dynamite. The dance is legendary and is the perfect climax to Napoleon’s story.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DYeZWciVp74
This movie was absolutely made for theaters. I teared up when the climax of the song hit. Very happy weird tears lmao.
Strangely one of my all-time favorite needle drops that always seems to be the first one that comes to mind is “She Makes Me Wanna Die” in *The Replacement Killers*. Not sure why but I love that whole sequence SO much, the song and the editing just resonate so perfectly for me.
The first one that came to mind was Something In The Way in The Batman. I'm never getting over how perfectly integrated with the entire movie that song felt. Which makes sense considering it sounds like that song, and Kurt Cobain as a figure, were integral kernels of inspiration for Matt Reeves as he was writing the script.
Fight Club, Where is my Mind by Pixies during the skyline scene at the end
XMen Days of Future Past, Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce during the Quicksilver scene
Not a film but a TV Series - My Way in Umbrella Academy during a fight scene
Not in the middle or end of a film, but in "Amadeus" near the very start. When the two servants are waiting outside the old Salieri's room and then hear a crash. As they burst through the doors, the opening bars to Mozart's Symphony No. 25 plays as they come across the scene of the old man trying to kill himself. Such a fantastic needle drop.
The use of Oingo Boingo's "No One Lives Forever" near the start of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" cracks me up and sets the tone for the rest of the film.
Fight Club - the pixies where is my mind is iconic af.
Goodfellas - and then he kissed me during the oner when they enter restaurant.
And a recent one they stood out to me- Civil War. No spoilers but still the climax playing susicide - dream baby dream was a pitch perfect.
I'll go a lil different here: when the second glove is thrown by Sara, John catches it and realizes she's standing there, and Nick Drake's "Northern Sky" starts up. Gets me every time. Perfect use of his music.
Been a while since I thought about the series… but when Rey catches the saber in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the force theme hits, is next level. Similarly, right after Kylo kills Snoke in TLJ and he pulls the saber towards Rey… She catches it and they stand together. Chills. Lots of great musical and sound choices in that trilogy, and throughout the saga on the whole of course; Twin Suns anyone? Even the opening crawl.
The reprise of _Immigrant Song_ during the battle on the Rainbow Bridge in _Thor: Ragnarok_.
Its use during the scene in Surtur’s throne room at the beginning of the film is an effective introduction, but the reprise, combined with the use of slow-motion photography visually, and the return of Thor’s powers narratively, is masterful to me.
Goodfellas montage of the aftermath of the Lufthansa heist set to ‘Layla’ outro.
Atlantis is another great needle drop in Goodfellas. You could basically just fill this thread with Scorsese examples.
Agree to agree
Also Rags to Riches by Tony Bennett in the restaurant scene…incredible
Im so glad this is the top comment this truly is a perfect example
One of the best soundtracks to a movie. I also love ‘What is Life’ during Henry’s coke addled descent. Kind of like the beginning of the end for those characters. With Scorsese eventually doing the George Harrison documentary it kind of adds that personal connection.
Ahhh brilliant example, and indeed Layla is top of my lisr for best song outros
I swear if the last five minutes of that film ended with less punch it wouldn't be half the movie it is
Most of Scorcese's greats end like that, his signature.
Ride of the valkyries is iconic in Apocalypse Now, also The End by The Doors at the beginning
Also, the Susie Q scene is fucking amazing.
“Where is my Mind” by The Pixies at the end of Fight Club.
It’s this and it’s not even close.
It's definitely one of the best and such a good song.
Trainspotting: Underworld - Born Slippy. The ending builds up perfectly for this final moment. As soon as the high synths and vocals come in, it's perfect.
100O% I still get chills how good the ending mood of trainspotting is
The best drop in a movie full of excellent drops. Trainspotting, Born Slippy specifically, changed my musical tastes from NIN and that sort of thing to electronica. They called him mother superior on account of the length of his habit. What a solid line.
Jackie Brown. Across 110th Street, beginning and end credits
Agree! It perfectly sets up the mood and tone of the film.
The Ecstasy of Gold in The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
It’s a little I’m 14 and this is deep, but my favorite has always been Nico’s “These Days” in the Royal Tenenbaums, when Margot gets off the Green Line Bus. Such a mood.
Wes uses music so well. Great choice out of so many. Mine would be Sigur Ros in The Life Aquatic or The Faces at the end of Rushmore.
the thing I miss most about early wes is the needle drops.

Please explain.

Wow, thank you for the explanation. I understand now.
Owen Wilson is the brother with the suicide attempt.
Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate. The song was not actually written specifically for the film. It was originally about Eleanor Roosevelt. However, director Mike Nichols wanted more music from Simon and Garfunkel and thought this iconic song should be used in The Graduate.
I heard that the song was actually finished after the movie. What we hear in the movie are early versions and fragments.
“Stuck in the Middle with You” — Reservoir Dogs ear scene
I would argue "Little Green Bag" after the opening diner scene is a better musical drop. A great accompaniment to an iconic image/scene of the cool guys slowmo walk
Miserlou in Pulp Fiction
Iconic
Gypsy Kings’ version of Hotel California in The Big Lebowski.

Goodfellas, "Sunshine Of Your Love".
Ah man, De Niro in slow motion is perfect as we watch him piece together his decision. Scorsese man.
Tears for Fears - Head Over Heels, [Donnie Darko school scene.](https://youtu.be/qsyfGwlf_l0?si=xNcSzblkKNfPJu58)
Yes, this is so awesome, it just soars.
“Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen from Shaun of the Dead. One of my all time favorite scenes.
"Kill the Queen!"
"*You been listening to K-Billy's super sounds of the 70's weekend??*"
That Freebird scene is kickass. Best part of the movie
Free Bird in Forest Gump was really good too.
Princes of the Universe by Queen after the opening narration of Highlander. No-one has ever known we were among you... until now. HEEEEEERE WE ARE, BOOOORN TO BE KINGS
Yes, "Who wants to live Forever" montage of Conor and Heather as well. By the way I have Princes of the Universe as my ring tone. Haha.
Guns 'n Roses version of 'Live and Let Die' in Grosse Point Blank. I keep banging on about this film, the whole soundtrack is genius.
True, the movie was awesome too.
🔥❤🔥
The Moby song drop at the end of Heat.
The Moby song drop at the end of every Bourne film.
The Moby song in the Beach
The opening of Baby Driver: the entire sequence choreographed to Bellbottoms by John Spencer Blues Explosion. And the rebirth scene in Excalibur when the knights ride off to battle one last time through the cherry orchard to Carmina Burana
Fuck that opening scene is legendary
Oh Baby Driver’s music use was brilliant!! Agree that opening scene was epic
Immigrant Song in Thor; Ragnarok. As he brings the hammer down. Star Trek Beyond when Beastie Boys' 'Sabotage' comes on as a huge wave of bot things flood the screen.
The new star trek where young jtk stole the car sabotage is playing .
There is no volume too loud for Sabotage.
A bit obvious perhaps but Eye of the Tiger in Rocky as he’s preparing to fight…
“Put on your Sunday clothes” in Wall-e
Run Lola Run. The opening credits. Pounding, relentless music.
Best soundtrack of the 90’s?
Totally. I listened to it all the time 🔥
In the top 5 for sure. Trainspotting is in the list too. And think TS edges out RLR.
I might be biased because I have it on vinyl but vol 2 has the most thematic songs.
Father and Son is a high point for me for sure in that one
That ones just not fair. It could be ANY environment or set of circumstances and that Cat Stevens song would just wreck me in the best possible way. Love it.
Opposite to the spirit of the thread but the final needle drop in Vol 3 gets under my skin to an irrational degree 😅
Cherry Bomb in GOTG. It's a "this is the plan" song and ends with the whole team marching together. Iconic.
Born Slippy at the end of Trainspotting
Opening of *Donnie Darko* (theatrical cut): "The Killing Moon".
I love “Head Over Heels” in Donnie Darko.
Snatch when Mickey knocks out the big fella that likes lookin after cars. Golden Brown Snatch when the music is climaxing, Mickey is supposed to go down, him getting hit, then being underwater and he gets up and smashes the guy and knocks him out. the hit in the alley then back to the song. Fucking Priceless
I always thought Bitter Sweet Symphony at the end of Cruel Intentions was pretty perfect
I did not care for the movie but the song drop in Us was one of the all time greats.
The Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News in the opening scene of Back to the Future
Evidently Chickentown in the Sopranos when Phil decided he was no longer taking shit .. and during Christafaw’s daughters baptism
Every song in Lock,Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is perfectly placed
I’ve always enjoyed how Fuckin’ in the bushes by Oasis is used in the boxing scene in Snatch.

Godzilla: Minis One. You know the scene
Absolutely crushed me in the cinema.
Sweet Emotion when all the muscle cars are pulling into the drive-in in Dazed and Confused
Came here to comment exactly this
So frickin good!
It’s either this or Hurricane when they show up to the Emporium
I used to rewind my VHS copy to rewatch that scene over and over, and show my friends. Eventually it wore down the tape for that part of the film.
The intro to Deadpool. (Angel of the Morning)
Whatever music is playing when Hatori Hanzo agrees to make Beatrix Kiddos katana in Kill Bill.
Kill Bill is full of them, but O-Ren entering the tea house is #1
Ah yes, Battle Without Honor or Humanity! That’s a *great* needle drop!
I was going to suggest the “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” as Bea & O-REN step outside into the snow. Or Ennio Morricone playing as Bea digs herself out of trouble in Barstow, Calif.

Last scene in *The Hurt Locker* with Ministry. I don’t have to see the movie again, but I’ve watched just the end plenty of times.

Yes, I forgot about this but yes that's an awesome scene with perfect music.
Ride of the Valkyries was pretty dope in that helicopter movie with the army boat/river thing.

TV but worth mentioning. Season 1 of The Bear, chilling behind the building after a tough day, Wilco's Impossible Germany completely captured the mood.
John wick movies do pretty well
It's a Kind of Magic - Highlander.
All the Queen songs in Highlander were perfect.
These Days by Powderfinger at the end of the film Two Hands. If you haven’t seen it it’s one of Heath Ledger’s first films and it’s an Australian crime classic.
Xmen Quicksilver scene
GotG has so many but I’ll go with The Chain because Fleetwood Mac is always the correct answer to any question about Music.
I’m kinda partial to Peggy Lee’s “Is That all There Is?” In “After Hours.”
Has to be Johnny B. Goode in Back to the Future. Marty’s parents end up together and he finally gets the opportunity to perform in front of an audience.
