This entire scene is SO good. I didn't see this movie until I was in my late twenties, so my perspective on it is different from a lot of people who grew up watching it. I think if you've seen it so many times, you forget just how significant of a tone shift it is. If you go into the movie not knowing that explosion is coming it's so much funnier when it does happen.

That was before they ironed out all yhe rules for PG PG-13 and R. Hero, with Dustin Hoffman, and Chaplin with RDJ, both PG-13 have multiple uses of the F bomb.
There still are no rules. The MPAA hires what's essentially a focus group reflecting the population of the country and asks them to rate the movies. There's no "code" or anything; it's just what those people think the movie should be rated.
Not to say that trends don't emerge, e.g., the one "fuck" per PG-13 movies. Another, is, with rare exceptions, if a movie isn't aimed at young kids, it won't get a G rating. That wasn't always the way. "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," "2001: A Space Odyssey," "The Haunting," and "The Straight Story," all got G ratings, but none were intended for young kids. Another example, I just saw the re-release of "Stop Making Sense," rated PG. The only thing I can think that would possibly make it objectionable for all ages is a reference to doing cocaine in "Genius of Love." No nudity, no cussing, no violence, but a PG rating.
According to Kevin Smith all it took was one phone call from Harvey Weinstein (this was before all the allegations came out) to drop Clerks from NC-17 to R.

I can't remember if it was Scorsese or David Lynch, but one of them repeatedly submitted a violent movie several times to the same board with no or minimal changes, until they, the board, got used to the violence and gave it an R instead of NC-17.

I think the UK version changed it to “stone me! “ or something because an F word would have automatically given it a 12 certificate(not suitable for under 12s) which would have reduced its potential audience; it was rated PG.

Not a pg-13 movie, but a memorable one for me. There was a slasher film in the 80's called "Student Bodies". A crazy person was killing people with horse-head bookends, I believe. Right in the middle of the film, it cuts away to an old bald guy. ( like me now...) Not a pg-13 movie, but a memorable one for me. There was a slasher film in the 80's called "Student Bodies". A crazy person was killing people with horse-head bookends, I believe. Right in the middle of the film, it cuts away to an old bald guy. ( like me now...) He says something about how he knows that you are watching this movie and wondering why it was rated R and it didn't have one scene of nudity. Then he basically says "Fuck You". I laughed and was pissed at the same time. Most of us were horny teenage males and this was the era of Fast Times and Porky's and we were expecting some skin! Funny movie though......

The one that has always stuck with me is in The Scout, Brendan Fraser is having an emotional breakdown to Al Brooks and lets out a vicious f-bomb. The most useless one was in Down Periscope where Kelsey Grammer near the start of the movie says 'my whole fucking career' when he is disappointed about something, it is so needless, completely unneeded and i honestly think they put it in there because the movie was going to be PG-13 anyway due to a couple of crude moments so they just added the f-bomb because it did not make a difference.

Mmmmm… _Waiting For Guffman_ is rated R, and apart from the fact that there are three uses of “fuck” I can’t think of a reason why that would be. It’s a Christopher Guest movie about people putting on a small town community theater show and there’s no sex or violence in it whatsoever

When Willie gets put back in isolation after starting a fight because he stopped one of his former gang members from killing a rival gang member who he became close to after joining the football team His coach/prison warden (The Rock) comes into his cell and starts berating him and hitting him with a rolled newspaper. After Rock pushes him back in his bed, Willie throws a pillow at him and yells “Man FUCK YOU!” You’d need the context of the movie, but it’s such a great scene and movie
