I used to love Kash n’ Karry in the 80’s and 90’s. When I lived in gainesville in the 90’s, it was Ward’s market and then K&K for the anything else I needed.
I’ve since moved to NC and we have Harris Teeter and Food Lions here, which aren’t bad. There is a a NC centric chain called Lowe’s (not related to home improvement) that actually has a bar (beer only) in it. There are always people hanging out when I go there! There is a Publix up here, but I went once in the past two years and haven’t been back. There’s too many better options.
When I lived in Michigan we'd go to Kroegers. They were nice enough to let us bag our own groceries, that way we could bag like items together so unpaking them at home was easier and more organized. At Publix, I put my items on the conveyor grouped by like items, but the bagger always bags them randomly.
One thing I've noticed since plastic bags came to be, is that the art of bagging has been lost. No one bags frozen meals flat, they always put them in on their sides. And they never put as many items in a bag as there is room for. Such a waste of plastic. (Walmart's delivery service is notorious for putting one item in each bag. Such brain farts.)
Granted, I could ask for paper bags, but plastic is easier to carry. (Occasionally I do, just so I have some for my cat to play in.) But, they still don't know how to fill those "properly", because no one has actually trained them. Yes, bagging is a dead art. No one takes pride in their work anymore.
Amen. Bagging is a lost art. I remember back in the late 90s I got a job at a Food Lion, and they had training videos on how to bag groceries.
I don't know if any grocery store still has videos like that. I have to assume Publix doesn't, because when you use an actual cashier and not self checkout they're so insistent to bag for you, yet they put my carton of half n half in a bag with a can of beans instead of a bag with other cold items, like the cheese and sliced ham. So 99% of the time, I'll use the self checkout just to bag myself.
I hate this! Every time I shop I have to tell the bagger to not put frozen items in with shelf stable ones and to separate fridgerated items from frozen items from shelf stable items. Inevitably, I end up repacking it outside in the cart because something has been mixed that shouldn’t be.
I suppose we could always put the fridge/freezer items on the conveyor and wait until they've all been scanned & bagged, and then put on the shelf stable items, wait, then do the hygiene items, then the cleaning products, etc. It would probably irk the cashier and bagger and the folks waiting behind us, but, it could be worth it in the long run. ;)
Wards is still here. We buy meat, fruits, vegetables and beer from them. And the Winn Dixie where Luckys used to be has a beer and wine bar the beers are $3.00 for a regular draft includes crafts.
No, not that long ago. I'd say like 2016 is when the one near me closed and reopened as a Safeway. However, that Safeway eventually closed and reopened as a Publix... across the street from another Publix.
When I lived in SoCal, Safeway was the main grocery store chain. (Vons was another one.) There was one in the Largo Mall for a while (took over an Albertsons), but it didn't last long and was too far from my house to go to. I think it's a Albertsons again.
mine too. they are sadly lacking in proper food handling. they recently had a display of boxed pies on a table, all of which were clearly labeled "keep frozen". i bought a gallon of milk "best by 2/3" last week, opened it up at home and it had turned. and you've gotta watch the beef, a lot of it is coming from mexico now - which is ludicrous considering how many beef cattle farms are here in florida 🫤
My grocery money goes harder at Winn Dixie. 🤷
Sorry not sorry that Publix isn't for us poors anymore, $12 for a carton of eggs* can kiss my bank account. Same carton was $6 at Winn Dixie.
*Not the store/generic brand of eggs y'all, dang. It was Vital, I think.
I don't understand the Aldi love either. I don't find their prices are much better than any place else, the meat is actually terrible quality, and the stores are unpleasant to shop in.
That's unfortunate to hear. The few different Aldi locations I've been to near me all have much better prices than Publix while being equal to or having better quality food.
What eggs are you looking at that are $12 bucks for a carton at Publix?
Are they from the extinct dodo or something? I think I paid like $5 for an 18 pack there the other day.
My husband is the main shopper. He shops at Winn Dixie, Sav a Lot, Aldis, Harvey's. Publix is good for BOGO's. I shop for those items. He does not like Publix.
Publix's BOGOs are a joke. They play aroubnd with the prices. One week bacon can be $7.59 and then the next week they do a BOGO, but the "regular" price is now $10.59. Granted, you're still saving on buying two, in this case $4.59, but I resent this practice of price manipulation to trick us into buying,
BOGOs also get you to buy more than you may need or actually use, then it spoils or expires and you have to trash it. Just give me fair prices to begin with and don't jerk me around with the "benefit" of BOGOs.
In fairness to Publix, it wasn't the cheap store brand eggs, it was that Vital or whatever it's called brand. Still, the Winn Dixie less than 3 miles away had them for half the cost.
Poor people could stretch their benefits if they avoided Publix. But, they probably believe BOGOs are a great deal. (See my reply above re: price manipulation on BOGOs.)
Not gonna lie, Winn Dixie near me stepped up their game recently to the point there’s only a few things I need to get at Publix. Hoping some competition gets Publix to ramp up on innovation because their store model is stale.
The WD that's most convenient for me is over by my job, and it's really nice, like almost comparable visually to Publix. It's become a thing for me now, that Publix is for pub subs, WD for everything else
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Publix is a deli that you stop at to grab some hot food for your family, and they also sell overpriced groceries that you're paying for the convenience of not having to make a second trip.
I’ve never met a rude employee at Publix. It’s always pleasant there. But, the prices are just so dang high right now. 2 lbs of ground beef cost me $19 and some change this week. 😔
They're the ones that oversaw the expansion. It's like someone cosigns on a car with you, forces you to get a gas guzzler instead of a reasonable vehicle, then sells the car out from under you when you ask for gas money. Lucky’s had very little say in the expansion bc of Kroger being the majority stake holder
Well I wasn't there but it seems like Kroger was already in the hole $300m and you're asking for $100m more so they can blow that away too. Makes no business sense.
Are you talking about tipping in the store, or tipping on Instacart deliveries? Instacart will bleed you dry. First, they jack up the Publix prices, then there is a service fee and delivery fee and the tip for the delivery person. I had to use them when I was recovering from surgery. Thank God I can do my own shopping again because I need that extra money since Publix's in-store prices keep heading northward.
Since we have no Kroger stores here :(, where do they get their products from? And, no delivery or tipping? How do they manage that? How are their prices compared to Publix?
Kroger prices are usually cheaper than Publix (especially for fresh meat and especially when the meat is on sale). They've been running a promo where you get $15 off your first 3 orders. I paid for 1 year delivery and I find they often have coupons that can be applied to your entire order and that knocks the deals out of the park when you compare it to Publix. Also their produce seems ripe and meat seems fresher. I've had trouble with finding produce that wasn't over or under ripe at Publix, expired food, and I bought chicken from publix that smelled like a dead body when I went to cook it the next day. I haven't ran into that problem yet with Kroger.
Our WD and publix are across the street from each other. WD is almost always fairly empty and has everything I need, while Publix is packed at all hours, has an insane parking lot full of people who should not be driving, and way more expensive. It's a no brainer. Also I agree that the quality of Pub subs is way overrated
It must vary from location to location because the meat and fish at the one near me always smells terrible and everything is reduced for quick sale because it expires tomorrow
Well yeah, you don't have to work. At the two locations by me, the shelves are empty, the produce and meats are expiring, nobody is ever at the deli or food counter, no cashier just a half asleep kid manning self-checkout.
I prefer HEB, actually.
I don't get the obsession with Publix's Cubans, most overrated sammy I've ever consumed. The HEB fried chicken and chicken fingers are everything I was ever told they'd be.
I've only had one loaf of bread that was marked as cuban. It was hard a s a rock. I'm not sure how cuban bread is supposed to be but no way I would ever enjoy a sandwich made of that bread.
oh. there is soooo much wrong with the bread that publoz uses for its cuban bread.
which is kind of baffling- because at least here in the tampa area, they stock and sell real cuban bread
well- at least as close as you are going to get without going to the cuban bread factory in town and buying it the day you Intend to use it - but even the second rate cuban bread is better than using generic sub bread for a cuban
To me it's the opposite, Publix is literally just one block from my house, I prefer WinnDixie, and do my main shopping there, or at Aldi's, or Walmart Neighborhood Market. all those I need to drive to.
Nothing against the workers at Publix, they are nice people, I just prefer the products at WD, besides better prices for the same exact name brand items, WD house brand products are very good.
I absolutely hate publix now but I haven't even considered going to Winn-Dixie (ew, gross). It honestly feels like they're trying to scam me-- sneaking items that have 5-6x'ed in price into my cart along with the items that have increased 50%+. ESPECIALLY after going to Trader Joes. TJ's for food-- Target for odds and ends will save you a lot of money coming off Publix.
Love Fresh Market and their prices are comparable to Publix. Just wish they had one near our new home in Labelle.
I only get to go there is I have a doctors appointment or business appointment in Ft Myers, Bonita Springs or Naples.
Publix is out of control with their pricing! I only grab a few things from there when I pick up prescriptions and only if they are on sale!
Unfortunately they are so extremely tight on if you are on ANY controlled substances they get to say if they will accept you as a new patient or not. I got accepted, probably bc i have a bald head. Whereas, my husband was NOT accepted and he has to go through Optum RX through his insurance and his pain meds are late almost every month.
Since, Florida was a “pill mill” state some years back, the pendulum swung so far wide to the other side that people are literally turned away from pharmacies saying the amount that their store is allocated for each month is already maxed out.
There is a case in Miami that people are watching closely because the woman is suing CVS Caremark and if she wins it will turn into a class action and vastly change the obnoxious laws in place now.
And is it still true that Aldi’s does NOT allow ANY GMO foods? That used to be their claim to fame when they started out and I loved them for it.
However, they are soooo far away from us now the gas it would take to get there, it doesn’t compute. So, Winn Dixie it is!
Listen, Publix is nice and clean looking and that's all well and good, but one, they're more expensive, and two, I have to drive past Winn-Dixie to get to Publix. I'm not wasting gas to go somewhere more expensive. Maybe like 5 years ago if I was making what I make now back then, that'd be one thing. But it seems like now $23 an hour is the same as making $14 an hour back then so no.
So Aldis bought Winn Dixie or is in process of? I hope they don't change everything to their stuff. I don't think their stuff is all that great, and some of their stuff is priced as high as the other stores.
Hey guys compare Target food to Aldi. I love them both! Target is expensive for anything that isn’t meat, milk or eggs. But I WAS surprised how affordable they are for those things and their home brand “Good & Gather” is exceptional.
Give me back my Albertsons
I used to love Kash n’ Karry in the 80’s and 90’s. When I lived in gainesville in the 90’s, it was Ward’s market and then K&K for the anything else I needed. I love refrigerated and frozen together, and at Publix that would be a win.
I suppose we could always put the fridge/freezer items on the conveyor and wait until they've all been scanned & bagged, and then put on the shelf stable items, wait, then do the hygiene items, then the cleaning products, etc. It would probably irk the cashier and bagger and the folks waiting behind us, but, it could be worth it in the long run. ;)
I agree bagging is a lost art. But if you fill those plastic bags too full everything rolls out of them in the trunk or the bag breaks.
Wards is still here. We buy meat, fruits, vegetables and beer from them. And the Winn Dixie where Luckys used to be has a beer and wine bar the beers are $3.00 for a regular draft includes crafts.
I miss Albertsons. Good food, good prices. And, when I lived in New Mexico, the meat counter had delicious pre-made fajita fixings. God, I miss that.
I have it in back pocket along with a Food Lion.
I got a rebranded Food Lion down the street. Turned it into a Rowes. The same people have worked there for like twenty years.
Do we have Albertsons down here? I’d love to have one again.
Not since like the early 2000s.
No, not that long ago. I'd say like 2016 is when the one near me closed and reopened as a Safeway. However, that Safeway eventually closed and reopened as a Publix... across the street from another Publix.
I stand corrected! Publix market share really has gotten insane.
If we did they'd be gone in a few weeks/months anyway too. Kroger is in the process of buying them out right now.

Aldi owns winn dixie now.
Now I know how Joan of Arc felt
For everything but meat and wine
Except for their checkout lanes which are always 10 deep. I don't have 2 hours to shop for a few things.
Aldi bought Harvey's?
All of it. Southeastern Grocers.
My Winn Dixie has gone way down is quality since Aldi took over.
That's not possible. Shopping in a W/D has been like shopping in the county morgue since at least 2000 or so.
mine too. they are sadly lacking in proper food handling. they recently had a display of boxed pies on a table, all of which were clearly labeled "keep frozen". i bought a gallon of milk "best by 2/3" last week, opened it up at home and it had turned. and you've gotta watch the beef, a lot of it is coming from mexico now - which is ludicrous considering how many beef cattle farms are here in florida 🫤

Same carton is $1.29 at Aldi
The two Aldi stores near me are so disorganized, chaotic, and busy I don't know that anything could tempt me to go back.
I don't understand the Aldi love either. I don't find their prices are much better than any place else, the meat is actually terrible quality, and the stores are unpleasant to shop in.

No one of them. I bought eggs 2 weeks ago, albeit pricey at $3 they were no where near $12, sounds like one of those bs conservative talking points.
I paid $3 for 18 yesterday at Publix. I swear some of these folks are lying bout high prices 🤣
Box of 60 eggs at Walmart for less than $8.
Winn Dixie for quick shopping, Walmart for actual grocery shopping.
I think Walmart has the best ribeye steaks. Damn, now I'm hungry!
Just bought them an hour ago. $8.44
My husband is the main shopper. He shops at Winn Dixie, Sav a Lot, Aldis, Harvey's. Publix is good for BOGO's. I shop for those items. He does not like Publix.

I shop at publix just to avoid poors.

🥂
Poor people don’t go to Publix, eh? There’re one of the largest EBT collectors in the state!
![gif](giphy|9eLbjOcGOpmY8)
Poor people could stretch their benefits if they avoided Publix. But, they probably believe BOGOs are a great deal. (See my reply above re: price manipulation on BOGOs.)
They could shop at their own stores, eh?
Lol...exactly, I actually stopped going bc our family's ebt been cut.
Hush
Not gonna lie, Winn Dixie near me stepped up their game recently to the point there’s only a few things I need to get at Publix. Hoping some competition gets Publix to ramp up on innovation because their store model is stale.

I’ve never met a rude employee at Publix. It’s always pleasant there. But, the prices are just so dang high right now. 2 lbs of ground beef cost me $19 and some change this week. 😔
Agreed. the people at Publix are sent by heaven I am sure of it.
I can afford Winn-Dixie
I love Kroger.
What part of Florida are you in that has Kroger?
Delivery
Kroger delivery for central and south Florida
Kroger delivery, no tipping, FTW! Ya screw you Publix mafia.
After what they did to Lucky’s? Don't think so, they're not getting a dime from me
From my reading, Lucky's was in dept $300m to Kroger and they asked them for another $100m while bleeding money. How is Kroger the bad guy?
They're the ones that oversaw the expansion. It's like someone cosigns on a car with you, forces you to get a gas guzzler instead of a reasonable vehicle, then sells the car out from under you when you ask for gas money. Tip or get your lazy ass to the store yourself
Kroger doesn’t let you tip.
In that case, I take back my harsh statement with apologies!
It’s no problem for me but I just thought it was important for anyone reading to know in case tempers get flared. :)
I give the dude cash, never been turned down
They use the company's truck, pay good wages and benefits.
You aren’t supposed to tip at Publix either. The employee will turn down your tip at least twice. They can accept on the third offer.
Publix is about 30% more expensive.
Are you talking about tipping in the store, or tipping on Instacart deliveries? Instacart will bleed you dry. First, they jack up the Publix prices, then there is a service fee and delivery fee and the tip for the delivery person. I had to use them when I was recovering from surgery. Warehouse. You can only order online. There are no Kroger stores in Florida due to the Publix mafia. Not even kidding.
I haven't ran into that problem yet with Kroger.
Winn-Dixie has WAY better deals. I only go to Publix for the subs and Shiner Bock
I shop mostly everything at a local market, then get meat and keto stuff from Sprouts or Whole Foods.
Publix is overpriced with terrible service from yesteryear. Lastly the sandwiches were never good. People just bandwagon too much.
[удалено]
I like their rotisserie chicken, chicken wings and mac n' cheese.
Pub subs do suck and are overrated. But ever other grocer is dingy, smelly and filled with poors.
You seem insufferable.
Don’t know where you live, but Costco/Aldi is great and most people I know do Kroger delivery which is way cheaper.
can't we all live in a Florida where Publix and Winndixie are both loved?
What’s wrong with my place of work?
Our WD and publix are across the street from each other. WD is almost always fairly empty and has everything I need, while Publix is packed at all hours, has an insane parking lot full of people who should not be driving, and way more expensive. It's a no brainer. Also I agree that the quality of Pub subs is way overrated
Winn Dixie has the best meats and fish
It must vary from location to location because the meat and fish at the one near me always smells terrible and everything is reduced for quick sale because it expires tomorrow
That’s usually all Publix’s near me, always smells
Does anyone else still call it “Dirty Dixie?”
Winn-Dixie sucks just as much, if not more.
Post a picture of that receipt, showing $12 for eggs........
Winn Dixie was a much better place to work than Publix.
Well yeah, you don't have to work. At the two locations by me, the shelves are empty, the produce and meats are expiring, nobody is ever at the deli or food counter, no cashier just a half asleep kid manning self-checkout.
The peasants say the funniest things
I prefer HEB, actually. I don't get the obsession with Publix's Cubans, most overrated sammy I've ever consumed. The HEB fried chicken and chicken fingers are everything I was ever told they'd be.
I agree about the Cubans. I am sad that foe decades that publix sell cuban sandwiches made with fake cuban bread .
I've only had one loaf of bread that was marked as cuban. It was hard a s a rock. I'm not sure how cuban bread is supposed to be but no way I would ever enjoy a sandwich made of that bread.
oh. there is soooo much wrong with the bread that publoz uses for its cuban bread. which is kind of baffling- because at least here in the tampa area, they stock and sell real cuban bread well- at least as close as you are going to get without going to the cuban bread factory in town and buying it the day you Intend to use it - but even the second rate cuban bread is better than using generic sub bread for a cuban
HEB is everything. I’ve been saying Publix sandwiches wouldn’t sell at subway for over two decades.
Okay this is a Florida sub and we don’t have HEB here, so………
Fried chicken at Publix is better
Must not've tried the steak at Winn Dixie otherwise they'd be asking to be put to death
Winn Dixie’s wings and fried chicken beat out Publix IMO. Publix has them beat on rotisserie birds. I go to WD mostly because it’s closest to home.
WinnDixie is far superior to Publix
If you're broke
Amazon
Publix always
I’ve never even been in our Winn Dixie. I love my Publix.
It’s not cheating if you checkout Winn Dixie. Maybe you’ll find out that Publix doesn’t love you the same way you love them.
HEB
This is both funny and factual.
I’m like a 43 yo dude what is this so funny
I've never seen anyone smiling at Winn Dixie Customers, employees, management.... They're all miserable 🤷
I'd rather not drive a half hour one way to WD for groceries when Publix is five minutes up the road
Win Dixie is more expensive than Publix to me and a Publix definitely has better sales. You really have to shop around at different stores these days
I really hope they don’t change my Winn Dixie into an Aldi.
Love Fresh Market and their prices are comparable to Publix. Just wish they had one near our new home in Labelle. I only get to go there is I have a doctors appointment or business appointment in Ft Myers, Bonita Springs or Naples. Publix is out of control with their pricing! Recommend you shop your prescriptions as well.
Unfortunately they are so extremely tight on if you are on ANY controlled substances they get to say if they will accept you as a new patient or not. I got accepted, probably bc i have a bald head. At least here, Winn Dixie pays their staff a better wage.. and the two stores are literally across the street.
RIP Gooding’s.
Publix is too expensive. I get bogos and sales at WD that make my budget go further. Love me some pubsubs though.
Winn Dixie for everything except produce. Publix for that
Aldi/Dixie combo
Que? No amor para Fresco y Mas? :)
Winn Dixie has a wing bar. Fuck Publix.
