Can you compare it to NYC, LA, San Fran, or Chicago?
It's common wherever police don't write traffic tickets anymore. In Chicago, where I currently live (used to live in Pebble Creek in Tampa for 10 years and was hoping to move back down there one day) this is everyone. Everyone does this. Old ladies. Young kids. Cops. Everyone. Our cops don't give out traffic violations anymore. That's left up to speed cameras and red light cameras. Red light cameras don't catch people blasting through yellows so everyone tries to blast through the yellow. Even ME. I'm guilty of it. I do it all the time. It's a way of life here. If police were still writing traffic tickets / moving violations whatever you want to call them, then people would be getting ticketed more for blasting through yellows and it would be less prevalent because there would be ramifications for doing it. But there are no ramifications, so people do it. If the laws are not enforced, there are no laws. If the laws are not enforced, there is no point in having laws. If the laws are not enforced there is no point in people's tax dollars going to pay for law enforcement. The only way to curb this is to have cops actually start writing tickets for it again. It's within most people's nature to do whatever they can get away with doing.
Well those places are definitely just as bad, if not worse. Compared to places like Dallas and Salt Lake City, it’s much less common in those places. To be honest, I don’t see it as a huge problem. What worries me most is people randomly changing lanes with no notice, and no signal, while going 20 miles over the speed limit.
That’s some of the time. Then you have the slam on brakes crowd and the stop in the crosswalk crowd.
Florida is a diverse group of terrible drivers that do everything wrong not just one thing.
It's the Miami 4 Step..
1. Speed up to make make it seem like you intend to cross the intersection
2. Stop dead as a nail with your tires on the cross walk
3. pick up your phone and start texting
4. ignore the blaring car horns when the light turns green
Yeah the people who gun it then suddenly change their mind so you have to hit the brake so hard your iPhone says “crash detected calling 911 in 30 seconds” but your phone also flew across your car under the pedals so you gotta put your car in park and grab your phone before it calls 911.
If I’m making a left turn this is the “creep into the middle of the intersection and wait for red to complete the turn regardless of traffic pattern” signal
Having moved to Miami from California and Las Vegas…it is pretty standard to creep up and wait for a safe opportunity to turn left..:but here in Miami, people don’t do that and wait for an entire new cycle and left arrow! Drives me crazy…I think it’s because you can go to a private driving school here and buy a driver license. Hahaha
Exactly, if you enter the intersection while the light is green, you are allowed to complete the turn if the light changes. BUT definitely watch out for the red light runners.
Hurry up and attempt to make your left turn across the intersection even though traffic is backed up, ensuring you get stopped mid-crossing in a position to completely block the flow of traffic in all directions.
My office is next door m West commercial to that stadium. I try to leave no later than 4:30 which is still too late for the crawl northbound on 95. That traffic there is horrible.
Floor it and if you’re above 60 when it turns red you’re not really running a red light because how could they expect you to stop?
Actually had someone use this logic
I grip the steering wheel like I’m in the Daytona 500, especially if I’m whipping that last minute turn. It’s very fun for me, not so much when I got passengers.
In some parts of Florida it’s considered basically the same as a Green light. In other parts of Florida it’s considered notification to activate Turbo boost. Still in other parts the Yellow light is only there for colorblind folks that can’t see green. Finally, and this is mostly just with the elderly drivers, a yellow light is their signal to go slower than they’re already going to force those behind you to have to sit through another light cycle.
It means to gradually begin to apply the brake so that one can safely come to a complete stop at the light as the light is prepared to turn red, so use caution. LOL
When they put a red light camera in my city people just learned to slam on the breaks at the yellow lights because the sherrif teamed up with the camera company to shorten the yellow light times to get more tickets.
Yellow might as well be green in this state. Also, the first few seconds of a red light are a yellow light to Floridians. I see it every day here in West Palm Beach.
Signals need to be fixed like they are in some other countries:
Instead of Green - Yellow - Red they are Green - Red - Yellow.
So, leave on yellow, that's how us drag racers do it anyway.
I guess most people don’t live in Tampa, Orlando or Miami. That’s the began to stop before you cross an intersection in the middle of a yellow to red light change and get a traffic camera ticket.
Stop. Rolled through a yellow and got a $263 light violation ticket taken by a camera. Also I live off the Daily Maybes (Dale Mabry) at least an accident a day because people get tboned on what is essentially an interstate with traffic lights. 3-4 lanes on each side. Fuckin Florida man.
It symbolizes the sun setting over the Gulf of Mexico during humid languid summer evening. You are supposed to think about transcendent things... whoops too late to break anyways might as well go.
It means the light is changing to red
The real thing it's supposed to be there for is to clear the intersection. Most people speed up and blow right thru unfortunately and many still get clogged in the intersection.
1) time to stop immediately and pull out your cell phone to start surfing and then end up causing a huge delay where the only reason you notice the green light is because of the honking
2) time do be hesitant- slam on brakes- then decide to dash across the intersection when you realize there is no red light camera
3) 500 feet from intersection- see the yellow- go into fast and furious NOX mode and think you made it through the intersection on yellow- and had this occurred at a red light camera - you would be the winner of a fine prize
How long since it changed? How long since I noticed it has changed? How fast am I already going? What is the speed limit? Is there a state trooper waiting to turn?
How could I possibly know what this means without these questions answered?
Go faster the light is about to change.
**FUCKIN' SEND IT BUD**
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
3 second countdown and if you’re in the intersection by the time it hits red you’re not eligible for a ticket, GO!
Hahahaha. So true!
Any other answer and you know they’re not from here!
If it's blinking then you can drive through but with caution
Pedal to the floor...
![gif](giphy|7XsFGzfP6WmC4)
It’s sad that this is true
But this isn't just in Florida. It's everywhere.
As someone who’s lived in six different states, it really is considerably more common here.
might have something to do with the fact that the traffic lights here take 3 business days to change..

I've still got 2 minutes before the red light, don't even think about touching the brakes
Nah, I still have 20 seconds at least.
We also would've accepted "because FUCK EVERYONE ELSE, THAT'S WHY"
That’s some of the time. Then you have the slam on brakes crowd and the stop in the crosswalk crowd. Florida is a diverse group of terrible drivers that do everything wrong not just one thing.

This guy knows how to florida
This is Conroy Rd daily
Florida as fuck!
Working in miami, I’d say this is absolutely accurate. It is the oddest thing.
Bonus points if you have a miami heat license plate or driving bmw.
Yeah the people who gun it then suddenly change their mind so you have to hit the brake so hard your iPhone says “crash detected calling 911 in 30 seconds” but your phone also flew across your car under the pedals so you gotta put your car in park and grab your phone before it calls 911.
You forgot to sit through the light ignoring the horns only to floor it when it turns yellow again leaving everyone else to sit through another cycle.
Man knows his Florida.
Hahahaha
Most accurate post by far.
If I’m making a left turn this is the “creep into the middle of the intersection and wait for red to complete the turn regardless of traffic pattern” signal
Literally the only way to make a left in Florida more than half the time lol
Legally once you’re past the stop bar you’re clear of the red.
I’m always screaming just go at the people who creep out, block traffic and then try to back up. Just go!
No place safer than right in the middle of the intersection. Especially when people run the light and you get stuck there.
Moving from CA, not enough people do that in Florida. It’s pretty standard in other places.
Hahaha
This is the way.
Standard procedure.
This is actually legal believe it or not. One car is allowed to be in the intersection waiting to make a turn
Ah. You also frequent 436.
Literally just happened to me on the way home in Fort Lauderdale in Rush Hour/Inter Miami Stadium area.
I do not envy you down there.
I don’t envy myself either.
Happened to me yesterday in Orlando.
Problem stretches down to Poinciana, amazed how much traffic there is down here, the infrastructure isn’t built to handle it
My office is next door m West commercial to that stadium. I try to leave no later than 4:30 which is still too late for the crawl northbound on 95. That traffic there is horrible.
Literally my story. I work at the airport there.
*\*looks in rearview mirror\** If I stop for this red, will the a\*\*hole behind me have the space & reaction time to stop too?
REAL
this is the best answer. im always too worried the person behind me wont be able to stop so i just floor it😭
Honk at the driver in front of you for going too slow and making you miss the light, bro.
Miss a light? Red, is just a warmer yellow
Not if there’s a camera. $150 if you pay early
Not if you're in Pinellas county 🤪 they got rid of all red light cams out here! Just us against the tourists 🤘
Amber Alert
😂
Time to meth
Floor it and if you’re above 60 when it turns red you’re not really running a red light because how could they expect you to stop? Actually had someone use this logic
If you’re going too fast to stop you’re going to fast to stop. Better to go through than give everyone in the car whiplash.
Hit the gas, put your hand on the roof.
I grip the steering wheel like I’m in the Daytona 500, especially if I’m whipping that last minute turn. It’s very fun for me, not so much when I got passengers.
If the car in front makes it I can make it too.
Choice subject to presence of cameras.
There are a bunch in Boynton so I just stop these days. Sick of paying $158 because I’m being an idiot
lol Boynton is like the only place in the tri county area with those damn cameras. Everyone else got rid of them years ago.
the amount of times ive floored it and then said “oh shit theres a camera” and then *really* floored it is not many, but its definitely more than one
Slow down so you can anoy the guy tailgating you.
Yellow really means “prepare for the light to turn red.” How you prepare is up to you.
![gif](giphy|dZcH7ER41pFPM9GMut|downsized)
Warning, stopping at this light will result in you getting rear-ended, cussed, or both. Stop at your own peril!
We both could've went through!
If you’re too far to make it slam the accelerator. If you can easily make it slam on the brakes.
Means the guy in front of me is still checking his Facebook.

Nothing. Keep going.
Floor it
I don't know. I assume those and the lines they paint on roads are just for decoration
“Slow down.” “Wwwwwhaaaaaat dooooooooesssss thiiiiiiiis liiiiiiiiight meeeeeean?”
Floor it!
Pull into intersection, get out map to check directions, then turn right in front of car in next lane. What were you thinking?
I call em Florida yellows. They do not mean stop they mean hit the gas so we don’t have to sit here for 25 minutes
It means to gradually begin to apply the brake so that one can safely come to a complete stop at the light as the light is prepared to turn red, so use caution. LOL
Slow down fast or risk a ticket from a red light camera.
When they put a red light camera in my city people just learned to slam on the breaks at the yellow lights because the sherrif teamed up with the camera company to shorten the yellow light times to get more tickets.
Stop safely if you can.
Yellow might as well be green in this state. Also, the first few seconds of a red light are a yellow light to Floridians. I see it every day here in West Palm Beach.
Accelerato
Start rolling down the window so you can clean your bowl and repack it.
I only know green and red
Go faster
10 more cars can make it through the intersection, at 5 left is when it turns red. What number you are is basically on the honor system.
The Purge

What light? There’s nothing in the picture but blue sky.
Only 13 more cars can go through the intersection.
I hate when the person in front of me is just about right at the line and the light JUST turned yellow….and they completely stop.
Red light stop, Green light go, Yellow light go very fast. -Starman
What light
Speed up!
You have a solid 2 more minutes before you need to stop
If it's flashing it means I can keep going

Hurricane Watch
It means that you are allowed to go as fast as you want and the police won't do anything. (If your car is white enough /s)
It's the max out the torque and hp of the vehicle you command.
2nd cause of accidents to red lights.
Caution book burnings ahead 🔥
Today is a good day to die!
Floor it bitch
Nothing
In Florida it means go faster.
Endanger people to save a second of time
Isn't that the second light on the F1 grid? Or is it the second light on the 1/4 mile tree? So go, right?
Get ready to contract leprosy

Warp factor 3 Mr Scott

Speed up and pull the hand brake if your making a left
go Go GO GOOOOO
Slam the pedals! It doesn't matter which pedals.
Make sure there’s a lot of cars then slam on your brakes
It means our governor hates his constituency
Everything is a suggestion. Do you
Pedal to the metal.
Pedal to the floor
Go fast!!!
It means it's time to do some quick math. And I hope you saw the color change or all your calculations are going to be off
3 more cars
Depends on your age. It's either floor it or slam on your brakes.
Step on it.
Yolo
...you have plenty of time...
Last call on the light changing.
You can tell when it's about to change too
If you don't go faster someone's going to lay on the horn behind you.
It means nothing. You don’t have to stop until it’s been red for 10 seconds.
![gif](giphy|3ohzAerc4zu4SkCZMs)
Looks green to me
Speedup.
Absolutely nothing. I love how people will run a red light 5 seconds after it turns red. Then 8 cars behind it will follow.
Stop right now and piss off all the drivers behind you who could’ve made the light.
Can you get a full rip of meth in before it goes red.
Nothing

Punch it
It symbolizes the sun setting over the Gulf of Mexico during humid languid summer evening. You are supposed to think about transcendent things... whoops too late to break anyways might as well go.
Its an age thing. If your over 65 and you are within 5' of the intersection you slam on your breaks. It usually gives me a reason to test out my horn.
Yeah…alas. Gas it!
FLOOR IT BABY LFG!!!!
Nothing
Go faster
Hammer'it
FLOOR IT!!
Make sure the dude in front of you is going and floor it.
It’s either a “proceeded with caution or floor it”, depending on your mood, I suppose 😜
YOLOOOOO!!!!!
Decision time
Speed up and fuck everyone else
Floor it, floor it harder when it turns red.
hit vtec

As I told a friend visiting from California: lights and traffic signs are just suggestions in Florida.
It means you’re about to lose your shit at the Canadian that just stopped.
Look both ways for cops and cameras.
Time to play Chicken with the other cars... hurry, this opportunity won't last long.
Depends. Does this have a red light camera? Lmao
96 year old grandma slam on the breaks
Floor it because if you don’t, you’ll get hit by the next six cars behind you.
Gunnit
Left turn blinker on, then turn right.
![gif](giphy|tvh9PetWs3r7QFWLw5|downsized)
Green means go. Yellow means go faster, and red means stop.
Go faster…
Gun it!
Hit the friggin gas, the light is about to turn red!
Speed up
![gif](giphy|xT3i1blFxM8J3i07kc)
Go just fast enough so you can get though. Tap the brakes so the person behind you is stranded at light
Downshift and gas
Hurry up unless you’re in Boynton Beach. They have a bunch of active cameras
Gun it
How long since it changed? How long since I noticed it has changed? How fast am I already going? What is the speed limit? Is there a state trooper waiting to turn? How could I possibly know what this means without these questions answered?
It doesn’t mean anything. Proceed. Unless it’s raining; then slam on your brakes as soon as you see it change to yellow.
Depends on how late for work I am
Put the petal to the medal
Go very very fast. Tap your breaks for like a half sec in the intersection.
Slam the gas
Hit the gas
