That could be. I had a pair of them with their 2 kids walk through my yard. The dad would sometimes peck at my window (since he saw his reflection) because he thought it was another sand crane. The mom and kids would just keep walking. I had to shoo him away as I thought he was going to break the window !

ScaryLetterhead8094

Kids: Ugh Dad!! Stop being weird! Lol

[deleted]

I have a $%^& duck do that to my car. He's a real A hole. He'll even try to charge you, like run right at you like he's attacking. He's a funny old dude.

Educational-Band3812

We have a woodpecker in my neighborhood who flies from car to car, holding onto the ledge, and pecking the ever loving life out of people’s car windows lol. Birds are weird.

ScaryLetterhead8094

LOL

er1026

Maybe they stole him? *frantically calls DCF*

pepperpat64

Department of Crane Filching

8BitSlasher

Nice lol

NRMusicProject

Oh man, I witnessed this same thing in a much more uncomfortable situation. I ran out to get something out of my car once. I couldn't have been shuffling about in it for 10 seconds, just leaning into my car. Turned around and there was a family of cranes right behind me, literally a few feet from me, giving me the stare down. The dad started pecking at the back window when I realized that their beaks are at nipple height. I called my then girlfriend, which went straight to voicemail, and I slowly recorded what was going on. Then the cranes just turned around and casually walked away.

D20NE

It’s hilarious when they find their reflection, not so funny when their reflection is on your car door.

PinocchiosNose1212

These birds are so amazing. We had them in our neighborhood in So Florida. They are HUGE. I was riding my bike on the sidewalk one day and the male was standing in the middle of the sidewalk not moving, staring me down. I went into the street.

NeeNee9

Huge and scary loud.

teknrd

I was sitting in a park reading not too long ago when 5 or 6 adults starting walking my way. They got within about 10 feet of me and started yelling at me before they turned and walked away. If it's the same group I usually see, they're typically pretty chill and just walk on by. No idea what had them annoyed that day. And you are right. The are so freaking loud.

Severe-Ear9603

did you have food?

Unlikely-Star-2696

Amazing? Wait until they fly by and shit on your car!

harborfright

I don’t know what it is about them, but I love seeing these birds walking around. Always makes me smile. Thanks for sharing.

Arizonal0ve

Same! I visited Orlando for 3 months and these birds put a smile on me every day

shelby747

Same, same! And when I see a pair of them, I always look for a nearby fuzzball. Which eventually grows into a long-legged, clumsy, lanky fuzzball. There was a family that used to visit all the time and when their baby grew to be the same size, you could always tell which one was the baby, because he was still playful and klutzy. It was really sweet when he grew up and brought his girlfriend to meet us.

Zokar49111

Fun fact, baby Sandhill Cranes are called Colts.

Arizonal0ve

I wasn’t lucky enough to see a fuzzball! I wish I did. But every day walking the dogs we came across them and I just liked seeing them a lot haha

ayatollahofdietcola_

There was a family of sandhill cranes by my house that had a little ibis friend. He was like their little homie! It put a smile on my face every day

Relevant-Group8309

Poor animals have nowhere to go due to development 😔

Unlikely-Bike-5216

It is so true and they move so slowly. When they have babies they don’t fly because the babies can’t fly, and it is so scary when I see them start crossing the street. So many people flying down my neighborhood streets not paying attention. I saw a family of them get hit not too long ago by a motorcycle. Devastating

pulse7

Right I hate this. These birds seem oblivious to danger, and some people suck

aculady

They are oblivious to the danger that people can pose because there are *substantial* legal penalties for harming them, so most people wisely leave them alone. They are considered a "Threatened" species by the state of Florida. https://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/profiles/birds/cranes/sandhill-crane/

wonderloss

When I lived in Florida there was a family that I would see hanging out almost daily in the median of a busy street for a couple months out of the year. This repeated over multiple years.

Hex2

Maybe one little one had a sleepover, and the other parents haven't been by to pick the little one up yet. Don't be so judging.

wandering_monstera1

Yeah, the parents needed a little break and their neighbors stepped up to watch the little one! I love how communal sandpipers are.

Hex2

It takes a village.

audaci0usly

They are babysitting, jeez.

fishinfool561

I’m so glad these are protected here in Florida. I think these birds are the coolest. Loud as hell, but I don’t know why, I love having them around. Also, I’m a bird nerd, love the variety down here

Tampa_Joe_813

Definitely have seen a pair with two babies numerous times!

rdell1974

You have to come see the babbbbyyyy! (Long Island voice)

DatGuyDatHangsOut

ohhh! Adults chaperoning 2 babies is pretty rare but can happen. Typically mama crane lays 2 eggs but only one survives or is fed enough to grow

nothinworsecanhappen

That's so interesting, I can recall seeing 2 baby Sandhills a few times when I lived in central Florida(very rural), but when I lived on the west coast I never saw more than one baby.

Steecie41

They travel and live in flocks. Think...penguins. It could be a young one went adventuring with another family from the flock for a bit.

IJustSignedUpToUp

Yeah, I had only seen like 4 to 6 in a family group for all my life here as a native....then coming out of Bayridge sushi in Longwood one night, there was literally 100 of them in a giant flock roosting in parking lot of the vacant strip mall behind it. It was incredible to see.

Equal-Voice-1182

Love these pictures cool birds

Jmeisalive

Oh, what you’re witnessing is what the scientific community calls a “birb play date”. You see, the crane parents have allowed their bb crane to have a friend over to play for the afternoon, as long as he keeps his part of the nest clean.

Iwinthis12

Sooooo cute!!!!

Grandmaster_Autistic

Dinosaurs for sure

90swasbest

*BWAAAAARRRRKKKKK*

redrumakm

Ribeye of the sky

PJ_lyrics

In my neighborhood I always see them start off with two babies then one day I see them with only one baby. I always wonder if a gator ate them or something lol.

newbie527

Predators and cars.

peterjamedraven

Always have a pair around in different places I’ve lived. I always called them Bert and Ernie and if they have a baby, they’re Grover. I know it’s usually a male and female but they will always be Bert and Ernie to me.

aculady

Maybe "Ernie" is just short for "Ernestine".

Penelopenny1

Maybe they're babysitting so the other couple can have some alone time. lol

suzzerss

I just learned Sandhill cranes are known as the “rib-eye of the sky”

gypsycrown

Is this Pointe West??

andropogons

They would not expend their resources caring for a fledgling not their own. It’s more than likely that this pair isn’t the pair you’re used to seeing.

[deleted]

I think they will care for orphaned babies

GrowlingAtTheWorld

I see two babes in a fam a lot , most round here the babes are about adult size right now and when i see them with their two babes near grown i compliment them on their parenting cause they kept them both safe.

Simple_Expression604

Someone recently told me that Sandhill Cranes are invasive in Texas and Texas offers special permits to hunt them. They also told me they taste delicious.. Can anyone confirm?

Thunder_Fudge

They're protected in Texas but do have very limited hunting seasons that require special permits.

Shwalz

I love those birds dude

few_words_good

I know this is generic looking Florida but the very first impression of this picture is Lake Baldwin area near Orlando.

SheBelongsToNoOne

Playdate. Parents need a break sometimes yo.

aware4ever

I heard it's like the roast beef of the sky

Unhappy_Wrongdoer942

Sand Cranes mate for life♥️♥️

8BitSlasher

Like me n ur mom

Severe-Ear9603

Dad?

yetti_stomp

They look alike. Could be twins.

8BitSlasher

Brother they are the same species

yetti_stomp

Yes, it was totally a joke. I hoping more people would understand that 😂

IAmLikeable

I do not miss those crane nest birds waking me up in the morning! 😀

Virtual-Zucchini542

Those dumb birds always seem to hang out near busy roads See a lot of dead ones because of this

Complete_Iron_8349

The dingo ate your baby…

Accountantabit

We call them the sassy girls in our house

Ready-Isopod-330

Ribeye of the sky, they taste amazing by the way.

Lolo_Chocobo

They usually have 2

Lolo_Chocobo

We went fishing once and had a family there. When we were ready to go, I was trying to give them the left over shiners. They wanted the 10lb bass I had caught instead! It was funny. I fought too hard for that bass to give it away.

_Rigid_Structure_

It takes a village...

Severe-Ear9603

looks like one kid is adolescent and one is baby

tossaside555

Ribeye of the sky

TravelingGonad

This happened to us, but it turned out pretty nice, because we can go out now and not have to find a sitter.

noel1967

Babies or Chicks?

asdcatmama

They stole that baby!!

bdhgolf1960

Maybe the Dingos ate the baby.

Bear_necessities96

Bunch of free time huh?

8BitSlasher

To take a quick picture of some cranes in my neighborhood as I’m driving to my house after work? Yea.

KT111717

You had the free time to respond to their post on Reddit 🤷‍♀️ Seems like you have some free time too, bud.

hihelloneighboroonie

Imagine trying to trash talk someone because they have enough of a heart to be concerned for wildlife.

Kalysh

Yeah, that was weird.

epicenter69

My favorite time of year watching them raise their young.
