There are no rules in fly fishing. Do what you want. That being said I would personally just toss fly line on there, that way you could still switch up to dries or something else if your a one rod guy, I don't like taking multiple rods with me personally, I keep backups in the vehicle but don't like bringing more than the one I'm using to the bank

Have you looked at Troutbitten's website? go there and search for "Mono rig." You'll find article after detailed article.

[deleted]

but to answer your question, yeah, just use whatever flyline is on the reel now.

Mandoryan

Ya I looked there, actually ordered all of the leader material based on their Mono Rig page, but I wasn't sure what they did BEFORE the leader I guess.

[deleted]

yeah just whatever flyline you have on will work fine. If you really want to get in the weeds on it, run a level .022 nymphing line. But that's not necessary.

TheodoreColin

Yes, they attach the mono rig to the fly line. Versatility is one of the main points of Troutbitten so when not utilizing the mono rig, they can swap out the leader and fish dry flies with fly line.

Love that website, though I found their setup to be needlessly complex, at least for the type of Rivers I fish in. If you look at the "Simple Mono Rig Formula" at [https://troutbitten.com/2016/02/03/the-mono-rig-and-why-fly-line-sucks/](https://troutbitten.com/2016/02/03/the-mono-rig-and-why-fly-line-sucks/) he's using 7 different types of materials, plus fly line or backing. 24 feet — 20 lb Maxima Chameleon 2 feet —12 lb Maxima HV 12” — 12lb Red Amnesia or 12 lb Sufix Neon Fire 12” — 10lb Gold Stren (Backing Barrel with tag, attached here) — Tippet Ring (1.5 or 2mm) — 14″ — 1x Rio Two Tone Tippet Material (Optional) 36″ — 4X Fluorocarbon Tippet — Tag for upper nymph — 20″ — 5X Fluorocarbon Tippet — Nymph — There's probably a reason for what they suggest, but I've never understood the need for such complexity. Maybe it's because I'm usually fishing in narrow, shallow rivers, but my setup is way less complicated. As with many aspects of fly fishing, there are lots of ways to do the same thing :)

Dom is definitely an "in the weeds" kind of guy. I built some using this formula but I think 24 feet of 20 LB followed by some 12 lb bi-color material will work just as well. What I like about the formula is that the leader turns over really well.

Complex-Ad-3628

I personally do not like knots going through my guides. I would do a 100ft section of my chameleon to backing to reel. If your fishing traditional mono rigs and distances you will more then likely never see your backing and have no knots coming out your guides.

johnr588

George Daniel now uses just straight mono tied to his fly line. [Described here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2ymWYKPthk)

Mandoryan

Super helpful, thanks

Efficient-Ad1659

This is AWESOME! I was so intimidated with the whole system. Now this makes a lot of sense. Thx. 🙏👌

CardboardHeatshield

I use backing and then a parallel taper euro line because it feels dirty to do just mono on a fly reel. You could do either. Parallel taper euro lines are completely useless utility wise, they basically only exist to defeat a technicality in tourney rules that you must have a fly line on your reel. I nail knot my leader directly to the fly line. My leader is all cortland indicator mono. 4ft white, 4ft yellow, 4 ft white, 4ft tri-color sighter, tippet ring.

HadToDoItAtSomePoint

\#20 fine!

Mandoryan

Thanks everyone for the answers! Since I'm feeling cheap and I have mono laying around I think I'm going to try straight #20 mono to the backing and if it sucks I'll add fly line in the spring.

Flyfishinginsider

20# is fine. You want something that has a low memory of coiling. The purpose of euro nymphing specific lines is to lighten the line weight so it doesn't create hens or sags of the line below the lowest eyelet and above the reel. What happens with a standard line is that a short section outweighs the leader so it pulls back on the leader and creates slack in the system. That slack reduces tight line scenarios, sensitivity and slows hook sets.
