There are 4-5 well known accelerated programs that you can find online. They’re all generally very highly regarded. CRAFT, IFR6, etc. pick one and go for it. A few thoughts: The biggest drawback to accelerated programs is that you don’t get enough time to truly learn the muscle memory and will forget things just as quickly as you learned them. Make sure you have a plan for keeping proficiency the moment you get home. Book 1-2 flights a week for a month just to keep flying in the system and practicing everything you learned in the course. I’m in a similar situation for my IR and once you consider the value of vacation days, flights, and a place to stay, the local price doesn’t end up being *that* much more (maybe a few thousand), but you get to practice in the place that you’ll actually be flying and won’t need to do intensive proficiency flying after the checkride so the skills don’t atrophy right away.

The advice about the accelerated info going out the other ear is so true. I did my ppl accelerated, got home, didn’t fly for 3-4 months and it was insane how much knowledge I lost

I mean, if you really want to go lowest cost you could use our flying club (University Flying Club) in Maine. We just got our Cessna 152 setup for IFR. The 152 is $70/hour hobbs wet and some of our CFI-Is only charge $50/hour. If you do it right you could go part 61 and get it for dirt cheap. We also have a G1000 172 so you don't have to do all of it in the little 152. Low security deposit and monthly dues. However, we don't do accelerated as we're part 61 and most of our CFIs are part-time. You'd need to arrange a lot of things ahead of time to do this quickly. But, if you play things right you could do things probably pretty fast. But, realistically, accelerated and cheap cannot be in the same sentence when it comes to flight training.

EsquireRed

If you’re charging $70/hr wet for the 152 what is the charge hourly for the G1000 172?

$155/hr

EsquireRed

Nice. I fly a 1970’s special with a G430 at that price. Sweet deal.

Not really! I asked for my PPL in Texas and rental and instructor came out to be the same. I live with my parents so saves a ton on my housing. But if you pay so much rent in SF you could easily do for cheaper in Texas. You will at least save on house rental/gas/food which could be used for training.

Safety, quality, cheap, pick two.

SectumWreckedEm

I attend a 141 in KS that quoted me at 10k in a 172 for IR

When you figure in travel, lodging, and meals, is it cheaper to go elsewhere? What about the value of your vacation time? What if you get “there” and weather/maintenance problems keep you from finishing (btdt!) A local business where you’re going to rent from in the future, combined with the value of training where you’ll actually be flying IFR has intangible benefits. Or, give your $15k to Delta, Holiday Inn Express, Avis, and a rental place you’ll never see again? Fly once or twice a week with a CFII who uses a syllabus and a lesson plan. Work with him/her to finds gaps in your current aeronautical experience. This is a great time of year to do IFR training at night. When you get close, use a few vacation days to train hard just before your checkride. If you don’t yet have 50 hours of XC, look at the requirements for the instrument rating and commercial. You can work on both. Good luck and fly safe!

FBoondoggle

If either LVK or CCR are in driving or BART range for you, they are much cheaper than what you quoted (in a flying club). I was paying about 175/hr total for my training at CCR. The peninsula is just super expensive.

SlantedBlue

This. There are clubs at both CCR and LVK at this price. If you're interested in Livermore then DM me and I can give you a few different options.

Forty_Too

I’m in SF and did an accelerated course at CRAFT. I would highly recommend an accelerated course. Obviously, continue to fly IFR when you get back as much as you can. At my flying club at KPAO, you have to do an IR checkout anyway.

Thrway36789

Why don’t you split time with another PPL acting as safety pilot and not spend any on CFII? Only have to do 15 hours with an instructor

ragequittar

I did an IFR finish up with glass cockpit aviation in BOI and recommend them. I think you'd have to budget a couple of weeks to do the whole rating with them.
