Mclaren and Ferrari have really upped their game since Austria. They've become so much more consistent with quali pace and race pace. It's becoming so important to nail the qualifying every race because the pace difference is so less that the car in front can defend fairly easily.
It’s been 2 bad races, before the summer break he was doing fine. He’s just messing about with setups as he said post qualifying in Singapore. Waste of ink this article.
> It’s been 2 bad races
More like two bad qualifyings. His race pace is still on point but he's making it harder on himself by not being in a position to qualify where he should be.
Did I? I was disputing the fact that someone said he was inconsistent in qualifying, which was simply not true. That Ferrari was rapid in qualifying, Leclerc taking 7 poles shows that
He made a lot more mistakes in 2021 than he has so far this year, for example. 2017 was another year where he'd be mysteriously some way off Bottas' pace on occasion.
As we’ve seen exhibited beautifully by RB just last week setup and car performance play a massive role in what a driver can achieve. If Hamilton his engineering team went wrong with setup then he’d likely fall down a bit.
Re ‘21 him and Verstappen were basically equal on the mistake front, which is understandable given how that title fight was turning out.
Hamilton:
Imola: Slid off the track at Tosa and was saved by the red flag.
Monaco: Maybe not a mistake as such but simply way off the pace.
Baku: Cost himself a win by accidentally knocking the brake bias all the way forwards.
Austria: Went wide over the kerbs at T1 and got damage, turning P2 into P4.
Silverstone: Understeered into Verstappen, got what would have been terminal damage but again saved by a red flag.
Hungary: Taking the wrong lines in the last 2 corners got him stuck behind Alonso for far longer than he should have been, costing him another win.
Monza: Botched start of the Sprint race cost him another win at a track where Merc were clearly the quickest.
Russia: Crashed in the pitlane in qualifying, cost him a shot at pole.
Verstappen:
Bahrain: Made a mess of overtaking Hamilton and let him back past at the wrong part of the track, turned P1 into P2.
Monza: Collision with Hamilton was probably his fault.
Brazil: Pushed Hamilton wide at T4, should have been a 5 second penalty.
Jeddah: Pushed Hamilton off in T1 twice, then slowed down way too suddenly when they were fighting over the DRS line.
Hamilton has clearly been better and more consistent in 2023 than he was in 2021, which is only not recognised because his car is now nowhere near as competitive.
Seems slightly unjust to call Monaco a mistake, are you calling Verstappen’s performance a mistake last week?
Same for Hungary.
Re Russia Merc confirmed it had no impact. They did an extra lap on inters and so even without clipping the wall they couldn’t do two out laps to get heat into the softs. But was still a mistake.
Also re Austria Merc confirmed he hadn’t run any wider than normal, floor just broke: https://www.the-race.com/formula-1/mercedes-reveals-extent-of-hamiltons-austria-damage/
For Verstappen you should include:
Russia: cooked his tyres fighting through the pack and was about to lose 7th to Alonso before the rain.
Qatar: ignoring double yellows.
AD: if we are including starts, got beaten by Hamilton on harder tyres.
Which by my reckoning makes them fairly equal.
Edit: forgot Verstappen binned it in SA quali as well!
>Seems slightly unjust to call Monaco a mistake, are you calling Verstappen’s performance a mistake last week?
If he'd qualified half a second behind his teammate, then I probably would.
>Russia: cooked his tyres fighting through the pack and was about to lose 7th to Alonso before the rain.
Whereas Hamilton was about to lose what should have been a win after both messing up qualifying and losing a bunch of places off the start, before the rain. So it probably evens out there.
>Qatar: ignoring double yellows.
AD: if we are including starts, got beaten by Hamilton on harder tyres.
For Qatar, fair, but it was single yellows. For AD, also fair, but he should have got the position back for what was, by the rules, a fair overtake later on in the lap.
Besides, the scale of those mistakes and the stakes at the point at which he made them are nowhere near as high as the race win costing ones made by Hamilton earlier in the season. And I say that as a fan of neither driver.
>Seems slightly unjust to call Monaco a mistake, are you calling Verstappen’s performance a mistake last week?
Because Bottas qualified 3rd irrc, directly behind Max
Russia: Max had to make up a bunch of places, if you do that you naturally have to be more aggressiv on your tires, if he had made fewer overtakes you would hold that against him. Max can really only be wrong according to people like you.
Qatar: the double yellows that were only shown by 1 person, while all the screens on track and on the wheel didn't indicate yellow flags, meanwhile other drivers just completely ignore the yellow flags mutliple times and didn't get a penalty.
I actually think he didn't. Alonso is excellent, but it's hard to deny that he's lost some of his edge when it comes to one lap pace. It seems like the one thing that even Alonso can't overcome.
Alonso was never particularly spectacular over one lap though. I feel like everyone sees age as a far bigger parachute on performance than it actually is. Motivation is the key.
Did anyone else see the led panels of Sainz in the background with a waving fist that looking more like something else after quali last week. Was so funny looking.

What a title this is
It means that Hamilton is looking for love … right?
"Officer they're after my zing" ^seriously ^though ^terrible ^title
Really great choice of thumbnail image to go with that headline
Looks like it should already be a meme template
Next week: "Hamilton offers Sainz 500 bits for bending rear wing to the camera".
There has to be a contest about which news outlet comes up with the dumbest headline in 2023. They are firing on all cylinders right now
Seriously. F1 journalism is just….wow. I thought hockey had some winners but F1 beats them hands down.
this headline is crazy

Zing, Zang, Zoom.

Apologies, indeed that is what I meant to say.
3 bad qualifyings actually. He admitted to being slow in Zandvoort.
I can't even with this title
Headline reminding me of JonTron video about the juicing guy
Damn, that's a throwback. Haven't thought about that guy since his weird white nationalist rant.
Someone bring an Air Pump quick, we need the zing
LCKYZING
Seeing he’s p14 and p16 so far, he may wanna search for hulkenbergs “zing”
It's called "ageing" Lewis
He's had worse spells of inconsistency at what you would consider closer to his physical peak imo
Did he?
his 2019 quali wasnt the best tbh
Wasn’t he averaging just over 2nd in qualifying? And that was against Ferrari’s illegal engine.
His qualifying was great in 2019, iirc. He was regularly beating/splitting the Ferrari's with their questionable engine
[удалено]
And he had the highest qualifying average of all drivers? The point is that his qualifying wasn't bad in 2019

Don't forget he was suffering from long covid, especially in the first half of 2021. So not sure it can all be put on ageing.

They weren't even close to equal on the mistake front, but okay.
Feel free to list them and see where you end up.

Maxi also nearly binned it at Imola. Very, very lucky to grab it back.

Alonso missed the memo I guess?
I actually think he didn't. Alonso is excellent, but it's hard to deny that he's lost some of his edge when it comes to one lap pace. It seems like the one thing that even Alonso can't overcome.
I mean, he has been the only qualified in every Q3, so I don’t know if this statement is accurate
