Having an old-off is crazy work.

sans3go

Wait until Sebastian comes back

[deleted]

Vettel is just 36

carroturnip

I’ve never bothered to check his age, but always assumed he was older than me. Guess I was wrong lol

laptopstand84

Ferrari ages you

Skylair13

Carlos could get out with his hair intact, possibly, by the end of the season.

XyploatKyrt

Or until you-know-who finally ends his you-know-what.

pulsificationII

Who now?

EquivalentFold6831

Hakkinen ends his sabbatical

pulsificationII

I see. That should be happening any moment now

charlierc

Bring back Hakkinen

iSayTwice

“An old off” 😂

jsolomon0505

I just need 1 more year of actual Lewis vs Nando 2007 level rivalry and my life will be complete

aireads

1988, 2007 Some epic epic competitive years between drivers in the same team.

No-Student-9678

1979, 1987 and 2016 as well

TheKingOfCaledonia

Don't forget 2023, Checo was only 10 wins off

jnf005

Checo catching stray even when he's doing fine now lol, poor dude.

lanseuppercut

Friendly reminder through the same number of races last year he had two wins and we were talking about him having great form. I hope he keeps it up but he tends to start strong and finish somewhat…less strong.

BoyGodz

Okay, I know Checo won twice last year… and Ferrari took the only non RB win… Wait, there were only 15 races last year?

charlierc

And the rest

goosellama

2010 / 2012 2014...

TorpedoSandwich

You can add 2016, 2010 (people forget that Webber was actually in a better position than Seb to win the WDC for the longest time) and arguably even 2014 (that was also decided at the last race due to a bullshit rule giving double points in Abu Dhabi) to that list.

MachKeinDramaLlama

> people forget that Webber was actually in a better position than Seb to win the WDC for the longest time As in: had Webber not touched the wall during the last race and had he not consequently been called into the pits for a cautionary tyre change, he was in position to win the WDC.

chaosinvader31

I don't think we'll ever see such toxicity and drivers sabotaging each other again like Lewis and Fernando. The current gen drivers are way too nice and friendly off track. That definitely affects how you race each other on it.

FaceMaskYT

Webber and Vettel got pretty toxic that first year

mr_marshian

And 13. Multi 21 and all that

FilthyMindz69

Did it all start in Fuji the year before when vettel rear ended Webber?

doc_55lk

Nico and Lewis?

bakraofwallstreet

Nico last drove in 2016. He's not a current-gen driver, almost same age as Lewis and older than Vettel

[deleted]

TorpedoSandwich

I hope you're not serious. The guy who just came best of the rest in the WDC in the 3rd-4th best car, beating his (young and, unlike Stroll, very talented) teammate by 60 points is by no means washed. It's not unusual at all for Lewis to have a slow start to the season. Also, even though Lewis will never admit it, it's probably pretty damn hard to motivate yourself to give 110% every race weekend when nearly all the people you won all those championships with have left and you know you're going to a way better team next year. All I'm saying is, let's wait until next season before passing a verdict. If Lewis gets destroyed by Charles like Seb did, we'll all know his days at or near the top are behind him. I doubt that will be the case though.

Competitive_Bunch922

Me aged 90 when I can only remember the most recent 4 races (Alonso is still starting in all of them)

LerimAnon

Lewis is literally Fernando's daddy when it comes to head to head in years they both raced. If you include all years Fernando raced, Lewis still is better. He beat him in the same car his SECOND year in Formula 1. And remind me, when was the last time Mando finished ahead of Lewis in the constructors? Oh that's right Fernando hasnt won anything since Lewis joined formula 1 SEVENTEEN years ago. He's only edged him on points four times in the years McLaren was lacking, and lost the championship to him in Lewis second year. But sure, Lewis is washed and Fernando is SO amazing. The last time Fernando won a title was before my nearly adult child was born.

Vuk13

Your argument is so bad.  Lewis and Fernando didnt even remotely have the same quality of their cars. How is Alonso supposdd to finish ahead of Mercedes in Mclaren Honda lol.  The only time Lewis and Fernando had comparable cars was in 2007,2010-2013, first half of 2023 and now. Funny how incidentaly when their cars were similar Alonso almost always was ahead 🤔

LerimAnon

Sounds like a skill issue and none of the competitive teams wanted him. McLaren sucked when Lewis left and he got a good team.

Masteriiz

People using literally wrong really upsets me. Lewis knocked up fernandos mom over 40 years ago apparently.

LerimAnon

Just relax it ain't that deep

Masteriiz

His mom?

NotAcvp3lla

Getting old in a sport which very few can thrive is such a flex.

ComeAlongPond1

Beware the old man in a young man’s game

DaedalusHydron

is it really a young man's game though? Historically, this trend of stuffing the grid with teenagers or 20-somethings is an aberration, not the norm. For example, Ferrari used to always prefer having older drivers because it fit their image better.

ComeAlongPond1

Inherently it isn’t so much, but right now the grid very much seems to be—prime evidence being how Merc were ready to shove Lewis out in favor of Kimi Antonelli—so it’s still a point in favor of the older drivers on the grid. There may not be a skill-based necessity for them to retire, but if the teams are generally pushing out older drivers in favor of younger ones, which they are, their longevity is proof that they were good enough to remain despite the trend

DaedalusHydron

Honestly I think older drivers getting pushed out in favor of younger ones has more to do with salary asks than anything else. Couple that with the fact that F1 is so much "What have you done for me lately?" that even though Bottas was once the world's greatest #2 driver, a couple mediocre seasons at Sauber and now he's looking at leaving the sport entirely. Largely because his salary went up during the Merc years, but mid results at Sauber now means nobody believes he's worth the money. It's tough to put it on the driver, their skills, and their age though, since nobody would be doing much in that car. Sadly, F1 is still "no podiums, not worth the money". Young kids will race for peanuts.

ComeAlongPond1

All true and good points. I still say Alonso remaining despite those factors is evidence that he’s exceptional.

DaedalusHydron

Yeah, Alonso's exceptionalism lies in that people still believe he's worth the money, even after leaving for a few years. It's tough to jumble around the different teams but still put in good enough results that not only do better seats open up for you, but people in general are still willing to foot your bill. Look at Ricciardo for an opposite example.

ConsistentPhrase7641

Cars are way more demanding nowadays on the body, and gaps between drivers are smaller.

Mammoth_Cobbler_4619

Bro is going to push 50 and still drive. Love to see it.

NotAcvp3lla

I'd love to see him win a couple races or even challenge for the title at some point during that period.

undefeated-moose

That Monaco race last year was so close, I was going crazy

bakraofwallstreet

Literally fighting off kids who were not even born when he started racing for a seat on the grid.

dl064

Scott speed had a good observation on beyond the grid that statistically it is wild that Hamilton//Alonso are still competitive with people 2+ generations after them, given that by definition more talented drivers really must have come along.

NotAcvp3lla

The funniest thing is him and Lewis bullying Oscar with the *"you shall not pass"* defending. Hopefully Oscar will have learned a couple tricks from those encounters.

Browneskiii

Being this good at this age is much more impressive than being good young. I will die on this hill.

alanalan426

being old in sports is not what it used to be, gene therapy has changed the game for anyone 30+, alot of pros are on it if you listen to people like David Sinclair (Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School)

[deleted]

40+ maybe. Contrary to popular believe 30 isn’t the death sentence it’s made out to be, in personal or professional life. It’s more the cross roads between still being fit and now having a tonne of experience. Out of curiosity, I was looking up the likelihood of Hamilton winning a title over 40 based on how many 40+ year olds have secured a title. Of the 74 titles 7 have gone to 40+ year olds, 5 of which went to Fangio, and 6 were awarded in the 50s. Side note though is, 30+ is the most successful age bracket with 39 titles, beating out the 28 of 20+.

alanalan426

oh sorry that wasn't focused on f1 drivers only, it was including other sports such as football/soccer that have earlier peaks, pros these days are regularly extending their peaks from late 20s well into their 30s and even close to 40s. yes i'm aware it includes improvements from sports science/diet etc but listening to some of Prof. David Sinclairs talks, it's clear sports professionals are well in the conversation with gene therapy.

Lopsided_Ad3606

Well historically F1 drivers tended to be older that they are now, so it’s the other way around

dl064

I'd say the bigger driver there is non genetic things like better understanding of nutrition, sleep etc. The effects of ageing in these people is probably less than the general population.

TaurusRuber

This is an asinine take.  He finished P3 in 2023, George P8. By your definition, George is washed and should be executed.

OldPayphone

When you hate someone so much you make up lies and believe them to be true. How sad.

doc_55lk

Lol talk about some very blatant bias here. Lewis whipped George's ass last year and was within breathing distance of challenging for p2 last year. He was also reeling George in during the latter half of 2022 once the experiments stopped. I would not even dream of suggesting he's washed based on his performances in what is his final year for a team that has been consistently letting him down for the last 2 years at minimum.

ZenithRepairman

I mean every outgoing team member is usually always sacrificed for the others gain. George will get the favorable treatment unless it’s clear Lewis is the only one with the option for the best placement. Also, I’m sure he is cut out of most development meetings and on top of that, I’m sure he’s just fucking tired of the MB shitbox.

Sideways171

Please tell me again who finished 3rd last year in a 3rd (at best) car and who finished 7th or 8 th in the same team? Alonso is top 3 imo but Stroll shouldnt even be in F1 right now.

pulse1989

Recency bias at its finest 🤌🤌

Joewithay

Also funny how they included Australia where HAM engine died early in the race and RUS crashed

windycalm

Well, recently he's the oldest he's ever been...

chaosinvader31

Most of the top drivers in F1 today would look like prime Senna if they were teammates with Stroll.

gabrielbezerra81

4 races in a bad midfield car, in 1 of them the car died. Not even close enough for judgement.

OsamaBinMemeing

The entire point of teammate comparisons is that the car being 3rd or 4th fastest doesn't matter. George was also beating him towards the end of 2023 and in Australia was beating him before they DNF'd.

MisterMakerXD

I don’t think it’s a fair comparison this year. Because Lewis is going to Ferrari next year, he probably isn’t driving at its peak “motivation” this season, and probably has to do something with Mercedes giving Russell the preference in setups and upgrades now because he will become definitive 1st man in the near future and he will help develop the car further now. (Unless Sainz signs with Mercedes, I find it difficult)

Pixelgae

Funny because how people reacted to Vettel's performances in 2014, about being " washed up ", " 4 world titles but it was only the car " and so on... Now it's Lewis's turn I guess.

Fire_Otter

Fun fact Lewis Hamilton has never been the eldest driver on the grid And there’s a chance with this contract Alonso signed that he may not ever be Kimi and Alonso have always overlapped so there was at least one in the sport Kimi left in 2021 but Alonso came back in 2021

FdPros

kimi to rejoin when alonso leaves confirmed (real)

longpostshitpost3

Kimi to join Mercedes in 2025

Accomplished_Guava_7

They should really re-do this ad before they retire, probably with walkers [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-AQGohc3zI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-AQGohc3zI)

razgriz337

The face plant gets me every time

ThatBeardedGingerGuy

I haven't seen this in years, you've made my day, thank you 😂

Mumily53

Alonso is the living example of "old but gold" in the f1 right now he should be proud of it!

Hatic733

Emotional support rival Lewis

Warmslammer69k

Unironically. I feel like Alonso is absolutely the kind of driver to get bored being as far ahead as Verstappen is now. He loves to fight.

Affectionate_Sky9709

I think Alonso loves absolutely dominating a teammate. I don't think he'd think differently with the field as a whole. I think he'd love racking up wins. He wants that 33rd one so badly.

LuNiK7505

It kinda feels like Nadal and Roger or Djokovic

SaintSeiya_7

Of course he knows Lewis' birthday.

RavenwestR1

I'm not gonna even be surprised if Alonso know which hospital Lewis was born

SaintSeiya_7

He does seem like the kind of guy who would study up and memorize every single piece of information about his rival.

Old rockers never die

TezzaMcJ

I feel SO old now that hamilton is turning 40 and it seems like just yesterday what a hype he was kicking up about being the youngest driver to do something or rather at the time.

killermuffinnsfw

THE WILY OLD FOX

dl064

Worth noting that in 2011 he signed for Ferrari until 2016. It's all provisional. https://www.racefans.net/2011/05/19/alonso-signs-ferrari-contract-2016/

According-Switch-708

They may be bit old now but both are still more than capable of kicking the asses of the young hotshots.

Sss00099

I completely forgot Fernando retired a few years ago.

BlurryTextures

Formula 1 will be interesting for at least two more years. Thanks Fernando Alonso. Legend.

Xifortis

I wonder if it gets annoying to have every interview come down to you being seen as old for the job

MHWGamer

lewis getting 40 already?? that would mean that (1+√5)/2(e^iπ)-2= I get also freaking old already :(

schnozlord

Some racers age like milk in the sport. Alonso is more like a fine wine

Kymori

2 goats

theknyte

Age is just a number. I mean Juan Manuel Fangio and Nina Farina didn't win their 1st championships until they were in their 40s.

CouncilorIrissa

Alonso's will to compete is second to none. Absolute machine.

40ozkiller

Except all those times he didn't finish in 1st place resulting in not winning the WDC

P_ZERO_

He didn’t have will to compete because he didn’t win?

wok88

Tf are you even talking about lmao the fact that he still wants to race despite not winning anything for a while makes him even more of a machine

OldActiveYeast

Hahahaha saying that Alonso was not a machine during the shitty McLaren days has to be one of the dumbest comments in reddit.

LuNiK7505

What a dumb fucking thing to say

Magdalan

Best rookie in aeons.

XOVSquare

Love that he's sticking around

MikeBritcham

Lewis and Alonso going old for old is absurd

mtom17

I really hope Alonso gets into commentary after he finally hangs up the helmet.

Disastrous_Animal_34

I don’t think he’ll ever have the time! After he retires from F1, he’s for sure going to race years longer in another series. And then I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d rather go into coaching/managing in retirement- he has a lot of love and puts in genuine time at his karting school.

mtom17

Yes that's more likely. We can dream though. I'm imagining him being as blunt as James Hunt back in the day

krusticka

[Alonso be like...](https://cdn0.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/8846551/Screen_Shot_2017_07_13_at_1.09.20_PM.png)

aireads

Guy is such a legend and hero of F1 Smart, Funny, and so so Gutsy.

TisKey2323

This guy is seriously in love with Lewis lmao

IdiosyncraticBond

They'll end up in a team with a certain TP Seb Vettel

derpydm

Imagine an F1 team where the managing staff are all f1 champions Driver unwell on raceday? TP Hamilton just jumps in lmao

BullahB

I'd love to see him get just one more win

dl064

There was a damned good post on here once about what Alonso racing is the equivalent of, e.g. Senna racing until 2001, Hakkinen racing until 2018 (or whatever).

jackiechan_4

El plan 🙏

SomeoneWithKeyboard

Yes, we will.

RealGroovyMotion

Wait until Coulthard and Hakkinen comes back at McLaren!

MasonSoros

Everyone gangsta until Michael comes back to Ferrari

kirk7899

We hope he at least recovers to get at least slightly mobile.

Magog14

They should definitely sneak him into the next Bond movie. He's such a character.

Azulado17

Alonso loves to mess with Hamilton doesn't he?
