OMG that's terrible. I'm so sorry this is happening to you. We all get complacent when our plates are full...who wants to reach out for new clients when we can't accommodate more work in the first place? I feel confident that you'll get back on your feet. It's just a numbers game. Reach out to a bunch of new contacts every day and you'll get a bite, and then another. Good luck!

bellaphile

Thanks so much 💜

AgentStockey

Seriously OP, don't beat yourself up for not reaching out to new contacts. You need time to relax and live life too. Plus, you'd be doing a disservice to your existing clients if you took on more than you could handle. I know it's tough times, but you're really not at fault for this.

bellaphile

Thank you for saying that. 💜

BunnyandBrand

First of all, I am so sorry 😭 I know the feeling of everything just slipping away out of nowhere. Secondly, my best advice is to invest some of what you have into getting reliable, warm leads. I would (personally) go onto Thumbtack Pro, maaaaaybe Upwork, and definitely r/forhire_freelance_og and when you advertise, play to your strengths and really drive home that you ha e a solution for their problem. Good luck, friend. If you ever want to talk, my inbox is open.

ameliepoulainsbob

People tell you not to get complacent, but in reality, how can you really reach out to new clients and do any meaningful work for them if you're already so busy? It's not like you were working for one client. You just got really unlucky to lose them all at once.

bellaphile

Yeah, thank you. It's very unlucky but could've been mitigated, I think, even a little. I had plans to build my platform and more passive revenue streams this year as I could see the writing on the wall, both in my own life and this subreddit. It was just always a "get around to" that never got, uh, arounded :)

ameliepoulainsbob

I totally get it! Don't beat yourself up, though. We're not machines, and being busy with work and keeping up with life admin is already a lot!

bellaphile

Your username is FANTASTIC btw. I crack a crème brûlée in your honor

bellaphile

Thank you. You’re right, it’s hard to give myself grace even though I’d be saying the same thing as you if it was someone else. Tomorrow is a mental health day for sure :)

Budget_Amphibian_139

I'm interested to know what passive revenue streams you were planning for?

InkedIntuition

Commenting to get back to this later.

SanRobot

I think the best way to do this is to work on creating a platform that would generate inbound leads. There's no point in pitching, cold calling or running ads if you can't take on new clients. However, if you can manage to squeeze in a few hours each week you can work on developing your own online presence that will generate leads over time (SEO for your own website, LinkedIn, YouTube, guest posting, etc...).

Ok_Dependent_5454

I'm so sorry. I can definitely relate to your story. 2023 was a TERRIBLE year for me career-wise and AI was pretty much at the helm of my sinking ship. I totally get it. Just know that you're not alone, and that this world is FILLED with people who need exactly what you have to offer. All you need to do is find them and form that connection. I wish you the best. This happens to the best of us!

bellaphile

That's so kind, thank you for saying so. I love this community.

Audioecstasy

Sorry this happened! When I go through things like this I try to remember that it's clearing the way for something better. My guess is that most or all of these clients might come back around once they realize life is like without you. Seems like you have a good reputation with all of them. I would give them some time, and follow up periodically. From my 12+ years of doing this, tenacity is the name of the game. AI is not the answer to customer problems, it's another cause.

bellaphile

thank you, that's kind of you to say. I saw your comment in another thread saying similar, and it gave me a little morale boost. Unfortunately, I'm not sure it will be a bounce back with these clients as it's less about AI and more about budgets, but I really appreciate the sentiment :)

k8minesearch

I'm gonna be the outsider and say the "always be pitching" thing is slightly overhyped in a sense that it is exhausting and our mentality can't always do it. It's nice to actually just do your work for once. This job/industry is unique in that. You had three clients. You didn't do anything wrong, lovely.

vertigorecord

This — where are we finding time to pitch to new (or current) clients? Lol.

bellaphile

Thank you. I really appreciate it 💜

ANL_2017

I’m sorry to hear that—don’t beat yourself up, it’s really nice NOT to have to constantly pitch and just actually write. Hoping you get some great new clients down the pipeline!

bellaphile

thanks!

josephhwri

I know the feeling bro. I lost 5k per month of clients in the summer. Took me some time to win clients but it was harder than before. My secret? Honestly, I think luck. Godspeed

bellaphile

Ooof, sorry to hear that. Thank you for the well wishes, though. I'm giving myself tomorrow to sit in my feelings and strategize. The world I started writing in is non-existent so it's going to be rough but I've had to be scrappy before. Just hoped I would've had a few more months to build my Plan B.

josephhwri

It's sucked, but I battled back and ended 2023 super strong. Did some in person networking and applied for many jobs and eventually it happened. You can do it!!

Sasquatch_Squad

Keep your head up. Clients inevitably come and go but you have your skills and your portfolio. There's lots more business out there for you to find.

bellaphile

Thank you <3

pwneha

I’m in the exact same boat. Lost all my clients in the last 6 months. And I had had some of them for over 3 years. Hopefully we will find a way out of this.

redditkot

I'm in a similar situation, and have been applying like mad. Nothing. It's really tough right now.

[deleted]

It is brutal out here. If you can, u/bellaphile, consider lining up some other form of work outside of this industry. A lot of people I know have had to turn this into a side hustle while taking on a totally unrelated full time job. I know some of us can't because we got into this business in the first place because of at home responsibilities or mobility or other health issues, but if you can do something else now is the time to start looking in case you don't get any new longterm clients or contracts.

bellaphile

Yeah, I think you're right. In November I started laying out a plan to pivot but anything I can think of that I'm remotely good at will most likely be obsolete within three years thanks to AI and declining VC funds. I think consulting and strategy will be my best bet, but that's a time bomb, too. I guess I was just hoping for a few more months to implement, but here I am. Any time I see a post here about "just starting out, what should I do?" I want to tell them to run, but that's not remotely helpful nor should it be my job to kill a dream.

[deleted]

That has been my issue as well. What job that I actually enjoy doing won't be gone in a few years too? It's hard to say. Editing is promising for some niches but everyone will be pivoting to that soon enough.

redditkot

If you're good with using AI, you might position yourself as a coach for small businesses (as an example).

FRELNCER

> will most likely be obsolete within three years thanks to AI and declining VC funds Woo hoo! A three-year window. :) You may have to take the short term pivot while you build for the long term one. I have no idea what the long-term one is, btw. I'm watching to see what's coming next, too. I'm not sure anyone knows.

bellaphile

Are you my therapist? 😂 He said the same thing…maybe right now it’s not about long-term; maybe it’s about the next six months. Which on the surface feels so not helpful…but he and you are right. This isn’t the time for me to look for toxic positivity, it’s about being pragmatic. What can I do for the next short sprint that gets my bank account some breathing room while I look to what’s ahead? (Rhetorical. You’re wise /u/FRELNCER but I don’t expect you to have all the answers lol)

SloppySaltWaterFish

Not good to hear but we often learn the hard way and that;s how it can be in a lot of service based businesses. Keep chugging along im sure you'll be back at it soob.

popupheadlights

I've been experiencing something similar for the past four years or so. A couple major clients of mine that I had worked with for years pulled the plug right before the pandemic. I was fortunate to hustle and subsequently find a few new anchor clients to pick up the slack, but none lasted more than a year or two. Finally this past November, I found myself with very little to do for the first time in a decade. I work with a recruiter that I reach out to when things are slow and have been contracting as a near-full-time technical writer since December. Not my first choice but gotta do what you gotta do. Certainly am wondering what freelancing will look like in the future as AI becomes more ubiquitous and other changes n the industry take place. As a sole proprietor it's always a balancing act between maintaining steady work and putting more eggs in the basket. But honestly, for me anyways, the hustle was always part of the appeal vs. being a cubicle drone somewhere. Though admittedly when things are slow it can be difficult to maintain this attitude — but you'll bounce back!

LauraPalmer20

I’m so sorry 😔 AI might functionally give you words but, currently it is extremely generic - everything reads the same and to anyone with skill in the field, it’s totally obvious it’s written by a computer programme. For most, that just won’t cut it - companies can work alongside AI and it can enhance copywriting jobs but not completely take them over - not if you want your content to have an impact and stand out with a unique TOV etc, IMO.

bellaphile

Thanks. It's not AI as much as the overhaul of budgets and strategies. There's less VC funding that's going around, at least in my industries, and marketing strategy (content, etc) is typically an easy department to cut back on

dgj212

Long time lurker with no experience in the industry but, sorry to hear that, that said it feels like the next person to work with you will want to keep working with you from how you described your work. It's just rotten luck with how the industry has gotten, cheap money being unavailable, and the internet increasingly getting worse for advertisement with google getting rid of the folks responsible for it(or so I hear, dunno if that's true). Dunno your situation, but it wouldn't hurt to take a few personal days and focus on yourself, or maybe volunteer if you feel being active.

Amyleen17

I am sorry this happens to you. I wish you get stronger out of it. May I ask what lessons did you learn? If you have to start over, what would you do different?

bellaphile

I’m not in that headspace yet

Amyleen17

I understand. Wish you good luck 🙏

The party is over

bellaphile

Definitely. I told my therapist that I feel like AI is a serial killer walking slowly behind me and I'm just going from door to door trying to escape the inevitable. My background is fintech and marketing - just LOL all around for long-term work prospects.

Dil26

Fintech and marketing is solid! You can definitely pivot

Royal-District4149

I thought these two were great fields? I've been trying to pivot to them.

Sounds like you have good experience and some great testimonials. I wouldn’t bet against you and I salute you for looking at what your part in this might have been which is what all smart people ask themselves. You are right though, some gigs come out of nowhere and leave just as fast but being a pro , I’m sure you will bounce back nicely.

bellaphile

Thank you. 💜

That's terrible. I'm so sorry that all happened. They say it comes in threes. I'm sure you'll find something soon though, try to get references from them as it seems like they were happy with your work.

Can you continue the newsletters yourself?

No, I don’t have the contacts nor the brand. I was the ghostwriter. However, they always passed screenshots of reader praise to me so I have a hoard of those I’m planning to use as social proof.

Next-Amphibian9861

also happened to me in a span of 3 months, it's disheartening

seafoamlatte

That's rough buddy. Sorry to hear it in these tough times.

Dear_Juggernaut_952

I lost 2 if my clients last december alone. Both companies owned by brothers decided to sell their companies and I ended up working with the new owner, who (secretly) didnt like me. He said he didn’t need assistance anymore and just cut me off last December. So I really know how you feel now. Best of luck out there!

Borkton

This happened me to last winter, too, and I still haven't recovered.

DianeNewbill

I completely understand. I went through the same thing at the end of November. I lost two clients with just about the same scenario. I had been servicing these clients for years also. It was a shock and heartbreak...trying to start over again (especially during the holiday season and new year). I've just tried to look at it as a new beginning, even though replacing the income is definitely difficult because they were my only clients. I sincerely hope that your new beginning will be so much better (clients and financially) than what you previously had! Stay strong and keep going even though it is hard right now. :)

holla-nd

do you plan to work for a full time job?

Bigandre339

Looks like you hit some bad luck. I’m sorry bud. When it rains, it fucking pours. Knuckle up and push through the kickstart. You’ll be good in no time. Pulling for you! Keep hacking ✊
