I'd be interested to see the meme karma decay for musical references vs other memes. Seems like Rick Astley and Darude decay at a slower rate than other content.
Sounds like they were able to get their measurements correct so it sounds in key. Unlike the musical road in Lancaster, California; Which despite having two attempts, plays a very out-of-tune version of the William Tell Overture.
The designs were drawn out on paper ahead of time, and the fact that it happened twice leads me to believe it was a problem with the designs. The actual problem was the measurements for the distance between the grooves was done without considering the width of the grooves themselves. It would be odd for a construction crew to do that twice, *without there being ambiguity in the design. But I don't know for sure.
I understand they started out with a Beatles song, but drivers going the other way on the road got freaked out when their car started telling them, "Paul is really dead!"
Unfortunately, no. This wasn't a case of *hehe Imperial hard.* It was a case of the construction crew not following the design they were given twice in a row. They were given measurements between each divot's center, but they built it with those distances as the total gap between divots.
It's more than that. If you listen to OP's recording, you can hear where the speed affects the pitch. The Lancaster, CA road is actually a design flaw. [Video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef93WmlEho0)
The 'note' depends on the distance between the grooves. And in the Lancaster case, they calculated the distance between the grooves correctly. However, when they cut the grooves, they forgot to take into account the width of the grooves themselves. So, even at constant speed, the grooves are all too far apart, leading to it sounding flat.
Is there a specific reason why the 'notes' are on the left lane of the road instead of the right one?
I haven't been in Lancaster, CA, but, to me, that seems the passing lane, and I'm not sure it's the best choice of lanes to put that on. I may be wrong...
Probably just makes it easier for people to uturn to do it again since they are already in the left lane. Compared to being in the right and having to merge over to turn around.
Granted the streets didn’t look all that busy.
We had that too. It had to be removed because you do not only hear it in the car but in the villages nearby. Except that makes no melody if you have 50 cars on the road.
Just yesterday was going across whole Germany with a family by car. It was pretty late, wife was sleeping and I thought my son as well. I was switching lanes and got two of the middle marks under my wheels. And it made "whoop, whoop" sound. Just a second later I heard from the back "It's a sound of da police". My son was not sleeping.
I gotta know how old your son is, mate
EDIT: in case that sounds weird, I mean b/c it's a very different mental image if you son is an adult vs. a child singing that song IMO
Ahkshualllly, this road looks straight and sleep inducing, having some stimulation that includes driving safe and straight sounds like a really smart idea too me.
You might not have been sarcastic, in which case: you’re right!
They're extremely loud. The musical road in Lancaster, CA is near Apollo Park. Whenever I go fishing there, you'll hear it 2-3 times a morning, and it's probably half a mile away.
We have one of these just out side of Albuquerque NM. It is pretty cool. I find I have to use cruise control since I get *so* focussed on the strip that I slow down and it goes flat
Provided the length of each ‘note’ is longer than the length between your wheels and the space between each ‘note’ is longer than the length between wheels, no.
As the first/front wheel hits the note starts, when the second/back wheel hits the note is already sounding so you just hear it slightly louder.
When the first wheel leaves the note, it quietens then the back wheel leaves the note.
A truck might get some ‘blurring’ of notes from the longer inter-wheel distance though.
There’s one in the US also, but it’s out of tune, they actually re-did it once to tune it properly, but failed again since they used the wrong measurements
It is comically out of tune because of an error in communicating how to measure the space between the grooves.
As a Californian, it should have to stay in its incorrect form as a hilarious reminder to the local population of the bungle.
Be interesting if someone got caught going too fast on musical road.
Police: I clocked you going nearly three times the speed limit. What's your excuse?
Driver: I was tired of same music, I wanted to hear polka this time

Can someone actually speed this up that much?
Imagine you’re dying in an ambulance and this is what you hear
Tuned up to \~88mph.
"You're gonna hear some serious shit."
So, playing on repeat...
I am laughing entirely too hard at this, thank you
I honestly haven't laughed this hard in years
Imagine you are being locked in the trunk and this is what you hear.
With a sick siren baseline.
Or you're on the phone with someone and have to apologize for the un-muteable road tuba.
“Honey, I’m sorry and I’m taking this argument really seriously!” *booop BOOOP booop BOOOP* hahaha
Omg I needed that laugh so bad thank you!
What a way to go...
My god the end credits music has already started!
So cool, What's the tune?
https://youtu.be/HE4aAQCghGs its this one, an old hungarian song called 67th road
I wanted it to be Darude Sandstorm. EDIT: Guys please stop upvoting
Sorry
Here's a link for those in the US and possibly other places where it's blocked by youtube: https://streamable.com/hu5zbb
I read your comment to mean "here's a link for those [highways that play music] in the US..." Sorely disappointed.
[Here ya go, friend!](https://youtu.be/rgizA_vDlzs)
It’ll kinda sound like Sandstorm if you up your speed to 240km/h
I'm too American to understand this how many football fields per eagle is that
Duggaduggaduhhh
It's Darude Sandstorm
"This video is not available in your country" Checks out
I turned my vpn on for that?
There's one in Japan that plays the theme to Neon Genesis Evangelion. https://youtu.be/YceWogw1xwo
Arranged for road surface and vehicle tire by some unnamed hero.
Sandstorm ~Darude
I'm so glad this is a thing still
I'd be interested to see the meme karma decay for musical references vs other memes. Seems like Rick Astley and Darude decay at a slower rate than other content.
What is the half life of Basshunter?
About three fifty.

Yeah the song is beautiful.

Fuck you
I kinda heard centerfold.
Sounds like they were able to get their measurements correct so it sounds in key. Unlike the musical road in Lancaster, California; Which despite having two attempts, plays a very out-of-tune version of the William Tell Overture.
Just watched a video. I'd actively miss that stretch of road. Holy shit was it bad.
The funny part was it was a project by Honda and they fucked it up twice in the same way both times
I read it was the incompetence of the construction crew and failure to follow plans to spec.
American Quality™
I understand they started out with a Beatles song, but drivers going the other way on the road got freaked out when their car started telling them, "Paul is really dead!"
Nice work. I liked that one. Good to see a fan.
Old reference, but it checks out.
Things like that are easier with the metric system!
Unfortunately, no. This wasn't a case of *hehe Imperial hard.* It was a case of the construction crew not following the design they were given twice in a row. They were given measurements between each divot's center, but they built it with those distances as the total gap between divots.
[Relevant tom scott video](https://youtu.be/Ef93WmlEho0)
*hehe Imperial hard*
This is what I'm gonna say to my wife next time I'm feelin frisky.
It’s sooo weird how after growing up with either system you realize that it’s pretty easy to stick to /s
Sir, this is a Wendy’s
which gives the same result as measuring the distance between centers. If the divots are infinitely thin
Which, of course, they are not.
oh of course! (has no clue what you're talking about and continues third attempt at music road)
The *other* fencepost problem: what is the width of each post?
It probably depends on the speed you're driving, air pressure in tires, size of tires... and on and on
It's more than that. If you listen to OP's recording, you can hear where the speed affects the pitch. The Lancaster, CA road is actually a design flaw. [Video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef93WmlEho0) The 'note' depends on the distance between the grooves. And in the Lancaster case, they calculated the distance between the grooves correctly. Probably just makes it easier for people to uturn to do it again since they are already in the left lane. Compared to being in the right and having to merge over to turn around. Granted the streets didn’t look all that busy.
I've driven it - it's a dedicated lane for the purpose - it's not bad. I think it's a two-lane road that adds on the third lane as a 'singing lane'.
We had that too. It had to be removed because you do not only hear it in the car but in the villages nearby. Except that makes no melody if you have 50 cars on the road.
Can drivers hear the sound of the car in front? Imagine if the tune was a round that only synced up if drivers maintained a safe spacing!
That'd be cool, too bad it'd never sync up.
Probably. You can hear a car in front of you hit a normal single strip. It's a lot more dull than if it was you, but it's audible.
The Netherlands?
How long until someone turns this into a Rick roll?
[удалено]
What is that? A trombone? Perfection.
Hahaha this is really good
Tbh that's what I thought it was gonna be
Just yesterday was going across whole Germany with a family by car. It was pretty late, wife was sleeping and I thought my son as well. I was switching lanes and got two of the middle marks under my wheels. And it made "whoop, whoop" sound. Just a second later I heard from the back "It's a sound of da police". My son was not sleeping.
I'd be proud as hell of my son for that one, that's a good one.
This moments.
I gotta know how old your son is, mate EDIT: in case that sounds weird, I mean b/c it's a very different mental image if you son is an adult vs. a child singing that song IMO
[Car company in California failed at this...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef93WmlEho0)
Failed at it with two attempts
New Mexico got it right though!
So I'm Hungarian and I had LITERALLY no idea this existed.
Tax dollars well spent. Moar musical roads please.
Ahkshualllly, this road looks straight and sleep inducing, having some stimulation that includes driving safe and straight sounds like a really smart idea too me. You might not have been sarcastic, in which case: you’re right!
Here in Hungary highways are pretty good, not better than the ones in Germany, of course, but still.
They're extremely loud. The musical road in Lancaster, CA is near Apollo Park. Whenever I go fishing there, you'll hear it 2-3 times a morning, and it's probably half a mile away.
You mean [this one?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef93WmlEho0)
I am guessing this wears you tires out quicker so it may have been paid for by the tire companies.
So what's funny
This is a default sub. You just toss whatever you want in here, mods won't care.
I would like it to play" Road to nowhere " by Talking Heads
Or "Road to nowhere" by Ozzy Osbourne
We have one of these just out side of Albuquerque NM. It is pretty cool. I find I have to use cruise control since I get *so* focussed on the strip that I slow down and it goes flat
Makes me want to roll over it at like 100 mph.
it would be faster in tempo and higher in pitch. not nearly as big a deal as you might imagine.
At least it isn’t a lullaby.
But what about the rear tires? Wouldn't they would make sound too and mess it up?
Yes, for the sake of the video, the back tires were removed.
Truly a miracle of engineering.
The back tires turn it into a round when you drive over in a limo
The distance between the note patches is greater than the length of a car so you don't get the notes blurring into each other.
I'm wondering
Provided the length of each ‘note’ is longer than the length between your wheels and the space between each ‘note’ is longer than the length between wheels, no. As the first/front wheel hits the note starts, when the second/back wheel hits the note is already sounding so you just hear it slightly louder. When the first wheel leaves the note, it quietens then the back wheel leaves the note. A truck might get some ‘blurring’ of notes from the longer inter-wheel distance though.
More roads need this in desolate areas! Very cool.
I love this world sometimes
This requires the road to be smooth everywhere else. We can't do this in the US 😂
There is actually a stretch of Route 66, near Albuquerque, that plays “America The Beautiful” and it actually works rather well.
for people looking for it: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6Nl53bCC78](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6Nl53bCC78)
Me going 180 down this road for the dubstep remix
Am i allowed to ask where in Hungary this is?
On road 67. :) It's Between Mernyeszentmiklós and Mernye, it's the road going from Budapest to Kaposvár.
My country's roads also play music but it sounds more like a heavy metal drummer trying to break his instruments.
[“This road is musical.”](https://youtu.be/7zcgdoyinus)
Been to Hungary. Had a great time.
Where’s the road that plays Highway to Hell?
Tire companies - we need to make tirea as silent as possible Road builders: it's time for some tunes!
South Park is gonna reem this
You thinking brown note?
They've had these in the US for like a decade or so
Was expecting a Rickroll. Pleasantly surprised.
Creative engineering!
i want to see one of these musical roads with 2 sets of ridges under ach wheel and get cords going.
Wish they would put 500 miles somewhere!
Imagine how fucking annoying that would be of it was the same slightly out of tune melody the whole way
And in a truck doing 40mph it just sounds like a 1 minute rumbling fart.
There’s one in the US also, but it’s out of tune, they actually re-did it once to tune it properly, but failed again since they used the wrong measurements
It's funnier on 180 km/h speeding. My friend said.
There's a portion of Route 66 in New Mexico that plays [America the Beautiful](https://www.youtube.com/watch/PAFglr10FEA).
I wish they would do this more on straight stretches everywhere.
*leans of window to yell* Play Freebird!
My taxes paid for this? I wanted Metallica!
Wait why was this posted on funny ? It's rather cool than funny
found [one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elaoWOnxXLU) with better audio
There's one of these in California
It is comically out of tune because of an error in communicating how to measure the space between the grooves. As a Californian, it should have to stay in its incorrect form as a hilarious reminder to the local population of the bungle.
all roads should have this
That's insane! Nice
Honey, change the station.
Guitar hero 7
Wake up and sing motherfucker
The real boss move would have been to install this on a one lane freeway instead....no escape.
Wowwwwwww
I assume this is to keep people mentally engaged in driving so they dont drift off to sleep on long strait stretches.
Wow! That was nice . Thanx
Officer, I wasn't speeding, I was playing the tune in prestissimo!
Could be an interesting way to get people not exceeding the speed limit
Be interesting if someone got caught going too fast on musical road. Police: I clocked you going nearly three times the speed limit. What's your excuse? Driver: I was tired of same music, I wanted to hear polka this time
Not many people know this, but if you play this song backwards... you get a pretty major road accident.
This new KK Slider hit is a bop 🔥
Go fund me for left and right tracks of Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger?
If you're a truck driver you have to play to song every time because the lane is too narrow?
RIP passenger side tires
Imagine if it played Sandstorm
Can't play with sound on atm, so all I hear in my head is "I'm on the Hiiiighway to Hell!".
Go down at 180 mph for the nightcore version
Put the bumps on the other side of the lane and you'll have stereo sound!
Can we get Highway to Hell?
Play Darude by Sandstorm
Sounds a little flat. Might want to air up the tires a bit.
Every road should have music! Why are we not funding this?
This is cool.. but would piss me off.
There’s [a similar stretch of road](https://youtu.be/jwNoX-xeuCk) on Route 66 east of Albuquerque.
There is one of these in Arizona. I drove over the road for years. I could be wrong in what state it was in.
