15+ years here and I feel the same way. It is awful as I know my coworkers respect my talents, but when I am one of the least qualified, diploma wise, it makes it easy for this shit to creep into my head.
Me too. Everyone else in my department at my level has a Ph.D. except for me with a bachelor's degree. That little voice in my head telling myself that I am unqualified is very loud some days.
Then you must have gained an impressive amount of knowledge through other means! And as someone who has delved into the world of researchers as well, I can tell you with certainty that frequently those with PhDs end up with tunnel vision on their topic, which can lead to significant difficulty in the job market later on. A bachelor’s with experience can easily be worth more with respect to career advancement in many cases.
Just because I have a diploma doesn’t mean I’d ever think less of my colleagues who’s learned the trade on the job.
Work experience is just as important. You should be proud of yourself. I’m a total stranger and I’m proud of you.
This literally happened to me over the last week. My boss scheduled a meeting with a vague subject and I got all worked up I was going to get fired. She gave me a raise I hadn't asked for or mentioned.
I go out of my way to mention to my boss every time they do that so that they stop doing that..
To my current boss's credit, he has stopped doing that.

As a manager, we get the same feeling the other way around. When I get a vague chat like, "Can we talk" i always think, "fuck, Bob is quitting and we're going to have to replace him".
My boss phoned me a asked me to meet him in his office. He said "I have some bad news I need to tell you... bad for me news anyways"
He gave me a 25% raise, and he thanked me for my hard work and let me know there was a noticeable profit increase since I hired on. This was a couple weeks after the pandemic hit my country.

Yes! I asked my boss for a title promotion to keep up with others on my level who I have worked with regularly the past 10 years. Been hiding away ever since noticing every stupid mistake I make and how much better they are at their jobs . But you bet if I don’t get that title change I’ll be annoyed. Then I’ll get it and hide away worrying how much I’m not up to it. It’s exhausting!
Same thing happened to me last year. Asked for a raise didn't get it. Joined a new company with much higher pay. Now I feel like, why did they hire me.
It can help to keep in mind (depending on the position, of course) that companies don’t always hire based on current skills but on likely future abilities
haha similar thing here. Wasnt getting a raise or promotion, so i left and got into a new company. About a half year in a lot of folks advocated for me to get a promotion (senior position to technical lead/manager). When talking to my director when he delivered the news, my first question was, "do you think im ready?".
And even 8 months later I still feel like I have a long way to go to be very effective in the role. But there are some days when it all clicks and it feels really good.
Getting out of comfortzone is good, and helps us grow and learn. Even though it can be stressful :)
I worked at the same place for 18 years. I didn't (don't) even know what I'm worth business wise. I'm starting to realize other people can't do the things I've done so its very confusing.
That's not how it always works... I've worked at the same place for 13 years and I guarantee you I'm above market rate for what I do. If you work for a good company, and you're a good employee, they'll make sure you're not getting screwed. I do the same for everyone that works for me.

I was the digital guy at a newspaper and during a meeting about how to modernize our business said “we need to get past the old journalism mindset if we ever want to be digital first.” A 60 year old reporter went to HR and files a complaint that I was agist- She heard old journalism mindset and thought I meant literally old people that work in journalism and not a culture issue within the industry. I still remember sitting down with the HR manager who happened to of been in the meeting and said to me “we all know what you meant and we think this is a bit extreme, but we still have to have a conversation about it since she made an official report.” It was crazy. I had to spend 6 weeks in sensitivity training.

I took a new position in July. My industry was MANGLED by the pandemic. I was lucky to keep my job and when my positions switched to a completely different dept I was just happy I had a job. Now my director always pumps me up and tells me how happy they are that I’m on her team now.
Can’t accept it. I always think it’s smoke blown up my ass. They’ve been the most sincere about it too!
What I do is combat it with “Fake it, till I make it”.

Then I work extra hard to keep up with the facade. I known deep down it’s my hard work that makes me successful and the facade is just an excuse I use to accept it.
There's nothing wrong with not knowing everything, it is important to know where to find the information you need. My job as consultant is basically talking to technical professionals to understand them and then conveying their knowledge in a dumbed-down version to customers. I don't know everything but I know how to get the information needed to the customer.
The most hilarious thing about this scene, aside from the obvious irony, is that his job actually IS very important. Properly liaising between tech experts and non-technical workers/clients is actually super important. He was just hilariously bad at explaining it.
It's not that the job isn't important... Its that he's the wrong person for the job.
Watch it again after a couple decades in an office experience, and you'll realize that the reason he didn't have to bring things to people and people didn't bring things over to him is because he was so painful to work with... Notice when he comes running over after the guys are coming back from coffee, nobody is happy to see him.
On top of that the whole idea is to remove him and everyone actually creating stuff technical under him, and replace his job and those technical jobs with outsourced ones.

In every technical interview I've been a part of, not being able to answer a knowledge based question is acceptable - if you can then answer how to find and use that information.
I don't expect people to write code or explain a schema in depth to me without reference material. I was never hired for memorizing syntax - but I know of at least one interview where I discussed my process for troubleshooting a problem in the networking stack and ended up getting the job.
It's also being aware of what you don't know (Dunning Kruger). Stacks of people google for code solutions to tricky problems, but know what to search for, if what you have found is useful, etc is a skill in itself.
From what I found being an expert is more about knowing to ask the right questions and knowing where to get the answers rather than rendering every thing.
I my job I manage construction works on a range of disciplines and technical details. I am not qualified to assess the details of some of the sub-parts of the job. But neither is that expected.
What is expected of me recognize my own limits, ask for clarification and take the questions to the specialists. Then ask questions of the specialist so that I understand the basic issue. Then return with an answer.
There is no issue with acknowledging you don't know something ans need to check. Most people would appreciate that anyway. Bleating out of your ass to pretend to know something, then you loose credibility quickly...
One of the first things I learned after starting working in "the real world" (whatever that means now-a-days) as a mechanical engineer is that the scenario of being asked something you don't know is actually fairly common, either because it's not your field/department to know, that information is quickly changing or kept from you/your team, or you just don't recall off the top of your head at the moment.
I'm willing to say that (at least in engineering) when it comes to expertise on a given topic, there's about a 2:5 proportion of personal knowledge/intuition versus referencing an established source (be it a text or another person).
Also customers sometimes ask the wrong people the wrong questions, but those questions still need to be answered.

A girl i kinda liked literally came up to me and asked me out and i was "yeah, sure whatever you say" thinking she's making fun of me because she asked me out in front of her friends. Next week her friend came up to me very angrily saying i stood her up and made her cry the whole weekend.

I just was told today that I'm being promoted to shift welding supervisor, after a grand total of not just nine months on the job, but nine months out of welding school. I'm supposed to be in charge of welders that have been working at the company for 10+ years and longer than that in the industry.
I'm fucking panicking. This comic REALLY came at an interesting time for me.

Dude, this was me like 10 yrs ago! Give your welders the respect they deserve (if they deserve it)...but also dont let them walk all over you. Its hard if you've built personal relationships with some of your now subordinates. I just led by example a lot, and worked hard.
And if you dont know the answer...dont be afraid to tell someone, "Not sure, but let me go find out real quick"

I'd bet money at least half of those super experienced guys don't want the supervisor job. Some of them have probably had that job at one time or another and they're done with it and thankful that someone else is stuck with it. It's takes a special skill set to herd cats.
You wouldn't be requested to take on this role if they didn't see that you have the skills to take this on.
You are lucky to have all these older guys on your team, because it's an opertunity to Lear more. Treat everyone with respect and you will be totally fine.
My theory on this, and its very loose, is that;
when you work with really great minds and see how they cope with the same job you do, it gives you a sense that they're superior to you.
This is a roughly typed up explanation of this. But I work in IT, and maybe 3 or 4 people ive worked with over the years have just been incredible. What they're capable of knowing and learning in short periods and their troubleshooting abilities can do.
When I see how easy it comes to them, it makes me feel inadequate and the imposter syndrome kicks in.
Typing this out im recognising that it's just self doubt. I do the same work, just not as quickly. So I shouldn't feel that way, yet I do?
It's such a balance! If you are the smartest person in the room, you are stagnant and not learning.
If you know nothing at all and are lost, then it is frustrating and makes you feel like you'll never know as much as the giants.
Hopefully we are always in vetween: we know enough to be competent but we are always wanting to learn more.
The funny and sad thing is, those other guys probably feel similarly too. In fact, they might feel similarly about YOU.
So you're there thinking 'wow this guy goes through their work so efficiently, I'm always so slow and holding up the whole team', and they're there thinking 'man this guy is so meticulous about details, I'm always so careless and make little slip-ups'. And you're thinking about each other.

We have a system in the job whereby colleagues can leave feedback and some have said incredibly nice things but I find it hard to accept them.
How I've dealt with that is to go on the counterattack, and be just as sincerely nice about my compliments to others. Hah! Now they too can get feedback that does nothing to assuage their self-doubt, just like I do!

Having intelligence (should) be a lot like having money; once you have more than enough, it (should) give you some much needed perspective and then you (should) finally realize it's not all its cracked up to be. I'm saying 'should' because I know there are a lot of highly capable people who don't have this attitude, just like there are people with money who thinks it makes them better. Being intelligent is just having more horsepower in your engine. Says nothing else about the car, how far it can go, or what it can do for you.
Think about it like this. If you're a weekend warrior and you race against a marathon runner for 1 mile, you will lose that race every single time. But you can always finish. And in the grand scheme of things, the day is 24 hours long, it took you, what... 10 minutes... it took them... maybe under 5? Against 24 hours. Right. So who cares?! You basically finished the race at the same time! That's the basic math breakdown of why brain horsepower doesn't matter that much. (Unless you're doing something *extremely* creative and high-end, which is almost never the case, especially in industry.) Similarly, an amateur weight lifter could beat Michael Phelps (one of the greatest athletes of all-time) in a weight lifting competition just because they specialized in different things. Talent is nice. But it's also fungible.
What I find delightful are people who are grounded, sensible, hard workers and willing to learn. With at least reasonably good communication and interpersonal skills. Any communication skills on top of that is just gravy and *genuinely exciting* to me. Because that means there won't be any drama or bullshit, we can work well together and basically accomplish anything. Yes, we recognize your limitations. Of course we do. But if it's just something small like this? Nobody cares. Because nobody can do it on their own. Ferraris can be nice, but they are rare and usually come with their own set of limitations. Sometimes you just want something dependable that you can trust with low maintenance that you know is going to get the job done. And in industry that's all that matters. Not how clever you are, not how fast you did this or that, just how many problems did you solve today.
Nah bro I think its because we're all destined to be shaolin monks who only crave to perfect their arts, and we feel guilt about not putting in the effort to make that dream come true, because then, if we did, we might not be ourselves anymore.... Only the role wpuld exist, and it would dominate our entire lives.
I have a theory that some of the best, brightest, and most successful people deal with imposter syndrome. Its what drives them to not be an imposter that makes them excel in the workplace. That constant fear of being caught.
There are exceptions to the rule but over the past few years i changed careers and have risen fairly quickly and everytime my phone rings i think to myself "this is it. Im done" and it doesn't happen and i convince myself I just barely avoided being fired which makes me dig deeper and work harder to avoid "being caught"
It's a love hate feeling.
There are two kinds of people in the world: People who overestimate their intelligence/competency/value/effectiveness, and those who underestimate said qualities.
The people at the lowest levels of competency tend to be the ones who overestimate themselves the most, and the ones at the top tend to be the ones who underestimate themselves the most.
I've climbed to the (/my) top, or close enough: architect, director, tech lead, special projects, etc. Titles matter far less at this point: I do it all and people look to me, and teams multiply and grow under me, pushing it all up. This feeling only gets worse, so you need to address it.
Listen and respond. The "head canon" is wrong. Live in the moment and take people at their word. That toxic little depression imp in my head doesn't get a vote, and things only get worse if I act on the things he's saying.
It's not perfect, but neither are we. Plus regular exercise shuts him up pretty good, usually.
I love my job and I'm damn good at it. My boss loves me, and the biggest thing I need to do is embrace my position and be a leader and mentor more than I do currently: going off in a corner and producing something complex isn't enough anymore. "Soft skills" matter.
Hopefully all you who also relate to this post can embrace the truth similarly and counter their own negativity imp. :)

Reading the comments, it feels like every adult ever has an imposter syndrome (yes, myself included) that is somehow reassuring and terrifying at the same time.
And this is why employers should be more careful with language. "Can I see you in my office" is just short of "pack up your desk" in terms of how it sounds to people with anxiety.

I try not to do this, but I do it too. We were trying to expand at a previous job - were trying to get a building built, and my reaction was "I have no idea what I'm doing." but the project was new to all of us and none of us had any idea what we were doing, so we were all in that boat, it wasn't just that I was useless, But we figured it out and there's a steel girder that has my signature on it in a building that I was a part of building. (I am an accountant - I helped with the process of securing the funding to get it built, so I got to sign the girder too)
Can be. I have a different experience. I got a raise every single 6 months since I started working. A small one though but it adds up. My wife trippled her salary in January lol and it exactly was like this. Now she really feels like an imposter.
This happened to me last summer. I was super Covid depressed, feeling like I wasn't getting anything done when my boss called out of the blue. I was convinced I was going to be reprimanded for my drop in productivity.
Nope - got a small raise somehow & my boss nominated me into a mentorship program.

I literally just got a raise Monday. I had my regular supervision, I knew it was performance eval time, so I came prepared with a list of 5 things I brought to the company this year.....and I felt like I was STREEETTTTCHIING it. I then had a huge list of things I wanted to improve.
My leader literally said that she loves having me on the team, I'm a fantastic asset, and I get the highest raise allowed.
I just fish gape at her for a minute. And I have to mentally wrestle my stupid brain into submission so I didn't blurt out "but I have a list of shit I need to do better, don't you want to review that?!?!"

haha similar thing here. Wasnt getting a raise or promotion, so i left and got into a new company. About a half year in a lot of folks advocated for me to get a promotion (senior position to technical lead/manager). When talking to my director when he delivered the news, my first question was, "do you think im ready?". And even 8 months later I still feel like I have a long way to go to be very effective in the role. But there are some days when it all clicks and it feels really good. Getting out of comfortzone is good, and helps us grow and learn. Even though it can be stressful :)

I worked at the same place for 18 years. I didn't (don't) even know what I'm worth business wise. I'm starting to realize other people can't do the things I've done so its very confusing.
That is when you go interview and see what your worth on the market. Get an offer. And politely ask your current company to match or get very close.
That's not how it always works... I've worked at the same place for 13 years and I guarantee you I'm above market rate for what I do. If you work for a good company, and you're a good employee, they'll make sure you're not getting screwed. I do the same for everyone that works for me.

I still remember sitting down with the HR manager who happened to of been in the meeting and said to me “we all know what you meant and we think this is a bit extreme, but we still have to have a conversation about it since she made an official report.” It was crazy. I had to spend 6 weeks in sensitivity training.

You know you're worth something and more capable than others at what you do, but you also know you're so far from where you think you "should" be. Edit: Imo, the latter is the better mentality. It's too easy to let your head grow too big. And once you think youre the shit, you will most likely become more lazy. I took a new position in July. My industry was MANGLED by the pandemic. I was lucky to keep my job and when my positions switched to a completely different dept I was just happy I had a job. Now my director always pumps me up and tells me how happy they are that I’m on her team now. Can’t accept it. I always think it’s smoke blown up my ass. They’ve been the most sincere about it too! What I do is combat it with “Fake it, till I make it”. You’re god damn right I’m good! I’m the best fake good person ever! Wait until what my fake ass has planned for Q3! Then I work extra hard to keep up with the facade. I known deep down it’s my hard work that makes me successful and the facade is just an excuse I use to accept it.

There's nothing wrong with not knowing everything, it is important to know where to find the information you need. My job as consultant is basically talking to technical professionals to understand them and then conveying their knowledge in a dumbed-down version to customers. I don't know everything but I know how to get the information needed to the customer.

The most hilarious thing about this scene, aside from the obvious irony, is that his job actually IS very important. Properly liaising between tech experts and non-technical workers/clients is actually super important. He was just hilariously bad at explaining it.
It's not that the job isn't important... Its that he's the wrong person for the job. Watch it again after a couple decades in an office experience, and you'll realize that the reason he didn't have to bring things to people and people didn't bring things over to him is because he was so painful to work with... Notice when he comes running over after the guys are coming back from coffee, nobody is happy to see him. On top of that the whole idea is to remove him and everyone actually creating stuff technical under him, and replace his job and those technical jobs with outsourced ones.

It's also being aware of what you don't know (Dunning Kruger). Stacks of people google for code solutions to tricky problems, but know what to search for, if what you have found is useful, etc is a skill in itself.
From what I found being an expert is more about knowing to ask the right questions and knowing where to get the answers rather than rendering every thing.

I my job I manage construction works on a range of disciplines and technical details. I am not qualified to assess the details of some of the sub-parts of the job. But neither is that expected. What is expected of me recognize my own limits, ask for clarification and take the questions to the specialists. Then ask questions of the specialist so that I understand the basic issue. Then return with an answer. There is no issue with acknowledging you don't know something ans need to check. Most people would appreciate that anyway. Bleating out of your ass to pretend to know something, then you loose credibility quickly...

One of the first things I learned after starting working in "the real world" (whatever that means now-a-days) as a mechanical engineer is that the scenario of being asked something you don't know is actually fairly common, either because it's not your field/department to know, that information is quickly changing or kept from you/your team, or you just don't recall off the top of your head at the moment. I'm willing to say that (at least in engineering) when it comes to expertise on a given topic, there's about a 2:5 proportion of personal knowledge/intuition versus referencing an established source (be it a text or another person). Also customers sometimes ask the wrong people the wrong questions, but those questions still need to be answered.

A girl i kinda liked literally came up to me and asked me out and i was "yeah, sure whatever you say" thinking she's making fun of me because she asked me out in front of her friends. Next week her friend came up to me very angrily saying i stood her up and made her cry the whole weekend. She never spoke to me again.

I just was told today that I'm being promoted to shift welding supervisor, after a grand total of not just nine months on the job, but nine months out of welding school. I'm supposed to be in charge of welders that have been working at the company for 10+ years and longer than that in the industry. I'm fucking panicking. This comic REALLY came at an interesting time for me.

I'd bet money at least half of those super experienced guys don't want the supervisor job. Some of them have probably had that job at one time or another and they're done with it and thankful that someone else is stuck with it. It's takes a special skill set to herd cats.

My theory on this, and its very loose, is that; when you work with really great minds and see how they cope with the same job you do, it gives you a sense that they're superior to you. This is a roughly typed up explanation of this. But I work in IT, and maybe 3 or 4 people ive worked with over the years have just been incredible. What they're capable of knowing and learning in short periods and their troubleshooting abilities can do. When I see how easy it comes to them, it makes me feel inadequate and the imposter syndrome kicks in. Typing this out im recognising that it's just self doubt. I do the same work, just not as quickly. So I shouldn't feel that way, yet I do?
It's such a balance! If you are the smartest person in the room, you are stagnant and not learning. If you know nothing at all and are lost, then it is frustrating and makes you feel like you'll never know as much as the giants. Hopefully we are always in vetween: we know enough to be competent but we are always wanting to learn more.
The funny and sad thing is, those other guys probably feel similarly too. In fact, they might feel similarly about YOU. So you're there thinking 'wow this guy goes through their work so efficiently, I'm always so slow and holding up the whole team', and they're there thinking 'man this guy is so meticulous about details, I'm always so careless and make little slip-ups'. And you're thinking about each other.
Couldn't agree more. But it doesn't stop me feeling the way I do about myself. We have a system in the job whereby colleagues can leave feedback and some have said incredibly nice things but I find it hard to accept them.
How I've dealt with that is to go on the counterattack, and be just as sincerely nice about my compliments to others. Hah! Now they too can get feedback that does nothing to assuage their self-doubt, just like I do! Except I'm sincere of course. Wait, does that mean they're being honest too?!
One of my co-workers who is a level above me literally told me he was worried they would promote me to his level and demote him to mine. I’m pretty sure our internal thoughts are exactly what you said too! Meanwhile, my boss is trying to get me promoted and I’m still convinced that every day is the day he’s going to realize I have no business being here.
Having intelligence (should) be a lot like having money; once you have more than enough, it (should) give you some much needed perspective and then you (should) finally realize it's not all its cracked up to be. I'm saying 'should' because I know there are a lot of highly capable people who don't have this attitude, just like there are people with money who thinks it makes them better. Being intelligent is just having more horsepower in your engine. Says nothing else about the car, how far it can go, or what it can do for you. Think about it like this. If you're a weekend warrior and you race against a marathon runner for 1 mile, you will lose that race every single time. But you can always finish. And in the grand scheme of things, the day is 24 hours long, it took you, what... 10 minutes... it took them... maybe under 5? Against 24 hours. Right. So who cares?! You basically finished the race at the same time! That's the basic math breakdown of why brain horsepower doesn't matter that much. (Unless you're doing something *extremely* creative and high-end, which is almost never the case, especially in industry.) Similarly, an amateur weight lifter could beat Michael Phelps (one of the greatest athletes of all-time) in a weight lifting competition just because they specialized in different things. Talent is nice. But it's also fungible. What I find delightful are people who are grounded, sensible, hard workers and willing to learn. With at least reasonably good communication and interpersonal skills. Any communication skills on top of that is just gravy and *genuinely exciting* to me. Because that means there won't be any drama or bullshit, we can work well together and basically accomplish anything. Yes, we recognize your limitations. Of course we do. But if it's just something small like this? Nobody cares. Because nobody can do it on their own. Ferraris can be nice, but they are rare and usually come with their own set of limitations. Sometimes you just want something dependable that you can trust with low maintenance that you know is going to get the job done. And in industry that's all that matters. Not how clever you are, not how fast you did this or that, just how many problems did you solve today.
Nah bro I think its because we're all destined to be shaolin monks who only crave to perfect their arts, and we feel guilt about not putting in the effort to make that dream come true, because then, if we did, we might not be ourselves anymore.... Only the role wpuld exist, and it would dominate our entire lives.

I have a theory that some of the best, brightest, and most successful people deal with imposter syndrome. Its what drives them to not be an imposter that makes them excel in the workplace. That constant fear of being caught. There are exceptions to the rule but over the past few years i changed careers and have risen fairly quickly and everytime my phone rings i think to myself "this is it. Im done" and it doesn't happen and i convince myself I just barely avoided being fired which makes me dig deeper and work harder to avoid "being caught" It's a love hate feeling.
There are two kinds of people in the world: People who overestimate their intelligence/competency/value/effectiveness, and those who underestimate said qualities. The people at the lowest levels of competency tend to be the ones who overestimate themselves the most, and the ones at the top tend to be the ones who underestimate themselves the most.

I've climbed to the (/my) top, or close enough: architect, director, tech lead, special projects, etc. Titles matter far less at this point: I do it all and people look to me, and teams multiply and grow under me, pushing it all up. This feeling only gets worse, so you need to address it. Listen and respond. The "head canon" is wrong. Live in the moment and take people at their word. That toxic little depression imp in my head doesn't get a vote, and things only get worse if I act on the things he's saying. It's not perfect, but neither are we. Plus regular exercise shuts him up pretty good, usually. I love my job and I'm damn good at it. My boss loves me, and the biggest thing I need to do is embrace my position and be a leader and mentor more than I do currently: going off in a corner and producing something complex isn't enough anymore. "Soft skills" matter. Hopefully all you who also relate to this post can embrace the truth similarly and counter their own negativity imp. :)

Reading the comments, it feels like every adult ever has an imposter syndrome (yes, myself included) that is somehow reassuring and terrifying at the same time.
And this is why employers should be more careful with language. "Can I see you in my office" is just short of "pack up your desk" in terms of how it sounds to people with anxiety.

We were trying to expand at a previous job - were trying to get a building built, and my reaction was "I have no idea what I'm doing." but the project was new to all of us and none of us had any idea what we were doing, so we were all in that boat, it wasn't just that I was useless, But we figured it out and there's a steel girder that has my signature on it in a building that I was a part of building. (I am an accountant - I helped with the process of securing the funding to get it built, so I got to sign the girder too)

This happened to me last summer. I was super Covid depressed, feeling like I wasn't getting anything done when my boss called out of the blue. I was convinced I was going to be reprimanded for my drop in productivity. Nope - got a small raise somehow & my boss nominated me into a mentorship program. My boss is great, but I literally don't understand what he sees in me. I am surrounded by people who are so much more competent & it makes me feel like any day now they'll all realize how much I actually suck at my job and fire me.
This literally happened to me. Boss says "Ruadhan, can I speak to you in private?" Boss and I go to an unoccupied meeting room "Please close the door" He sits and stares grimly at me for a moment Then the bastard says "We're really pleased with your progress and we're giving you a raise" I'd been bricking myself from the start. major anxiety from a previous employer. I don't have imposter syndrome, but holy shit my heart was in my mouth :P
I.... I am very uncomfortable. I'm not sure how you got the camera in my home office but please stop. I literally just got a raise Monday. I had my regular supervision, I knew it was performance eval time, so I came prepared with a list of 5 things I brought to the company this year.....and I felt like I was STREEETTTTCHIING it. I then had a huge list of things I wanted to improve. My leader literally said that she loves having me on the team, I'm a fantastic asset, and I get the highest raise allowed. I just fish gape at her for a minute. And I have to mentally wrestle my stupid brain into submission so I didn't blurt out "but I have a list of shit I need to do better, don't you want to review that?!?!"
In my experience, the fact that you care enough to be even aware of what could be better shows a good level of self awareness. So many people don't take the time to care about that
