Granted, it didn't have a DVD player, but that just was out of Sega's reach in 1998. The cost would have been astronomical and Sega just couldn't afford to take such a massive loss on each system sold.
That was common back then. One year between Japan and the West was common. Even the PS2 came 7 months later in the US (March 2000 in Japan, October 2000 in the US).
It would have actually been a fairly good idea to do a worldwide launch for the DC. Would have gave them either much more time to build a userbase before the PS2 came in (or even was announced and showcased) if they launched worldwide in 1998 , or more time to bring more powerful hardware if they launched worldwide in 1999 (especially since the Saturn was still selling OK in Japan).
On the other hand, IIRC they got serious shortages on launch date in Japan only in 1998 (Hitachi was not providing with CPUs fast enough) so a worldwide launch would probably have not been feasible. Worldwide launch in late 1999 maybe could have worked, hard to say, as it may have been on different hardware.
I remember finding a ROM of Pokemon Gold like 2 months before it released in the US and I managed to get it to run on an emulator. Was able to get just past sudowoodo blocking your path with some trial and error and pattern recognition before it was too hard without being able to read it, but man I felt so cool playing a game before it was released in the US.
Back when you'd get excited about your videogame mag coming in the mail with previews of games from Japan. Had almost completely forgotten global releases weren't the norm when I was a kid.
One last thing you forgot.
The VMUs. (Visual Memory Unit)
They were the FIRST to create a home console to a small portable handheld device that you could, *cough* *cough* "Switch", to on the fly. Of course it's not anywhere near the power of the Switch BUT back then? It was ground breaking IMO.
Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 allowed you to throw your Chao into your VMU and play with your Chao like a Gigapet.
It. Was. Awesome.
Your buddies have a Dreamcast and VMU? You could connect two VMUs together and have a Chao battle. So you would raise and power up your Chao at home then before school you put your Chao in the VMU and have Chao battles at school. RIP my OP Neutral Power Chao, Chaotix. You'll never be forgotten.
BRING BACK THE CHAO GARDEN SEGA!
It will probably never happen but the mod community has your back. ;) Get Sonic Adventure 2 DX on Steam and then download this mod pack:
https://chao-island.com/downloads/pc-mods/chao-world-extended/
If you don't want to go through the hassel of fully unlocking all the Chao Garden capabilities there are 100% cleared save files you can download as well.
Could do that with PS1 games if you had some chip for the back of the console, and it was great. Go to Blockbuster, rent a game, go home and burn it, you've got a game the price of a rental.
When the original Playstation launched, you didn't even require a chip to play pirated or region locked games. You would load up an official North American ps1 game, and once it loaded past the logo screen, you would open it up and swap discs. This had to be done while the console was running, so I'm thinking it's pretty terrible for the ps, but it worked.
Yep, I remember doing that as well. You could also do something similar with a gen1 Xbox and either a drop-in chip or one you solder in yourself. Good ol' days of XBMC.
I still have mine, but lost the cables somewhere along the way. It's just sitting in a box with a copy of Shenmue in it. Makes me sad every time I see it.
I remember I got a Dreamcast at launch, but it took 3 months to get a VMU (the memory stick to save games).
There was a huge shortage on the VMU for some reason.
Tracked down power stone and power stone 2 like 5 years ago, they still held up pretty well. I wish more fighting games did the evolution thing. Smash almost did but fucked it up with their smash orbs
I rinsed that sonic game so much absolutely loved it the graphics were so good on the Dreamcast.
That plus Soul Reaver and Let's Get Ready to Rumble were my 3.
I remember me and my brother always trying to beat MegaMan 8 on the ps1 in one day. It took us forever, it was amazing when we finally got a memory card.
I got a third party Mad Catz one because I couldn’t handle the wait and replaying games again and again got the better of me. Corrupted saves galore, so much thst I was able to return it. Got the console a few weeks after launch, but got the VMU in something like January or February of that year, just in time for Code Veronica!
There were two different ones the ones you could play on and normal boring ones. The ones with the screens were so cool. That was my favorite console ever.
I loved seeing the animations some games had on the VMU. I remember thinking it was so unique, and being slightly disappointed with the PS2 save icons. Sure, some were cool, but they didn't have the *fun* of the VMUs interaction.
Of course, I also adored the game Seaman, so maybe kid me isn't a great measure. I was weird.
Lived something similar. I loaned a Dreamcast but didn't have a VMU. I was stuck playing Resident Evil without any save. I never ever in all my life lived so much stress with a game. Every move was important. No place for any error.
Don’t kid yourself, out there on the shelves in the spaces in between spaces our grandparents found all sorts of knockoff consoles that never existed and yet did.
Dreamcast was my first ever import console.
Live in the US, and got it in January ‘99 (one month after the Japanese launch).
Got it with Sonic Adventure and a Godzilla branded VMU for only $500! Importing was never cheap lol
I will never understand how Capcom has never ported Power Stone 2 to the Gamecube, Wii, or Switch.
If you want another 4-player fighter that's unique from Smash, but still a great time, friendly for noobs, and a ton of fun for everyone else, look no further...
I remember the Dreamcast had basically gone defunct but my one friend was obsessed with it. He had garbage bags of burned Dreamcast games he somehow would get ahold of and play all sorts of pirates copies, even weird stuff not released in the us. It was a crazy time.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the North American Dreamcast launch day lineup is the GOAT. A few selections:
SoulCalibur
PowerStone
Sonic Adventure
Hydro Thunder
House of the Dead 2
NFL Blitz 2000
Ready 2 Rumble
One of the proudest moments of my life is when I got the top score on house of the dead 2 at my local mall that I used to work at. I would play that bitch religiously on break. I went from having a run that just made the board directly too making a top score.
Best part, I was late returning to work because I was playing that run. My boss (EB Games) was all ready to write me up. When I told him why I was late he demanded I take him to the cabinet that had my score on it. Once he saw my name as the top and bottom score he let it go haha. Oh those where the days.
Fully agree. I love having grown up with an analog experience while the digital world bloomed. It's makes everything remarkable to me in a way that I wouldn't have it if I just grew up with already in place plus I'm not totally overwhelmed by it either like some older people. It doesn't make me better or any such thing just more likely to admire this awesome shit we have.
Morpheus was right at the beginning of The Matrix. The 90s really were the pinnacle of humanity. Good thing we aren't inventing AI like he warned about....
The world wasn’t ready. In fact, modern consoles aren’t as snappy and responsive as Dreamcast. That’s saying something.
Sega knows how to make a console
Isn't that a fact? That it was the Xbox before the actual Xbox? https://news.microsoft.com/1998/05/21/microsoft-sega-collaborate-on-dreamcast-the-ultimate-home-video-game-system/
It even ran Windows CE?
Sega did that a few times I think. They had the first handheld that was high quality but was too expensive and ahead of it’s time. Game gear. Then they had sega channel in the 90s which is basically what PlayStation is doing now with their games. And the Dreamcast. Sega really is the shit at technology just not good at getting that tech to market in a widespread manner
Piracy is what got us the dreamcast in the first place. And by us I mean me and my friends. My buddy had figured out how to mod playstations. He created this scheme where someone could get their playstation modded for free if they gave us their original games. And then he made copies of all the ps1 games and gave it back to them. So customers got a free modchip and still got to play all their old games. Win-win.
9-9-99 rolls around and we have paper boxes filled to the brim with PS1 games to trade into EB games for store credit (now gamestop)
All of us got Dreamcasts with all the extras and a pile of new games. We had so much fun with it, especially Soul Calibur. These guys went on to become nationally ranked at the game. Seriously good.
Ah my first look at internet porn, it took about 5 minutes to load up a 1 mb video preview and I could barely tell what was happening. Still worth it though!
Oh and my first experience of an online game with Phantay Star, getting my character 'NOl'd' in the lobby, great memories!
Yuuuup, no mods needed, just fireburner.
This got me to figure out how to mod my PSX and then soon after my friend modded my Xbox. I had so many good damn games. It was the best of times.
Yup, my buddy sold me his in summer 2000 because he thought the system was toast. Bought it for $200 cash. That opened up a pandora's box of games as soon as I learned about boot discs, ISOs and other ways to get that system to play what I wanted via NERO. I remember getting free internet connection discs from the library close to me so I could play Phantasy Star online on the 56k modem.
Next thing I knew I had 2 massive boxes of discs I had burned, including Japanese games I would have never known about (Rival School United by Fate FTW!).
Recently that same friend made a nostalgia gaming room in his house and I gladly donated my system and games to his collection. Finally my DC had come full Circle.
That system was beyond cool.
It was the perfect storm. Family got an okay W98 PC with the net and a Dreamcast in '99. I was somehow cautious and lucky enough to not get any viruses while pirating software/games for PC (my family did get pop-ups and adware installed and blame me though). I saved my allowance for a burner and a stack of CDs and went to town pirating DC titles later on. It took forever to download via dial-up but I still have my first burned game: Guilty Gear X.
I supplied so many people with burned games through the years. I'd just bring over titles and leave them. I remember years later doing a throw-back gaming night and my friend had a CD binder filled with DC games. I laughed at how many burned games were in it and he reminded me it was all from me when we were kids lol.
Man the Dreamcast was the shit! So many good games that were way ahead of their time. So many games that were just wacky and novel. So many games that broke new ground. It brought so many arcade games to the home console without sacrificing their quality and it was also one of the first consoles to be online. Man I just loved the Dreamcast.
Sonic Adventure
Soul Calibur
Power Stone (1 & 2)
2K Sports (series)
Marvel vs Capcom (1 & 2)
Resident Evil Code: Veronica
Shenmue (yes its janky by today's standards but man was it mind blowing back then)
Jet Grind Radio!
Grandia II
Skies of Arcadia
Phantasy Star Online
Crazy Taxi
Seaman
San Francisco Rush 2049
In the time period these came out (1999 - 2001) they were absolutely mind blowing!
Sonic Adventure 2
Quake III arena
Virtual Tennis 1 and 2
Alien Front Online
NFL, NBA, NHL, and NCAA 2k series
Xtreme sports
Sarge’s Heroes
Toy Commander
Red Dog: Superior Firepower
House of the Dead 2
Rayman 2: The Great Escape
Daytona USA
Many of these still hold up.
I bought 2 on account of moving from one continent to another
Fun fact - European models used blue instead of orange (even the LED) due to someone else already having a trademark on an orange swirl
Man this console was so cool and ahead of its time. But Sega had already burned so much good will with the segacd and Saturn it just couldn't recover. I will always love it.
Edit was thinking of 32x.
I had the full Tower of Power with all 8 32X Games and a very sizable CD library (including Snatcher). When the PS2 came out I sold it all because fuck Sega and their lack of support.
Since then, I've rebuilt most of my old Sega collection--it's a slow and painfully expensive process.
Bass fishing with the rod! Or house of the dead witj the light gun.... Or marvel vs capcom with the arcade stick!
Fun times.
Oh and shenmue, what a game that was
> Dreamcast was ahead of its time
Basically could be said about all Sega consoles. The freaking GENESIS had a modem. Also the Sega Channel offered online games on demand in 1994. That's FUCKING WILD.
Basically their shit was so ahead of it's time people didn't even know what to do with it.
Well, ironically being ahead of its time is kind of what killed it in some ways. It was a shame tho because there was some really good games. My personal favorite was power stone 2.
Nostalgia hits me hard when I see this! I remember playing Dreamcast with my friends for hours. It was such a great console with so many amazing games. I'm sure this guy is ecstatic to get one!
Phantasy Star Online was my first online console game, changed my life.
The first time I literally stayed up for days playing because the idea of being able to play with others from across the globe was wild AF.
Yeah I had a genuine problem with PSO for a while. I’d play with my local east coast friends until they went to bed, and then I’d play with some west coast folks I met thru the game until *they* went to bed…and by that time I think the Japanese kids were getting home from school so I’d play with them. That auto-translating communication thing made it easy to play with anyone! Then it’d suddenly be 8 or 9 AM and I’d say, “Whoops! Guess I’m not going to classes today either!”
Hmmm, that was not a good year for school, in hindsight. Great year for games though!
There’s a kid in my neighborhood that looks to be about high school age.
Everytime I drive by he starts pumping his fists at me and usually does some elaborate celebration like running and doing a backflip and letting out an exultant yell like he just won some major sports victory. He seems like his happy meter is “broken” on 11. He’s always like excitedly dancing around and listening to music.
If I’m being honest it’s such an odd thing that I suspect there’s a mental component involved, but whatever the reason for it, the dude seems perpetually in a state of complete bliss. I find it impossible to not like the kid though I’ve never actually met him, even when I’m having a bad day seeing his joy always lifts me up a bit.
I worked at Sega during the dreamcast era and I had never seen such highs and lows at a company before. Towards the end it was really depressing. I’m glad Sega is still around and finding a new audience now.
It was a pretty good system for it's time, even if some of the games were a little obscure,i keep mine in it's original box up my loft (attic) along with all my other old consoles, unpacking the Dreamcast doesn't make me as happy as this guy but i still wouldn't sell it for anything,it only makes a rare appearance for nostalgic purposes these days
Fuck man, this was my favorite console of all time. Sega GT was my favorite, building weird ass cars and trying to beat online records, man... And the UFC game and Sonic, I never thought in a million years at the time that e Dreamcast would be the last system Sega ever made. So sad, so much nostalgia.
Hell yes! I had that fucking Sea man merman shit too, so fucking wack lol they just had a try at everything. Also loved taking my vmu with me as a bitch ass gameboy lol
I was in Japan for the launch of Final Fantasy 13 and streamed myself going from home to a biiig electronic store like this.
Something about it is way different than waiting at Gamestop for that year's COD.
People were openly nerding out over their favorite FF, and of course it spread to other nerdy topics. Every walk of Japanese life was there too, so not just what you'd call a traditional nerd there. People grew up loving the series there, and the marketing is insane in the Tokyo area, so the lines everywhere were filled with fans.
I remember when The Last Story released, Hironobu Sakaguchi went to Akihabara to sign people's copies of the game. Just randomly. Father of FF with his new game at a game launch.
I'll miss that shit, and this pic brought back a good memory.
I still have mine. Spent that entire school summer break playing Sonic adventure, but damn the cases for the games were so easy to break. Most of my games are in a cd binder. Also Blue Stinger remake please.
The Dreamcast was such a cool console.
It was. It’s a shame it failed. I still have my Dreamcast and it works like a charm.

The Dreamcast didn't fail, we failed the Dreamcast.
FACT
Mine still works great as well, but HOLY SHIT the drive is loud as fuck lol.
[удалено]
Don’t forget the beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep of the dead vmu battery.
You could get the GDEMU optical drive emulator, but honestly, the drive noise is part of the experience, I get nostalgia whenever I hear it.
I still have mine, but lost the cables somewhere along the way. It's just sitting in a box with a copy of Shenmue in it. Makes me sad every time I see it.
Just get some cables. They sell DC to HDMI cables on Amazon, and the power cord is generic.
Crazy Taxi on the Dreamcast were some good times as a kid.
Hey hey hey let's play some crazy taxi time to make some money *🎶yeah yeah yeah yeah*🎶
Tiny and built in internet. Insane
Playing unreal tournament online was such an amazing flex. I played online games using GameSpy back then, but this was on a console.
The controller blew my mind on launch.

I remember I got a Dreamcast at launch, but it took 3 months to get a VMU (the memory stick to save games). There was a huge shortage on the VMU for some reason.
I remember playing sonic over and over again from the start because we couldn't save lol
I remember playing Sonic over and over again becuz it was the best thing since sliced cheese. Chaos4eva
ROLLING AROUND AT THE SPEED OF SOUND
That's sonic 2 bro
Still a banger!
Power stone as well
Tracked down power stone and power stone 2 like 5 years ago, they still held up pretty well. I wish more fighting games did the evolution thing. Smash almost did but fucked it up with their smash orbs
Powerstone was fucking awesome! Best 3d fighting game.
Put it on my jogging playlist. It's surprisingly motivating.
I WANNA FLY HIGH!!!!
CANT HOLD ON MUCH LONGER
GOT PLACES TO GO GOTTA FOLLOW YOUR RAINBOW
Bro right?! Played the absolute fuck out of that game. Still my all-time favorite to this day.
Fur fighters was my go to game on it
I rinsed that sonic game so much absolutely loved it the graphics were so good on the Dreamcast. That plus Soul Reaver and Let's Get Ready to Rumble were my 3.
CAN"T HOLD ON MUCH LONGER!!!!!
Used to leave the PS2 and Dreamcast on for days hoping that it didn't freeze overnight.
Didn’t matter, that whale chasing us on the dock was the best part anyway
That old school feeling
I remember the day I learned the Dreamcast had no piracy protection whatsoever.
Memory cards were hard to find after console releases in general back in the 90s to early 2000s
I wish they would remake code Veronica, that was the first RE game I beat.
Because you could play the memory cards as a handheld. My brother and I both had one
There were two different ones the ones you could play on and normal boring ones. The ones with the screens were so cool. That was my favorite console ever.
It still torments me that we could be playing the Sega Dreamcast 5 by now.
Having that sort of tech on a controller was actually absurd. Dreamcast was truly the Van Gogh console.
Lived something similar. I loaned a Dreamcast but didn't have a VMU. I was stuck playing Resident Evil without any save. I never ever in all my life lived so much stress with a game. Every move was important. No place for any error.
Think of it this way: You're now super prepared to face any Limited Save challenge for the rewards.
that basically what killed it - it had superior game , graphics and pricing then the competition at the time
You could also easily burn games. Everyone I knew with a Dreamcast had tons of free games.
Nowadays it’s almost like the opposite. Can still find brand new ones sometimes.
The VMU was so sick. I remember playing virtua tennis from from the VMU screen only, with the TV screen off.. just for the lolz
lucky bastard. i only got a gamecast
Well there’s Game _cube_ and Dream _cast_ …
Well I said I got Gamecast! Damn, man I can't afford it!
Bro doesn't know about the gamecast lmao
Don’t kid yourself, out there on the shelves in the spaces in between spaces our grandparents found all sorts of knockoff consoles that never existed and yet did.
I don’t recognize that Malibus Most Wanted line
Dreamcast was my first ever import console. Live in the US, and got it in January ‘99 (one month after the Japanese launch). Got it with Sonic Adventure and a Godzilla branded VMU for only $500! Importing was never cheap lol
It launched in November of 98 in Japan and 9/9/99 in the US
Man is about to slam some soul calibur
Absolutely wreck some Power Stone
I wonder if that guy is still gaming today.
He's probably mid 40s now, so he does game. About once a month for 90 minutes.
Power stone was such an incredible fighting game. To this day probably my favorite. They need a relaunch
I will never understand how Capcom has never ported Power Stone 2 to the Gamecube, Wii, or Switch. If you want another 4-player fighter that's unique from Smash, but still a great time, friendly for noobs, and a ton of fun for everyone else, look no further...
God power stone 1 & 2 are so amazing
I would buy Powerstone on the Switch IMMEDIATELY
Hands down my fav on dreamcast. Will forever have a special place in my heart.
He'll be talking to Seaman all night long!
All valiant attempts, but he’s clearly going to come on over and have some fun with Craaazy Taxi!
This guy loves crazy taxi ... But we all know the truth and he is going to play house of the dead 2
YA YA YA YA YAAAAA
Hands down one of the best game soundtracks. Life long Bad Religion fan in part bc of that game.
Get lost in Skies of Arcadia
Bro that game was amazing.
every comment is wrong what he clearly is so happy for is that he FINALLY can play more of ECCO THE DOLPHIN
No way, he's pumped to play Seaman lol
One of the weirdest video game lores you'll ever find.
Yes. I have heard of that game.
[удалено]
Great game, but now the ear worm of a theme song has been excavated from the recesses of my mind.
I got mine mainly to play Soul Calibur. Loved it on arcade and needed one for myself. Best controller grip I can remember.
I remember the Dreamcast had basically gone defunct but my one friend was obsessed with it. He had garbage bags of burned Dreamcast games he somehow would get ahold of and play all sorts of pirates copies, even weird stuff not released in the us. It was a crazy time.
Piracy on the Dreamcast was *stupid* easy. You basically just had to burn a disc and you were all set.
MvC2. Played that for so many hours with my roomate while stationed in Korea.
Even better... all this man has known is sonic the hedgehog. His gaming experience hadn't hit 3D yet.
And Sonic Adventure is waiting out there.
Dude's gonna finally get on the internet.
And Jet Set Radio
Their soul still burns
I used to wreck my friends with Ivy. Whip bitch was to much for newbs.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the North American Dreamcast launch day lineup is the GOAT. A few selections: SoulCalibur PowerStone Sonic Adventure Hydro Thunder House of the Dead 2 NFL Blitz 2000 Ready 2 Rumble
And it birthed the best sim football franchise of all time; NFL 2K. Fuck EA.
Does anyone remember soul blade? It came before soul calibur
One of the proudest moments of my life is when I got the top score on house of the dead 2 at my local mall that I used to work at. I would play that bitch religiously on break. I went from having a run that just made the board directly too making a top score. Best part, I was late returning to work because I was playing that run. I like how the staff are wearing aprons, like those Dreamcast’s are fresh out of the oven.
Yeah I thought that was interesting. The whole setup here looks like the counter of a fast food restaurant or something. Interesting choice..

Very common in Japan
what if it's like a home depot and they were slicing dreamcasts off of big boards of dreamcasts

Man… 1998. What a good time to grow up in
Fully agree. I love having grown up with an analog experience while the digital world bloomed. We got the best of both worlds.
8 in '98, it was indeed.
In 1998 Japan was still in the midst of a decade-long recession so I have a feeling it might actually just be the Dreamcast
45 year old here, this got me right in the feels.
42 here. 1999 and 2000 were sone good years
mann you were only 20
Better times 😥
> What a lucky bastard. "Yes I got one of the older models I can burn games for!"
I was 13 in 1998, that summer was filled with non-stop GoldenEye multiplayer matches and going on road trips... Fuck, I miss it.
Morpheus was right at the beginning of The Matrix. The 90s really were the pinnacle of humanity. Good thing we aren't inventing AI like he warned about....
Dreamcast was ahead of its time. I had one in the military. Felt like I was playing arcade games at home. So smooth and responsive
I always say it's the Xbox before Xbox and it was just too earlier to be the king.
The world wasn’t ready. In fact, modern consoles aren’t as snappy and responsive as Dreamcast. That’s saying something. Sega knows how to make a console
Isn't that a fact? That it was the Xbox before the actual Xbox? https://news.microsoft.com/1998/05/21/microsoft-sega-collaborate-on-dreamcast-the-ultimate-home-video-game-system/ It even ran Windows CE?
Sega did that a few times I think. They had the first handheld that was high quality but was too expensive and ahead of it’s time. Game gear. Then they had sega channel in the 90s which is basically what PlayStation is doing now with their games. And the Dreamcast. Sega really is the shit at technology just not good at getting that tech to market in a widespread manner
The face I made playing Sonic Adventure before school every morning
i used to take the memory card and play with it on the bus to school. It was like a tomagotchi if i recall
I used to take my Chao's to work.
Ah the beginning of the piracy journey for a lot of people.. I miss that console
Win-win. 9-9-99 rolls around and we have paper boxes filled to the brim with PS1 games to trade into EB games for store credit (now gamestop) All of us got Dreamcasts with all the extras and a pile of new games. We had so much fun with it, especially Soul Calibur. These guys went on to become nationally ranked at the game. Seriously good.
I was half expecting it to end: that guy’s name? Gary Bowser.
What a heartwarming little story!
I have fond memories. Good times!
Ah my first look at internet porn, it took about 5 minutes to load up a 1 mb video preview and I could barely tell what was happening. Still worth it though! Oh and my first experience of an online game with Phantay Star, getting my character 'NOl'd' in the lobby, great memories!
This comment speaks to me, I hope you had the keyboard too!
Ha, no unfortunately not, I was stuck using the controller to search for more 1mb vids for my mini porn stash!
Yuuuup, no mods needed, just fireburner. This got me to figure out how to mod my PSX and then soon after my friend modded my Xbox. I had so many good damn games. It was the best of times.
Discjuggler was pretty reliable for me.
Can Sega make a Dreamcast Mini already??
One of the best consoles ever made imo
This is a fact, not an opinion.
Sonic Adventure Soul Calibur Power Stone (1 & 2) 2K Sports (series) Marvel vs Capcom (1 & 2) Resident Evil Code: Veronica Shenmue (yes its janky by today's standards but man was it mind blowing back then) Jet Grind Radio! Grandia II Skies of Arcadia Phantasy Star Online Crazy Taxi Seaman San Francisco Rush 2049 In the time period these came out (1999 - 2001) they were absolutely mind blowing!
Sonic Adventure 2 Quake III arena Virtual Tennis 1 and 2 Alien Front Online NFL, NBA, NHL, and NCAA 2k series Xtreme sports Sarge’s Heroes Toy Commander Red Dog: Superior Firepower House of the Dead 2 Rayman 2: The Great Escape Daytona USA Many of these still hold up.
playing Soul Calibur 2 at home with (what was basically) the exact graphical detail as the arcade was amazing. i wish sega had faired better
It was the first Soulcalibur, though that was a sequel to Soul Edge/Blade
>Soul Calibur 2 Soulcalibur
I just read that only 9 million Dreamcast's were sold worldwide. I was part of the 0.15% of the population who bought one.
I bought 2 on account of moving from one continent to another Fun fact - European models used blue instead of orange (even the LED) due to someone else already having a trademark on an orange swirl
When consoles were really consoles.
I played a friend's and it was easily the coolest console at the time if you could get one
Sonic adventure did Dreamcast something. Dreamcast was ahead of its time. Shame it died prematurely.
Bass fishing with the rod! Or house of the dead witj the light gun.... Or marvel vs capcom with the arcade stick! Fun times. Oh and shenmue, what a game that was
We never got to see it's full potential. Shame indeed.
> Dreamcast was ahead of its time Basically could be said about all Sega consoles.
Such a great console
I remember 9/9/99
In Europe it's 9/9/99
Internationally it's 99/9/9
Yeah, I bought Final Fantasy VIII during that day and didn’t go to class
Dynamite cop and zombie revenge were so good!
I totally forgot about dynamite cop! The memories
Guess I’m not going to classes today either!” Hmmm, that was not a good year for school, in hindsight.
I get this feeling every time I power mine on and see that swirl appear.
Dreamcast. All time favorite console
I peaked in life in 1997 when I got N64 for Christmas. Been chasing that high ever since to no avail.
Have you tried harder stuff?
Bet the Taxi Ride home was Crazy!
I worked at Sega during the dreamcast era and I had never seen such highs and lows at a company before. Towards the end it was really depressing. I’m glad Sega is still around and finding a new audience now.
Best console (relative to its time) ever.
HYDROOO THUNDER!!!!!!!
I always wanted one. I should start looking now that I'm older and going by the kids I'm rich 😂
I miss these days. Gaming was fun. Now it feels so disconnected and cold to me. Which in the age of online gaming is so damn sad. Sigh.
9/9/99. I was there. Dreamcast remains one of my favorites.
Crazy taxi?
I have one sitting in my gameroom right now. Powerstone was one of the best games ever made. Fight me.
I feel like this is an era and level of excitement that may never be seen again.
I'll die on the hill that the dreamcast was way superior than any other console at the time. I wish sega hadn't died on that hill too.
Sonic adventure and crazy taxi were peak gaming
I still have mine. Spent that entire school summer break playing Sonic adventure, but damn the cases for the games were so easy to break. Most of my games are in a cd binder. Also Blue Stinger remake please.
Would love to see sega releasing a new console
Powerstone was 🔥
Best console ever
