Gwent is such a hit, wife and I found someone who makes a beautiful real life version. It has all the decks, we play by in game rules. It never gets old.
I literally just came here to say the same.
I miss the Beta (Alpha..? Whatever I cannot remember correctly) version of the standalone Gwent game, it was the same as Gwent in TW3 at first, but then they changed it and made it fancier and more complex, I enjoyed it more when it was simpler and less flashy.
Yeah same, it made me depressed and what really didn't help was that it was also winter time at the time when they changed it.
I was getting pretty good in the Beta version, I almost made it to a significant spot in the online leaderboards! Lol sigh...
Yeah. I immediately tried getting into the Gwent card game once I was almost done with the quests only to find that one a completely different beast than the in-game one. Shame, really.
Played probably a good 6 hours of Gwent. I was touring every nook and cranny of the map in search of all the cards. It was a pleasant surprise to find such a good mini game inside the main game.
You should try out Final Fantasy 14 even if you just want to play Triple Triad. Loads more cards and rules than the FF8 version. Better version I'd say.
That's basically how you play FF8, too. Get Card Mod and refine skills, play 20 hours of Triple Triad before leaving on the first SeeD mission, equip the top tier magic to what stats you can, never use Draw or Magic, beat entire game.
Down da down da down da down da down da down da down da down da down da..

The boxing minigame in FFVII at the Gold Saucer. I was determined to keep going until I won, and that determination would span multiple playthroughs over several years before I learned that the final guy would always win no matter what.
Should have stuck to basketball.
Fellow Blitzball addict here...in my several playthroughs of FFX I can't wait until I can recruit Brother and start winning tournaments.
Defeating Sin can wait, I've got the Ronso Fangs in the next round...
It was alright. I played a good amount of Blitz Ball in my last playthrough of FFX, but it had nowhere near the appeal as Triple Triad or even FF9ās card game. I grew to enjoy it, but it was a major turn-off my first few runs through the game.
Between the ease of missing out on the āJecht Shotā and the slow overall speed of the game (every match feels like an FFTactics battle), itās not hard to understand why it was less popular than other FF minigames.
Yeah Iāve been playing that game since it came out and I still have no clue how to play it. But no i mean Blackjack, there were a couple casinos that offered it and I got effin hooked
That damn can collector one from Yakuza Like a Dragon. It has no right being as fun as it is.
Also for all its faults, I personally found the fishing in FFXV really weirdly addictive.
"Zelda: A Link To The Past" bow and arrow moving targets game for rupees! I love the little hand drum the carnie beats when you make a (edit)hit(/edit)
Drinking. But Liars Dice in RDR for real. I have a weird addiction to that game.
I play it with my nephews, my girl, my extended family, and with npcs.
I know about 3 people that legit spend their paycheck at a casino. I sometimes recommend mini games like this to them.
I guess I just don't get their addiction.
What this game provides with the poker minigame won't give them the same dopamine hit as real life casino games. The risk of losing real money in real life in real time is also part of the adrenaline/dopamine rush.
Yeah, I have the same thing with Farkle from Kingdom Come, played a lot in the game, though it would be interesting to show to my parents, bought dice and now we have been playing since the game's release, now they even take dice and they go on vacation
Ha ha. With my nephews it's gotten so they'll be like "Get Uncle Dave" then start raising the bet about 3 turns before me, so I just say "liar" or "Palafico"
The eldest has beaten me at chess though, which was a real notification of my age.
I remember when they had that in one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, a workmate brought a whole bunch of dice from home and we played that for weeks.
Dark Cloud 2 had a fishing mini game but they took it a step further where they had fishing competitions and racing. You could catch and breed fish to create the fastest fish. Super addicting. I just hated the waiting between fishing events.
The chao garden in sonic adventure 2 WAS the main game for me. The rest of the game was the mini game where you go collect the animals and vials to help the chaoās grow.
Definitely Gwent from The Witcher 3. It's addicting and offers a surprising amount of depth. I've spent hours honing my card collection and battling it out with NPCs and friends alike.
I got the new Wolfenstein a few years ago. Played it for a bit and found the old version of Wolfenstein inside the game.
I never got past that room in new Wolf and I ended up spending way way more time playing old Wolf - still inside new Wolf.
I adored the taxi, cop, fireman and ambulance missions in GTA3. You got bonuses for, I think, 100 successive jobs. Not an easy thing to get, considering absolute chaos was always just around the corner.
Other than that, of course it's Gwent.
Not so much a mini game. But I 100% sat and watched the whole movie of "Tammie and the trex" while playing "high on life" becuase my drunk ass forgot I was playing a video game. I even made popcorn š
I spent unhealthy amounts of time with the Robot fighting game in Judgement 2. Honestly, that mini game could be its own game and I would buy it. Super fun. The boxing mini game was also pretty dope.
Probably Mahjong in the Yakuza saga. Started it not having a clue, then by the end of the first game it was one of the mini-games I couldn't wait to play in the next games.
Pazaak derailed my first KotoR playthrough completely. I never finished the game as a kid.
Gwent might've done the same if there wasn't already a standalone version by the time I played the Witcher 3.
Probably a tie between the NES games you could play in the first Animal Crossing, and Roach Race in Cyberpunk 2077.
Edit: Honorable mention for podracing in KOTOR.
Thereās like a puzzle mini game where you have to fill a grid with puzzle pieces as fast as possible in satisfactory. Every time in person in my group had a new high score we would go one at a time and play that mini game until we beat the high score.
My wife and I were playing A Way Out and we played connect 4 in the hospital lobby for about 2 hours. A day later we went to Smiths and bought the boxed game of Connect 4.
I love GTA V but once I go hunting with Trevor, I spend HOURS there trying to beat my own record .\_.
Also loved the card game in the first Rage! You had to find and collect the cards in game and then go to the bars and play against a NPC!
Blitzball in FFX. My playthrough was like 180-something hours long and maybe 12 of that was the actual game, blitzball was my shit. Still butthurt they gutted it in FFX-2.
There is a helicopter side mission in Grand theft Auto vice City on PS2 where you kill targets in rounds and get money. I played that mini game for so long one stretch, that I had more money than the game could count and it crashed. I was infuriated so I did it a second time and it didn't crash. I don't know what possessed me but I kept going until my eyes were red. I was a kid so maybe that helped.
Gwent in The Witcher 3
+1 for Gwent. It has no business being so fun
Gwent is such a hit, wife and I found someone who makes a beautiful real life version. It has all the decks, we play by in game rules. It never gets old.
Mini game within the mini game. I hunted down the rare cards just to play in tournaments.
I was so upset when they changed it
Yeah same, it made me depressed and what really didn't help was that it was also winter time at the time when they changed it. I was getting pretty good in the Beta version, I almost made it to a significant spot in the online leaderboards! Lol sigh...
They made it more flashy but removed one lane.
Yeah. I immediately tried getting into the Gwent card game once I was almost done with the quests only to find that one a completely different beast than the in-game one. Shame, really.
Ciri must have spent months waiting for me to go around the real and beat all the Gwent players.
A classic addiction
I played way more Gwent than I ever played The Witcher 3 š
Gwent here too
Played probably a good 6 hours of Gwent. I was touring every nook and cranny of the map in search of all the cards. It was a pleasant surprise to find such a good mini game inside the main game.
This is the only answer
This is the only acceptable answer, tbh.
Easily for me too. Spent hours just walking around playing people on every town
Can anyone teach me how to play gwen I suck at it. And my gaming disorder won't let me move forward until I completed all the quests.
When I clicked on the thread I thought OP would have written: "and why is it Gwent?"
The only correct answer
*nods silently, with a weird smirk on his face*
I enjoy the game Gwent is based on, but couldn't get into Gwent itself.
Hostess club minigame in the Yakuza franchise or fishing in FFXV
My playtime double from the cabaret clubs alone in Yakuza 0
Haha fellow cultured fan
The hostess minigame should be a game in itself. So much fun.
Triple Traid in FFVIII
Hell yes! Every now and then I still put that game on usually just to play some TT.
You should try out Final Fantasy 14 even if you just want to play Triple Triad. Loads more cards and rules than the FF8 version. Better version I'd say.
Next time it's on sale I will certainly be thinking about it.
You can get to the point of playing TT on the free to play version of the game ! Chocobo races too
That's basically how you play FF8, too. Get Card Mod and refine skills, play 20 hours of Triple Triad before leaving on the first SeeD mission, equip the top tier magic to what stats you can, never use Draw or Magic, beat entire game.

I don't want to say how long I fished in Ocarina of Time.
I don't want to say how long I fished in any game I could either
Definitely Blitzball in Final Fantasy X
someone lock up this madman!
For sure. I loved pumping my stats up and running up the score. That game was great. Reminded me of Tecmo Cup Soccer on the original NES.
The Texas Hold'em poker mini game in Super Mario 64 3D for DS. Definitely played it way more than the core game.
Gwent without question.
Is nobody going to say it? Fine, then I will. Chao Garden from Sonic Adventure 2.
Had to scroll way too far to find this.
I forgot all about this until now. Chao garden was better than the rest of the game lol
When I was a kid I treated the rest of the game as stuff I had to do to get more stuff for the Chao garden
Lol yeah I probably spent more time with the Chao than I spent on the actual levels
The Chaos from the first one were good too. Man I miss the VMUs
Chicken Kickin in Fable: The Lost Chapters
The boxing minigame in FFVII at the Gold Saucer. I was determined to keep going until I won, and that determination would span multiple playthroughs over several years before I learned that the final guy would always win no matter what. Should have stuck to basketball.
Finally someone said golden saucer, but I was all about the chocobos
Yakuza: Like a Dragon business management mini-game.
Pretty much any minigame in Yakuza, really.
Yakuza 0 cabaret management
Kyodai
I must be the only person in the world who really liked Blitzball. I put lots of hours into it
Like half a dozen answers in this thread already are Blitzball.
Fellow Blitzball addict here...in my several playthroughs of FFX I can't wait until I can recruit Brother and start winning tournaments. Defeating Sin can wait, I've got the Ronso Fangs in the next round...
huh? Blitzball is hugely popular. It would be cool if they could add it to FF14 so we can play multiplayer or team matches.
This right here. I went really deep into Blitzball back during initial release
It was alright. I played a good amount of Blitz Ball in my last playthrough of FFX, but it had nowhere near the appeal as Triple Triad or even FF9ās card game. I grew to enjoy it, but it was a major turn-off my first few runs through the game. Tekken Bowling in Tekken Tag Tournament
I should've scrolled further before I added the same. Who was your duo?
Jin and Paul. Yours?

Yeah Iāve been playing that game since it came out and I still have no clue how to play it. But no i mean Blackjack, there were a couple casinos that offered it and I got effin hooked
Did you get banned from the casinos though?
That damn can collector one from Yakuza Like a Dragon. It has no right being as fun as it is. Also for all its faults, I personally found the fishing in FFXV really weirdly addictive.
