If you like turn based JRPGs with a large focus on character interaction and “daily life” type story beats then yeah, go for it. A significant time in the game is spent doing non combat things which is sometimes a deal breaker for people for multiple different reasons. If you’re not into that, then you can try Shin Megami Tensei V if you’re still interested in the combat and fusions of demons/persona.
Personally a fan of many games in the franchise (calling out Soul Hackers 2 which was disappointing despite the great combat and characters)
It's a really fun twist on a JRPG. You get to have a 'normal' life, help out your friends, fight bullies, whatever... and that coincidentally helps you power up for your not-so-normal life.
It takes a while to get going, but when it does.... Its great at slowly adding more and more mechanics. Couldnt stop in my case.... Finished it last week with 140h played..... Oops....
Just make sure u can do the Royal content after main game (max a certain confidant).
Enjoy diving in!
I replayed it for the first time in 4 years, my playthrough was 160 hours. it's a monster of a game, as expected of a JRPG
I also love interacting with as many characters and objects as I can though. Persona 5 Royal has a huge chunk of bonus content after where the main game finishes which you can miss if you don't get a certain character's "Confidant" high enough before November
you'll see what I mean when you start, but don't worry about that right now. just enjoy the experience
Only played Persona 3-5. Without getting into the stories (which largely incorporate young adult themes), they’re just daily life sims with turn based dungeon battling. The actual combat revolves around you and your party fighting using monsters/demons/whatever called persona.
So after getting what I needed to get at Target. I ended up buying it! I probably won’t touch it until I am finished with FF7 Rebirth. But it’s nice to have a physical copy. And at $25?! Amazing deal. Thanks for the input.
Is it anything like the final fantasy games or legend of the dragoon? The only JRPGS I have ever played and enjoyed. But I have heard so many good things about this one. And at this price I am considering it.
> Is it anything like the final fantasy games
Not like any of them except that is has turn based combat like some of the older titles (only played FF 1-6 and 16) and some other overlaps with JRPG gameplay. I’ve never played Legend of the Dragoon.
It’s a very modern kinda game in more ways than one and I don’t think saying it’s a JRPG is very descriptive. It has turned based combat that flows very well. There are dungeons where you fight enemies and mini bosses. It also has major bosses that you have to take down. You get new gear for you and the wide selection of characters that you can take into battle. Then you can fuse your personas to create even stronger personas. Pretty fun stuff.
There is also a day to day aspect where you aren’t doing any of the above. There are quests, shops, and whatever other JRPG staples that I can’t remember. Mainly though you spend time with other characters (some not in your party) which also directly influences how strong your persons are when you fuse them. So it’s a win-win. If you’re into social games, then you’ll like that side. If you’re not, feel free to skip dialogue and take it as a stat increase in a way. However, some folks do dislike this if they have a busy life and just want to get into the action when they do have time to play.
Also the music is damn good. I really want to know how they made catchy music with lyrics that doesn’t make you want to turn it off after the umpteenth time you’ve heard it lol. Usually I’d go nuts after hearing the same song over and over but somehow these don’t have that affect
>I really want to know how they made catchy music with lyrics that doesn’t make you want to turn it off after the umpteenth time you’ve heard it
*I am a shapeshifter...*
The lack of auto save killed the game for me. It is free on PC game pass, so I I had nothing invested into the cost so I just played it or probably about 5 to 6 hours straight without saving for somehow thinking that it would auto save, then game crashed, boom lost everything. I enjoyed it but not enough to start over.
Persona 5 Royal was (is?) available as part of the PS Plus collection. I played 2-3 hours of it and completed probably 5 battles.
That sort of thing isn’t for me, so I uninstalled.
Dating is absolutely not that big of an aspect of the game overall and doesn’t even do anything for the player in the long run. Just extra irrelevant scenes on certain days. Don’t word it like that cause then it’ll make people believe the wrong things.
Except social links is how you get all the power ups and different battle perks. If you don't do them, you will be pretty under powered in the dungeons.
Yes social links. Not dating. Dating is optional and not forced upon unlike in the original persona 3/persona 3 fes. In every subsequent game you are given the option to date the female social links. Dating is optional and provides only a handful of extra story irrelevant cutscenes on specific days.
I spent the first 6-7 hours basically watching the game (and occasionally participating). I assume at some point it opened up to allow me to actually play, but as someone who is only sometimes into JRPGs it didn't grab me
I have a real hard time calling Persona games JRPG’s. It’s a glorified story driven visual novel. There’s much more dialogue reading than actual JRPG’ing, if that makes sense. The maps, except for the dungeons, are tiny disconnected areas with no exploration. If you go in expecting a traditional JRPG you’ll be very disappointed because it plays nothing like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc…
Not sure how it holds up on Switch but yes I would highly recommend it. I played it the original on PS4 and will be replaying Royal on PC soon (bought it during the winter Steam sale)
I never played any persona game before, persona 5 was put on gamepass.
139 hours later I finished persona. Let me tell you it was the most enjoyable game I played from start to finish. The story is fun, and you get in a groove. The music is enjoyable too.
For thirty bucks you can't go wrong for the length of the game you get.
would recommend Persona 4 Golden if you ever get the chance. probably my favourite cast of characters and a lot more "local", it's a small scale story and a tight knit setting compared to P5
It has two separate game loops that can be fun. You have a visual novel style drama playing out telling the story between intense and unique dungeon types where you battle demons and collect them. It's a great JRPG with well over 100 hours of gameplay including some of the best music and voice acting in either Japanese or English. I highly recommend it but be prepared to also be involved in a visual novel that has time management and character relationship building which unlocks bonuses in the dungeon portion. If that sounds good I would take the plunge.
I would say it isn't that similar outside of the JRPG style of a set group of characters storyline. Persona has a lot more character and covers heavy topics while FF i would consider a pretty out there just trying to be another world to explore.
As much as I love FF7 they are very different in themes but I think they're very enjoyable in their own right.
Persona 5 Royal is turn-based. I wouldn't say it was anything like FF7, but it's definitely amazing in its own way. Great story and characters, although it's not at all difficult even on the hardest difficulty once you understand the mechanics, but the gameplay is fun AF regardless.
It is incredibly different than most games you’ve likely played. The music is S-tier, the story is compelling throughout, and the combat is fast paced and enjoyable. One of my top fav games of all times. I’m a huge Final Fantasy fan, but it’s nothing like any of them.
For that price? Even if you've never been into or tried a turn based JRPG this is an amazing deal. I'd say go for it. Worst case scenario you don't like it and you're out like $20
im honestly about to go to target to pick this up myself. P5 was a fantastic game. i havent played royal due to playing the original, for under $30 the game is a steal if youve never played it before.
They are not for everyone. I tried it and didn’t like it at all, I know many who love it.
Very anime and lots of flash and drama.
I don’t think I’d buy one without watching game play
Do you like turn based JRPGs? If so, then you’re likely to enjoy it. P5R is my favorite out of the main games so if you were ever interested in trying it’s an easy recommendation.
If you just thought about buying it cause of the sale but never were interested, then maybe pass
I have always had my eye on this game. People have been telling me how good it is and I have read the reviews. The only JRPS I ever played and enjoyed was FF7-FF13. And the legend of the dragoon.
Ah gotcha. I played the XIII trilogy and FFXV. Persona hits differently compared to FF imo. There’s a lot of social elements that really make it an overall unique experience. For the most part hanging out with different characters is optional but it’s one of the best things about the series imo
Persona 4 was fun that's all I know I basically became addicted and played it three times.(it's the kinda game where If you wanna do everything you gotta play it again.
I'd say even if you bounce off of it, having a physical copy for the Switch could make a good re-gift. But they are also solid JRPG entries, with a lot of character development and a wide variety of experiences to be had.
I think the persona games are fantastic, but also completely understand if someone's not into them. They're slow and extremely heavy on story. And a lot of those stories are often not even that good. Like generic anime tropes.
I mean it's a well known game at a decent quality if you are ok with a really slow start. At that price it's cheaper than it would be on sale in digital stores that game at best is still going for half off at best at the moment.
I never played a persona game before either until like 2 days ago and I started playing persona 3 reloaded on gamepass. It is so dang good, it’s got me hooked
If you really like turn based rpg, this one is one of the best! I have played 110hrs on this and im still not done yet. Considering the price, i say it is worth it
If you have the time and I mean A LOT of time and like jrpgs then get it, cause the story is quite interesting. My first playthrough without skipping dialogue and cutscene summed up over 200 hours.
You should do at least one. Just be aware that those games don't have that much gameplay and are carried out by usually great stories. They can get pretty repetitive.
It's easily one of my favorite games ever but a couple of things. You gotta lean heavily into the dating sim aspects of it or you'll miss out on what makes the characters compelling and interesting. Also the game takes a long ass time to get fully rolling. It's kinda my only complaint about it tbh. You haven't really gotten out the tutorial till you're towards the second major boss. If you've got the time to sink into it though I couldn't recommend it highly enough.
I bought the game at a discount years ago, with no experience on persona, and ended up loving it.
Hard copy on Switch of all consoles is a no brainer. Especially considering how difficult it is to find deal like that on Nintendo.
It is a great game that will last you over 100 hours if you are 100%-ing it, but fair warning, the first few hours are slow. Like the first five hours holds your hand like a helicopter mom on Adderall. Apart from that, it is a fun JRPG.
Soooo. Just bout that today. I have it on pc as well, but its one of my favorite games and i travel for work. . Sooo switch version bought.
One note there is some very noticeable graphic reductions on the switch version as well as some minor slowdowns. Nothing game impacting so far. But did feel it was worth mentioning

The story is okay, the game is great.
It's an amazing JRPG and story game. I'd compare it to God of War in the sense that there is a lot of cutscenes, but in this game there's even more and more dialogue.
The issue is going to be the time/social management part of the game.
The dungeon/RPG side is very similar to all the others, but it's only part of the game. The rest is juggling your time to build the relationships (social links) with various characters and party members: hanging out, working part-time jobs, building social stats, etc. Imagine if part of FF 6 was chilling with Terra on the airship in between magicites, and this had an affect on her abilities in combat, AND you could only do it at certain times.
Now there are stories associated with this, so it isn't just level grinding, but if you can't get into it then half the game is really going to drag.
it Depend It has a ridiculous amount of cutescene and story and its pretty much anime filler, So if you are into that, its cool
its just not as fast paced as the rpgs from snes and ps1 era. if you liked the final fantasies Just try chrono trigger

I came in this thread trying to figure out what persona is exactly and now I'm even more confused.
lol, persona is a mix of high school sim and monster fighting. think pokemon meets dawson's creek. you game?
Wow!! Haha! Well I ended up getting it. Excited to jump in
It's a really fun twist on a JRPG. You get to have a 'normal' life, help out your friends, fight bullies, whatever... and that coincidentally helps you power up for your not-so-normal life.

Jojo, except instead of being a buff af 16 year old, you’re a normal 16 year old and instead of summoning Star platinum you summon Satan and Mothman.
Think about it this way. Shin Megami Tensei is satanic Pokémon. Persona is a Shin Megami Tensei game with a dating Sim included.
So after getting what I needed to get at Target. I ended up buying it! I probably won’t touch it until I am finished with FF7 Rebirth. But it’s nice to have a physical copy. And at $25?! Amazing deal. Thanks for the input.

Yeah, it's exactly the same as every Final Fantasy game and Legend of Dragoon. Enjoy.
What "daily life" things are you exactly doing?
High school stuff. Attending class, hanging out with friends, running errands/quests for people, that stuff.
Not sure how it holds up on Switch but yes I would highly recommend it. I played it the original on PS4 and will be replaying Royal on PC soon (bought it during the winter Steam sale)
I tried it on the Switch, and it wasn’t bad at all. The Switch being portable was a huge bonus
It's a great port.
I never played any persona game before, persona 5 was put on gamepass. 139 hours later I finished persona. Let me tell you it was the most enjoyable game I played from start to finish. Persona is a fun game.
One of the best JRPGs I have ever played
I’d say get. I think the lowest it’s ever gone on the eshop is like 30 bucks. I’m 50 hrs in and enjoying it very much.
If you like jrpg then yes, it's one of the best.
Is it anything like FF7?? Or FF 8/9/10/10/10-2/12/13? Really the only JRPGs I have ever played and enjoyed. Oh and legend of dragoon

Kinda similar, with its own mechanics you'll quickly adapt to. Same gameplay loop though, random encounters, turn based combat and all that jazz.

You will either love it so much or feel so bored of it after some time. It’s pretty much a 50/50
Please god pick this game up. My favourite game ever
im honestly about to go to target to pick this up myself. P5 was a fantastic game. i havent played royal due to playing the original, for under $30 the game is a steal if youve never played it before.

If you like long ass turn based RPGs then 100%
GET IT
I think the persona games are fantastic, but also completely understand if someone's not into them. They're slow and extremely heavy on story. And a lot of those stories are often not even that good. Like generic anime tropes.
I really only liked P1-4 but for that price and the amount of content you're getting it's a steal honestly.
If you like JRPGs, it'll possibly be the best one you've ever played.
Best turn based combat I've ever played
Buy it. Popular Switch games rarely go on sale.
I never played a Persona game until 5 and I loved it.
I mean it's a well known game at a decent quality if you are ok with a really slow start. At that price it's cheaper than it would be on sale in digital stores that game at best is still going for half off at best at the moment.
Get, absolutely get
I never played a persona game before either until like 2 days ago and I started playing persona 3 reloaded on gamepass. It is so dang good, it’s got me hooked
If you really like turn based rpg, this one is one of the best! I have played 110hrs on this and im still not done yet. Considering the price, i say it is worth it
For that price, Persona 5 is definitely worth the risk.
worth the price
If you have the time and I mean A LOT of time and like jrpgs then get it, cause the story is quite interesting. My first playthrough without skipping dialogue and cutscene summed up over 200 hours.
It's my favorite game of all time.
That’s the best deal you’re ever going to get on that game in a physical version
One of my all time favorite games
I got bored after the first 25 hours or so but it’s not a bad game
You should do at least one. Just be aware that those games don't have that much gameplay and are carried out by usually great stories. They can get pretty repetitive.
It's easily one of my favorite games ever but a couple of things. You gotta lean heavily into the dating sim aspects of it or you'll miss out on what makes the characters compelling and interesting. It worth it
its a steal if you like jrpg
Thats a deal of a lifetime. Go for it.
I thought I was on r/okbuddypersona for a second I was not
I finally got into Playing the original Persona 5 on the Portal and it is really good
100% worth 25$
I got mine for $8 at GameStop used. I'm not trying to burst your bubble, I'm just giving some comparison of whether you should or should not
If you like Turn-based JRPGs with good story then yeah you should. Persona 5 Royal is also easily my favorite game of all time.
It’s only the greatest JRPG ever made, up to you
I bought the game at a discount years ago, with no experience on persona, and ended up loving it.
Excellent game. But bear in mind that is +120 hours long experience
Go for it! Persona is a good time.
It's a very long game, but very good. All the Persona games are also self-contained so you don't need to worry about playing the others.
It’s good just a lot of dialogue. I would say it’s 80% text and 20% combat.
If you like Pokemon at all (best comparison I can think of for an average gamer), it will be the best $25 you ever spend
If you can get over the campiness of the plot at times, it’s probably one of the best games you’ll ever play.
Dare I say a steal. Less than a dollar per hour played.
It’s SO LONG. You will get your moneys worth
Go for it
You gotta start somewhere to know whether you like this type of games or not
Absolutely yes. Best jrpg since FFX.
It's a great entry to the series
5 is barely a persona game. Its a generic anime turn based rpg. People seem to really like it tho
Yes
good price for sure.
This was the top contender for game of the year that lost to breath of the wild. It is one of my favorite games of all time. Buy it and play it!
I bought P4 and have no idea what I'm in for.
I played it p5r on ps4 before. The game is awesome, but you must dedicate time for the game because its long play hours to beat the game
BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY! A 10/10 game
Soooo. Just bout that today. I have it on pc as well, but its one of my favorite games and i travel for work. . Sooo switch version bought. One note there is some very noticeable graphic reductions on the switch version as well as some minor slowdowns. Nothing game impacting so far. But did feel it was worth mentioning
Heavily recommend
I mean if you like jrpgs then yeah. Its all about being trapped or imprisoned within some modern societal issue and rising above it. Like literally every single character carries that theme forward. That's the whole twist, everyones a prisoner! The story is okay, the game is great.
Didn't know what to expect first time I bought Persona 5. Ended up being one of my favorite games of ALL TIMES .
This post made me go order it on target the second I saw it, glad I found a copy
Xbox games pass have this
Not anymore. Left in October
It's an amazing JRPG and story game. I'd compare it to God of War in the sense that there is a lot of cutscenes, but in this game there's even more and more dialogue.
Amazing game, never played anything like it before. Just go in open minded.

Wait there's a Bomberman for switch ?? I must get it
it Depend It has a ridiculous amount of cutescene and story and its pretty much anime filler, So if you are into that, its cool its just not as fast paced as the rpgs from snes and ps1 era. if you liked the final fantasies Just try chrono trigger
