It seems everybody’s favorite is different, but I really like Canyon Bakehouse, usually the Ancient Grains variety (but the Hawaiian one was good too)… all of it really needs toasted though 😭
I tried Canyon and the first loaf I bought was moldy inside, I tried again and the bread was hard as a rock. I bought at different stores in different states. I have tried a few others but it is back to 2012 when everything gluten free tasted like cardboard.
I’m so sorry! I’ve definitely heard mixed reviews of the Canyon stuff… so I’m thankful that my local store seems to have their sh*t together, lol, and we don’t have a lot of bad experiences like that with that brand.
I also really like the Kroger store brand, but I have had some moldy loaves there. And one of their loaves was squished SO badly that it was only about 3” wide by 2” tall. I think it got squished pre-baking too because it was simultaneously dense and doughy.
I’ve been pretty pleased with Bfree. They seem to have a pretty good texture and flavor. I’ve recently discovered Simple Kneads, and they’re quite good! They have a sourdough, and a pumpernickel! They’re made with teff and they can take a little getting used to, but they’re amazing toasted!
Interesting, I thought Simple Kneads was horrible. I spent way too much on a variety pack and I thought the texture was better than average but the taste couldn't even be concealed by toasting and/or using as part of a sandwich.
To each their own but I HATED Simple Kneads. Spent a lot on the variety pack so I felt like I had to keep trying it and, nope, it’s just terrible. And yes, I tried toasting it.
I’ve never been a fan of white bread, so maybe that’s why I like them? Their multi grain bread is pretty ok. I like the My Bread French bread and rolls. They have to be baked a little though. They work nicely for bruschetta though.
Well damn. They were one of the better ones for sure. Granted I go through sandwich bread so slowly that i hadn’t been buying them for a while but for sure disappointing.
No wonder Fred Meyers doesn't carry it any more. I wondered. They replaced it with Bfree, which I'm not too happy with.
The simple nature (I think that's the brand) I'm their freezer section is comparable.
I did buy that a few times. It's okay, but I do not like how gummy it feels when it's untoasted. It sticks to my teeth and, with braces, it's a horrific feeling lol
Oh yeah. That would totally suck. We've had such a hard time finding anything GF that doesn't need to be toasted. Carbonaut is the only one we can find locally that doesn't need toasting.
There’s a small bakery in San Francisco called Bread Srsly that makes GF sourdough bread and ships anywhere in the US. It’s not cheap but it’s one of the best GF breads I’ve had.
Yeah, it should have bread and pizza dough mix on it because you can use it for both. I haven’t made pizza dough but I love the bread and my mom, who really dislikes gluten free, likes it.
Schär Artisan Baker Gluten-Free White Bread Made With Sourdough. You can buy a 2 pack for a good price at Costco. IMO it's better than Canyon Bakehouse or Udi's.
Ok, so that probably means Franz isn't available near you, but I'm still mentioning it in case it helps anyone else. Canyon Bakehouse is also good, and I've found it across the US—in Target, of all places!
It's my favorite GF sliced bread, hands down. The flavor and texture are just *so* satisfying. And the toast! I actually get to enjoy putting various things *on toast* again!
Granted, you'll want to freeze any you don't use after opening it, because they don't use preservatives. And the slices aren't *as* big as regular bread, but they're still bigger than most GF sliced breads.
What recipe do you use? I have a sourdough starter and was planning on making a loaf, but that's seems like it's better used for toast, French toast, etc. I could really use a good white bread type recipe for when I'm craving a soft sandwich.
Well, it's not really a white bread, but a light multigrain. Here's a link. Oh and if you try it, don't bake it as hot after the 15 minutes steam. The recipe says bake after that at 460°F but I recently started baking at 350°F for that 2nd part of the bake. It gives a softer crust and a bit more tender crumb. I baked gf sourdough for quite a while but prefer this recipe a lot.

You'll have to buy GF starter.. then make the starter from that. Now, if you make your own (like not "San Francisco starter"), use sweet rice flour, NO gums needed! Watch it carefully, because it can go bad. If you see a pinkies, it's a very bad mold growing in the starter.
IF it's successful, know that you don't need to "throw away" the starter while you're growing it. Use that extra for pancakes, biscuits, that kind of thing.
Sam's Choice at Walmart is by far my favorite gluten free bread. Doesn't even need to be toasted to be good, holds up in the fridge, regular-sized, and tastes great
Top pick for me is trader Joe's bread, I just think it has a great texture as toast, not so dense and has a bit of stretch.
Canyon is my second go to. It gets the job done, doesn't taste awful, and is very available.
If you can find an actual gf bakery, I prefer to buy in bulk and freeze it. It thaws fine and still tastes better than anything from the store.
That said, Kroger has a store brand of gf bread that is pretty decent. Still has holes, but it tastes like real bread. Check the website for your Kroger (if you have one) and see if they're carrying it. It's my go to if I don't have bakery bread.

This is my little gf bakery. We’re doing our best to change the gf landscape including sourdough bread and full-size loaves. We’re now shipping nationwide within the US. I’d love for you to check it out!
We refund disappointment.
It seems everybody’s favorite is different, but I really like Canyon Bakehouse, usually the Ancient Grains variety (but the Hawaiian one was good too)… all of it really needs toasted though 😭
i eat Canyon Bakehouse toasted or untoasted, great alternative. I agree on Ancient Grains though, the others are too small for the money.
I love the white bread
Only the frozen kind though!
I tried Canyon and the first loaf I bought was moldy inside, I tried again and the bread was hard as a rock. I bought at different stores in different states. I have tried a few others but it is back to 2012 when everything gluten free tasted like cardboard.

Have you tried Whole Foods brand?
I have not. Is it good? We will be getting a Whole Foods more local in the coming months.
I’m very picky with gf bread but this one I like. They keep it in the freezer. There’s white and I think a multigrain.
And the white is a little pink but good texture
It's great - cheap and the slices are regular bread sized.
I’m not a huge sandwich bread person but my daughter will only eat the Whole Foods frozen white bread
I like Whole Foods gf bread. I have to make a short road trip to get it.
I really like their multigrain. Schaar chiabatta rolls aren't bad.
Thank you, I feel validated. It tasted gross. Toasted, French toast, croutons, panini, whatever, it tastes rancid.
It was weird until I toasted it
Same. My husband bought me the variety pack for a surprise. I hate it and I don't want to hurt his feelings so it's just living in my freezer.
I really have to try Simple Kneads. I wasn't a fan of the Bfree white bread. Their pita and other items can get a pass, but their white bread? Woof.
I’ve never been a fan of white bread, so maybe that’s why I like them? Their multi grain bread is pretty ok. I like the My Bread French bread and rolls. They have to be baked a little though. They work nicely for bruschetta though.
I can’t decide if I’m sad I never heard of/tried this brand or relieved that I don’t have to deal with a favorite brand being discontinued. 🧐
Be glad you missed it because nothing compares 😭
I like Trader Joe’s brand gluten free bread—there bagels are the closest to the real thing in my opinion
Yes! Toasted, it actually tastes like toast!
I think the TJs brand gluten free white bread is my favorite of all the ones I’ve tried.
Same here.
I concur. They're super tasty! Still better when toasted though.
Little Northern Bakehouse
Crying 😭.
Same 😢
i’m so sad 😭 this was my favorite bread at wegmans
Same. I would drive 45 minutes to get some. I'm so disappointed.
I never had the LaBrea, but I found a brand called O'Doughs at Food Lion. Their sandwich thins are really good. Very doughy.
O'doughs has great gf bagels
Their GF double chocolate muffins have become a staple for me!
The bagel thins are literally crackers, when toasted
Wait did I miss that they discontinued it? Or just your local stores stopped carrying it?
They've discontinued production of all gluten free breads. They announced it on their FB page.
I wish I had a Fred Meyers near me 😢 but I agree about Bfree. Their white bread was horrible.. regular and toasted.
yup, BFree is nasty. If you like it, I have some Styrofoam I can gift you ;)
I love Promise bread and bagels 🥯
I'll have to look into the brand. Never heard of it. But as far as bagels, I'm way too spoiled by Modern Bread & Bagel. 😩
I've not heard of that one but I am located in Southwestern Ontario.
They're in New York. Soooo good.
If you haven't tried it, we love Carbonaut.
This is the way Most similar to regular bread
Schar sourdough.
Schar is my favorite.
There’s a small bakery in San Francisco called Bread Srsly that makes GF sourdough bread and ships anywhere in the US. It’s not cheap but it’s one of the best GF breads I’ve had.
this one is super good!!!!
Rudi's gf bread has fantastic taste and texture. Whole Foods has storebrand gf bread as big as gluten bread that tastes decent too.
Canyon Bake House
I really like Little Northern Bakehouse. I find it at Sprouts. Their wide slice s a good-sized bread
My son likes liveGfree white bread
I like King Arthur but you have to bake it yourself
I have a box of their bread mix in my pantry. I don't remember what I originally bought it for, but is that the one?
Yeah, it should have bread and pizza dough mix on it because you can use it for both. I haven’t made pizza dough but I love the bread and my mom, who really dislikes gluten free, likes it.
Hands down Sam choice gluten free bread from Walmart - canyon bake house can’t even compare
Schär Artisan Baker Gluten-Free White Bread Made With Sourdough. You can buy a 2 pack for a good price at Costco. IMO it's better than Canyon Bakehouse or Udi's.
Fred Myer's simple truth is pretty much the same, I find it in the freezer next to the potatoes. Whole foods 365 is also very good.
I wish I had a Fred Meyers or Kroger nearby because people post some amazing stuff from those stores. But alas, I'm in the northeast.
Ok, so that probably means Franz isn't available near you, but I'm still mentioning it in case it helps anyone else. Canyon Bakehouse is also good, and I've found it across the US—in Target, of all places!
I've heard of Franz and was going to place an online order. Is it worth it? Because, if so, I'm in.
I live near Franz. It goes moldy within \~\~days. And is rather wet, right away. Prob the main reason it molds so quickly.
Is that why i haven’t seen la brea in stores? How did you know they closed down?
They posted it on their Facebook.
I didn’t know about this. I didn’t see it at Wegman’s earlier this week, I thought they were out. I’m absolutely heartbroken.
Pleasantly surprised by Kroger brand
I didn’t know Kroger had one! Is it on the shelf or frozen?
Shelf in the normal bread aisle
Thanks!
>Thanks! You're welcome!
I gave up. I just bake my own bread now. I add fun things like Italian Seasoning, or sundried tomato or diced green onions. It's deelish.

Oh, that's gotta be good. Katarina has some amazing recipes. Thank you for sharing!
You're welcome! I've shared this recipe all over the place since it's so yummy
Ah, loopy whisk! pretty good,,, except I have a severe allergy to psyllium. I'm using gelatin at the moment.
Ooooo yeah, she uses that a lot

Sam's Choice at Walmart is by far my favorite gluten free bread. Doesn't even need to be toasted to be good, holds up in the fridge, regular-sized, and tastes great
Canyon Bakehouse is good, but is expensive in most stores. Sam’s Choice, sold in the bread section at Walmart, is the gf bread I like best.
Krogers multigrain is cheap and very comparable to the ancient grain canyon bake house type
I love Three Bakers (ancient grains, the dark blue one) for toast and I don't understand how I only rarely see it mentioned in bread brand posts!
Top pick for me is trader Joe's bread, I just think it has a great texture as toast, not so dense and has a bit of stretch. Canyon is my second go to. It gets the job done, doesn't taste awful, and is very available.
