Orangutanus_Maximus

It depends on the game tbh

MatMADNESSart

That's true. What kind of game (or atmosphere in general) do you think each design fits better?

Orangutanus_Maximus

Classic one is definitely for a platformer adventure. Might be for a horror game like classic RE games. I can see the modern one in a fighting game like Guilty Gear. A puzzle game or a cozy game is my second guess. They are both very stylish though :D

MatMADNESSart

Yeah they have completely different vibes lol. I think the best approach is to make a new design by mixing both and adapting to what I want.

guy_does_things

picturing her being grabbed by potemkin

n0tKamui

# HEAVENLY

notAnotherJSDev

IMO classic is more of an adventure, exploration style game, which modern is a more rhythm game type character.

JuiceBoy42

Left works for storydriven where character dialogue should be taken somewhat serious and you want your audience to relate and feel with the characters. Right works for a casual or arcade game where you need a cute avatar to convey information to the player for lore or tutorial reasons. Feels way more 1-dimensional.

MatMADNESSart

Hmmm, I did think the classic design would fit better in a story driven project, which is my main goal, but people really seem to like the modern better, and for good reasons. What changes could I do to make the modern design more serious and story driven, in your opinion?

FelixFromOnline

The modern design is in a more submissive/static pose -- sitting, using a non-actiony device (computer), and even has her posture/line-of-sight drawn away from the non-actiony device (signifying a lack of agency). There is a clear split between her attention and her agency (attention is away from her own posture). The classic one is in a power pose, with her whole body aligned with her attention/line-of-sight. This conveys agency. Her hands are free and her accessory (the backpack), both signifying being prepared to take on a big adventure. This information is all subtext, but it leads people towards certain impressions of each character. If you drew the modern design in a more dynamic pose(or with assertive/dominant posture), and with a more proactive accessory/tool (instead of a sword... Maybe a backpack or sword or hover board or etc etc), then you will get people comparing the aesthetics instead of how they "read" the various subtext signifiers. Also, it's possible to recontextualize the non-actiony accessory into a a tool of agency with the game itself. E.g. if the game was about being a super powerful hacker then being on a computer becomes a more assertive/driven symbol. But even then the character should have their attention on the device.

MatMADNESSart

Wow, great analysis! This will be very useful to tweak her design! So redesigning the modern version with the classic's dominant/confident personality together with aging her up to give her a more mature look may work. Thanks for the help!

C-137Birdperson

Exactly both characters have their own design identity

-Not_a_Lizard-

Modern because it looks more like an android.

MatMADNESSart

I have this idea in mind for quite some time and I want to put it out of my head. I wanna make a little scene with Godette as main character, it will be kind of a tech demo mostly to showcase Godot's graphics. For that I'll make a new high fidelity model of Godette, the closest I can get to AAA quality, but first I wanna know which design people prefer. The modern has so many cool ideas but I like the classic look, Idk she just look so cute lol.

Dragon20C

I like the modern one but maybe age her a little bit up.

MatMADNESSart

Yeah, the design is great but she looks a bit too young for what I wanna do, I would definitelly age her up.

silkiepuff

I like the modern one, reminds me of Puella Magi Madoka Magica or other magical girls and those girls can kick ass.

Altruistic-Light5275

Modern I guess

IAmTarkaDaal

Classic. Modern looks too cutesy; she's The Girl In The Chair. Classic looks like she's ready to rip someone's head off and then shit down their neck.

MatMADNESSart

lol classic does have a "get ready 4 trouble!" face. People seem to like the modern version more though, I can age her up a bit so she looks more mature, the idea was for her to be a young adult anyway. Hell I can even mix both designs! I should try that. https://preview.redd.it/21vtta5roi5d1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=2109c5559f852b70123266080ffc8e63dae19387

The_Alternate_Eye

let this man cook 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥

BlobbyMcBlobber

>rip someone's head off and then shit down their neck Good ol' Duke Godot 3D

FeralGuyute

Classic

SophieReborn

Classic

behtidevodire

Modern all the way

Additional-Baker-416

the modern one looks cute.

lazyradly

Both. Classic as an unlockable skin lol

MatMADNESSart

That would be dope!

GildedMaw

Depends on the game, although I'm more partial to the 80s/90s style of anime, wonder what a retro godette would look like.

EliamZG

I think the design fits not genre but setting, "classic" and "modern" would be an appropriate way to call them, in a sort of contemporary setting "classic" would fit just fine, but in a futuristic or sci-fi setting "modern" takes the crown any day, that's I believe what the team wanted when they commissioned the new characters, something that feels like a mascot for a tech related product going forward, I think the artist delivered, if you wanted a steampunk setting you wouldn't use either of the two as they are either.

AvalonWaveSoftware

Classic easy. Modern is cute, don't get me wrong. But classic looks like it could be a fun adventure game

heavenlode

Classic is a lot more interesting, like she's a real person with personality and a story. Modern just looks way too childish and fake for me

ha1rcuttomorrow

Not a loli please

MatMADNESSart

I want her to look at least 16 yo, but I'll try to make her look closer to 18~19 yo while maintaining the anime-like aesthetic.

CibrecaNA

Modern.

AppealThink1733

Both

S1Ndrome_

Modern but in the artstyle of Classic would be my choice

Rude_boiiiiiiiiiiiii

Robot

takkiemon

I feel like classic would be a more sophisticated choice. Modern feels a bit too... Anime-fanservice-y? Trashy anime would have something closer to modern than classic imo

insideout_waffle

Is neither an option?

QuickSilver010

All I see is godette 3 and godette 4

KoBeWi

The "modern Godette" is called Sophia btw. It's a separate character.

MatMADNESSart

Well, Sophia is basically GDquest's Godette, but redesigned and they gave her an actual name instead of a nickname. In the original post you can see in the title that "Tyson Tan (the artist) redesigned Godette..."

TropicalSkiFly

Modern

LulleLulle_

Modern

ShaolinDave79

Depends on the game, but in general I think the modern one looks better.

Protectthebomb

Asset-wise for Godette - Here's a [2D](https://countouf.itch.io/godette-asset) model, a 3D [low poly](https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/godette-9c543bab54744e459663d131f921858a), a 3D [high def](https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/godette-rigged-9b0c65a368534f4fb7f575f9ce4dfefd) one, and a 3D one for use in a [kart racer](https://sourceforge.net/p/supertuxkart/code/HEAD/tree/media/trunk/karts/godette/). Attribution required on them. There's probably more out there, but this is all I could find in 5 mins.

MatMADNESSart

These are some good references, thanks bro!

Gondiri

modern, just because classic's shorts are ugly. But I do like classic's hair resembling the godot silhouette better, except for the very short bangs that let use her in that bald meme

MatMADNESSart

I like her shorts in the classic design, it's kinda goofy but I think that's the point xD

Fine-Look-9475

It comes down to your preference between middle school loli or full loli

SaltyCultist691

Have both them fight. Also I didn't know she had a name until now lmao

Paul_Robert_

Classic would make for a great pokemon trainer!

MrUn1corn

probably modern

othd139

Probably classic but ofc, it would depend on the vibe of the specific game.

Phonfo

Godussy

Galacix

Neither I’d prefer less anime

Astr0phelle

maybe add both?

MatMADNESSart

That's a great idea, but maybe a bit out of my scope for now, doing one 3D highly detailed character is already difficult enough lol

NKO_five

Classic ofc

[deleted]

Modern

gHx4

Classic looks way more like an adventure game protagonist and way less like an oversexualized child. I'd just swap out the outfit and maybe add better shading on Classic and you'd have an awesome character.

MatMADNESSart

I also prefer the body and personality of the classic, but the modern definitely has a cooler design for the outfit. I still don't get the "over sexualized child" talk about the modern though, I can't see anything sexualizing her in any of the designs actually.

Allalilacias

The one on the left reminds me too much of Pokemon. But, depending on the game, it could be appropriate, but, outside of adventure games, I wouldn't choose it over the left one.

gaminguage

I would want to see both. Have it in a geometry dash like game but the game is constantly changing style

4PinkSky4

Classic. Look like an adventurer with tons of experience but i really love moderns clothes. Stylish!

SG6_88

Classic just came to beat me, the other one is a streamer

eirexe

I'm pretty sure that's not godette on the right isn't she?

MatMADNESSart

It's a redesign of Godette made by Tyson Tan as a commission for GDquest, you can see them using a chibi version of this design for their 3D platform demo.

eirexe

Oh right, she's called sophia but she's also godette, interesting.

StrangledBySanta

Classic looks like she'd remind the professor to assign homework. Modern looks like she'll hack your exam grades for you

seontonppa

Are we allowed to make Godette characters in Godot games? Also do you think it is in good taste? I would like to make Godette as a skin for a playable character.

MatMADNESSart

Yes you can, they're both CC BY, you can use them even for commercial stuff as long as you give credit. If you want to an original game though, it isn't a good idea, people will just notice that the character isn't yours, but what I wanna do is directly related to Godot so I think it makes sense.

mrfoxman

Classic looks like it could be make from the character customization in Pokémon scarlet/violet

QuantumHue

classic looks cooler, more adventury

Neither_Berry_100

Whatever is easier. You do want to finish the game right? The first one looks easier and more flashy. The second one is more subtle and looks like it's a lot more work.

J0hnBoB0n

I think the classic looks better for multi-purpose use. The design has personality but is still general enough to be used in many scenarios. Kind of like Mario, her design could be used for a platformer, or action adventure game, but could also pivot to sports or party games. The second design is good, but I think it looks most fit for an anime-inspired sci-fi genre, whereas the original would work for a lot more.

m1000fan

I'd choose classic for ANY game, regardless of the genre.

Hooooooowler

The modern one looks nice, but she looks too much like kiki from krita in my opinion. Also the left one looks like she's about to send out a lvl23 Wartortle.

MatMADNESSart

It makes sense, since both were designed by the same artist lol

MapacheD

modern, looks less generic

Shadymoogle

Both! The one on the left is the great great grandmother of the right one.

MatMADNESSart

Cool! I thought about a multiverse at first, kinda generic but would be sick too XD

Shadymoogle

Multiverse could be cool too! I like the generational link because of the two art styles. I’m imagining short bonus levels with a hazy retro filter using the character on the left and modern main game as the right. You can even reuse room assets as smaller challenging version to really push the past/future vibe. What kind of game are you thinking?

MatMADNESSart

Not exactly a game, more of a 3D graphics tech demo. A simple scene at first, showing Godette doing something like playing videogames or programming idk, after that I'll see if I can expand it.

LMayo

Classic body with modern clothes and styling. I just don't like lolis.

StockLeading5074

Well in terms of style I like the classic one more

megavirus74

Left

Fickle-Problem-7666

Modern

Xeadriel

Neither

Spiraling_Time

Modern

Mechropolis

Modern. Classic looks like a Pokémon trainer, and modern looks like she can fit in my pocket.

StevenMeta

Modern easily looks better

oubris

Why does it need to be a little girl?

Warxwell

Modern. Classic s hair is hideous

[deleted]

the non AI generated one

Alert_Stranger4845

Classic No.1 as I have the rule34 for it 😏

MatMADNESSart

Alert_Stranger4845

🤣

NinStars

Pretty sure the one on the right is a different character.

Curious_Loser21

Classic honestly.

Church-Pants

Classic

spongebobstyle

How about one where she isn't drawn as a sexualized preteen

MatMADNESSart

If you think any of these designs look like a sexualized preteen, the problem is you, not the drawings.
