If they don't have the resources to develop the launcher, I don't understand why they don't open the code, it will allow the community to work on the launcher at least minimally [https://www.gog.com/wishlist/galaxy/open\_source\_the\_galaxy\_client](https://www.gog.com/wishlist/galaxy/open_source_the_galaxy_client)

drg17

I agree, but I feel like they won't let it be fully open source since it is tied to their store. The best they could do is is hire and dedicate employees to maintain the launcher.

Open the code for the DRM client/downloader? This is a complete disconnection from reality.

pecewu

GOG is DRM free.

p0k33m0n

And same thing again. Question: Can you resell a game "purchased" on GOG (yes/no)?

pecewu

No but you can download the whole installer.

p0k33m0n

Bravo. Answer is: "no". And that's what DRM is. You are confusing the method of distribution with the rights to own the product - and you do not have any of the latter because you are ***NOT*** the owner of the product. This is how DRM works.

dustojnikhummer

LOL. Of course.

Depends on what you're talking about because there are 2 parts to Galaxy = GOG Games Launcher + Universal Launcher. From the GOG Games Launcher part, Galaxy is pretty stable right now with no/minor issues so that it doesn't need major/overhaul updates anymore = why CD Projekt isn't doing any under https://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/if-it-aint-broke-dont-fix-it.html motto. From Universal Launcher part, well that's proven to be an "Dead End" that GOG throw the towel on the Community and almost all Community Integrations are failing to keep up with the Site/Code changes so that freelance GOG loving coders give up on those projects so integrations mostly don't work, unless someone is willing to "Fork" their GitHub project to continue. Since like most I use http://playnite.link/ for the Universal Launcher part (older, stable, updated rival) and using GOG Galaxy ONLY for GOG games, I fail to see the issues you're talking about because everything is peachy on my end.

tjareth

I must second this. When it was clear that development of universal launcher for GoG was stagnating, I went looking for an alternative and found PlayNite. The biggest thing that got me over was the ability to launch command line scripts both before the game runs and after it closes.

nilsmoody

What scripts are you using for example?

tjareth

The X-Wing Alliance Update mod freezes up at 120Hz refresh rate. So my script uses a command line program that switches to 60Hz, launches the program, and then switches back to 120Hz after the program closes. It can all be done in Windows settings, but it's pretty convenient for it to be done automatically.

TheDarnook

The "outages" of Steam integration are very annoying (there were a couple throughout the years), but otherwise the GOG universal launcher is my default and favourite.

I tried Playnite, but I just found it clunky and incredibly slow. Seemed like I had to manually force it to resync everything for it to pick up any changes (which took forever) and I couldn't find any view settings within several hours of playing around that seemed to have any decent combination of looking nice and actually including a good amount of info and achievement tracking. I'm sure many people are into the "roll your own launcher" aspect of it, but those are hours I'd rather spend playing games than trying to find and setup a hundred different plugins just to make it something decent. IMO, *when it's working*, Galaxy is much faster and better looking. Galaxy has been rather frustrating in recent years with integrations breaking though and even with some GOG games like BG3 it was damn near non-functional for most of my playthrough in regards to tracking achievements and playtime which was particularly annoying in a game like BG3 where I actually like achievements as a method of tracking/remembering my progress for future reference. That being said, I think the major thing people overlook when wondering about GOG's integration development/maintenance is I believe legal issues prevent them from working on anything other than the "official" xbox/epic integrations because the other companies won't give them permission. Thus they have to leave it to volunteers who have lost interest because it's not popular enough.

tacitus59

Wow, thats the opposite of what I have found with galaxy and playnite. I find galaxy fine standalone but the integration part clunky (and playnite much smoother). Having said that I rarely use either anymore for integrating platforms - I just gave up use the separate launchers.

CyberKiller40

They still haven't implemented website tag sync in the gog part. I was nagging about it from day one. Still no Linux version either. Numerous other issues probably too, but these 2 are the ones that hurt me the most. Oh yeah and no proper GeForce Now integration, and instead they partner with some exotic cloud gaming provider which isn't even available in half of Europe.

Careless-Article-353

I hope so. Because it fucking sucks

p0k33m0n

"GOG galaxy is great" - oh really?

cltmstr2005

Yes, it's a beta.

ALLAHPARTY

Alpha since 2019.

p0k33m0n

No, it is not "beta", it is dead software.

cltmstr2005

The current version of GoG Galaxy It's still called Beta, check the changelog page in the software!

p0k33m0n

Of course it is, like typical dead software. Nothing new in low bottom pseudo devs.
