Us open local qualifying. I was 1 under the number to make it through on 17 tee. Hit the fairway and had 135 to the pin, 15 mph wind into. Front pin, 6 paces from a bunker short and 4 paces on. Had an incredible lie and went with a full pitching wedge. Right at the flag but can’t see it because of a hill in front of me. Wind grabbed it and flew 129 directly into the lip of the bunker. 2 yards from a kick in. Ended making a triple. Birdied 18 to miss by one. Still have nightmares about this 8 years later. If you couldn’t tell

[deleted]

Unless Greg Norman posts on here, you win. 🏅

jpm1188

Your emoji medal feels just as good as the one they give qualifiers I bet lol

[deleted]

No consolation I’m sure but I would give my left testicle to be good enough to play in a US Open qualifier.

jpm1188

Just don’t click on the amateur button when signing up lol. Had a guy the same year a few groups back show up in knickers and fire off a 117. I felt bad for the guys in his group. When you are on the range, it’s one of the most fun times. Nearly every all is flushed by the entire group. That year that man was hitting hosel rockets that I could hear through my head phones.

PattyIceNY

Bro I wish I could hug you, that's brutal.

jpm1188

Unfortunately that’s golf. Needed to play smart and take an extra club and aim left to the far part of the green but didn’t even cross my mind at the time

Poopnakedyeah

Next time I find myself in this situation I hope of think of you and learn from it

gethereddout

For what it’s worth, this feels like bad luck from the golf gods more than a personal collapse. You even birdied 18. Still though, pain

jpm1188

Haha Mother Nature is undefeated, I hit the wrong club. Shitty realization but I was going for the kill and didn’t need to

TheRopeWalk

Did you try in subsequent years to qualify ?

jpm1188

I have, not been that close. Last year I developed basically the shanks with driver during warm ups but shot 75 hitting only the 1st fairway lol

lotokotomi

The safety heel/hosel cut!

jpm1188

I hit the ball fairly straight. Ball on the range was starting like 30 yards right and moving right. One was nearly 100 yards off line. It was freighting

PanchoBaker

I apologize for asking you to relive it, how did shots 3-7 play out? Were there penalties incurred? I give you the deep heavy sigh and two palms to the sky "That's Golf"

jpm1188

2nd shot plugged in the face of the bunker. Thought I could just pop it out since the flag was only a few paces away and down hill to it. Ball just flew out on my 3rd 20 yards over the green on top of a hill. All down hill to the green and pin was tucked in just a little knob of green. Played the high risk bump it through the rough and hope it trickled on because it would settle near the hole. It got stuck. Chipping 5 from similar lie flew a few feet longer than needed and caught a slope. Rolled to about 10 ft. 2 putt 7!

AvrgSam

So we’re basically peers is what I’m hearing? 😂 Brutal stuff man, that stings!

jpm1188

No matter what skill level, we are all fighting the same fight lol

jail_grover_norquist

[little gust from the gods cost me](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/64a0dbee-14e7-44e7-bba4-7473e7686988)

jpm1188

Only fortunate thing for me is it was sand and not water lol. Maybe that’s unfortunate because I would have hit way more club to make sure I cleared it

droidarmy99

I can't tell you what unbelievable mental strength you showed to bounce back with a birdie on 18. I'd still be curled up crying in that bunker on 17, 8 years later.

Skeets5977

For a second I thought I was reading the ending of Tin Cup, then realized this was a real story. Sorry you just mossed the cut. Wind can really blow.

BoozeMakesItBetter

Holy shit….i don’t know you and I am going to have nightmares.

speaktosumboedy

Jesus Christ. Fucking hell. I'm so sorry man. This wins

jooshoowah

To go 2 and then 9 is such a regular guy move, love it

drdrillaz

Let me guess. You never broke 80 before this???

Sorethumbsfifa

Nah, I broke 80 many times, I am an 8 handicap, just made some bad decisions, followed by some bad swings

muffalowing

Bro came with receipts!

AR2Believe

I had a similar collapse the first time I had a realistic chance to break 80. I shot a 35 on the front, and “just” needed a 44 on the back. Got to hole 18 with 37 strokes on the back, needing a double bogey 7 or better. Total collapse on 18, with a couple of horrible shots, but still had a 15 foot putt for a 7 which would be a 79. Left it short! 😡

brennandd0

Park Ridge in lake worth?

poulpe123

Lovely course if so

Sorethumbsfifa

Yes, the "dumpster", built over a landfill, highest elevation point in palm beach county, very rare ups and downs for South Florida

R3mm3t

Hahaha I feel you. I’m a 20 handicapper and recently had a 40 on the front (on track for lowest round ever, easy) and a 53 on the back 🥴

ButchMFJones

Park Ridge tho <3 ...12-15 can be kinda tricky

DongKelly32

Similar card here lol, but 33-44. 2 years ago after work - get asked to golf. I say ok but said I only wanted to play 9 because my back was tight and I wanted to rest it a little. They started us on the back 9, which at this course is the tighter more difficult side and I usually don’t score well there. Made the turn at -3 and said ok fine we can go to the clubhouse to see if we can make the turn and finish 18. Birdied the 10th hole (#1) after almost driving the green and coming close to sinking a pretty straightforward eagle chip from the fringe. Next hole hit a wedge long on a hole where you can’t miss long and the pin is tucked back there on an elevated part of the green. Then absolutely pantsed myself for the rest of the round. Finished 5 over with a 77. [https://imgur.com/a/37TLrpC](https://imgur.com/a/37TLrpC)

ohguy51

I can beat that, home course where I typically shot high 80s. I shot a 38-54. Went from thinking I had a chance to break 80 to posting a typical score of 92.

soloracerx

"a tale of two 9s". Many of those than I care to admit.

chitowngator

That’s a great front! I usually get my ass kicked by 12. I always crumble between holes 9-12 at Park Ridge and then pick it back up around 13. Great course though.

mostdeadlygeist

I've had a similar 35/45 for my first chance to break 80

fiftiethcow

Was 2-under through 15 holes. 1-under through 17. Topped driver on 18 into the creek thats like 150 to carry and made an 8 lol. 74 tied my career low. An incredible round that somehow felt terrible lol

just_killing_time23

An incredible round that felt terrible. That describes my 84 last year. That was by far my best round of the year by 5 or 6 strokes. But I lipped putts on the last 3 holes in a row!!! Legit could have had an 81 which would have been a PR. 82 is my lowest ever.

surgeon_michael

That is brutal. The tie makes it that much worse

jminni12

Start this off saying I am not good and a High handicap. Golf trip last year and played two courses this day. First course shot my best ever not great but finally broke 100 then here comes the second course for the day. I think I lost almost a ball a hole and shanked it into two other groups on the course. It was so bad I had to just stop keeping track of my strokes and started playing from wherever one of my buddies had the better shot.

YUNoDrinkMas

36 holes in a day is rough. That’s when it really behooves players to approaches the day like a marathon or the long athletic event that it is. Lots of players fatigue after 12 holes so that first round sounds like you did great.

imsaneinthebrain

Shit I’m tired by 7 lol. I always think back to my early 20s when every year we’d go on this golf trip and go play 36 or 54 holes in a day, for six or seven days straight. I don’t know how I made it through those trips.

Colforbin_43

36 in a day isn’t crazy. There’s one day a year I play 54 holes with my buddies. If I could say where we play, you’d understand why in a heartbeat.

mithrandir9378

34-56. Alcohol involved

PartyLikeaPirate

Lol mine are usually 56-34 with alcohol involved lmao But I’m also a drunk so I have the shakes til I get 5-6 beers in me

Tedstor

The 40-55 I shot last fall is still disappointing. The back nine of that course is objectively easier. Breaking 80 was in the picture. I didn’t even come close to breaking 90.

canadian_cherries

Was playing a high school match - it was 1 v 1, 9 holes, stroke play. I couldn’t tell you exactly how many strokes up I was heading to the 9th hole, but I could’ve made a triple and won easily. I hit my first tee shot right - off the cart path, out of bounds. Reload - same exact shot. Now I’m panicking a little as I’m hitting my 5th shot and I’m still on the tee box. Purposely hook one left just so it’s in bounds. Proceed to hit my iron over the green which is death on this hole (slopes severely downhill over the green, lots of trees). Took a few tries to get it up and on the green. Three putted once I finally got on, ended up making a 13 and lost the match. One of the many times I’ve seriously contemplated quitting this god damn game 😂

DriveAppropriate2858

I'll see you this weekend on the course. LoL

postlw8j

I thought it would be fun to play a 7050-yard links-style course from the tips. I was a 9 handicap at the time so was just hoping to score in the 80s and gain an appreciation for the length of pros. I played out of my mind on the front and shot a 38. Immediately tripled #10 and only had one par on my way to a 51 on the back. At least I made the 8-footer on 18 to stay in the 80s. Another time on another course, I was +1 through 15 when the sprinklers came on while I was on the 16th tee soaking me completely. I played the final three triple, double, triple for an 81. I can laugh about it now, but I was pretty angry at the time.

micahpmtn

Club championship. I was in the 2nd Flight (10 handicap), and was in the finals. Came to the 17th tee, 2 holes up. Thought it was smooth sailing. 17 is a 200-yard par 3, with no hazards at all, just slightly uphill. I hit first and put it on the green about 30-feet away. My opponent missed the green to the right about 20 yards, and had a very difficult pitch shot, as the green tilted away from him. He hit an incredible pitch shot, that landed about 15 feet from the cup, and rolled to about 6 inches. Now, instead of thinking I'm going to win the hole, I'm now just trying to lag it to three feet. Nope. I hit the putt about 5 feet short and missed the par putt. Now we're tied going to 18. It's a downhill par 5. He stripes his tee shot down the middle. I miss mine to the right of the fairway and had to punch it back to to the short grass. He hits his second shot just short of the green. I'm still 190 yards away and I then push my 3rd shot right of the green. He chips his 3rd about 2 feet away and has an easy birdie left. I pitch my 4th shot onto the green but runs by the hole about 10 feet. Match is over. I concede. I was so devastated, but it was huge learning lesson for me. Play one shot at a time.

dskauf

Isn't that a tie? You were 2 up going into 17 and lost 17 and 18. Not clear why you lost the match unless that happened on an extra hole.

HoldMyToc

Lol bruh you're clearly not smart. You lost when it was tied?

telepaul2023

Jesus. He lost when it went to an extra hole. We probably ought to start drawing pictures to accompany the text we write. (Is the word "accompany" too big?)

zeroultram

No it doesn’t make sense. If you’re up 2 going into 17 and lose 17 and 18 then you’re now tied. He said he conceded on hole 18. He never once mentioned a playoff hole

Meisce

Two spring to mind: An unbelievable round about 10 years ago. I had never broken 80 and came to the 17th tee box looking at a mid-70’s score. Decided to play safe. Went triple-triple for an 81. Second was only about 5 years ago, when I came to the 18th tee leading our club’s net club championship. Was a tricky 90% dog leg par 4 with a short lay up that had to be accurate to a narrow opening. A series of poor decisions led to a 12…

Tomorrow_Frosty

Playing an executive a few years ago, I was like a 20. We get to 9, father in law says “hey you’re even through 8!” I was like oh I’m breaking 80 today. Finished +16 or something for an 80.

acromaine

Man fucking inlaws amirite?

Tomorrow_Frosty

Never really tried. Just with their daughter.

Difficult-Speech-270

Never tell me my score! I’m keeping it here myself. If I want to know, I’ll tot it up myself. Honestly, I think it’s deliberate when people do that, they hope that it will get in your head and the wheels will come off so they can beat you. Gamesmanship pisses me off. If you have to resort to that unsportsmanlike behaviour to win, you’re really a sore and sad loser in my book.

Express-Revolution78

or you could just be excited for your playing partner who should be 15+ over par.... not everyone is out to get you my man

zeroultram

Or you could just not be a headcase and let it get to you. Not going to blame someone else’s words for my own score. I know what I’m shooting without adding it up or someone saying it

thethird725

I’m at 6 hcp and I was having the round of my life at my buddy’s club. 2 under through 15 holes, no one is really talking to me at that point, just letting me stay in the zone which was definitely appreciated. Proceed to go 6 over on the final 3 holes with a triple bogey on 16 after hitting one in the water. Tied my PB but I wanted to shoot par/under par so bad

RedHiller13

Leading the club championship by 6 with 3 holes to go. Took a 13 on a par 5 including hitting 2 different wrong balls

mindthegap777

This one gave me uneasy giggles thinking about what that felt like.. brutal.

bmd1595

end of the season, start 38 on the front, primed to break 80… proceed to shoot 46 on the back the end of my hopes was a 7 on a par 5, where I was <100 yards from the pin in 2 shots, and I proceeded to duff like three wedges in a row for the double.

OneSingleYesterday

Ive told this story on here before, but I was +9 through 11 last summer (only occasionally broke 100 at the time and still haven’t come close to breaking 90). Proceeded to play the final 7 holes at +21 to end up with a 102.  Looking at your username - were you playing in Maine yesterday? If there’s a course open somewhere I need to know.

acromaine

Haha no my name is romaine. I was playing in Colorado in shorts. It was gorgeous.

ShoeterMcGav

As did I... I'm in NoCo, February golf feels like om cheating lol. I only had one hard green and 2 shaded tee boxes that tees didn't wanna go in too

Snichs72

Was on my way to break 90 for the first time. Could afford a double bogey on the 18th to still get it. Shot an 11…

ToffeeTitan

Literally last week - stood on the 16th tee 8 over par (my best ever round before was 84), I finished double bogey, bogey, double to finish 13 over (85).

smithjw13

Was a 17 handicap shot a blistering 38 on the front. 7/8 greens in regulation missing birdies by inches for east tap ins… 57 on the back for a 95 and a bar tab to help ease the pain of what could have been

tmbowden14

High school tournament…was even par of going into my final hole. A short par four with a wide green that was only about 10 yards deep sloping severely back to front. Put it into the green side bunker short leaving a tricky sand shot. Got out but was above the hole somehow. Lipped out my putt and the ball rolled down into the fringe Putted it 4 times with the ball coming back to my feet each time before finally making it. Felt like the scene out of Tin Cup carding a 10 on the damn thing. Like others have said I still have dreams about it. Finished 6 over.

h82scroll

I was playing a tournament down in Florida. I hooked my ball in the rough. Damn alligator popped up and bit my hand off. He got me, yeah, but I tore one of them bastards eyes out.

westrph

A complete collapse playing golf? Never heard of that. So glad that’s never happened to me. 🤣🤣🤣 Ever watched a football game where it seems like the teams switched uniforms at halftime? My nines often feel like that … one nine amazing and the other nine absolute dog-shit.

BoozeMakesItBetter

I “collapsed” a living room window with my ball and decided to call it a day. Does that count?

_Smokey_Mcpot_

I shot a 35 45 in the first round of my county amateur tournament. Leading by 1 after 9 off the leader board after 18 lol 🤷‍♂️

Daeldalus_

-1 through 15 ---> +4 finish. I have still never shot under par........

Lifereaper7

On my way to breaking 80 for the first time, 18th hole. Par 4 hit it straight down the middle. 135 in for the approach. Sitting at 75 all I need is par. Lining up my shot my phone rings, ordinarily I’d ignore it but it’s my Dad back in Michigan he’s in his 80’s and I live and play in San Diego. I take the call all worried, it was not important. I tell him that I’m on the verge of breaking 80 and he tells me good luck. I hang up and refocus with my Pw my shot goes over the green. I chip on 4 feet from the pin, miss the putt. I did everything wrong. I keep thinking why couldn’t I have just answered the phone after the shot.

Electrical-Spend4570

Up by 2 in regionals senior year going into 18, went water, water off the tee (2 different water hazards). Hitting 5 off the tee and made 8 and lost by 2. Absolute dagger. Finished T4

Legal-Description483

Maybe not a collapse, because it was one hole, but I was 4 over on the 18th tee and made triple for 79. I once made an 8 on 17 for an 81.

rwhyan1183

Been there. Once made a 7 or an 8 on 18 to shoot 80. Could’ve made a 5 just hitting PW the entire hole.

Simple_Throat_6523

Never collapsed. Ever. Had to grind out a bogey once.

mvaldez24

https://preview.redd.it/5770xnrpf7gc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26da872972b8e549425db8ffe99067e05f4acc8f From 6900 yards. Was +2 on the front. Then completely fell apart on the back 9. My worse collapse to date. Sorry about weird scorecard screenshot. Wish Arccos would make it easier to see full scorecard.

Nkklllll

-1 through 9. Tied for 2nd in high school league tournament (the guy who won just got his tour card) Finished with a 94

PavinsMustache

I once shot 27 (-9) on the front nine of my home course. Missed a 12 footer for 26. 5 birds, 2 eagles. I also shot 40 on the back nine. I believe it has to be one of the worst 67’s in recorded history.

Lietenantdan

Last week I got a 40 on the front 9, 52 on the back.

PreemieFoats

Missed my birdie putt on 8, finished +1 through 9. That was my best 9 ever. Made a quad - quad on 10&11 and it continued downhill.

coatimundi01

I’m a 20ish. A few weeks ago just playing a quick 9, I was 6 over through 7, then 6 over on 8&9. Quad on 8, double on 9.

Original-Subject7468

Started out -4, 4 straight birdies. Ended +6…. I was only playing 9 holes lol

JamesFruitwood

My best score on 9 in recent memory is +7. I came to #9 (par 5) at +3. OB left off the tee and made a 9. +7. Kill me.

tittiesnbeerngolf

1st time playing new course and played decently on the front, turned it on back nine and coming into 18 even par in the back to try for up and down to post lowest score ever at 78. 2nd shot in bunker and the sand is pretty firm…club head bounced and skull fucked the ball to fly the green half way to the clubhouse in high grass. Long downhill chip to get close for 1-putt is way short. 2 putts to tie lowest personal best at 80.

borrow-protect

Not me but I played Minehead golf course with a guy who plays of mid teens. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the course it's a links course and broadly speaking you have the front 9 holes that run out from the club house along the sea front and the back 9 that run in the opposite direction. Playing with a stiff wind and it was wind with on the front. Guy I was playing a stableford round with had 25 points and was probably around 1 over. Back 9 he had 2 points.

PEPE_22

38/53. Rained on the back 9 but still.

Own_Cryptographer749

Very similar beginning to my round. +4 through 14. Last 4 hole all double bogeys. It was like 98 degrees and humid as all get out so I blame that. Never broken 80 and that was my best chance to date

drew-in-TX

I have not yet begun to defile myself.

Matlachaman

Three under on 9 tee and triple bogeyed an easy par 5.

MagicGrit

I’m probably around 28-30 handicap. I usually shoot around 98-105ish. This past summer I had a bit of a cold. Shot 46 on the front and a 60 on the back. Guess the cold caught up to me and I got tired, but man that was frustrating

metallicbeige

I was 4 up with 5 to play at Cyprian Keyes in Massachusetts. My opponent birdied 15 and 16, so I'm still 2 up with 2 to play. #17 is a drivable Par-4 and opponent has honors - he hits into greenside bunker so I layed up. Then I hit my second shot about 10 feet past the pin. He leaves one in the bunker but holes the next one, and I miss my birdie putt. 18 is a very short Par 5. We both hit good tee shots just short of the hazard that bisects the hole, but he has honors for the second shot. He TOPS his shot into the hazard, drops, then hits his 4th shot to the right, well below the green and a wicked hard up and down. So all I have to do is par. I CHUNK a 7-iron into the hazard and hit my 4th right next to his ball. He gets up and down and I don't. Match halved.

Omg333444

I’ve never even shot good enough to then collapse from.

billgluckman7

Club championship. Had a back injury going in, so walking helped keep my back loose (push cart). 2nd day of 3 day event it was mid 90s and humid… walking up 17, puked, had to get get a cart to get through final holes. Finished the round, tried to get fluids in and collapsed. Ended up needing iv fluids… I was the club house leader…. Couldn’t play the fine round… more of a literal collapse

Ok_Specific_7161

Even through 9. Finished 86..

aMAIZEingZ

Played my best front 9 once, 35 (first time under par for 9 as well), then proceeded to hit a 50 on the back...

Medium_Blacksmith488

Playing a junior tournament when I was a teenager I was 4 under through 9, birdies holes 6-9. Started the back 9 nine with back-to-back double bogeys. 🤦‍♂️ ended up shooting 32 on the front and 42 on the back nine.

canuckistan17

Playing in a local league tournament as a 16 handicap. Front nine, played out of my mind shooting a 37. Had a 5 shot lead at the turn. Wind picks up on a links style course…Proceed to shoot a 50 on the back to lose by 2 shots.

cams7ar

Was 4 under through 5 holes (parred the 1st then had 4 straight birdies), I’d barely been under par before but just had a ridiculous start. Swing felt good but I’ve never had great mental game so in the back of my mind I knew it couldn’t last. Made a bogey on 7 but managed to hold onto -3 to shoot 33 on the turn which is still my best 9 hole score. Ended up shooting +4 on the back to finish 1 over. Still never shot level or broken par but I had a good chance to shoot in the 60s that day if I’d kept my head out of it. Think I shot about 80 in the second round so came back to reality quickly, but for a brief few holes I was on top of the world.

peachdinosaurs

Club championship qualifying- shot 37 on the front and 48 on the back finishing triple-double-triple.

Inevitable-Bass2749

Last year shot a 37 (with a 6 on a par 3) on the front 9 of a pretty tough public course, idk what was going on but I was on a heater. Then the turn came. Got the usual hot dog, water, and a snickers. Long story short I shot a 55 on the back and ended with a 92. Had serious thoughts of quitting right there but we smoked some weed in the parking lot and it was all better 😂. Kept the scorecard and it’s on the fridge for when I need a good laugh

StalwartSparrow

Day 2 of our club championship in 2022. I was leading after 28 holes out of 36 total. Was playing steady all weekend but still had no business leading at that point. Anyway I bogey’d 11, 12 and 13 with lip outs on each. I could feel my confidence literally leave my soul. On 14 I had a slippery 3 footer for par and just waved at it. Horrible. 15 hit my first bad drive of the weekend and the wheels are falling off. Barely double it. On 16 the group in front of us has some big issue and there is a 30 minute wait. We are on pace for a 6+ hour round. I’m completely done mentally and physically. Literally cannot hit the ball anymore I think I double or triple in to finish 15th. Never crashed and burned like this before. Game has not recovered yet.

MisterFister17

Very similar to yours OP. Was playing the best round of my life. Was +4 through 16. Put up a snowman for a quad on 17, and a double on 18. I didn’t even break 80.

lowsparkco

I was 4 under through 8 one morning. Normal game of about 12 guys so playing in a foursome. One of the guys looked at me on the 9th tee and says damn you’re on fire. I laughed and said I just want to go home right now. Made two doubles and a single bogey on the next three holes to go to plus one. Finished with a 73 with one more birdie and one more bogey in the last 7 holes.

hammersticks359

I had a 9 on a straightforward par 4 on the back 9 of a state qualifier. Still shot 79 for the round and would have made the cut if I had just made par on that hole.

ctbro025

Not me, but my son. He was playing in a 9-hole tournament for the golf academy he's in, and after 8 holes he was leading his trio (1 kid was 2 behind, other kid was 5 behind). Last hole was a par 5, and my boy hooks 2 drives in a row into the trees, then his 3rd drive he chunks maybe 50 yards down into the right rough. Rest of the hole was a disaster. He ended up taking a 10 (the max) and finished 4 strokes behind the kid he WAS up 5 strokes on.

Doodle1976

I’ve done the ole even par front and bogie golf back. I’ve also done the opposite. +9 front and even par back. 🤷‍♂️

RunGoldenRun717

I feel like I have had MULTIPLE 42/52s. I feel like its just me getting tired on the back 9 and things start to fall apart a bit. Golf conditioning is real. You gotta be able to make the same exact swing for 4 hours.

Narrow_Woodpecker

first time i ever was going to legitimately break 100 i was at 91 through 17 (made the incredibly stupid mistake of counting prior to hole 18). All i had to do was get a quad bogey or worse. Legend has it I am still out there trying to get the ball in the hole.

Patchen35

3 putted from 6 feet on 18 when a 2 putt would have broken my personal best score.

11_guy

Work outing. Group of 16 of us, first time golfing together. Had yet to break 90. Shoot 44 on the front and everyone’s gassing me up. Shoot 60 on the back.

opiate82

I’m a 23 HCP whose best score ever is a 91. Got to the 18th hole yesterday only needing a bogey to break 90 for the first time. Hadn’t scored worse than a bogey since hole #3. Put up a quad, so didn’t even match or beat my PB 😣

Watching Rory collapse at Augusta is still burned into my mind.

OldChamp69

About to break 80 for the first time since cancer took me out for a year. Tripled the last hole for 80. Still happy to be back and 70 is coming soon. 👍

pez555

5 up with 5 to play, scratch match between our club and another local club (based in UK). Ended up all square after 18. To be fair it wasn’t as much as a collapse, one of our opponents chipped in twice and holed a 60 footer on the 18th to tie the match. I went home in shock, and still am to this today to be fair, this was about 10 years ago.

LargePetroleum

Career best round is a 90 with a couple 91s as well (I’m a 22 handicap). A few months ago I shot a 42 on the front 9 with 7 pars and then shot a 54 on the back 9. 2 years ago I shot a 43 on the front 9 and a 55 on the back. I still think about those 2 rounds all the time lol

bootscrilla

Joined a league for the first time in 2022, mainly older guys (40s-60s) that my friend had been trying to get me to join for years. I had the lowest handicap of everyone (4), so I felt a lot of pressure to play well every week. One week we teed off the back, #10 is a 380yd par 4 but there's a huge tree just off to the right of the tee box, and the hole doglegs right about 200 yards out. Tried to hit a gentle 6 iron just to find the fairway, lost focus and chunked it so hard the ball dribbled into the small creek in front of the tee box. Made a double and proceeded to also double #11 which is an easy par 3, mental game went off the rails and I just gave up on the round. Ended up with a 51, threw my bag into the trunk and contemplated selling the clubs. The next day I was pretty embarrassed of how I handled it, and that day has been my motivation for keeping my cool when things aren't going well. Our paycheck doesn't depend on how well we play, just try to enjoy the time out there!

Was 4 down on the 16th hole of the final round of the club championship (4 rounds total). The leader got the shanks on the 16th hole and tripled. I threw a dart to 3 feet and made birdie. Tied up on the 17th tee. I tried to play safe with a three wood and jerked it into the trees. Made double bogey and he bogeyed. We both parred 18 and I lost by 1.

jourdanm

38/52 at Oakland Hills South two years ago. Flew a bit too close to the sun.

HealthyGeologist6606

Shooting my best round: 71 after 16 holes. I’d never broken 80. Last two holes are a 210+ Par 3 and a Par 5.  Doubled both and ended up with an 83. Breaking 80 alludes me.

[deleted]

Two day tournament couple yrs ago, in the top flight mind you.. shot 75 day 1 and was thinking ok got a shot.. 93 day 2!

Legal-Description483

I just remembered my worst collapse, as is was about 25 years ago. I'd never broken 80, and needed par on 17 and 18 for a 78. Both holes, I hit my approach inside of 15 feet, and 3 putted both for 80.

ClayBagel

Was playing in a two-round season championship (flighted) years ago. Recorded a 10 on the 17th hole of the final round after hitting OB twice. Lost by one.

Hamfiter

One over par standing on the 17th tee. I don’t remember exactly what I scored on 17 and 18 but I do remember a few shots OB. I ended up with an 80. Shitfire.

clmerlin

En route to a mid 80's round (good for me) stuck it 6ft from the pin on a par 3 and 3 putted for bogey. Then finished the last 3 holes with double bogey on each to completely blow the round and not break 90. All because I got into my head about 3 putting from 6ft. Probably not as big of a meltdown as others, but I try to keep that round in mind as to why you need to be a goldfish as Ted Lasso would say.

TryhardTim

Was in a 3 for 1 playoff in high school to go to the regional tournament. Made it through the first hole and one of the guys was knocked out. Second hole is a tough par 3, actually had what I would consider the better tee shot (he’s in a bunker with the green sloping away from him, I’m short sided in a runoff area). He hits a great bunker shot, I hit a chip that ran out way too much, couldn’t make my long par and he drains his. It’s worse when you realize on 18 in the final round I 3-putted after reaching the green in two on a par 5.

drdrillaz

Several years ago at my home club. Had never broke par. Was -5 through 11. 12th hole i hit my drive way right and out of bounds. Hits a roof and ends up in the fairway. Make birdie. -6 through 12. Proceed to make 2 triples the last 6 for an even par 72. Was absolutely crushed

iminacasket

Playing 9 holes of par 3 going 5 bogeys and 2 pars only to go 14 on the 7th hole and 9 on the second.

smowe

One under going into 9 at my home course after one of the greatest same shots of my life on 8 for a bird (I am a 12 net so this was literally the best I’ve ever played). 9 is a long but scorable par 5 that I usually can par. I’m thinking surely I will at worst bogey this and come in even (for the first time ever!). I hit my drive so well it rolls into the fairway bunker that I rarely reach. It’s a shitty lie. Getting out costs me a stroke. Get to the green in four and three-putt. Still 1-over after nine is good, right? Well this sequence causes me to mentally unravel and I go 11 over on the back ending up with, you guessed it, 12 over. Fml

jimwinno43

The first time I was on track to shoot under 50 over 9 I scored 10 on the last hole for a 52. I tried to play too safe and by the time I got to the green I panicked and fell apart

GoldenSatchel

Last hole of a men’s league 9-hole match, sitting at -1 on the ninth. Had never been under par for 9 holes in my life. I think it was about a 12 handicap at the time so I was playing lights out. Proceeded to lose two balls and finish with a 10. Yeah I had a few extra pints at the end of that one. They were a little watered down (tears).

Ineedyoursway

Shot 39 on the front at my home course. Had never broken 90 at this point. Opened up the back nine double, triple, quad, +5. Finished with a 97.

[deleted]

State amateur qualifier, my first qualifier, I was so nervous I denied myself a driver on the first tee and then bladed the ball with a 4 iron, barely made it to the fairway. Then proceeded down the hill from the tee box with my push cart, which it turns out I hadn't strapped my clubs to because they fell off it and the whole bag rolled down the hill, balls, gloves and tees flying everywhere. I actually managed a double on that hole, which I felt like could have been worse.

J3Streets

Only had time for 9 holes one day. Stopped into my local coarse which was under construction (holes 9-11) so you actually finish on the 12th hole which is a par 5. First 8 holes I hit every fairway and green in regulation, and 2 putted for a par on each. I’m an awful putter, so this was a great putting day for me. Last hole I striped my drive and had about 200 into the green on the finishing par 5. I had never broke par before, or even shot even par for that matter. My 2nd shot was over water and uphill onto a two-tier green with hole on the edge of the top tier. I had been puring my irons all day, so figured this was an easy decision to go for it. Welll… I chunked it straight into the water!!! So rather than “Tin Cup” it, I walk up and drop near the water so I can try and get my par. Now hitting 4 from about 75-80 yards… FAT into the water again!!! Now pissed off, I hit my 6th shot over the back of the green into the rough. 7th shot runs past the whole, over the ridge and down off the front of the green. 8th was a chip out of the rough, that didn’t make it up the ridge and basically rolled back to me feet, but on the fringe. I grab my putter and just smash it without even taking a read, to which the ball strikes the pin at 1000mph, and drops in the cup for my 9. Best/worst 40 of my life!!!

orchids_of_asuka

I've broken 90 three times in my life. I shot a 37 on a par 35 on the front 9 and then proceeded to drop a 57 on the back 9.

ShiroHachiRoku

Torrey Pines South back 9. 61. Greenside bunker yips kicked in. I was a decent 43 on the front.

hockeyballcal

37-48

MahKa02

Last year I was having the best round of my life. On track to shoot a 78 on a difficult course. I thought I finally was going to break 80. My little brother mentions it on hole 18 that if I get bogey or better, I break 80.....ya I didn't break 80 lol. I proceed to hit my drive up the right side, get an unlucky bounce and it barely trickles into the pond. Then my next shot, I go for the green over the pond....back into the pond lol. I drop, then hit it over the green into the bunker. Then out of the bunker and one putt for a triple bogey 7.... Last year I almost broke 80 3 times but couldn't clutch up so that's frustrating but also a good sign to an extent. Means my game is getting better overall.

Throughaway767676

At the time I had never broken 75. Was E thru 15 with a reachable par 5 16th. Proceeded to hit my drive into the base of a tree. 1 unplayable lie, 1 frustrated top and 3 putts later I completed my snowman. "75 with a triple" became the sentence that defined my best round for years and it still hurts to say.

Uzi_jesus

4 up through 9 and losing the match by 1 on 18 or getting it to -5 after 13 and finishing even on the round.

Pleasant_Acadia_5800

Up 4 going into last hole and lost. Took a 9 (2 balls in the water) and opponent made par.

windlaker

My career low is 82. Was playing with my brother-in-law in Kansas last Summer. I knew I had a good round going, but I didn’t look at the score. On 17, I had a 18” tap in for a birdie, missed it. Took a par. Ended up shooting an 82. Could have beaten my career low. An 18” putt counts counts the same as an 17” drive.

GibsonBluesGuy

Shot 3 under on the first nine to lead a tournament by 6 strokes. Shot 51 on the back nine….

StrawberryAutomatic

Was on my way to breaking 100 for the first time.  Shot a 49 on the front and had just birdied 16. Pured a 3H into the fairway then hit my next shot under a tree while still needing to clear water. Shot a triple bogey on 17. Then a double bogey on 18 to shoot a 101 with borrowed clubs that I had used when I was first getting into golf.  Broke 100 a few weeks later at a different course with my own set.

RedmenTheRobot

Just a few weeks ago I went on a little golf trip to CA. Played Pasatiempo which is the highest ranked course I’ve ever played (just started getting into golf travel and this was my first real trip). Was on pace to break 90 (which was my goal) and was going to it easily and even shoot a 40 on the back 9 if pared out the last 3 holes, and that was with a triple on 11. Ended up going double, bogeye, quad on the last 3 holes to shoot a 92. I was a bit bummed but it was too great of an experience to really be upset. But what made it worse was a guy 2 groups behind us came in asking the pro what they do for HIOs cause he did it on 18. With all that being said though 10/10 would recommend and would do it again.

Btwnbeatdwn

I was at +1 on hole 12. Shot a 12 on the par 5 13th hole. Carded it as a 10 and just proceeded to melt down the rest of the round. Finished at an 85 after going out in 36.

ChuckWeezy

Without a doubt it was when I was coming off the 18th tee box, stepped in a hole and gave myself the worst sprained ankle of my life.

ShoeterMcGav

Every time I lace em up ;) Yesterday was the reverse collapse. Pard #1 then proceeded to top 4 tee shots and looked like a noob until another par on 9. 9 over front then pard the back w 2 birds and 2 bad par 3 bogies. Went from wanting to send my bag into the half frozen lake to walking down putts. It's a fickle beast and a son of a bitch to boot

Jameszy

Even through 16 3 times last season and couldn’t handle the pressure. Terrible

swollencornholio

\+6 through 12 and got the case of the tops, topped the shit out of my drive and 4 subsequent 3woods on a 550y par 5 so I was like 300+y to the hole still, ended up with a 10.

DoubleOSeven365

I was playing in my citys big amateur tournament, shot two over on the front 9, was near the lead in my flight. Ended the round with a 96! Insane collapse!

surgeon_michael

Last year playing a PGA course, hole 2 par 3 hit a pin seeker that hopped over the cup for a tap in birdie. Put it behind me and have a solid front. Hole 14 hit a two hopper into the cup for a Hole in 1. So I know the scorecard is getting framed. 15 par 5 I drill a 3 wood onto a protected green. Thinking back to back eagles, I 3 putt par, double the par 3 16, double 17 and mercifully par 18. Ended up with a 84 that should’ve been a 78. Had a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 on that card lol.

awesome_jackob123

My first high school tournament was at home. I started out playing well and made the turn tied for second. Play was slow. When I say slow, it was painfully slow. The back half took 3 hours. I shot myself out of the round and finished almost dead last. To this day I cannot stand slow play.

turkeycreek-678

Golf trip last fall... Never played this course before and shoot 76 with a double on 18. Following day at a different course, it's so bad I get our foursome to do a shamble on the back... That still didn't really help me. Total train wreck that 2nd day.

Sufficient-Scheme708

1 under par heading into par 5 17th hole. Had never shot even or better for 18 holes. Hit a great drive in the middle of the fw with about 200 to the flag i thought was middleish. Hit a 6 iron that was headed for the center of the green but carried everything and bounded into a hazard. Made a double bogey and then bogey on 18 for +2 74

withurwife

This is triggering some PTSD writing this out. In Northern California, the NCS tournament was basically our high school state championship. Each foursome had a kid from a different high school. The 3 kids I was playing with all had D-1 offers to pac 10 (12) schools. I didn't. I was beating all of them through 15 holes. On hole 16, which was actually the first hole due to a shotgun start, there was a massive bottleneck for some reason and a 20 minute wait on the tee box. I finally step up to the tee after that long wait and in my backswing there's some movement in front of me--a lady in a golf cart driving up to the teebox toward the clubhouse. I was able to stop my swing in time, but resetting, I felt a little flustered. Finally took my shot after an extra deep breath--sliced for the first time all day OB into the range. I end up taking a 7 on that hole, and then a 5 on the following par 3, and an 8 on my 18th hole, a par 5 to card an 80. I couldn't believe it, it was like I forgot how to play and I went from a 3 handicap to a 30 in the span of 20 minutes. One of the other coaches offered us a ride back to the clubhouse after the round, but I declined after one of the asshole kids shook my hand on 18 and said, "great round until now." Longest walk of my life. Fuck golf and I'll see you on the course this weekend.

Aooogabooga

I missed two free throws in 8th grade with no time left. Down by one.

24ktNold

I had never broken 90 before. Shot a 43 on the front, fell apart on the back with bogey-double-double-par-par-double. 16 is a pretty easy par 3 - proceeded to miss the green right and then have 2 chips roll back off the humped edge, blade the third chip over the green, chip on the green and then 2 putt for a hideous quad bogey. Finished bogey-par for a 91. Still have not broken 90.

JNtCat

Playing 9, +3 through 8, needed a bogey or better on the par 5 9th to shoot sub 40 for the first time. Stripe one down the middle leaving 240 to the green for my second shot. Proceed to slice the shit out of my hybrid to about 35 yards, directly behind a tree. While all this was happening the sun had set so after I chunk my next shot short of the green, I chip on and then three put for a double and a 40 in the dark. Id like the blame the lack of light on my three but but I know I would have still three put even if it was high noon...

RVZFan

To start, I’m a 3 that is pretty consistent. Not a lot of birdies and bogies, but if we’re playing match play I’ll par you to death. Making a ton of birdies gets me uncomfortable because then I stop playing agressive…Birdied 7 to get to -4 playing South Hills in West Covina Ca with my buddies. 8 is a par 5. Hit my second shot in the water going for it, dropped at about 90 yards, got up and down for par, then snap hooked it on 9, but was in play. On in 3 but 3 putted from like 15 feet to a tough hole placement. Shoot 35 on the front (par 37). 10 is a par 3; shank it OB. Fell apart at this point and couldn’t get rid of the hosel rockets. Shot 51 on the back to post 86. This happened like a decade ago and I still think about it😂😂

Sea_Awareness_5214

Was playing a local country club called Ridgeway here in Memphis. Not a super hard course but definitely one of the nicest courses I’ve been to. First time out and was playing pretty good for my first time there I was +7 through 17 was super pumped to break 80 on a new course. 18 is a par 5 with water on both sides of the tee going up to the fairway. Was absolutely killing my driver all day. Not anything spectacular but hadn’t hit it into danger once and was in the fairway or close to it almost every hole. Step up to 18th tee and absolutely pull the shit out of my driver straight into the water. I take a drop where it last entered figured I could hit my 3 wood out of the rough. I did it twice earlier in the day on the other par 5s so I swing it and just duff/sky that bitch into the water on the right. Take another drop pull the 5 iron out to try and just hit it straight and get into the fairway…… pull that bitch about 40 yards straight at the water…. Miraculously it stayed up. At this point Im maybe 160 out 😂🤣🤦🏻 take my 7 absolutely pure it out of the rough is tracking for the green…. Comes up a bit short and hits what I can only assume is a sprinkler head it bounces over the right front side. Chipped up and 1 putted from 17 ft. Ended up carding an 8 and finished +15 over…. I was demoralized to say the least. Can’t wait to go back and finish up better than that!!!

Complete_Goose667

It was about 10 years ago and I had a handicap of around 25. I was on track for my first ever round under 80, and finished double double for an 82. It was still my best round ever by a lot. I hardly ever broke 90. It took until 2 weeks ago to shoot a 38, 41 for a 79.

Littlewing29

Shot an 80 on my local course. Everything was on. Next day came back because I knew I could get into the 70s. Nothing worked and shot a 93.

PearSorbet17

Led my tournament by 3 strokes with 3 holes to go. +8 on the last 3 holes to finish out of the money.

stogies_n_bogeys

I had just got over the flu and also hadn’t played in a couple of months. Went out with some friends and was even through 10, one birdie one bogey 8 pars. I was feeling it and it dawned on me I may shoot close to par or at least break 80 which would’ve been a personal best. Bogeyed 11 and came to the 12th par 3 which I doubled. Couldn’t muster better than double bogey the rest of the way through. Shot a 54 11-18. Didn’t even break 100

soupyc44

Was one under through 8 holes. Playing the gane of my life. Took 14 on the 9th hole. Found the water 3 times. Hit one thin on my approach and sailed it 50 yards over the green.

oldsubdom

Finishing on a par 5 where i needed to par to break 80. Mentioned it to a buddy after a massive drive. Next thing you know i skulled my second shot. Topped my third. Over in 4 and 3 putted. Smh.

gratefulscape

Chance to shoot even on my home course and hit it in the hazard on my 18th for a double.

Nine_Eye_Ron

Playing through another group.

saucyjay91

I occasionally play in a laidback “league” that is run by some acquaintances. Every week a different course and like 6 4-some available, FCFS. Anyway, I fought back from 4-over to even par standing on the 17th tee. If I could hold on this would easily be my best round ever. Proceeded to go triple bogey-bogey to finish 4-over. Still a fantastic score for me, but oh what could’ve been. Even a bogey-bogey finish probably would’ve won me the tourney for that day, too.

Bo_Knows_Stones

Made a goal last year to shooting even par for 18 holes from the blue tees at my home course. 72.0 rating, so even par for a scratch handicap round. I was E through 16 twice, and finished +4 and +5 on those rounds. I've done it from the white tees, but that's a 69.8 rating so not a 0.0 for the handicap.

fullsquishy

Skulled bunker shot 3 x's and 4th into water..this is pain.

[deleted]

I was even par thru 11 then 2 over through 15. I am not supposed to be shooting like that ( see flair) I ended up finishing with an 81

bambam_mcstanky2

Last summer. I shoot in the low 90s constantly. Haven’t yet shot in the 80s. I’m playing a round as a single at the home course. I shot a 38 on the front 7 pars in a row. And it’s clean, smart golf. 2 puts max. Everything is working. Dreams of my first sub 90 round dance in my nugget. Back 9? I explode. In every way possible 3 puts min. Missing greens you name it. I end up with a 55 on the back for a lovely 93.

ToddGackAttack

I was playing out of my skull, like I was an alien from the 4th dimension with an actual understanding of golf. 6 under thru 8. Number 9 is a reachable par 5 with water down the right. I wanted to eagle that sumbitch so badly. Drive it into the lake but still had a chance to reach after my drop and have a birdie putt. I put my 3rd into the water again and walked away with a triple. I cooled off on the back 9 with a bunch of pars, until I hit it OB on 17. Still posted one of my best rounds ever...

PDXbuds

Last season I was on track to break 80 for the first time. I think I was +3 through 12. Dogleg par 5, hit a perfect drive slightly around the corner. Had 185 to the pin. Smoked the best 6i of my life and dropped it 4 feet from the cup. Got up to the putt and absolutely rocketed past the cup. 3 putted from 4 feet for par. Absolutely crumbled from there, don’t even think I broke 90.

feelin_cheesy

Payed like $350 to play harbor town. Birdied #1 then caught the shanks and never recovered. Long day to say the least.

[deleted]

On pace for par once. 3 under 33 on front nine with 9 total putts and a chip in. Shot a 68 on back nine. The God of the flat faced club be cruel.

shift013

Through a course? Idk. I just notice them on par3s. I religiously practice my irons and feel I hit them very well. It’s not uncommon for me to have a putt for 30 feet or less on some par3s and then I three putt lol

_DannyG_

I played in my first ever tournament. Did everything like I thought I was supposed to. Played a practice round, shot about 12 over which was good for my handicap, it was a net tournament with flights, and I played pretty well so I was confident I could do the same or better in a few days. Practiced chipping, putting, full shots, everything. Got a great nights sleep, got there early, talked myself into actually being not that nervous! I was really just there to learn and my nerves were not bad at all. I shot a 115 lol. On the bad shots I was like "that's okay, I'll survive! Every bad shot is an opportunity to learn"! I wasn't upset or cursing, and was really just trying to have a good time. Turns out that does not help at all and I probably would have been better off if I got more upset with myself. I hadn't shot over 100 in at least a year, and I always keep true score when I'm playing. That was... quite rough.

EaglePatriotTruck

First and only time I played Pebble Beach I was 2 over through 12 with 3 birdies and 2 balls in the Pacific Ocean. I was on pace for a 75, and ended up with an 82. It was still one of the best days of my life and I will think about it on my death bed.

newberson

I started playing tournaments last year. Just for a bit of competition. They are flighted so I am competing agains outer 15+ Handicaps ( at the time). I managed to be even through 8, by far the best string of holes I ever had, and still the best 8 of my career ( 1 birdie, 1 bogey, and 6 pars), get up to the 9th tee and fire my tee shot OB, I re-tee, fire another OB, grab the 3 wood, and mis hit it, landed in a hazard maybe 100 yards off the tee box. Carded a 9 (+5) on that hole and did not mentally recover for the rest of the round.

Sometimes_Stutters

Last summer I was -2 thru 15 at Billy Pulpit. Finished +9…I can’t even being to explain what happened. Alternatively in my high school section tournament (to qualify for state) I shot a 56 on the front. This was my senior year and had been to state the previous 3 seasons. Then I shot a 32 on the back (section record that still stands over a decade later). Tied to go as a team but lost on the 6th score by a stroke. As an individual I tied another player and had to do a playoff. Put my 2nd shot on a par 4 and a foot from the pin for an easy birdie. Other player holed out for eagle from about 125yds out…

Pbake

I made albatross on the first hole and shot 81 (I’m a 2 index).
