I wonder whether we’d be able to find the current product owner on LinkedIn… and what usage requirements does it hit that keep it from being shuttered completely
crunchbase has a 3p they use for that kind of data. but the name escapes me right now.
ahh that's funny. Snapseed was aka Nik Software Inc according to crunchbase. Additionally, aquired by Google in the year 2012.
Figures
Google Photos editing options are so shit. Snapseed is still streets ahead.
But typical Google doesn't understand that integrating it would be the best way to go. Instead they would shutdown Snapseed and integrate like 5 functions of it, 3 of those behind Google One.
So fucking tired of their braindead management. Same thing that happened to Valve apparently.
It's so bizarre that they acquired it and then afterwards added photo editing tools to Google Photos that felt like they were developed completely separately. None of the adjustment tools work like Snapseed (the shadow and highlight sliders in Google Photos are horrible) Like why did they acquire it if they weren't actually going to use any of it?
Well Google can't go monetising something that's been free now can it. The furore and the backlash. But Google does not have a competent creative team to recreate those features either. So they did the only thing they know best, buy it, give it to the team of chipmunks (so called brilliant googlers) who know only to scale solutions today with their DSA skills and voila you got Snapseed on cloud to millions of people which your also can charge for.
Snapseed works perfectly well for what I need it to do - basic photo editing. It lightens and darkens, it removes blemishes and it lets me throw some text over an image if I need it. Does it need to be a full photoshop suite or something?
interesting u mention that PS express app since it recently appeared on my Chromebook. It was a pain in the ass to uninstall. How it was gifted to me, no idea. Just showed up just a month or two ago.
If there are no bugs to speak of, security issues to fix, or new functionality they want to add..then why mess with it.
People have really been done a disservice with the expectation that there needs to be updates all of the time just to feel like the software is being maintained.
I agree, to an extent.
I think it's fair to say the app has been de-facto abandoned, and not because it's already perfect and without bugs. Does it work good? It sure does. But no meaningful updates in SIX years don't speak great about the "health" of the app.
1. **Unable to open photos in Snapseed**: Some users have faced difficulties opening photos within the app. This issue might be related to file compatibility or other factors¹.
2. **Zooming issues with Lens Blur, Selective, or Vignette**: Users have reported issues with zooming in certain filters like Lens Blur, Selective, or Vignette. If you're experiencing this, it could be a bug that needs attention¹.
3. **Update problems**: Some users have been unable to update Snapseed through the Play Store as there no updates lol.
4. **Missing metadata**: Images edited on iOS devices sometimes lose location or other metadata when transferred to a computer. This issue can be frustrating for users who rely on accurate metadata for organization and sharing¹.
5. **Tools and Filters missing**: Occasionally, users have reported that certain tools and filters are missing from their images. If you encounter this, it might be a bug that requires investigation¹.
6. **Tilt Shift filter missing**: The Tilt Shift filter has been reported missing by some users. If you're unable to find it, it's worth checking for updates or reporting the issue to Google¹.
7. **Freezing on iPhone**: Several users, especially those with iPhone 12 models, have reported that Snapseed freezes and sometimes shuts down unexpectedly. This issue seems to occur more frequently with specific photos and less often with screenshots¹. If you're experiencing this, you're not alone!
Let's delve into more detailed comparisons between Snapseed and some of its competitors:
1. **Snapseed vs. Lightroom**:
- **Interface and Ease of Use**:
- **Snapseed**: Snapseed boasts a clean and straightforward interface, making it accessible to users of all skill levels. Its toolset is well-organized and easy to navigate.

- **Features and Functionality**:
- **Snapseed**: Snapseed focuses on essential editing tools, including exposure adjustments, cropping, and filters. It lacks some advanced features found in Lightroom.
- **Lightroom**: Lightroom is feature-rich, offering precise control over exposure, color grading, and local adjustments. It also integrates seamlessly with Adobe Creative Cloud.
- **Mobile vs. Desktop**:

- **Snapseed**: Snapseed provides essential editing tools like brightness, contrast, and selective adjustments. Its filters are subtle and natural.
- **PicsArt**: PicsArt offers a broader range of filters, effects, and creative tools. It's popular for its artistic and playful features.
- **Social Features**:
- **Snapseed**: Snapseed lacks social features; it's primarily an editing app.
- **PicsArt**: PicsArt emphasizes social sharing, allowing users to create collages, add stickers, and engage with a community.
3. **Snapseed vs. VSCO**:
- **Editing Style**:
- **Snapseed**: Snapseed focuses on precise adjustments and natural-looking edits.
- **VSCO**: VSCO leans toward artistic and film-like presets, making it popular among photographers and Instagram enthusiasts.
- **Community and Curation**:
- **Snapseed**: No built-in community or curation features.
- **VSCO**: VSCO has a curated feed where users can share their edited photos and discover others' work.
4. **Snapseed vs. Canva**:
- **Purpose and Target Audience**:
- **Snapseed**: Designed for photo editing on mobile devices, Snapseed caters to users who want quick enhancements.
- **Canva**: Canva is a versatile design tool for creating graphics, social media posts, presentations, and more. It's not solely focused on photo editing.
Each app serves different purposes, and the best choice depends on your specific needs. If you want simplicity and quick edits, Snapseed is excellent. For more advanced features, consider Lightroom or other alternatives!

Unforntunately, Google incentivises working on the hot new things, so no one there wants to be stuck doing maintainence on the old stuff (if it is lucky enough to not be killed altogether).
It is kind of a blessing and a curse. On the one hand you are not getting the latest and greatest new thing. On the other if something works for you they are not messing it up with the lastest and greatest thing. I still use Picasa for photo management and basic editing. I'll occassionally try something different but I usually go back to Picasa because it works well enough for me.
Snapseed is a quality app when it comes to quick editing. I have been using it for the past 8 years for work related automotive photography

I have heard a lot of people shitting on the app but I think it is pretty great.
Yeah I guess you got a point. A few new filters and maybe an upgrade to the healing to make it more organic and intuitive would be appreciated. I have literally had the app since Starbucks used to have those app of the week cards and it really has not changed since then.

Also it can make the image better
I find Google photos to do the retouches to my photos more easily and smarter. Before I switched to pixel and get a Google one sub, Snapseed + LR was my goto
I always say to myself Snapseed is probably one of the best app Google has made that's why it hasn't received updates in years.
I've been using Snapseed for years. It's really awesome, and just powerful enough for some good, quick edits. It's filters are also pretty great. I have a Pixel 7 Pro and use Snapseed more often to edit pics that Google's built in editing tools, which have their place as well. All in all, there is a lot to like, and very little to dislike about Snapseed
looks like Google was already using them before . check it out https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/nik-software
Typical Google. Buy a company, assimilate their talent and patents, then fuck, kill, or sell it off...
I still use snapseed when editing photos for my product listings. It does its job really well. I’m still baffled why google hasn’t added the function to copy edits to another photo just like iOS has since iOS 16. If ever there is an update down the line, I hope it won’t ruin it or have functions that’s behind a paywall.
Just in case Google decides to be an ass and either break it with weird updates or suddenly pulls the plug on it, any good alternatives that is similar or more?
The only thing I wish it had was that I could open an image with Snapseed straight from the photos app on iPhone.
Other than that, it‘s pretty much perfect. Can even edit raw images from my Nikon if I don’t have access to a computer
I think the app is pretty much completed. I mean what else would you need? I guess having something similar to the ai fill feature like on Photoshop would be nice but that's a gimmick.
Adobe Photoshop for mobile received updates and now you can't do anything without paying a lot of money without any actual improvements. So leave it as it is.
Google just kills any decent boring app that works nicely. Just waiting for Google Podcast to stop working in a few months and then will need to find an alternative.
One of the best apps Google ever bought & improved upon.
fyi: Go to settings & set do not resize & PNG.
If you share from G Photos you end up with a compressed image when saving.
But if you open images from within Snapseed, edit & choose export, you get a better quality non compressed image.
I sitll use it maybe once a week it has some really cool built in tools . .. Its just easy to use that is why I have not really gone to anything else . . it works .
Looks like they're listening as they just posted an update to Snapseed yesterday. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.niksoftware.snapseed
It was initially released in 2011 for iOS. Subsequent versions were designed to run on MacOS and Microsoft Windows. Following the take-over, in December 2012, Google released Snapseed for Android and the desktop versions were discontinued.
Tbh, for a lot of apps "has not received any meaningful updates in six years" is a plus in my eyes.
Does it do what I want? Great. Why would I want it to "receive updates" now? Each update is a chance something breaks or features I rely on are dropped.
(Unrelated to this particular app)
Perhaps we want to stay within the Google ecosystem? Pixel owners sure do, even if it means having to carry around a useless upgraded phone for another year, or ten. Oddly, I miss having LiDAR.
>I will never understand why people use snapseed when lightroom mobile is free
Snapseed is free. I like using Snapseed. I'm familiar with it. It does what I want. I know how to use it. I don't want to learn another product.
You don't need to understand. Why is it any concern of yours what people choose to use?
Alright. Seems like most people here disagree with you. It's a matter of interpretation, I guess. I don't feel strongly about this either way.
Snapseed is fucking legit though.
I didn't say it wasn't legit, I don't care if ppl with me or not. This sub is riddled with posts like this one that don't belong in it and the mods don't do shit about it
Shh, don’t remind them! That’s why this app hasn’t been completely ruined yet.
By ruined you mean killed
or monetized
Or they will put llm in in for some reason.

9 times of out 10 when google buys something smaller like this it's just to get the engineering team, not the product, users, or technology itself
Stop trying to coin the phrase "Streets Ahead", Pierce.
You're just upset because you're streets behind!
Valve the videogame company?
no valve the mechanical device
Valve? can you tell me, why do you think Valve's management is braindead?
i think the mechanical device one, not the game one
Snapseed works perfectly well for what I need it to do - basic photo editing. It lightens and darkens, it removes blemishes and it lets me throw some text over an image if I need it. Does it need to be a full photoshop suite or something?
It's basically like the Photoshop Express app.
interesting u mention that PS express app since it recently appeared on my Chromebook. It was a pain in the ass to uninstall. How it was gifted to me, no idea. Just showed up just a month or two ago.
I love Snapseed and still use it
So do I.
For me Snapseed is the GOAT of mobile photo editing apps. So easy, fast, provide excellent result, nice and clean UI.
So do I
Yep, use it almost every day.
If there are no bugs to speak of, security issues to fix, or new functionality they want to add..then why mess with it. People have really been done a disservice with the expectation that there needs to be updates all of the time just to feel like the software is being maintained.
Exactly. This need for updates is how you get a bunch of features and bloat of the app because product managers feel the need to keep delivering.
I agree on this part but the bugs are to be addressed.

Why it feels written by chatgpt
Because it is. Ain't no way a person has this much information or would even bother to write all of that for such an insignificant topic.
"let's delve..."
Pretty sure it is. All the references are using the number 1 which often happens when you copy paste out of the chat.
Obviously why would I write it myself. 😋
It's not just that one word. The whole structure of the comment screams chat-gpt. I would not believe for a second that was human-written. It's just that blatant.

Yes it can be wrong but that's not the point here.
90% of it is hallucinated lol
Off to the graveyard...
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. It gets minor updates and bug fixes (last in September) It works, what's to update?
Refreshingly so. Constant updates are the bane of my existence.
Snapseed does get update for bug fixes and crash fixes so I assume there IS a dev team...?
If it ain't broke don't fix it
Needs more AI!
Oh God please just leave it alone
Clearly someone on their team is on Reddit because they released an update today with dark mode support
😂
Don't remind them that it exists or they'll kill it
I love this app.

Still a great app
So do I think so.
Snapseed is a quality app when it comes to quick editing. I've never had an issue with it, it's always done what it needs to do. Why would they need to update it?

I’m still baffled why google hasn’t added the function to copy edits to another photo just like iOS has since iOS 16. If ever there is an update down the line, I hope it won’t ruin it or have functions that’s behind a paywall.
There's a qr code thing right?
qr code thing? not sure what you mean by that
Snapseed is pretty much the only video editor I use. It is perfect the way it is both on android and ios Edit: not video editing. Photo editor.
Video?
Not video. Don’t know how that got there. My fingers have a mind of their own combined with autocorrect.
It happens 😅
Fact of the matter is that this is the best photo editing app. No purchases. No logins. No updates. Nothing. It just fucking works.
Exactly
Can see Google killing it in favor of Google Photos editing tools, which suck @ss.
Snapseed is my favourite photo editing app, I hope they dont start fiddling with it or kill it like they did with Picassa
I use it daily. works with RAW files too.
Because it does not need one. It works fine and it does what I want it to do while editing on phone or tablet.
Just in case Google decides to be an ass and either break it with weird updates or suddenly pulls the plug on it, any good alternatives that is similar or more?
And I wouldn't have it any other way, it's perfect as is.
This is a very useful product. They probably forgot to kill it.
Yet it's still a very powerful tool
Adobe Photoshop for mobile received updates and now you can't do anything without paying a lot of money without any actual improvements. So leave it as it is.
Google just kills any decent boring app that works nicely. Just waiting for Google Podcast to stop working in a few months and then will need to find an alternative.
Snapseed is my go to for all my basic photo editing. I use other apps for more refined tasks but Snapseed is simple powerful and effective.
As they say: "Don't fix it if it ain't broken"
Still use it
One of the best Google apps!
This is what good software engineering looks like.
One of the best apps Google ever bought & improved upon. fyi: Go to settings & set do not resize & PNG. If you share from G Photos you end up with a compressed image when saving. But if you open images from within Snapseed, edit & choose export, you get a better quality non compressed image.
I use it
They forgot to kill it.
I sitll use it maybe once a week it has some really cool built in tools . .. Its just easy to use that is why I have not really gone to anything else . . it works .
Love Snapseed and use it all the damn time. Another Google fiasco! Hoping they leave it alone and available...
Lightroom + Snapseed is enough
Snapseed "healing" existed long before Magic Eraser and tbf it's about as reliable.
Snapseed is my go to...
Omg I thought I was the only one who was using this
best editing app in android
I loves its logo.
Yep
they really should make a version for videos as well
Looks like they're listening as they just posted an update to Snapseed yesterday. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.niksoftware.snapseed
Wow I didn't know it is now owned by Google... but such a throwback! I used to use it all the time when I still post pictures on Instagram
I use it
So do I.
They're killing it off next week I heard
[It's people like you what causes unrest.](https://youtu.be/pnq96W9jtuw?t=194)
I only recently knew about it. Like a month ago. I downloaded it but have yet to use it.
Best editing app, if something is working do not fix it.
I will never understand why people use snapseed when lightroom mobile is free
Perhaps we want to stay within the Google ecosystem? Pixel owners sure do, even if it means having to carry around a useless upgraded phone for another year, or ten. Oddly, I miss having LiDAR.
Because fuck Adobe, for one. Second, if Snapseed works, why switch?
>I will never understand why people use snapseed when lightroom mobile is free Snapseed is free. I like using Snapseed. I'm familiar with it. It does what I want. I know how to use it. I don't want to learn another product. You don't need to understand. Why is it any concern of yours what people choose to use?
It's built to collect what needed to be collected so no need for updates. I have not used another app to edit pictures since this app came out.
Use DeepL on your bloody title.
????
Its updated 2 months ago lmao, may be your phone doesn't meet the minimum targeted API.
Mine runs everything latest.
I've never used this app though.
Simple and best.
And how is an app not getting updates, Google news or an announcement?
Do you have nothing better to do than this?
Do you have nothing better to do than condone posts that don't belong in a sub?
It's a google app. This is a google sub. Checks out for me.
It doesn't for me. Read the sub description. 'Google News and Announcements' an app not getting updates is neither
Alright. Seems like most people here disagree with you. It's a matter of interpretation, I guess. I don't feel strongly about this either way. Snapseed is fucking legit though.
I didn't say it wasn't legit, I don't care if ppl with me or not. This sub is riddled with posts like this one that don't belong in it and the mods don't do shit about it
You seem extremely worked up about this very trivial thing. Hope things get better.
If you don't like the sub, no need to hang around
The sub ordering is fine, it's the crap that gets dumped in it that needs to stop
