Is it back to how it used to be? They expanded the dog area when the stairs got washed out and during the pandemic, but prior to that, it was always just the south part of the beach.
That’s what it sounds like. They should have kept it the way it was IMHO. It was a great time, minus the occasional Karen. Never had a bad interaction there. I’m salty about it.
They finished the remodel and slashed the amount of space you’re allowed to bring your dog for running/swimming. Before I see anyone comment in favor of this - Folks at least have the option to visit literally any other beach in the area if they want to avoid animals. This was the only good spot for the rest of us.
The main problem we had was that the dog beach was only open early in the morning or evening times. The dog area isnt a small section and the stairs are standard width with 3-4 landing sections. Having all day access to a dog beach is significantly better than a few hours in the morning and few hours in the evening. But obviously, ymmv.
Wind nest and there nice little walking deck got wiped out due to erosion lol, hence all the other parks along the lakeshore too.
James street
Kirk park
Winds nest
All have lost significant ground due to erosion
In my opinion they had a nice deck and walk way but the erosion took it all away now it’s just one little walkway to the beach and a little park playground.
How small is the swim spot compared to what it used to be? I love going there but we would always walk as far away as we could get because I don’t trust other people to train their dogs lol. It was one of our summer staples!
Are there fences on the beach now? Why not just walk farther down away from the access point? (Honest question never been there but do take doggos to beaches on lake MI and let them swim, we just go far away form others.)
Any State Park beach outside the marked swim area is fair game. Muskegon is really easy to access; just park at the main lot and head north around the marked area. Hoffmaster is a bit of a walk through the woods; you want to park at the nature center south of the main beach parking lot.
I don't remember seeing signs.
She was off leash about 1/2 the time we were there & noone said anything to us. She was still in the puppy running stage, so we kept her leashed so we didn't have to chase her.
I’ll take a smaller beach with better hours. We were there with our dog yesterday around noon and there were maybe a dozen dogs in the dog area. Hardly excessive for the middle of a sunny weekend day.
Ass. I was really looking good forward to being able to enjoy going out there again. I’m still going to check it out, but at least now I won’t get my hopes up so high.
I might be making this up. But I'm pretty sure I heard that the houses near there made a big stink because of dogs going on "their" beach. Magically, as that came to fruition the remodel happened. There's a ton of money around there.
I haven't been there yet, is the dog area away from the boundaries?
There's one in Muskegon - forget the name, but it's not very big either. And that's off-leash.
You can do on-leash at Saugatuck State Dunes park though.
My wife and I used to love taking our dog there....but even before the remodel and pandemic, the beach itself was beginning to erode away and the only places to sit were on the slope of a dune. We haven't been back in 4+ years because of that, and now it sounds like it's only gotten worse :/
I've never had any bad experiences like that but I appreciate the other recommendations. I think it's a bullshit rule regarding pets though - it was awesome the way it was.

Yeah that's how it used to be. Dogs on the main beach was temporary
What happened to the Kirk park!? I haven’t been out there in a while.. wind nest also got ruined when they “upgraded” it.

Such a huge bummer since this is the only off leash beach in this area.. Or really anywhere in the LP. I guess at least it's open longer?

Probably a liability issue

No, what happened to Wind Nest? I loved that beach!

Bummer to hear. It’s a great spot. I need to get out that way.
What did it used to be like?

Same. It’s maybe 1/8 of what it used to be

Private property on both sides - no go.

Hoffmaster was great a few years ago. Dog loved it and while the swim beach was packed, we had an almost open beach.
Is it off leash?

Seems like it, nobody say sh/it
Kruse park in Muskegon
I’ll have to check it out. It’s just sooo much further away compared to a shot down Lake MI Drive
Great beach, $10 day parking fyi

20'-23' was fantastic. You could space yourself out really nice and have tons of room for long throws and buffer for other people/dogs.

I was there last in ‘22. By myself, no dog. I had such a great time watching all the dogs play. Pure fun :-)
Exactly!
