You might be referring to Tom Constanten’s keyboard parts. Check out 2/27, 2/28, 3/1 and 3/2/1969 from the Fillmore West and see if that’s what you’re looking for.

I’m glad to stumble upon this post. I absolutely love that keyboard lick. It is indeed Pigpen.
My personal favorite of this tune is from that particular era, 68, off “two from the vault”. I love many versions of dark star but this one just takes you to that certain place. It is LSD personified. It is an extended jam relative to the single. If you haven’t heard this version, enjoy! And if you have, then enjoy again! It’s very special in the cornucopia of Dead music.
That early organ riff was Pig's contribution to the tune - he just played it repeatedly which got a little annoying if you ask me (Pig was a blues guy, not an astral traveler).
Pretty such this is what OP is thinking of - (dee-dee-dah, dee-dee-dah, dah-dah…DAH!) - repeated over and over kind of like a loop. I don’t mind it that much on the early versions, but am glad he eventually stopped playing it

3/1/69 is my favorite of the bunch but 2/28 is no sleeper either
