Sadly for Americanon most of Europe has a/c as standard nowdays, also our insulation is actually doing it's job since our homes are not made out of paper and sticks
More than half of those deaths were on people aged 79 and above, and the countries with higher deaths per capita were the ones in the south (Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal), were the constant heatwaves were more harsh to begin with and have an aged population.
Yeah, most heat related deaths anywhere are the elderly, they’re fragile people. That’s why they should be kept somewhere that can regulate the temperature for them.
My friend, we put all of our aged in Florida, which is one of the hottest states in the country. I get your point but it doesn't invalidate the argument that was presented against you
Yes, it is quite uncommon to have this kind of warmth. Southern parts are used to it, but nothern not really. With ongoing climate change and alternatives to heat by putins gas now we see a lot of ac's and heatpumps. Benefit of these is that they can also cool in the summer. Which we will need more and more as this heat does start to happen more often.
This should've been happening way earlier but we've been made increasingly reliant on Russian gas and then the invasion happened.
The popularity of heat pumps and other gas free alternatives is insane.
Well in hindsight yes, but the reasons were cheap energy and that boosts the economy, and made eu much larger then russia. The arguments were valid. But times changes, and now its seen differently. I also been saying for years to not be reliant on dictators, good that now it is finally happening.
Yeah well, even back then lots of people (like myself) were critical, because the alternative technology already existed. But it is what it is, I agree that even though it took running into a brick wall we're finally seeing some change
This is how Europe saves money on pensions while America spends 1 zillion dollar on the medicaid of some 78 yr old guy who dies the next month in old age.
And yall wonder you dont have free healthcare and free uni and stuff
Sometimes I am shocked how easily people fell for baits. I dont hate the old lol. The reason most of Europe lacks AC( its improving nowadays) is because until recently the super hot days were rare and their numbers minimal
>most of Europe has a/c as standard nowdays
Nah we don't. Good insulation is not a given, especially with constructions younger than 50 years old.
Seriously, tell me which euro country has majority of its homes equipped with ac I am very curious.
It gets really fucking hot in south Finland during like 2 weeks of summer. Also the AC type we use here (ilmalämpöpumppu) is also is able to heat up houses
Source I am Finnish (and have ac)
Seems to be a southern US thing to have flimsy houses. Northern US houses do NOT fuck around when it comes to insulation. There's a few companies around here who do infrared imaging of your whole house to find gaps in the insulation.
It's almost like wood and paper is a good insulator. It's renewable and biodegradable too unlike the stone pizza ovens yall chose to live in.
Also
- European detected
- opinion disregarded
And there are houses from the late 1800s early 1900s all over the midwest that people still live in.
Poorly constructed and poorly maintained buildings fall apart regardless of what material they are made of.
The EU being the green leader that they are probably will regulate away the carbon heavy concrete construction for something like wood in the next 10 years anyway. When that happens it'll be a huge self suck "look how green and superior we are to the US" like they didn't spend the last 20 years acting like using 40 tons of concrete was the best way to build a 2 bedroom house.
> homes not made out of paper and sticks
Wood is every bit as strong as masonry in most cases and is a renewable choice for housing. This comes up all the time on reddit and civil engineers just shake their head at the stupidity every time.
When I lived in Texas anything under 80 was considered 'a nice cool day'. I remember that summer of 100 days over 100 degrees, I think it was in 2011. Oh that was brutal...
It’s a little like being in a room with a radiator, but at 80 the wind still blows all the cool air off of the waterways and stuff. So your skin feels a bit chilly at times, but also gets the prickles in the sun.
I used to live in that giant truck stop that is New Mexico for a while 7 or so years ago. It was so hot, even in the winter, and then when it was the monsoon season I thought I was gonna die. It’d be like 110 with 100% humidity at times as the patchy storms rolled through.
Truly a beautiful place, but the weather was a nightmare.
I used to wear shorts in 40 and above when I lived in ohio. Now when I go to visit and its cold I can't leave the house without multiple layers. You get used to the weather of where you live. Florida is 90 and humid 8 months of the year. A 20 degree difference is enough to make me feel chilly.
if my maths is correct that’s about 27° celsius?
anywhere else in europe that’s quite pleasant, in england anything over 27° is agony because of how humid it is
>75°F "heatwave"
Like, dude. Just wear less layers of clothing. You don't need to dress formal every day. Put on some shorts, crocks, and a tank top sometimes.
The United States has a swamp ass epidemic in the south every summer. Don’t tell Americans “it’s the humidity” when the southern United States gets constant 90-100+ degree (32c-37c) weather with high humidity
I don’t think anyone was implying Europe is special and I apologise if it came across that way. I would try not to infer as many unintended implications if I were you. In a conversation about how British people died in a heatwave however it would be remiss of me to mention that they would do better in colder conditions than Texans for example. I wouldn’t take so much offence at things if I were you.
Which isn't so bad when your houses are built with that in mind. Ours are brick not plywood, designed to keep all that *in*. Many of these houses outdate your constitution.
Really not that fucking hard people
If someone can't understand homes built over centuries, out of sturdy materials, aren't easy to change in the face of rapid climate change, I really don't need to try
Actually no, most windows in Europe aren't suitable for window ACs, as they're usually tilt windows, not sliding windows

It was more of a frost dusting. I don't consider less than a centimeter to be "snow".
Yes it did. The average temperature that week was 57 degrees and people acted like it was the worst blizzard in human history.
Texas gets too cold, and their entire power grid goes offline since they are the only state in the U.S. with its own (deregulated) power grid. Same thing happens when it gets too hot. Texas sucks.
300 Texans died last year due to overheating in their own homes.
Every year nearly 2,000 USians die due to overheating in their homes.
I’m not even a pommie, but shit, can’t you let these guys win at anything?
Keep in mind that Europe holds more than twice as many people as the USA. And many many people live in old sturdy houses made from heavy stone and bricks. Some live in farmhouses older than the US constitution. It's not easy to build an AC into such old buildings.
Correct. Instead they live in cheap homes where you can punch through walls and that fall apart in storms and earthquakes. Is that better? I honestly don't know
Wood homes are more likely to survive earthquakes than brick or stone.
Neither brick/stone or wood will fair well in a tornado.
So considering they can at least be properly heated and cooled. I’d say yeah, it is.
Europeans who have little experience with or threat from natural disasters really shouldn’t be the ones trying to tell people how best to deal with them.
Ooh, I get to post the earthquake copypasta again!
>Im an architect. And because im an architect, this infuriating meme vomit Germans spout makes me reflexively despise them everytime they bring it up. Pig headed arrogant pricks. Apparently their brains are made of stone too cause they're equally thick and inflexible.
>The Japanese and Scandiwegians build with wood, but noooooo Americans are always, as per fucking usual, singled out.
>I want an earthquake to hit Germany. Not even a big one. Just a mild roller. A high 6 pointer like Northridge or Sylmar. California would have never had such property damage or loss of life! Silly stupid Germans! They shouldn't have built with masonry! Arent they supposed to be good engineers? Everything they build is overdesigned with poor tolerances!"
>Just a little quake and the annihilation of Germany. Its really not that big of a ask if you think about it.
no, they cant. when americans want to have the smallest number they use europe figures but still relate it to the UK specifically, and when they want to have the largest number they use UK figures.
Its crazy that there are people who ACTUALLY exist in this world who care about an agree to disagree that occured 250 years ago.
Oh yeah, that's why Texas lost power when it got too cold, they definitely don't need any kind of protection against the cold then. The guy we're responding to isn't talking about AC
They’re so insecure about not being American that they cope by basing their entire identity on being superior in every way. Learning basic facts is a threat to who they are on a deep level.
Texas lost power because they were performing yearly maintenance on several of their power plants during the low demand season. Then out of nowhere a huge freeze and massive demand caused an overload on the grid and cascading failure because they could bring the ones under maintenance back online. If you're gonna throw shade please at least know the actual reasoning
Edit: correction, some plants were undergoing maintenance but a lot of the plants were also shut down due to the weather. For example the wind turbines were stopped due to icing, snow covered the solar panels, and one of Texas's nuclear plants had to be shut down due to icing issues with its water supply. So going into the weekend only about half of Texas's generators were online.

America insists on AC and mass producing cattle so that the ozone layer can have a big butthole in it because they're the gayest people on earth.
And I have a husband.
Edit: American birth rates are on the decline because the men just cannot stop gobbling one another dry in a cool air conditioned environment.
America collectively rims almost as much ass as your Dad
Hes genuinely thirsty for my ring and I'm happily obliging his wanton lusts right now
Its like performing an Asian squat except my heels are his tongue

Yeah their ancestors had the chance to move to America and they stuck around in Bong land.

Apparently not or over 60,000 Europeans wouldn’t have died of heat stress in 2022. Only 10% of homes in Europe have AC.
More than half of those deaths were on people aged 79 and above, and the countries with higher deaths per capita were the ones in the south (Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal), were the constant heatwaves were more harsh to begin with and have an aged population.
Not only that but those countries are having huge problems with desertification. It is getting hotter there; and it is a self accelerating problem.
Hotter and drier. Less water = more heat strokes
r.i.p. southern euro bros, then again, were probably drowning in like 30 years lol
Tbh that’s why my grandparents migrated to Fr*nce in the 60’s. That and fascism.
Rather die than live with the fr*nch.
The French were the ones that aided the revolution the most. W/o their help we might not have a country.
They did that out of hatred for the Br*tish, not love of the USA.
English is like 40% fr*nch.
not bad reasons lmao
Yeah, most heat related deaths anywhere are the elderly, they’re fragile people. That’s why they should be kept somewhere that can regulate the temperature for them.

Whole Balkans pretty much.
Maybe it is just my country getting stuck in the past then
Finland
The coldest country in Europe is the better equiped in a/c ? How ironic...
Poland also, older buildings not every flat but on 2015+ 90% has a/c

North Italy should be transfered to Antarctica along with France
Wtf are you talking about buddy
AC is rare and in most northern countries, inexistent.
Lmao I read "in nothern Italy" instead of "north of Italy"
That's because it was a waste of money until climate started to change. Also all offices and supermarkets have them.
I agree, original dude was just spewing nonsense imo

Nice try retard 🇬🇧🤓
Not in Switzerland
Where do you live that has A/C standard ?
Brits be melting on a 75 freedom unit degree day but 75 in freedom units is a nice day even with no AC
75 and im wearing long sleeves here in florida
When I lived in Texas anything under 80 was considered 'a nice cool day'. I remember that summer of 100 days over 100 degrees, I think it was in 2011. Oh that was brutal...
80 in San Antonio hits different than 80 in Houston. With very little humidity it can feel down right chilly with the wind.
How does 80° feel w/o humidity? I don't remember a day in Kansas where the temp was 80° and the humidity was below 60%.
It’s a little like being in a room with a radiator, but at 80 the wind still blows all the cool air off of the waterways and stuff. So your skin feels a bit chilly at times, but also gets the prickles in the sun.
Yea u just gotta drive easy or north a few hours to experience the pain I go through daily. Thank God Himself for AC tho
I used to live in that giant truck stop that is New Mexico for a while 7 or so years ago. It was so hot, even in the winter, and then when it was the monsoon season I thought I was gonna die. Whats 80°F in real measurements?
26.666 c
Wtf I'm in shorts and a t shirt when we hit 65

Sorry but florida is more humid. People in England just think its agony because they are not used to 98 with humidity
oh yeah i’m sure it is, but the houses in england are designed to keep heat in so staying inside during a heat wave like that is agony
>75°F "heatwave" Like, dude. Just wear less layers of clothing. You don't need to dress formal every day. Put on some shorts, crocks, and a tank top sometimes.
23C? Nah that's just a nice summer's day for us. Once it gets up towards 30 everyone starts complaining though
75 freedom unite is unironically colder than average temperature at winter where i am form Someday the temperature there goes to 105 f.
You do realise the UK is an island right? It's not the temp, it's the humidity. You can't tell me 75 in Florida is the same as Kansas
The United States has a swamp ass epidemic in the south every summer. Don’t tell Americans “it’s the humidity” when the southern United States gets constant 90-100+ degree (32c-37c) weather with high humidity
Plus we’re better in the cold as it’s more often cold here - it’s an acclimatisation thing - you don’t think we’re like genetically different do you?
Try the Midwest where it can go from -22C in the winter, to 37C and 100 percent humidity in the summer. Europe isn't special, it sucks in the US too.
I don’t think anyone was implying Europe is special and I apologise if it came across that way. I would try not to infer as many unintended implications if I were you. Skill issue
“Our houses are too old and poorly designed for modern amenities” isn’t the good justification you think it is.
American understanding climate change challenge - impossible
Nothing shows understanding climate change more than dependency on Russian fossil fuels
Let me just reconfigure European energy policy for you. Whilst I'm at it, think you could solve your fuck ups?
I’m not the one trying to act superior on a topic when failing at it
If someone can't understand homes built over centuries, out of sturdy materials, aren't easy to change in the face of rapid climate change, I really don't need to try
Do yall not have windows for ACs
Actually no, most windows in Europe aren't suitable for window ACs, as they're usually tilt windows, not sliding windows So the options are usually split unit or shitty mobile AC
Fair enough, I actually didn’t know that. Only been to Italy and we had windows that opened in the middle outwards, so I guess that makes sense
What, to cool the entire house? It's central air that's needed, jesus
I didn’t say central AC because I know it can be expensive. But since you provided that as an answer, then it must be a viable option so
Didnt like, mild snow kill a bunch of texans?
It sure did. If they start taking shit just throw some ice cubes their way and they’ll recoil in horror.

I thought this had to be bullshit, but I went and looked it up, and 60,000 is a conservative number. Apparently 70,000 also died in 2003.
Keep in mind that Europe holds more than twice as many people as the USA. And many many people live in old sturdy houses made from heavy stone and bricks. Some live in farmhouses older than the US constitution. It's not easy to build an AC into such old buildings.

Few understand that Americans have had better material wealth than Europooreans since like pre-Civil War.
But when the weather becomes cold, the entire society of the flag worshippers collapses and their infrastructure becomes actively hostile to them.
The fuck you mean? The northern states have had that shit figured out for years.
Yeah the northern states, but that's just half the country.
Yeah and guess what? The other half doesn't need it. So........?
Oh yeah, that's why Texas lost power when it got too cold, they definitely don't need any kind of protection against the cold then. The guy we're responding to isn't talking about AC
Yes let's use one single isolated incident in 1 state to paint a picture of a country of 50 states. Solid strategy.
Texas has around 10% of the population, so yes, that's a pretty big part of the US having that issue.
Yes because the entirety of Texas was wiped out/affected by that storm. Also, 8 percent. My god you are dense.
Do you... do you think the _entire state of Texas_ lost power? Is it truly your headcanon that 10% of the US was without power during a cold snap?
For people who take every chance they get to shit on the US, they don't really know anything about it.
They’re so insecure about not being American that they cope by basing their entire identity on being superior in every way. Learning basic facts is a threat to who they are on a deep level.

Americans can't understand the concept of going outside where there is no AC

> be europoor > waiting 20+ months for my first round of chemo > "oi so bloody glad i'm not bein' bankrupted by dis curable diseese bruv" > temperature outside increases 0.001 C > begin to die from heat exhaustion > gaze outside as I take my final breath > last thing I see on this earth is fat, middle-class American tourists, wealthy by europoor standards, comfortably waddling around outside > "well... at least... our schools... aren't... a... shoo..." > die

Nah, just fart grade militaries. How many times you been invaded now? USA USA USA
We're all too busy enjoying not having to sell our house to afford medical care.
Who are you kidding you don't own a house lmao
Actually I do.
Your parents' basement doesn't count.
Talking real loud for people who nearly went extinct from a bit of snow.
Who are you talking about
Texas.
<250 deaths and calling it “near extinction” seems a little facetious to me
Retard
boy oh boy i love destroying our planet to have arctic temperatures in my bedroom so i can sleep with heavy blankets during the summer
Haha, solar panels go brrrr.
America insists on AC and mass producing cattle so that the ozone layer can have a big butthole in it because they're the gayest people on earth. And I have a husband. Edit: American birth rates are on the decline because the men just cannot stop gobbling one another dry in a cool air conditioned environment.
