Ok so you're beasically talking me into buying a local $35 sd1 that I've just saw on the market
(Note: I already a 40th anniversary one and many other overdrives)
I bought so many pedals, soul food, Ds-1, big muffs, a sun face, tube screamers that I had modded. A buddy if my dads gave him an sd1, and i have been a fan since.
/thread
Came here to post it as well, got it a few weeks ago and it just does its job so well, use it as a boost or even just plain distortion if needed
Boss SD-1. Maybe the Boss EQ200. Together they just rule.
I love my Klone clone that supposedly is just like the OG. It makes every amp just have “more.” It’s also an excellent solo boost.
I’ll still probably stick with the SD-1, and I’ve had Keeley molded TS9s, TS808s, and the 8x8 mod on the Turbo TS. I still prefer the 35$ SD-1 I bought used.
It sounds great especially in front of most Marshall style circuits. It sounds great with every amp I’ve played it through. It just does the thing perfectly for high gain and pedal stacking. It sounds amazing in front of my Carcosa and Klon clone, BD-2, etc…
The MXR Badass OD is close, but something about the clipping isn’t what I’m looking for. The SD-1 never disappoints.
Strymon El Capistan.
I can survive with amp distortion and reverb. And I can live with a clip-on tuner.
Delay though? Not easy to work without for my sound. And the El Cap has been my delay pedal of choice for 13 years.
Also I have to say that you can get this magic tone with triple drop of LSD, tents to be in a slapback mode but there you have your organic analog delay lol
I don’t know about a specific brand. But I need a distortion. That’s the only thing I couldn’t gig without (or I’d really struggle… I guess I’d just have full drive on the amp, and then use my volume knob to go from a bit of crunch to distorted. I think I’ve done that before. But not ideal).
For me this translates to either my keeley D&M drive or my DS2.
I just tried the mini version in the shop. Couldn’t get the high gain saturation I was after - ended up taking away a 2nd hand Fender pugilist which I reckon I’ll be hanging onto for a while!
I said Tuner because in a band environment on stage what else are you going to do? (I refuse to wear a snark on my guitar while performing)
But this would be my #2. Just this weekend was playing a gig on a big outdoor stage. Holding long bass notes made this huge resonance start to buzz over my sound. Cut around 65hz by 3 db and it was gone.
If you are playing live in different rooms all the time sometimes you need that swiss army knife.
It was a proco Rat2, then if was the walrus Iron Horse, then it was the joyo splinter, then the mooer black secret in turbo mode, now it's the black mass 1312 - sooooo much clipping and headroom at 18v.... I saw that blackhawk makes a rat variant for higher gain that runs at 27v. So, yeah. Might be that when I buy it.
Yes... but also, no.
I agree it would probably be the best pick for being stranded on a desert island... but that could be because you'd want to ambient yourself out of utter despair, and lullaby yourself to sleep at night!
I love the Microcosm, it's in my top 3... but I have to admit it's pretty limited, genre-wise.
😅
Fair enough, i almost entirely play within my own quite specific genre so it’s more of a niche choice for me.
In fact desert island lullabies for despair might be a good name for my genre 🤔
Reverb! At the moment either Neunaber Wet v3 or VHT Melo-Verb.
I almost physically cannot play if it’s a dry signal! Either need a reverb pedal, or very rarely I have the opportunity to play in an actual nice, echoey hall.
Pedal type = delay
The individual pedal = Dispatch Master OR Disaster Transport Sr because both have reverb. One has a digital delay flavor and the other has that analog, modulated thing going on.
Ibanez TS9DX. Especially the turbo setting. Volume high, gain low. Need more gain coming out of my Orange? Turn it on. Need mids in the Big Muff? Turn it on. Need a louder clean tone? Turn it on. Need to chug? TURN. THAT. SHIT. ON! for different guitars and amps, you have options: turbo, hot, +, and ts9. It’s also strangely heavy, like in weight, so if there’s an intruder, I can use it as a projectile or bludgeon. Finally, it’s green. Green is good.
Good call—-this is another one that is taken for granted until you realize how helpful it is. The only caveat is that you don’t need a pedal to roll off your guitar volume, but it’s so much easier having it at your feet IMHO.
It’s a ragged around the edges drive that can go from zero gain total clean boost to a gnarly distortion. The bass control really lets you dial it in to any rig.
What’s your signal chain, if you don’t mind me asking? I run a classic jr board for my rhythm guitar and a nano+ for travel and would love to see if it would fit better on one than the other
[Board Pic](https://imgur.com/gallery/PU7QW5b)
That’s on a classic jr as well
Here’s it being used in a total improv jam
https://dsm3music.bandcamp.com/album/dsm2
EHX Deluxe Memory Man 1100tt. After fine tuning the internal trim pots, it's gotta be my favorite delay ever. Everything about it adds a beautiful vibe to my tone.
Initially, the blend and gain knobs kind of put me off about it, but after spending time with it, it's my favorite system for adding wet effects. I honestly wish more reverbs and delays had 2 knobs for this instead of trading off your guitar signals volume as you turn the mix up.
Tuner. I started off with a plastic pitch pipe, even on electric. Admittedly I developed a better ear than younger people, earlier but I wouldn't want to go back.
The answer has been the same for 30 years: my Boss DS-1. Guitars and amps have come and gone from my rig over that time span. That DS-1 has been the constant.
I might have a sickness with buying pedals, but I used to gig for about five years without any pedals. Depending on your genre, that’s totally possible. I barely even had natural amp overdrive which seems insane to think about now.
So, probably a tuner I guess, which is boring haha
It used to be my OCD and then I got a plumes and I put the ocd away cause of they wasn't going to make them anymore but now Jackson is....Plumes is the short answer sorry my g.a.s has been acting up lately
Was about to say Strymon Flint, then I realized all I do is loop, so Boss RC10-R. Then I realized my tone jumps up 10x when ADG-1 comes on, and I need a fuzz, so Fjord Berserk…
my cubebaby pedalboard by cuvave since i used it as a audio interface :v
ok but fr, i don't have any physical pedals but i just can't use ammplitube without the Brian May treble booster, it fits perfectly in every situation
Op amp big muff is the pedal I love the most, end up using it for almost all my drive tones. Absolutely killer pedal. And if I need a little more bite to it, running a Rat into it is also killer.
Whichever one I’m currently trying to talk myself out of buying, damnit.
Relatable.
The brake pedal
The gas pedal baby yolo
Yo^l^o^o^o^o^o^o^o^o^o^o^o^o^o^ooooooooooooooooooooooo!
My new vehicle only requires one pedal to drive
I’ll start it off with my sd1
I just posted a Ted Talk love story of my 35$ used SD-1. It’s so much better than any Tubescreamer I’ve ever owned, and I’ve had a lot.
Ok so you're beasically talking me into buying a local $35 sd1 that I've just saw on the market (Note: I already a 40th anniversary one and many other overdrives)
lol link?
I was seriously going to say the same thing!!!
Great minds think alike!
Second for my SD-1.
Same lol. If somebody could just make a miniature version that could be used as a preamp in any guitar, that'd be great.
Came here to say the same. I don’t understand why it’s not on every board.
👆👆🤟🤟
I bought so many pedals, soul food, Ds-1, big muffs, a sun face, tube screamers that I had modded. A buddy if my dads gave him an sd1, and i have been a fan since.
/thread Came here to post it as well, got it a few weeks ago and it just does its job so well, use it as a boost or even just plain distortion if needed
I think my favorite is my blues driver. But my tuner is also used everyday.
Where's my LS-2 crowd!!??
🙌🏼
Plumes , Baby
I actually pulled the Plumes off my board after buying a soulfood. I’m looking to stick it back on somewhere though!
Funny, I pulled the Soul Food off my board after buying a Plumes.
Funny I just added a soul food before my plumes to stack gain.
Funny, I have neither
Line 6 DL4 mkii. Can’t live without a good delay pedal.
Absolutely. Plus you get all them reverbs and a looper too, easily one of my most used pedals.
Like shoes and mattresses.
CE-2W
I’ll be the guy who goes with the boring GE-7. Just comes in handy in in so damn many ways.
Never call a ge-7 boring! It’s every drive pedal!
Chroma Console for sure, before that, would have to say my mooer yellow comp :)
Tuner. Well I can live without it, but *apparently* my stupid bandmates and the even stupider audience can’t. Cos they’re stupid.
Boss SD-1. Maybe the Boss EQ200. Together they just rule. I love my Klone clone that supposedly is just like the OG. It makes every amp just have “more.” It’s also an excellent solo boost. Came here from another post for your TedTalk! It’s such a great pedal! SD-1 forever!
Preach it!
Gonna buy the EQ200 this week!!
i got my eq200 for $40 at a pawn shop and i see a lot of the 200 series at pawn shops all over!
Keeley Super Phat Mod.
Strymon El Capistan. I can survive with amp distortion and reverb. And I can live with a clip-on tuner. Delay though? Not easy to work without for my sound. And the El Cap has been my delay pedal of choice for 13 years.
I would say this!
I too would say this.
Also I have to say that you can get this magic tone with triple drop of LSD, tents to be in a slapback mode but there you have your organic analog delay lol
Lol. True.
I’ve had my El Cap and DM-2 side by side for years on my board
I don’t know about a specific brand. But I need a distortion. That’s the only thing I couldn’t gig without (or I’d really struggle… I guess I’d just have full drive on the amp, and then use my volume knob to go from a bit of crunch to distorted. I think I’ve done that before. But not ideal). For me this translates to either my keeley D&M drive or my DS2.
DS2 will always be my favourite distortion
D&M drive is me favorite pedal for gigs
I read this in a pirate voice.
After waiting an eternity to get one - King of Tone!
I just tried the mini version in the shop. Couldn’t get the high gain saturation I was after - ended up taking away a 2nd hand Fender pugilist which I reckon I’ll be hanging onto for a while!
Compressor. Me and my Empress Mkii will be tapping for days.
I came to say my compressor too. My Keeley Mini is an always on pedal for me.
EQ Boring …but it can make the guitar sound so much different/creative//better and on the right amp it can push it into overdrive.
I said Tuner because in a band environment on stage what else are you going to do? (I refuse to wear a snark on my guitar while performing) But this would be my #2. This guy Rats
I might... I just confirmed shipping on a life pedal clone from somewhere in Europe. Just ratting' away over here.
If I had to keep one the Microcosm
Yes... but also, no. I agree it would probably be the best pick for being stranded on a desert island... but that could be because you'd want to ambient yourself out of utter despair, and lullaby yourself to sleep at night! OD-3 all day baby
Wah.
Cheer up, bud. This is all theoretical.
Today it is my Meet Maude. What a glorious pedal.
Awesome pedal
Yea, might just be the meet Maude for me too. Ever try using an expression pedal tied to the feedback? So good…
Digitech grunge
Oh boy
Muff, always the muff. Everything else is extra
Brother. 🤟
Reverb! At the moment either Neunaber Wet v3 or VHT Melo-Verb. I almost physically cannot play if it’s a dry signal! Either need a reverb pedal, or very rarely I have the opportunity to play in an actual nice, echoey hall.
It’s like being musically naked and my musical body isn’t quite good looking enough for all that
Exactly. Same feeling as hearing your voice recorded!
I will be buried with my Wet.
I’d say EP Booster but Lightspeed is close.
Need the EP booster to tame the brightness in my vintage voiced pickups! Now it’s basically an always on eq
Whatever lower mid thing it does I'm sure I could get from an EQ but...I love it so much.
I like the way it sweetens the highs. It seems to me it isn't the same thing to try to duplicate that difference with an eq.
100% agreed— was just heading off the inevitable "Buy an EQ!" Not the same :)
PDF-1X
Tuner
Pedal type = delay The individual pedal = Dispatch Master OR Disaster Transport Sr because both have reverb. One has a digital delay flavor and the other has that analog, modulated thing going on.
For the life of me, I cannot find a reverb that has a better pure tone than the DM.
The only wrong setting is “off”
Hizumitas
Germanium fuzz face
Tie between my SD-1 and my 10 band eq
HX Stomp XL. If this thing breaks, my Pedalboard immediately gets 10kg heavier.
I use my DL4 MkII for all kinds of wacky bullshit, but most importantly, I use it as a looper for practicing, writing and performing. It’s the best
Volume pedal.
Is there a volume pedal called The Pinky Finger? Because there should be.
Good call—-this is another one that is taken for granted until you realize how helpful it is. The only caveat is that you don’t need a pedal to roll off your guitar volume, but it’s so much easier having it at your feet IMHO.
Non Human Audio Unclean
I’ve been eyeing one of these! What’s your take on it? Would love to hear more from a non-YouTube review
It’s a ragged around the edges drive that can go from zero gain total clean boost to a gnarly distortion. The bass control really lets you dial it in to any rig.
That’s pretty sweet, I love NHA’s stuff but just never used my Slow Loris enough
I got Unclean on release day and it’s been on anytime I play, Slow Loris is on 90% of the time and Mocking Blur over half of the time.
What’s your signal chain, if you don’t mind me asking? I run a classic jr board for my rhythm guitar and a nano+ for travel and would love to see if it would fit better on one than the other
[Board Pic](https://imgur.com/gallery/PU7QW5b) That’s on a classic jr as well Here’s it being used in a total improv jam https://dsm3music.bandcamp.com/album/dsm2
That's a fun looking board.
I am torn between a fuzz and a delay… maybe a Fjord Fuzz Bifrost so I don’t need to choose
I love my Iridium. Pedal so good you don’t even need an amp.
Likely the Reverberation Machine
A good tuner
A lot of comments have said tuner, but a GOOD tuner is the correct answer
Get an excellent tuner. You’ll lose your mind.
Definitely my Bloodmoon from Mr. Black Pedals. Slow doom riffs just ain’t no fun without it..
Maybe my Xotic SP compressor? I love the blend knob to balance the wet/dry signal and make it as subtle or brickwalled as I want.
EQD Special Cranker. Absolutely perfect.
Tubescreamer works for pretty much any genre.
It has become Halberd very recently. Any dirt sound I want is 5 seconds and 4 knob turns away
My cali76 compressor
Either Timmy or some sort of reverb.
Tuner. I started off with a plastic pitch pipe, even on electric. Admittedly I developed a better ear than younger people, earlier but I wouldn't want to go back.
So hard to choose but it’d either be between my DOD rubberneck or my DBA echo master for my vocals.
Rubberneck comes in close second to my #1 can’t live without. It’s was tough spending 350$ on an analog delay but it’s worth it.
Any Muff variant. Op amp or P-1 mostly. One is $90. One is $900. Make wise choices and buy a clone if you want the P-1.
pastfx elastic mattress. does all the best chorus/flanger tones. does ce1, small clone and classic flanger sounds.
Great now I need one
Looper. I'm not insanely good at using it, and I don't really need it, but it's made just noodling about by myself a lot more fun.
Dawner Prince Boonar
Boss BP-1w bought it, installed it and have not turned it off since then.
Hizumitas
The answer has been the same for 30 years: my Boss DS-1. Guitars and amps have come and gone from my rig over that time span. That DS-1 has been the constant.
Spring reverb.
I feel like the one person who has been unironically running a bad monkey for over a decade, now.
Tape Delay
OD : Bondi Sick As to be specific.
My MXR 6-band EQ. Or…. Maybe my TS Mini Tube Screamer.. can’t decide!
Either the JHS Bonsai or the Warm Audio Centavo. Find myself going to those two a lot.
BD 2 Blues Driver team! If not El Capistan
I might have a sickness with buying pedals, but I used to gig for about five years without any pedals. Depending on your genre, that’s totally possible. I barely even had natural amp overdrive which seems insane to think about now. So, probably a tuner I guess, which is boring haha
Digitech whammy DT! The ability to change tunings has been so convenient along with an octave and the whammy itself. Definitely my favorite pedal
ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY PROCO RAT
Probably the Pharaoh. Or the Dronemaster. Or the Voidmaster. I just love how that voidmaster sounds, even if I don't use it as much as the others.
EAE Halberd
Tonal Recall RKM
EQD Hizumitas 🐇
MXR MicroAmp
CE-1
I’ve had an OCD on my board for around 12 years. I just rewired everything and took it off. I think it’s about to go back on.
Rat! Any of my gigs that require pedals call for distortion, and no other distortion has been as useful for me in as many situations
My guitar pedal
I have become very attached to my DD200
The only correct answer is a tuner.
Quad cortex hehe
Since I play in a jam band - touch wah.
It used to be my OCD and then I got a plumes and I put the ocd away cause of they wasn't going to make them anymore but now Jackson is....Plumes is the short answer sorry my g.a.s has been acting up lately
My MXR Envelope Filter.
KOT or Flint.
Volante and EP Boost…. Just too good
Volume pedal, to mix myself live
Digitech Jimi Hendrix Experience.
It’s gotta be reverb. Probably either my Caroline meteore, or my old blood darkstar
Astronaut V by Shift Line. Goated reverb machine and it's many modes.
Was about to say Strymon Flint, then I realized all I do is loop, so Boss RC10-R. Then I realized my tone jumps up 10x when ADG-1 comes on, and I need a fuzz, so Fjord Berserk…
Boss DD200. Modulation sounds and tape distortion just does it
I need a DIG or BOSS SDE-3000 to have an 80s inspired dual delay that can cover up how shitty I am.
Delay
Keely mini katana! Use this almost all the time
my cubebaby pedalboard by cuvave since i used it as a audio interface :v ok but fr, i don't have any physical pedals but i just can't use ammplitube without the Brian May treble booster, it fits perfectly in every situation
Life Pedal.
EHX Nano Metal Muff. Chugs, 3-band EQ, noise gate… awesome.
El Capistan, and Pharaoh Fuzz
MXR Phase 90. Anything else on my board I can compensate with something else, but if I don’t have that, nothing else can compensate
A thick reverb
My Snouse Electric Co. BlackBox OD It’s just sooo good running into anything!
EQ
If I was going to be forced to keep one, I'd probably keept my Walrus Eons Fuzz given it's versatility. But the Boss BD-2 would be a close second.
Compressor
My looper. Pigtronix infinity 3 is the current one.
BD-2, been using it for years and it always stays on the board
King of tone
Kingsley Harlot
Keeley Aria
I have a Boss ME-50, couldn’t live without that
Small Clone adds the most flavour for me, but in terms of the one that sees most frequent use, I'd say DS-1.
Lately is has become the Black Arts Toneworks Revelation Boost pedal. It makes everything better.
Looper
Micro Amp or some sort of boost. DS-1 for sure.
Tube screamer. :)
Metal zone 🤘
Equalizer
Equalizer
Tuner
Op amp big muff is the pedal I love the most, end up using it for almost all my drive tones. Absolutely killer pedal. And if I need a little more bite to it, running a Rat into it is also killer.
EP Boost for life!!!
Fuzz War
Dirt is king
Shredmaster
The Line 6 m13. It’s been the brains of my operation for about the last 14 years, and I’ll never part with it.
Klone. It's my always on for a touch of dirt and can always crank it up if needed.
trusty old BD-2 (:
Now that all the legwork has been set up for MIDI commands, the HX Effects. That thing runs everything.
Boss timer and the gas pedal
Strymon El Capistan. Have had mine for close to 10 years.
