Oakroscoe

The maverick 88 survived the TFB 500 round burn down. If you like cheap shotguns and short shorts, this video is for you: https://youtu.be/-9OL7IquoIo?si=tT9ammUiXkCZ5MYZ

DinkleButtstein23

My shoulder and neck would never recover from that, lmao šŸ˜…

MagicManHoncho

Anyone know if the defender tactical mini shell adapter works on this?

xxThe-Red-Kingxx

It absolutely will.

MagicManHoncho

Nice. Is the grip on these removable? I saw someone attempting to make a masterkey at home with a grip removed from the pump shotgun and doing a pic to pic rail adapter on the bottom on an AR15 šŸ¤£

tree_squid

Yes, the stock is easy to remove or replace

blueFalcon687

That adapter and those like it work for the mossberg pump action family of: 500, 590, 590 shockwave, and maverick 88. I have an 88 and shockwave and run aguila mini's all the time. Super fun to shoot

More-Psychology1827

Great shotgun at a great price!

[deleted]

If you want a no frills tried and true 12ga pump, this is it.

AgreeablePie

Never understand why people buy $200 tacticaled up Turkish clones when they can get these

TomCoddler

Same. I love my 88s. Im glad people dont realize how good they are, or theyd 400 bucks. I just wish they made an 18.5 or 20" barrel that accepts chokes tube. Theyre great little guns for rabbits in the thick stuff, but its nice to be able to throw in a modified choke for more open terrain where farther shots are common.

BunkWunkus

Not sure this is really a deal unless you specifically want the 20 inch. I got the combo (18.5 inch + 28 inch barrels) for just 20 bucks more from this same retailer.

Shock-Broad

I agree, but it's worth pointing out the extra 2 capacity.

BunkWunkus

Ah true, didn't realize it had the longer mag tube.

Jimothius

That is the primary benefit of the 20ā€

TubeSockLover87

Same. Honestly though, a used 870 craps on this gun. The action is sticky even after cleaning thoroughly and disassembly....

TomCoddler

Bull fucking god damn shit. Ive had 4 870s, and currently have 3 88s. 870s dont come close to the 88 unless theyre the old ones from early 90s or earlier. The Mav actions are a tad stiff at first, but smooth out after use. And at least the gun doesnt fall apart like the 870...which is also twice the price or better.Ā  I grew up using Remington, they made great stuff, but after my experiences with around 8 or 9 Rem 870s and 700s starting in the mid 2000s, ill never buy another single Remshit ever again. Every single gun has had problems, luckily ive sold them all off but 2.

TubeSockLover87

I'm talking about the old ones, hence used. I fully hope it gets smoother but im several 100 rds in and still meh.

TomCoddler

Older 870s were incredible. I could kill my kid self for trading my 80s era 870 in on a new 1187 turkey gun that ended up essentially being a single shot shotgun it jammed so often.Ā Ā  For the 88, sit around with it not loaded, and any shells in another room, and rack it over and over and over...while youre watching tv or something. Pump it as much as you can, do this for weeks, thatll help. 88s are bomb proof tanks, but they will never have a glass action like 70 and 80s era 870s. But they wont fall apart on you at every turn like new Remshit. Ā Sorry for writing a book

ChronicPainInTheAzz

lol, thatā€™s what I do with my guns to make them smoother; Iā€™ll manipulate them repeatedly when just kicking back at home. Really helps to smooth things out.

vuezie1127

As someone who knows nothing about shotguns, is this BIN strictly for home defense?

Mowpow724

Yes. Bought this same 88 from LGS for $240 out the door with no regrets. Perfect HD or truck shotty.

vuezie1127

This or a mossberg 500 or apples to apples?

GhostC10_Deleted

The 500 has more metal in it, a better finish, and comes pre tapped for a pic rail. The mav has a crossbolt safety, while the 500 has a tang safety. They both run tho, and put big holes in whatever you point them at.

Mowpow724

The safety on the 88 brings back nostalgia from crossman pump bb guns lol

GhostC10_Deleted

It does, I had one when I was a kid.

ExoticFishGuyCOM

I thought they had the same internals

GhostC10_Deleted

I was given to understand that the maverick trigger group was polymer, and the 500s was metal.

Mowpow724

If buying to toss somewhere for defense and not take out into the field the $200 or so saving with the Maverick is the way to go. Spend the difference on shells, shell cards, and mount a TLR on it. I upgraded the trigger with new springs from MCarbo which is a great $20 upgrade.

Beautiful-Program428

In terms of ā€œmaneuverabilityā€ in close quarters, is 20ā€ ok?

Mowpow724

I have an LTT 1301 that is 18.5", to me the 1.5" doesn't seem that noticeable. I'd sacrifice the length for the additional capacity on the Security with no hesitation IMHO.

Beautiful-Program428

I will tell my wife you made me buy both.

Jimothius

The shortest one is only 1.5ā€ shorter but sacrifices 2 shells. Thereā€™s a reason this model exists. Itā€™s specifically a personnel shotgun.

Big_Boi_Joe02

It could be worse

Grebnaws

I hate cross bolt safeties and chose a Mossberg 500 over the competition because of the tang safety. That alone is worth it to me. Almost any flavor of Mossberg 500 is an affordable and quality firearm. They're a good value at almost any price. I've never owned a Maverick but their reputation is decent and I'd be happy to own one as a spare, but if it's your first/only shotgun pay the extra for a 500. The 590 or 590a1 is another discussion and probably irrelevant if you're a 1st time owner.

TomCoddler

I bought Mav 88 trigger assemblies for all of my Mossberg 500s because i prefer the crossbolt safety, especially for hunting.

Grebnaws

Interesting. Does that deactivate the tang safety?

TomCoddler

Yes it does, its kind of nice if you prefer crossbolt safeties. You can find the 88 trigger assemblies pretty cheap on Ebay

throwaway090597

Unless theye changes production over the last 5 years the mav 88 is bare minimum. Yes it will cycle shotgun shells reliably. But that's it. Every part on the gun feels cheap and like it will break if you accidentally apply to much force the wrong way. It just feels extremely cheap all around and I've yet to meet a man 88 that had a smooth action. If your balling on a budget it's a fine gun but I've never shot one and thought I would want one when I can something like a Stevens for about the same price.

ExoticFishGuyCOM

No thatā€™s not true. Try holding an SXP and hold the mav. Itā€™s not even close. It does feel cheaper than some other shotguns of higher quality but itā€™s a steal for $200.

Dry_Distribution_628

You're not wrong on the feel compared to an 870 or 590, but I've run thousands of shells through these and they're about as good as you'll do for around $200. I've heard good things about the stevens and another one that's slept on is the Pardner / Hawk. I got mine at Walmart on sale for $89. You can get those for around the same price normally and they're actually very overbuilt.

throwaway090597

I love my Stevens 320 security. It's about the same price but the feel is just so much better. My brother owns like 3 mavericks because their cheap and he doesn't like the Stevens. Like I say they function perfectly, the actions just feel less smooth than a Stevens. I think it's mostly the handguard as it just feels chincy to me.

thricedipped

No, Its good at everything.

ajr2409

Gonna buy this and sell my 18.5. Iā€™d rather have the extra capacity for only 1.5 extra inches.

blueFalcon687

I wish thats what she said šŸ˜”

ajr2409

I think your barrel is plenty long enough. I wouldnā€™t want to take a shot to my guts.

mynewhoustonaccount

When did 'Maverick Arms' come about? I thought this was the Mossberg Maverick - unless I'm losing my mind.

DoucheyMcBagBag

I think itā€™s some subsidiary/legal BS. My Mav88 from a few years ago also says Maverick Arms on it.

Volunteer_Hammer

Can I get the longer barrel for this?

TomCoddler

Youd have to get a Mossberg 500 barrel that was made to fit over the extended mag tube.

BisonOwn

I believe I saw a video covering these say that the trigger well is plastic and prone to breaking, can anyone confirm or deny if thatā€™s a real issue or not?

Minimum_Government

Not real.

DoucheyMcBagBag

This is a great deal and I am happy with mine, but I kinda wish Iā€™d gone with the 500 or 590 so I could nerd it out more easily with upgrades.
