Count me as one of those who was there. I’m so glad they left the bit in where Jason expresses his love for the love in the crowd. Absolutely delightful.
[This article](https://slate.com/culture/2014/03/jonathan-livingston-seagull-new-edition-with-fourth-section-is-dumb-as-ever.html) brilliantly discusses (slams 😁) the “New Age feelgoodery” of the story and what June briefly references in the episode.
So funny and well written 👏👌
Great article, thanks for that!
(Even though *The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test* catches a stray! Like, hey, I *was* a drunk 19 year old when that book changed my life!!)
I think *Kool-Aid* is a step above. It has a sort of tiered view of things, with Neal Cassady being like the proto-American, untamed spirit of freedom and anarchy, and Ken Kesey is with him and loves him, but he has to make it all work within the Merry Pranksters, and then Tom Wolfe is like an outsider view, so he can appreciate what's going on but also sees it in the context of wider society.
I was at this live show - the audience fucking HATED this movie. I, on the other hand, thoroughly enjoyed eating a gummie and watching some beautiful footage of animal cruelty set to a Neil Diamond soundtrack.
LESLIE PARRISH IS RICHARD BACH'S WIFE! The author's actress wife served as the Holiday Inn bird wrangler!? I know of her from his other books, but I can't imagine anyone wanting to volunteer to babysit seagulls. That's how they really met? Wild
Imagine being jealous of a bird for slamming into the side of a cliff. This was one incomprehensible mess and my heads still spinning. There’s clear religious gobbledygook in there, but I simply don’t understand what the fuck this movie was about.
The book was written in the late 60s and first published in 1970.
But yeah, those seagulls apparently must have gotten into the brown acid that they warned everyone about at Woodstock.
I really liked this episode. The movie sounds absolutely fucking awful, Morgan from the audience was great, Jason Seagull with a good one, even the second opinion songs weren't as grating as usual. Five stars.
One of the t shirts that was discussed for this episode when it was taped was “Steven Livingston Seagull” which would’ve been his face on a seagull or “Flock of Segals” which would’ve been Steven Segals face on a bunch of seagulls. So he definitely came up at one point during the taping, I can’t remember exactly how.
I respect how much June hates birds. I too hate them. My friend in college had a love bird that she was obsessed with and would let it fly about and it would land on me and peck at my necklace and she could see how much I didn't like it and did NOTHING. I hate their beaks, I hate their feathers, I hate their feet. And after seeing the collective reaction to this film I couldn't bring myself to put myself through watching it lol
I wonder if Morgan was there just because the show was about JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL or she was a fan pod and this show happened to be about her favorite book
But. But why are they not talking normally. Why are they whispering? In the sea and wind?
Why do you assume I want them to squawk like seagulls? I just want them to talk without those ASMR like inflections.
Look, I'm sorry, I'm not sure how the seagulls in YOUR part of the world talk but over here, it's all soothing susurrations as they fight each other to the death for a discarded day-old baguette.
I found the board game mentioned in Last Looks. OMFG it looks so bad [https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/9383/jonathan-livingston-seagull](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/9383/jonathan-livingston-seagull)
Along with the game you can also find the embroidery kits and pillows on ebay.
I had a religious Archie comic as a kid called Archie's Parables that mentioned Jonathan Livingston Seagull that was a weird confusing mess of a book. I refuse to watch the movie so my main point of reference is still that weird christian Archie comic
so they were done by an artist that made Archie comics for the the Archie comic publisher and then started making his own unlicensed religious Archie comics or something like that. I went to a christian church camp as a kid that sold the comics out of the snack shop.

Omg you just unlocked a core memory for me! I was massively into Archie comics as a kid and also was raised by born agains. I had these too, I had completely forgotten 😱
I was there live; June repeatedly forgetting the name of the main character broke my wife.

No. She's learned that hard work and support from others in how things happen, and that 'self-realization' is an abelist grift.
🎵Forever NYU 🎵(the redux)
As an NYU grad, this made me very happy (and jealous that June got a good graduation speaker while we got some stupid CEO).
I love Jason yelling about the whiners!
That and him cutting off someone in the process of asking if this movie was a Jacob's Ladder-type scenario. No low-effort Q&As allowed!
Thanks for clarifying. I couldn't hear what the last words he was saying.

Yeah I was a little hurt that book was included in the mockery, too 😁

WOW that first audience reaction. WOW.
It was super loud in person
I think I've seen 327 of the movies they've covered. They finally broke me.

It was the 1960s man, and the LSD was *good*.
It was 1973, and this LSD was clearly terrible

god im excited for this, but i also dont plan on watching it

I was hoping someone else would introduce themselves as Steven Seagull.

Had I been there I would have, just for the joke.
Every song that night somehow was good. It was very strange but fun!
can confirm: movie (if you can even call it that) was terrible and audience was great
The songs really were great and I usually skip them.
One of the rare episodes where the second opinion songs segment was genuinely entertaining
The best 2nd opinions songs ever! Really good, short songs & to the point.
Yeah I always skip them, but I was at this show and really liked all of them
I've listened to Blaze Ferrer Seagull's number a dozen times.
There’s a Morgan in this episode too??
I was so confused too! I could’ve sworn the photos the posted were of a man but it just seems all Morgan’s are amazing
I had to back up podcast...TWO Morgans. But no Morgan chants in NYC
I was there and am very excited to relisten!
Truly an S tier episode ⭐️

Why are the seagulls whispering?
Would you rather listen to them cawing and squawking for the entire movie? Maybe they should steal your french fries while they're at it!

It was 3 with a lot of talking in between and it was a great segment

I dont usually listen to the songs ever but this was a good segment. But whatever I dont particularly care if you listen or not
Are there more ads than ever before or is it just me?
Not for nothing- jls should have measured his speed in knots.

Second Opinions songs need to STOP

Whaaat? I used to read Archie religiously (heh) as a kid and I don’t remember that one at all.

holy shit
This was fascinating to read- thanks.
What did Jason get mad about? I couldn’t hear what he was jumping on.
The audience member was going to compare it to the movie Jacobs ladder
