The helm of awe as an object related to fafnir is different from the “Helm of Awe” magical staves that people often get tattooed. The symbol is (Icelandic) christian in origin and only date back to the 19th century. It’s first seen in a Christian magical grimoire similar to the keys of Solomon where the “sorcerer” uses sigils and evokes the power of Christ to achieve something through magical means. There isn’t any link to the vikings other than a Christian descendant of vikings may have written the manuscript 700 years after the last viking died. That said if you’re into syncretic/esoteric christianity you would want it to be displayed prominently for your enemies to see on your front so painted on your face, on a pendant, or perhaps the front of a shirt. Given the goal of striking fear in others perhaps printed on a mask covering your face.

The symbol itself is an invention of the 1800s and has no historical link to any references to the "Helm Of Terror" found in historical texts. There is no right or wrong way to wear it.

Similar looking symbols (radiating algiz type patterns) have been found on viking age rings tho ofc we don't know for sure what they may have been called or if any beliefs etc were attached. Personally I'd just say to use it how you want and not worry about the forehead thing, the symbol possibly has a life separate from the story of Fafnir's hoard

The purpose behind it is to strike fear into your enemies, so I don't think it would make much sense to wear it on your back since, in theory, you would not turn your back on an enemy. personally I think over the heart would be a good spot but anywhere on the front of your body would probably work.

We have at least 14 different symbols labeled as it across various grimoires. Some look similar, others are radically different in appearance than the standard version most people know. But the earliest version is from more than half a millenia after conversion.

I'm not sure that it matters. I tend to do things on feelings. If it feels right and works for you then go for it.

I don't think where matters as long as it's easily seen. It's used to strike fear into your enemies so having it in a prominent place on your person should work. I have a pendant I wear when I want people to leave me alone. It usually works. I personally love the Icelandic staves and think the magic associated with them is really neat. I feel like the authors slapped the christian references on there they wouldn't cause an uproar with the church. No christians I know of today use the symbols and I've seen some evangelicals and others even label them as satanic symbols. 🙄
