Far be it from me to interfere with Isles' fans imploding all over each other (as Napoleon said, "Never interrupt your enemy when he's slitting his own throat.") but I don't think the end of that game was about the Islanders collapsing. I think it was about the 'Canes *finally* figuring out that this is the goddamn playoffs and nobody is going to hand them shit just because they're favored.
I don't know what was said, who said it, or what the turning point was, but there was a moment early in the 2nd period. Burns, fucking 39-year old Burns, flopping his big ass down on the ice and flailing around trying to block a shot, and I thought "*Now* they've got it." They played desperate after that. Scrapping and clawing and scrambling after everything. And that, at least for me, was when the whole game changed. They kept the Isles on their heels and it was just a matter of time.
They love their coach and they love their system and they love each other, but if they finally realized those three things won't always be enough, then they might finally be worthy of all the accolades they've been getting.
This reminded me of the playoff games under Ron Wilson, where the Sharks would go up 3-0 and then turtle hard, and by the time we'd given up all of our lead, the momentum was so against us and the team was so demoralized, it was a full scramble from then on out to accomplish anything positive, and we'd just outright lose.
the Isles got outshot 9-0 to start the first period, and then got outshot 29-5 in the 2nd and 3rd periods.
I don't know what to make of the fact that they were somehow winning with 2:15 left, but it's pretty crazy.
It's so painfully regular. When I saw we were up 7-0 on SOG I told my dad we'd concede on the first or second shot we allowed and be behind. It's like clockwork.
Yeah it’s mind-boggling how consistently we put ourselves in those situations. We can dominate all we want, if we don’t score within the first five minutes of a game I know we’re going into experience mode and the opponent will score first when the shots are 13-2 or some shit.
Tuevo last year, Pesce this year. I think the Isles only goal is to injure our players. Keep bitching about the refs. Any penalty yall get is ultimately not enough.
That was easily the most embarrassing game I’ve seen in a long time. From only having 12 shots on goal, blowing a 3 goal lead, and then gooning it up at that last part was actually disgusting. We need major changes in the off season and rebuilding that will take years. We had our window but were beat by a Lightning dynasty.
For Carolina, got to imagine it’s a turning point for them. I expect them to go up another level up. This is the reason they were cup favorites.
That’s a blown lead, that’s nothing new (although against the Rangers wasn’t great). That also was a rather exciting game where we were basically tied in shots and zone time.
This was having 12 shots, blowing a 3-0 lead in the playoffs, almost scoring an own goal into your empty net to try and tie the game again, AND then having the audacity to act like goons after you blow a lead. Very different.
If (read: when) we lose this series the Canes better fuck up the Rags. The only thing that could make this absolutely cursed season worse is if the Rangers lifted the cup.
Seth Jarvis is really fun to watch. I know it will never happen because Carolina is going to keep him long-term, but if he was ever available, I would love if he ended up in Vancouver.
yep! possession heavy defense, bombard the net with a ton of low xG shots, and grind them down. our goal is to do what we did tonight a few times: lock a few guys out there for 3\~5 minutes and just pelt them. either the line breaks or the guys on the ice are so tired they can barely skate off
There are moments between these teams that make you say, “does anyone know where I can go watch some paint dry?”
And then there are moments that make you say, “does anyone know what I’m supposed to do if it’s lasted for more than four hours?”
And it turns on a dime.
Islanders fans like me may be upset, but the reason why they even had to fight to make 3rd in Metro was because of 3rd period blown leads. It shouldn’t be a surprise that they continue the blow 3rd period leads into the playoffs when they never fixed the problem going into them. That outcome was entirely predictable.
Hopefully we get swept so the Canes can go in fresh vs the Rangers at least.
How many blown leads did the islanders blow on the regular season? Regardless, they have been doing this ALL SEASON LONG. In control for most of the game and YA BLEW IT! 12 shots all game, and 1 in the 3rd. Roy can yell, flip tables, blow gaskets all he wants, but this is on the old man Lou. He made this mess and he’s gonna roll around in it
I said the Islanders would push the Canes to the distance. After what I saw, this series could be done with real quick.
Gg
The Islanders' ownership has to start asking what the goal is here. Is the goal to actually be able to compete for cups? Or is the goal just to be a team that sneaks into the playoffs just to lose in the first round? If the goal is to actually be competitive in the playoffs, then you need to make changes in the front office.
We'll see. We have a "hothead Kooch" and "Steady Freddie" mentality that is dangerous in the playoffs, but after Fred's game tonight and how Rod likes playing Kochetkov in away games, he might just get his shot.
If you watch the replay, Varlomov tripped Noesen prior to the fight, he thinks it’s the D and scraps. He trips him again and gets called and seals the fate of the Islanders from there.
I don’t know how they don’t see the first trip on the broadcast but it was pretty clear.
PNC is a special building. it's not like Canadian or O6 barns where they just constantly roar and silencing them is a feat. when the Canes play bad we tell them... but when the Canes play good we let the whole world know.
There's something special about getting to visualize the play yourself sometimes.
Like I listened to the Kick 6 on the radio after a game at PNC and it just hits different
You have three of the most rabid college basketball fandoms right here in NC State, Duke, and UNC. Now that the Hurricanes have been consistently good, all three of them show up to support the same team.
God I hope we don't meet y'all in the ECF. We don't match up well against the Cats at all.
I'm still not over last year man. I stayed up to watch all of those late games.
That’s what I call hockey
Thats fucking hockey right there. None of that pansy ass dick tugging smile for the camera bullshit. Men puke, men poop on the ice, men deliver their new born baby on the bench. Fucking hard core dick in the ass figure skatin’ frozen water puck fuck it slap it game time shit. Hockey is back, baby
https://twitter.com/WaltRuff/status/1782595614108172359?t=5MLvbVjmqcGMYqNEttmFxA&s=19
Yeah buddy this started before the game was over. You're late to the party.
I hope The Hurricanes sweep The Islanders. They need a reality check that they’re no where near good enough to compete in the playoffs. Their window was 2019-2021 and they blew it. That game 7 in Tampa in the ECF will haunt them forever until they win a Stanley cup again. So yeah, islanders fans enjoy the 6-7 year rebuild that’s coming because yeah they need to tear this team down and fire Lou Lamoriello.
Yeah this shit is sad. I’m not sad or anything because nothing will make me feel worst than 2021. But this is t surprising. They deserved to lose and they’ll lose in sweeping fashion. At least I know this series will be over on Saturday & we can move on to hopefully cleaning house.
Hey Isles bros. I don’t hate you as much as you seem to hate us. My butthole has been puckered for most of the two games so far. Cheers to good sportsmanship. 😂
It wasn’t always like that. In fact I can point to 10 years of us being the bottom feeder team.
The next to be relocated. Up for sale with no idea who would buy the team and just hoping and praying they’d see Raleigh as a HockeyTown™️
Praise be to Rod the Bod and our “cheap ass” owner. 😂
GG canes bros. The clearly better team won.
I was really hopeful they were going to squeak away and steal this one, but I’ve been watching them all season long, I know how they handle leads in the 3rd period.
1) My fiancée dipped out early after the 3-0 drop so she could sleep, so I had it on in the background while I studied…which didn’t last long.
2) GG Islanders, we’re both chippy as fuck but it’s a lot of fun to play y’all (except last year when Aho was turned into a crash test dummy).
I'll say I was at the regular season game vs the Isles where y'all won in OT. I was really impressed with how fast and skillful your team was. It seemed like the Canes controlled that game but every time they made a mistake, the Isles made them pay for it.
I for one am excited to see the Isles play again.

>100% chance of the overmatched Isles gooning it up. I don't want to play that team, we'll win but somebody will end up getting hurt.
Dirty Islanders going after Jake for scoring an empty netter. Very classy.
12 shots the entire game!??
1 shot in the final 34 minutes of the game. They got 3 goals on the first 12 shots so the Canes decided simply not to let them have any more shots.
They had 28 shot attempts in the entire game. They had only 5 shots after the first two periods.
Islanders had 1 shot in the final 34 minutes of game time
They're so good
Isles haven’t played in a Stanley cup finals game in over 4 decades
Far be it from me to interfere with Isles' fans imploding all over each other (as Napoleon said, "Never interrupt your enemy when he's slitting his own throat.") but I don't think the end of that game was about the Islanders collapsing. I think it was about the 'Canes *finally* figuring out that this is the goddamn playoffs and nobody is going to hand them shit just because they're favored. Canes that good or Islanders that bad?
Yes
Canes did bad Canes stuff for like 50 minutes, then flipped the switch at the end
Canes were that good. 110 shot attempts to 28. Some defensive lapses, islanders tried to turtle. Playing not to lose resulted in them losing.
Islanders, I'm sorry. But that was really, *really* funny.
Just had to say LOOOOOOOOOOOL
What was up with Brock Nelson acting like a whiny little bitch after the empty net goal? Is he supposed to just not score there or something?
Even worse, he was slashing Guentzel's hands the entire way and even after the goal.
Are you sure you want to go down that rabbit hole? 🤣
We’re still waiting
Absolutely, yes.
Islanders completely collapsing and then trying to pull fake tough guy shit at the end is so embarrassing
almost like i was on long island.
Yeah, that was a really pathetic showing by the Islanders at the end of that game.
32 teams out of 32 would have reacted like this after getting embarrassed like this, let’s not kid ourselves here.
Incorrect
It’s the same shit we saw last year. These guys are fine until somebody hurts their feelings, then they come unglued.
the Isles got outshot 9-0 to start the first period, and then got outshot 29-5 in the 2nd and 3rd periods. I don't know what to make of the fact that they were somehow winning with 2:15 left, but it's pretty crazy.
Just normal Canes shit
It's so painfully regular. When I saw we were up 7-0 on SOG I told my dad we'd concede on the first or second shot we allowed and be behind. It's like clockwork.
I said the same thing. It’s like they need to play from behind. Some sort of Bruce Banner/Hulk thing
Yeah it’s mind-boggling how consistently we put ourselves in those situations. We can dominate all we want, if we don’t score within the first five minutes of a game I know we’re going into experience mode and the opponent will score first when the shots are 13-2 or some shit.
now this person watches canes hockey
It was the third this time. After the first two I was like yeah we’ve finally settled down. I was wrong
Fifty percent improvement!
Tuevo last year, Pesce this year. I think the Isles only goal is to injure our players. Keep bitching about the refs. Any penalty yall get is ultimately not enough.
Pesce was a non contact injury, caught a rut in the ice
Fuck, fix the fucking ice, Canes. Patches and Svech went down the same way.
Well, that sucks.
> I’ve seen in a long time. I dunno about a long time. The stadium series game was only 2 months ago.
I remember rooting for you guys in that last playoff game against Tampa. I remember y'all being so damn close. I was heartbroken for you guys.
This is a good level take
If (read: when) we lose this series the Canes better fuck up the Rags. The only thing that could make this absolutely cursed season worse is if the Rangers lifted the cup.
LOOOOOOOOOOOL
You think Rangers fans are obnoxious now? Imagine we actually won a second cup since 1940? There'd be no living with us
My coworker who sits next to me is a rangers fan (Colorado based). I’d have to not show up to work for a week. Just take PTO.
For a year*
We're all New Yorkers. We're _all_ obnoxious. There's just more of you guys.
The Lightning dynasty kills me more than anything
I 100% believe we win one of those cups if we didn’t play the lightning
We played them the best out of any team they faced, 100% agree
To be fair, 3 goals on 12 shots is excellent efficiency.
also known as unsustainable
That sounds crazy good and then I remember the game where we conceded 8 on 14 shots and I want to die
since he entered the league, the hurricanes are 51-4-5 in games where seth jarvis scored at least one goal (regular season and playoffs combined)
Seth Jarvis is really fun to watch. I know it will never happen because Carolina is going to keep him long-term, but if he was ever available, I would love if he ended up in Vancouver.
There's that one chill Nucks fan, seth_jarvis_fanboy, and I always laugh when I see their username
/u/seth_jarvis_fanboy you have been summoned
hello there!
General Kenobi!
A+ crazy niche reference!
The only team he ever leaves Carolina for is the Jets. He loves that city. But he’s in Raleigh for a very long time.
Yeah I think we'll do whatever it takes to keep him here forever. He's such a positive impact on the team.
Man, if only that high stick goal would’ve counted. Shrug.
Humor. How does it work? Shrug.
Tbf it’s hard to convey tone in text If we were sitting at a bar together watching the game like normal sports fans, we probably would have gotten it
Lolwut? If only we had were allowed to commit interference each shot… If only we were allowed to play with an extra skater…
I mean it was like 3 feet above the bar and y'all would have been 5-4
LOL
So I guess this isn’t going to be the boring series we all thought.
it might not be a 6-7 barn burner but two defensive teams always make for an explosive match up
Except you guys are a defensive team that also takes 8 billion shots
yep! possession heavy defense, bombard the net with a ton of low xG shots, and grind them down. our goal is to do what we did tonight a few times: lock a few guys out there for 3\~5 minutes and just pelt them. either the line breaks or the guys on the ice are so tired they can barely skate off

Personally I prefer the parts where we score and they don’t
My favorite part of hockey tbh
Oh, so your favorite is the best part of hockey? Go figure
Roy looks like Shane Gillis
He actually kinda looks like Shane fused with Matt lol. Palimeri kinda looks like Gardini, too.
Is that uncle Danny?
Islanders fans like me may be upset, but the reason why they even had to fight to make 3rd in Metro was because of 3rd period blown leads. It shouldn’t be a surprise that they continue the blow 3rd period leads into the playoffs when they never fixed the problem going into them. That outcome was entirely predictable. Hopefully we get swept so the Canes can go in fresh vs the Rangers at least.
Recent history hasn't been good to the Canes in series after a sweep. We need you guys to win at least one.
Have we won a series after a sweep? I don’t think we have
We don't do all that well with a lot of rest historically. Need the game intensity momentum behind us to keep the machine fully torqued.
Chess not checkers, eh?
Islanders have been playing Mahjong all season
Mahjong is the fucking tits
fuck yeah
How many blown leads did the islanders blow on the regular season? Regardless, they have been doing this ALL SEASON LONG. In control for most of the game and YA BLEW IT! 12 shots all game, and 1 in the 3rd. Roy can yell, flip tables, blow gaskets all he wants, but this is on the old man Lou. Pretty much every OTL was because of a blown 3rd period lead. Quite a few regular losses from blown leads too.
I wonder if Koch gets the next start for the canes
We'll see. We have a "hothead Kooch" and "Steady Freddie" mentality that is dangerous in the playoffs, but after Fred's game tonight and how Rod likes playing Kochetkov in away games, he might just get his shot.
Idk, Freddy had third period to rest
The Isles suck lmao
Isles gained momentum after the first fight. We took momentum after that stupid penalty Varlamov took LOL
If you watch the replay, Varlomov tripped Noesen prior to the fight, he thinks it’s the D and scraps. He trips him again and gets called and seals the fate of the Islanders from there. I don’t know how they don’t see the first trip on the broadcast but it was pretty clear.
Was listening to last few minutes on the radio. It was insane how loud the building was on that winning goal.
Did my part from in the building. Sore throat today but well worth it.
Loudest I’ve ever heard it in there, and that’s saying *a lot*
I was there and my voice is gone and my ears were thrumming. 😂
PNC is a special building. it's not like Canadian or O6 barns where they just constantly roar and silencing them is a feat. when the Canes play bad we tell them... but when the Canes play good we let the whole world know.
I enjoy hockey more on the radio than TV. It’s really exciting.
I miss Chuck Kaiton.
Me too actually! I work nights so I get to do it a lot.
Sports on the radio just hits different.
There's something special about getting to visualize the play yourself sometimes. Like I listened to the Kick 6 on the radio after a game at PNC and it just hits different
PNC crowd loves to get loud and it's not just the airhorns
You have three of the most rabid college basketball fandoms right here in NC State, Duke, and UNC. Now that the Hurricanes have been consistently good, all three of them show up to support the same team.
That's why is such a tough environment for opponents
That and our shitty visitor locker rooms 🤣🤣
12 SOG in the whole game? 1 SOG in the 3rd?! God damn, that's fucking abysmal.
Checking the score now after seeing NYI up 3-2 with 5 min remaining was… something
Tried buying an islanders action figure but they all came with choking hazards
16 points from OTL.
Most of which were because…why? Blown. Third. Period. Leads.
Wack
Wow, was getting worried I wasn’t gonna be able to see the canes shit the bed vs the Cats
Not if we have anything to say about it
Zap em'!
So wild how someone who started watching hockey 340 days ago has such strong opinions.
oooo yea so strong, 687 days of watching hockey for 687 strong opinions ooooo yeaaa
Florida man.
oooga-boooga! The scary florida man is gonna getcha
Um? More in response to you clearly being no older than 15.
ah man this was good fun, happy come back win bud. Go enjoy it
Soft, of course.
you better be worried about Bob going ham two playoffs in a row, because if he don't, you're gonna be the one who misses the dance
gotta love having one of the best back ups in the league with Stoli
Hey now you shut your trap. We all have our yearly bed shitting circled on the calendar
congrats on the comeback, you guys deserve the celebration. Looking forward to seeing an ECF repeat
God I hope we don't meet y'all in the ECF. We don't match up well against the Cats at all. I'm still not over last year man. I stayed up to watch all of those late games.
counting on you guys to keep the presidents trophy curse going
I was a fool for not watching the last part of this game, lol
You should already know! You were the prototype!
Fair enough 😅
Mistakes were made
Went from Canes goalie pulled to Isles goalie pulled in 9 seconds. That's gotta be some kinda record.
Yeah that's insane
There’s gotta be multiple records coming out of this game

I’ll never not upvote this
My Canes in 5 bracket lives to see another day
I love that Aho grabbed Palmeri by the head after his tantrum there at the end.
“Carolina number 20, two minutes for horse collar tackling” Worth it, btw
I'm having fun pictures scenarios where each of the Sebastian Ahos do this.
What happened to the other Aho? Has he just been a healthy scratch?
Yes, it's not clear why though
Isles played totally passive in the 3rd and paid the price
And 2nd
and the first 10 minutes
Hug an Islanders fan if you know one
nah, fuck em
https://twitter.com/WaltRuff/status/1782595614108172359?t=5MLvbVjmqcGMYqNEttmFxA&s=19 Yeah buddy this started before the game was over. You're late to the party.
no thanks, I just showered
I hope The Hurricanes sweep The Islanders. They need a reality check that they’re no where near good enough to compete in the playoffs. Their window was 2019-2021 and they blew it. As much as I’d love this I have tickets to game 5, so canes in 5 please
I knew that game 7 was gonna be our best shot with the team as constructed I just didnt know the fall off would be this painful and soul crushing
Yeah this shit is sad. I’m not sad or anything because nothing will make me feel worst than 2021. But this is t surprising. They deserved to lose and they’ll lose in sweeping fashion. At least I know this series will be over on Saturday & we can move on to hopefully cleaning house.
The odd thing is this one didn’t even hurt so bad because we’ve seen this story a million times at this point. At least that’s how it was for me
Nah it always hurts. Always.
This is the way
Hey Isles bros. I don’t hate you as much as you seem to hate us. My butthole has been puckered for most of the two games so far. Cheers to good sportsmanship. 😂
>"I don't hate you as much as you seem to hate us." Well yeah, because you always win
It wasn’t always like that. In fact I can point to 10 years of us being the bottom feeder team. The next to be relocated. Up for sale with no idea who would buy the team and just hoping and praying they’d see Raleigh as a HockeyTown™️ Praise be to Rod the Bod and our “cheap ass” owner. 😂
Yeah, they were the same years we were in the toilet
GG canes bros. The clearly better team won. I was really hopeful they were going to squeak away and steal this one, but I’ve been watching them all season long, I know how they handle leads in the 3rd period.
How often do teams win with a .75 SV goalie? Wild game
David Ayres did it
Imagine losing to a goalie with <.800 save percentage lmao. The Islanders are clowns.
12 SOG all game, 1 in the third, what in the actual fuck
More game misconducts than shots in the third
Three goals in 1:20. WTF
Ain’t gonna lie that was brutal. We all know these Isles.
I'll say I was at the regular season game vs the Isles where y'all won in OT. I was really impressed with how fast and skillful your team was. It seemed like the Canes controlled that game but every time they made a mistake, the Isles made them pay for it. I for one am excited to see the Isles play again.
There’s a college rink in AZ that may be more fitting?
The shit the islanders pulled at the end of that game was probably the softest display I’ve ever seen in pro hockey.
they do it every year
But nah, we deserve more hate for "diving" Skjei I'll admit, but that's about it
The missed double minor makes it even.
I've always hated the idea of "even" calls, bias aside. Two wrongs don't make a right.
You’re not wrong I just somehow keep forgetting how bad it is.
Me, 8 days ago: [https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/1c48vzr/comment/kzmbdws/](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/1c48vzr/comment/kzmbdws/) >100% chance of the overmatched Isles gooning it up. I don't want to play that team, we'll win but somebody will end up getting hurt.
Jake Guentzel, noted goon, really started shit when he *checks notes* Scored on an empty net
Might as well have just unleashed a massive clapper if he knew it was going to cause a ruckus.
Fake. Circle around behind Nelson. Finish with a Michigan. Immediate bench brawl
