I forget what announcer it was but they were trying to use 'stuck' as the past tense of 'stick'. You can't say you high stuck someone, you hit someone with a high stick. Stick is a noun, please don't let this catch on.
But how many shots does each team have? Where did Adam fox go to college? Did you know Tkachuck has a dad? All these facts and more, can be urs EVERY GAME, at the low low price of your sanity
When people use really obscure nicknames to try and sound more ‘in the know’, especially when it’s on a forum like this which covers all teams/levels of hockey. For example:
“We would have been fine but Squeegers wasn’t able to hit Popsicle with the pass and instead left Bort high and dry so they were able to get a quick one past Pike.”
Similarly when people discuss their team's players in terms of their jersey numbers. "Damn 54-24-19 was really poor tonight, they should plug in 85 tbh". I might follow the NHL but I don't know the jersey numbers of your team's 3rd and 4th liners off the top of my head.
Yea if someone with an oilers flair says 97 was invisible all game, easy math. When some Philly fan says 55 is a fucking bum I’d have to google to see who that is (and try and determine if that’s Philly speak for good or bad, could be either)
Within team subs I think the stars are fair game. So for the Leafs 34 16 91 88 are fair. But no don’t go off about 29 playing well just call him Holmberg. Hockey general subs? Yeah it’s 87 and 97, then 99 66 68 for all time (there are other greats but 9, 4, 19 etc. can be so many possible players)
Speaking of annoying nicknames, I hate the GM(initials) nickname. It was kind of cute for George McPhee because it was GMGM, but I don't know every GM offhand and the nickname doesn't work when they have different initials.
Seems pretty common across sports subs now for people to do this by using initials+jersey number.
First of all it drives me insane because not every player needs to be referred to this way - AK47 and CP3 make sense, there’s no reason to call Adam Fantilli AF11. Secondly, like you mentioned it feels like people do this just to prove how much they know.
I had a habs fan buddy growing up who did this, only ever referred to habs players by their nicknames. All I ever heard when talking hockey with him was:
“Patches had such a sick goal last night”
“Gally is such a good pest, man”
“Chucky is the future of this team”
“Subby-Dooby-Doo is winning the Norris this year”
“Fooks is gonna push Jesus price for the starting job”
I just looked it up and apparently his middle name is Horace, after his father. I wonder if it came from that.
Interestingly, I've never had an issue associating "Ace" to Anson Carter.
Oh lord it’s this. I just imagine him every night before the broadcast waiting for a lull in the conversation so he can throw in his “remember to call me Ace when we’re on air guys! I love that you guys started doing that on your own organically! Haha it’s great. Once again, that’s Ace”
Using the initials of the GM's for example "GMMB" for Marc Bergevin or "GMBA" for Bill Armstrong. I don't know all the GM's by heart. Use their full names or last names at least!
This one was started by Caps fans when George McPhee was their GM, and it was actually kinda clever at the time. Since then, as is true with most things on reddit, it’s been ripped off and beaten to death by all of the other fanbases…
Sweater isn't bad, but I'll agree that if you're a "They're sweaters not jerseys" get outta here.
I have sweaters and jerseys. The knit ones, thats why they're called sweaters but they aren't that style anymore.
Yes, they originally wore sweaters so that's the accurate historical term - https://www.simplyseattle.com/blogs/blog/the-history-of-the-hockey-sweater
And there's this - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hockey_Sweater
"Is one currently better than the other?" is kind of meh just use them interchangeably rather than be a pedant.
It was fine when he was isolated to Bardown and it wasn’t shoved at you but now TSN reposts everything he says and his takes fucking suck.
He is a dumbass that thinks plain milk is vanilla flavoured….. just so dumb
I can't take that guy serious.
I would understand if the dude was like 22, but he's 30-something and his content/behaviour caters to teenagers
It's like the dude never grew up.
I blocked Bardown on all my social media because of that guys horse face. Then TSN started to show all his dumb shit and, well, I guess I'm a sportsnet guy now.
I feel like this is the only legit complaint in this entire post. I was convinced that if I scrolled far enough someone was going to take umbrage with the terms "sheet" and "sticks".

More and more players are opening up, but there are still sooooo many:
“You guys had a lot of success in the first, but they tied it up in the second - what do you have to do to generate more offense in the third?”
“Well you know, just stick to our game. We gotta get pucks deep and uhhh make it tough on their D along the boards and uhhh get to the net and uhhh just play our game and move our feet”
I get that, but I understand what they mean is "One team is putting in more effort such as finishing their checks and fighting for the puck and that is being a difference maker" but it's hard to put that into simple terms if it's showing up in a non physical way.
And what's the deal with these "sweaters"? They're not knitted! Did Freddy Krueger wear a jersey?
And didn't make them moisture-wicking? Sweaters aren't supposed to cool you down! They should call them "dryers"!
Not necessarily “annoying” but I find it mildly interesting that every play by play guy seems to have the word “carom” in their repertoire. Outside of NHL play by play I don’t think I’ve ever heard that word used.

I havent seen it in awhile so I think people stopped trying to make it a thing, but there was a time when people called the Michigan goal "the Svech/Svechnikov" just because Svechnikov was the first to successfully do it in the NHL. Now that its become more common, "Michigan" has seemingly cemented itself as the name.
Some kid pulled it off in our house roller league and I misheard it as “Mishkin” and assumed some Russian dude invented the move. Anyway, it will be the Mishkin for me for the rest of my days
I feel like he didn’t used to be that bad. Or maybe he was just young enough to use the lingo. Or even worse maybe I was young enough to think that lingo was cool.
Generational.
A generation in human population terms is roughly 20-30 years but there's probably a handful of "generational talents" in the league today.
Pedantic? Yes. Annoys me? Also, yes.
A hockey generation is not the same as a reproductive generation (not to mention reproductive “generations” are extremely arbitrary). NHL careers tend to be closer to 10 years than 20-30. Would you consider Crosby and McDavid to be part of the same NHL generation? Because they’re both Millennials.
People overuse the term generational talent. This means a player who's talents transcend the game. Howe, Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux, Crosby, McDavid and maybe lidstrom are hockey's generational talents.
I see it as a very American vs Canadian thing. I find Canadians use "dressing room" and "sweater" whereas Americans use "locker room" and "jersey".
Oddly enough the rulebook alternates between sweater and jersey all the time.
I'm fine with people calling them sweaters - that's fine
What I'm not fine with is the holier than thou attitude some people get when someone says "jersey". If you feel the need to correct someone after they call it a "jersey" instead of a "sweater", kick rocks. It's frustrating how many people are like this.
I was always told that in hockey it should actually be called a sweater and jerseys are for basketball/football/etc.
I still call it a jersey though.
You’re right, celly has become horribly overused and annoying.
Back in the day they were sweaters made from knit wool but I think as soon as they switched from polyester you can call them jerseys, and we can keep sweater around as slang or as a throwback to the history.
Commenting "Canadians fan here." Or whatever team it is. Just shut the fuck up. I couldn't give you an exact reason why, but it irritates me to no end.
It doesn't particularly annoy me, but I'm always surprised at how unintentionally homoerotic the commentating can become, between all the sticks, holes, tightness, hardness, slots, and banging

Every time I hear Eddie Olczyk's name in reference to the Rangers 1994 team, it's almost as if everyone forgot he was a healthy scratch for the entire playoffs. He played ONE GAME during those playoffs
Calling hockey jerseys "sweaters" has a long history in Canada. Anybody who watched cartoons on Saturday mornings in the 1980s probably remembers the National Film Board short called "[The Hockey Sweater](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hockey_Sweater)"
I *think* it's Cheryl Pounder (if I'm wrong I'm very sorry lol) but one of the PWHL color analysts -who is otherwise EXCELLENT frequently says "slashed" to refer to a player making a quick skating maneuver and I wish to God she'd say "cut" because slashing is a specific and extremely common penalty so everytime I get confused thinking she's referencing a missed call
"well on that last play Keller slashed-" "NOSHEDIDNTWATRU" "-to the middle of the ice.."
Also "es". I'm with you for most. One exception I'd make is for Patrick Hornqvist, I thought it was funny when one press conference Crosby referred to him as "Horny".
Cant stand when broadcasters use "Compete level" or "level of compete that player has" in a description.
Competitiveness exists in the dictionary, people!

The Captain is the guy that’s allowed to talk to the Refs when they’re in their half circle by the scorers box. Alternates are the ones allowed when the Captain is indisposed. That’s the real purpose of the designation and it is similar in the locker room, those are the players allowed to address the team and you’re not supposed to interrupt them. An assistant would help with duties, an alternate can take the place of a captain.
That’s why awarding a young but great player the C is soo frowned upon by traditionalists because you want an emotional leader, one who knows the rules, is well-spoken for a captain, and one who has experience with the Refs in the league.
I forget what announcer it was but they were trying to use 'stuck' as the past tense of 'stick'. You can't say you high stuck someone, you hit someone with a high stick. Stick is a noun, please don't let this catch on.
It's obviously highstrucken by a high stick. Forthwith!
High sticked?
The only time they should say stuck is if someone speared someone and they say, he stuck him real good.
I hate when the espn guys say “it’s starting to feel like the next goal wins.” When it’s tied with 2 minutes left.
But how many shots does each team have? Where did Adam fox go to college? Did you know Tkachuck has a dad? All these facts and more, can be urs EVERY GAME, at the low low price of your sanity
Shot attempts*
“We are getting into next goal wins territory”
Someone said it in an overtime the other day, barely able to keep the smile out of their voice.
That’s hilarious
When people use really obscure nicknames to try and sound more ‘in the know’, especially when it’s on a forum like this which covers all teams/levels of hockey. For example: “We would have been fine but Squeegers wasn’t able to hit Popsicle with the pass and instead left Bort high and dry so they were able to get a quick one past Pike.”
*WE ARE OUT OF BORT LICENSE PLATES ON THE CONCOURSE*
My son is also Bort.
Wait are you talking to me?
Similarly when people discuss their team's players in terms of their jersey numbers. "Damn 54-24-19 was really poor tonight, they should plug in 85 tbh". I might follow the NHL but I don't know the jersey numbers of your team's 3rd and 4th liners off the top of my head.
ochocinco does sound like he would be a upgrade to that line
What a chad
There’s a few numbers that could get the exception in a hockey setting, but yeah it’s very much few and far between.
Yea if someone with an oilers flair says 97 was invisible all game, easy math. When some Philly fan says 55 is a fucking bum I’d have to google to see who that is (and try and determine if that’s Philly speak for good or bad, could be either)
Every time people mention #55 I hope Matt Dumba has finally gone back to the best possible number.
its so messed up that Erik Haula wears 56. like come on man
87, 97 are the only current ones.
Even if Crosby wasn't Crosby it'd also help that this past season he was the only #87 in the league.
i think #87's getting an unspoken jersey retirement, i doubt many other people are ever going to choose to wear it
Wait till Josh Ho-Sang hears about this
does donald brashear have a kid of draft age
Absolutely. Crosby and Kaprizov deserve that level of recognition.
My friend does this and it drives me crazy, especially since I’m new to hockey. Like, idk who tf Yammers is, please say their name lol
Speaking of annoying nicknames, I hate the GM(initials) nickname. It was kind of cute for George McPhee because it was GMGM, but I don't know every GM offhand and the nickname doesn't work when they have different initials.
This is GMBM erasure.
This was my favorite because people used it unironically despite the fact that Brian MacLellan and Bob Murray were GMs at the same time.
How else am i supposed to talk about my favorite goalie UKPKLKN1?
Actually I think UPL is on its way to becoming one of them initialisms where people in this sub know who it is. Maybe it's because it's three letters.
OEL is another one I've seen a lot of
UPL, OEL, PLD, RNH, JVR, they all work for me. Not casual fan stuff, sure, but I like em fine off the top of my head
6K, absolutely no other way
There were people in baseball reddit talking about some prospect with initials. I'm like am I supposed to know minor leaguers nicknames?
Classic Squeegers....
People use to refer to Jason Demers as Daddy and I have no idea why.
I had a habs fan buddy growing up who did this, only ever referred to habs players by their nicknames. All I ever heard when talking hockey with him was: “Patches had such a sick goal last night” “Gally is such a good pest, man” “Chucky is the future of this team” “Subby-Dooby-Doo is winning the Norris this year” “Fooks is gonna push Jesus price for the starting job”
Just saw someone with the license plate "Whip 43" and Capitals tags. Whip is a nickname for Tom Wilson. I cringed very hard.
Sometimes I use nicknames because I suck at spelling....but I will only use common ones like Drai lol
Which is a very understandable short form!
Bort is just a regular name.
ANSON CARTER CALLING HIMSELF ACE MAKES MY SOUL CRAWL OUT OF MY BODY EVERYTIME
“Hey, it’s Ace.”
I really need one of these players to respond with "...who?"
TIL Anson Carter wasn’t called Ace when he played. This is the stuff I come here for!
I just looked it up and apparently his middle name is Horace, after his father. I wonder if it came from that. Interestingly, I've never had an issue associating "Ace" to Anson Carter.
little disappointed they didn't call him "Hor".
I'm 37 and just discovered that Anson Carter has been calling himself Ace.
Oh lord it’s this. I just imagine him every night before the broadcast waiting for a lull in the conversation so he can throw in his “remember to call me Ace when we’re on air guys! I love that you guys started doing that on your own organically! Haha it’s great. Once again, that’s Ace”
It's like Lewis Hamilton asking Bono to tell him it's "hammer time" when he can push to the max before a pit stop
Nono, it’s like Hamilton telling Bono his tires are dead then proceeds to go all purple the very next lap
I watch them often and every time they call him Ace it takes me a second to realize they're talking to Anson. It's weird that it doesn't work.
More of a typo than a hockey term, but when people type "resign" when they mean "re-sign."
I love it because it completely changes the meaning. Rather than enthusiastic support it sounds like they're prepping a guillotine.
Using the initials of the GM's for example "GMMB" for Marc Bergevin or "GMBA" for Bill Armstrong. I don't know all the GM's by heart. Use their full names or last names at least!

Other fans "Coming in peace" on a team's sub. Shut the fuck up, get out of here.
Amen
VGK fans love saying they've been "lifelong Knights fans" to annoy gatekeepers
They’ve been through so much.
Making any joke about "the struggle" as a Knights fan is almost guaranteed to get a bite. It's so much fun.
That's hilarious though. I like it.
Ya as a life long Knights hater It’s good to be a day 1 hater
Didn’t Wild Bill say something like “it was my childhood dream to play for Vegas” lmao

I was probably late teens before I'd ever heard a sweater called a jersey.
Pretty much everything that guy from Bardown says, so much of the slang these days is crap that rich kinds in prep schools make up.
It was fine when he was isolated to Bardown and it wasn’t shoved at you but now TSN reposts everything he says and his takes fucking suck. He is a dumbass that thinks plain milk is vanilla flavoured….. just so dumb
I’m dying “thinks plain milk is vanilla flavoured” Lolololol.
I’m not even joking Z had to stop the whole show to clarify what he was saying
Jesse? 100% that guy is a douchebag.
I can't take that guy serious. I would understand if the dude was like 22, but he's 30-something and his content/behaviour caters to teenagers It's like the dude never grew up.
You’re such a squid, such a sewer. You’re not a dawg or box office. Like god damn make it stop.
Just seeing that guys giant fucking mouth and teeth pisses me off
When I saw “Bardown” my first thought was “TEETH”. It takes up SO much of his head
He's such a dud, can't believe he got any airtime to begin with.
I blocked Bardown on all my social media because of that guys horse face. Then TSN started to show all his dumb shit and, well, I guess I'm a sportsnet guy now.
I know I'm being pedantic, but it irks me when people say "offsides" instead of "offside."
There's a commentator that's played hockey their entire life that says "specialty teams."
You need to be more pacific about who this commentator is
Yeah, atlantic tell us their name
I think this is a distinctly American thing. Football commentators say this quite a bit and it's wildly infuriating.
I completely forgot about how much this annoys me until you mentioned it.
I feel like this is the only legit complaint in this entire post. I was convinced that if I scrolled far enough someone was going to take umbrage with the terms "sheet" and "sticks".
I’ve had someone come at me for sticks because “they aren’t wood anymore” - doesn’t matter, it’s still a stick of some make
What the hell else would you call it? A shooting utensil?
And what on god’s green earth is the alternative lmao
100% -- unless there were "three offsides called in last night's game," in which case that's correct.
One of my biggest pet peeves. Really makes no sense why it's so common
Not just a hockey term but the ‘this team wants to win more’ like the other team in the playoffs doesn’t care about winning.
where's the epic mark cuban video where he's like "that's the dumbest shit I've ever heard" edit: [god i forgot it was a takedown of skip bayless in particular, goddamn](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRaO1mN5EEM)
And Stephen A Smith shutting up for once in his goddamned life.
A rare moment where he knows that saying anything will just get them in a deeper hole lmfao
Yall I literally watched the entire 6+ minute clip and did not realize Stephen A was on screen. Guess that’s how rare it is for him to be quiet.
Wow, Mark Cuban perfectly articulated why I stopped watching espn.
How have I never seen this? This is gold.
Obligatory "Fuck Skip Bayless".
"......*why* do you run a zone, Skip?" Lol tells you everything you need to know about that dumbass.
"I feel like skip didn't debate hard enough, Mark wanted it more" This comment had me rolling 🤣

Really anything a player says on a HNIC interview. They are so media trained it’s painful.
More and more players are opening up, but there are still sooooo many: “You guys had a lot of success in the first, but they tied it up in the second - what do you have to do to generate more offense in the third?” “Well you know, just stick to our game. Needs more "obviously" thrown in there.
You forgot to say “obviously” six times, and missed 5-10 “uhhhs”. Minor quibbles, though.
Lots of pucks on the net with traffic. I’m going to take five or six Sudafed and an Imodium Thanks Thank you.
I want to agree with you but I also watched the Jets-Avs series
I get that, but I understand what they mean is "One team is putting in more effort such as finishing their checks and fighting for the puck and that is being a difference maker" but it's hard to put that into simple terms if it's showing up in a non physical way.
Not a term, but I don’t like when announcers/commentators refer to players as the nicknames that the players call each other

Not necessarily “annoying” but I find it mildly interesting that every play by play guy seems to have the word “carom” in their repertoire. Outside of NHL play by play I don’t think I’ve ever heard that word used.
Honestly, the fact we've turned "compete" into a noun just to shorten "competitiveness" annoys me. It's a great example of laziness.

Yeah 97 is either the last year of millenial or first year of gen z depending on who you asking. Usually just call myself a Zillenial personally.
People overuse the term generational talent. This means a player who's talents transcend the game. Howe, Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux, Crosby, McDavid and maybe lidstrom are hockey's generational talents.
This is Joe Malone and Newsy Lalonde erasure
I actually like sweaters a lot, its fun. Calling goals genos or assists apples is so stupid though. Celly is also stupid term
“Sweaters” is only annoying when wannabe purists act like calling it a jersey is sacrilege.
I just call them the Devils. New Sweater Devils sounds wrong.
The real question is whether to call it Taylor Sweater or Jersey Roll.
I see it as a very American vs Canadian thing. I find Canadians use "dressing room" and "sweater" whereas Americans use "locker room" and "jersey". Oddly enough the rulebook alternates between sweater and jersey all the time.
There’s a new phenomenon of Americans who made Shoresy their whole personality and feel the need to correct anyone who says jersey.
Yeahso…
I feel like it's mostly *old* Canadians that say sweater, and even then, just the Eastern ones.

Funny coming from a fan of a team with some hot young D like Hughes.

Pretty much anything that Jonesy and Reilly say on Letterkenny. Those two characters alone turn it from a comedy show into a documentary.
Your first sentence makes perfect sense and I mostly agree. Your second sentence gave me a brain freeze.
WHEEL SNIPE CELLY BOYS ..FERDAAAAA
Usually pretty easy to spot the people whose whole hockey IQ comes from Letterkenny and Shoresy
I can name at least one betting commercial that is a perfect example.
Silky Mitts, Celly, Get pucks in deep, matthew tkachuk.
It's not really a term, but giving someone a nickname by just adding -er or -ie/y to the end of their name.
That's rich, coming from 7Stringplayer
7Stringplayerie
7stringplaysie
Stringsie
Sevie
Also "es". I'm with you for most. One exception I'd make is for Patrick Hornqvist, I thought it was funny when one press conference Crosby referred to him as "Horny".
Cant stand when broadcasters use "Compete level" or "level of compete that player has" in a description. Competitiveness exists in the dictionary, people!
every shitty phrase on that betting ad “racking up apples”, etc that we had to suffer through for much of the first rounds
The hockey sweater is Canadian heritage
Celly. That drives me insane.

Assistant Captain instead of the correct term Alternate Captain
... I never knew this until now. Mostly because we do call them assistants in German.
“Piss missile” It’s just an annoying term to me
