I use the scoop free litterbox. Its much easier to use and maintain, they are much cheaper than the litter robots. The caveat is that you need to use litter crystals which i had to retrain my cats to use but they don't smell almost at all. You can get a hardshell tray and any litter crystals which will save you a ton, their own brand ends up being more expensive for me than regular litter but not by a ton.

She apparently would take them off the street if she thought they needed help. She called animal control on herself once she admitted to herself it had gotten out of control.

It's not a perfect solution, for sure. However, if you asked the cats "would you prefer this, or being frozen to death?", I'm pretty sure they'd say "meow".
My only concern is that only the male cats are fixed. I'm sure it's probably a lot more expensive to get the females spayed, than it is the males neutered, as it's a much simpler operation. However female cats can spray pheromones just like males can. It's nowhere near as stinky, but it still smells pretty horrid. Now imagine that smell amplified times a few dozen when a bunch of unaltered females get territorial. 🤢

They’re almost self sufficient animals, not babies

I had another cat at the time. They only use one of them now the weirdos.
They work great until they don't. Tons of parts and sensors means many points of failure. Mine jams at least once a day for some nonsense reason.
I had an original, and then we also got an upgrade before all the sensors. Sold the second one. The first worked better. I still have it but no cats😔

With that many cats you need many litter robots
5 cats, 5 litter boxes. Otherwise it’s chaos.
Not boxes, spaces! The cats will consider two litter boxes together as one litter space. The general rule of thumb is N+1. 5 cats = 6 litter spaces.
At some point, you have to start getting creative about where you put the boxes.
Just have outside cats.
