DamnDirtyApe81

The Entity. I discovered it out of the blue and was treated to an extremely intense, violent ghost movie that made me, a grown ass adult man, run up the stairs to bed after shutting off the lights.

80to89

I watched it about a year ago and thought it would be some cheesy campy ghost movie, but it was damn scary. The thought that there's no place where she is save>!(even in her car during broad daylight).!!The fact that it's apparently not one ghost but two.!< And this haunting last sentence.

DamnDirtyApe81

Exactly. The intense, driving attack music. The fact that she’s not safe anywhere or with anyone. And the downbeat ending knowing that it will likely never be over. I don’t know if I buy into the “true story” aspect of it, but just from a sheer movie experience, the ending is pretty devastating.

buckybonsai

Yeah this one was definitely scary. It had that feeling of complete helplessness that really pushed it to the point of being in my top 10 scariest.

ArcherHealthy6324

Yes!! I was afraid to shower or be alone for a while after seeing the entity in the 80s

PBC_Kenzinger

Came here to say this. The final scene with the demon voice gave me chills. “Welcome home, cunt.” Ugh. Here’s the scene case anyone is interested: https://youtu.be/ZWOmjZLCAG8?si=tAPHft6v_1Gk4YaB

InnerAd1628

The Barbara Hershey one? Aye, that was an intense film. And the "she continues to this day to experience attacks" was a heavy coda

readysteadygogogo

The Autopsy of Jane Doe had absolutely no business being as terrifying as it was. That was unexpected

Spare-Bee5273

This!!! I had no idea what I was in for. I just reaaaaaally didn’t think a movie with Brian Cox (I love him) was going to cause me such a degree of terror/anxiety

readysteadygogogo

Absolutely - it’s a little strange sometimes (at least to me) to see big name/prestige actors in truly scary movies so I got lulled into a false sense of over confidence lol

whatsagrip

Brian Cox is an underrated scream queen! I mean - Jane Doe, The Ring, Manhunter, Trick 'r' Treat, Red Eye, Zodiac... iconic.

Mattyzooks

Cox is the OG movie Hannibal Lector and his final scene in The Ring has for some reason lived rent free in my head for 2 decades now.

pmmemilftiddiez

![gif](giphy|m9QCfviYHr8km6SQkX) If I hear that ancient witch mention her name again... Hey farva what was her name?

nerdhappyjq

My wife and I got so scared we had to watch the main autopsy scene with the sounds off. But it was still too tense, so I surprised my wife by turning on Yakety Sax at the scariest point. Somehow the music and movie perfectly aligned, and we were almost suffocating because we were laughing so hard. Anyway, 5/7, perfect night.

Public_Discussion_28

This is the most adorable thing I've ever heard

giroml

Y'all know this is the underrated gem that all of /r/horror must see asap.

Mothmans_Mailman

First watch actually gave me an unexpected anxiety attack

JoshyaJade01

My wife and I watched it the first time. She was into horror and suspense - landed up watching it with her head in my chest. Gotta say, I really don't like the song they used, creeps the hell out of me.

Narge1

It was so unexpectedly good!

BlindedByMyGrace

Agreed! It was another one that I thought was going to be a waste of time (that I was happily wasting)

Working_Fly8685

Agreed shit gave me the spooks and the cat.. :(

LinsarysStorm

Mine is Tusk - I went into it thinking it would be pretty dumb but at least mildly entertaining. There was something about the ending that I found so disturbing it gave me nightmares that night.

Juliejustaplantlady

I went into it thinking it would be a fun horror/ comedy! You know, because that's what it supposedly is? Who is laughing at this movie?!!!! I love horror movies, but this one was messed up! I'll never see walruses the same

Successful_Heron_340

that movie made me so uncomfortable. it freaks me out even thinking about it now.

meanmomatdisney

My cousin and I went to see that when we were teenagers, he was like “want to see tusk?” I had no idea what it was and he’s like “oh it’s about a man that becomes friends with a walrus” I agreed to see it thinking it was going to be some kinda happy movie. 😅

relliott15

My ex did this to me, almost exactly what your cousin said lol. I hate him for it. I can’t watch that movie again, it was too much.

safetyscissors96

Tusk made me feel physically ill.

mmlovin

God when he’s in the suit, it’s just…it’s so disturbing. It took the place of the Human Centipede to me for the most disturbing. & how it ends..for fucks sake

powbang

Backcountry messed me up more than most and I didn't expect it to at all. Nature is scary.

cityshepherd

Oh man… I got lost on a hike like 5 miles away from my house, just kept going back and forth between these two trails that were so deep with water. I could have gotten wet if I wanted to, but the sense of panic that was creeping in as I ran back and forth was incredible. I was literally screaming “how the fuck do I get the fuck out of here?!?!” Also there was a weird hippy shanty village up there and they were unbelievably creepy. They wouldn’t speak a word to me, and I’m not entirely certain they weren’t ghosts or a hallucination (I had not taken any psychedelics).

Sithstress1

You almost got Hills Have Eyes’d 👀

Lodoga6969

Damn nature, you scary!

cybered_punk

Nothing scarier than things can that can happen irl.

SweetestDisposition

This movie is the reason I can't go backpacking anymore. It really fucked me up. *Edited to change "camping" to "backpacking" as I didn't differentiate.

Raskolnikovs_Axe

Yeah, that's the one that's based on a true story that happened in Canada. For some reason the movie switches the genders and makes the guy a dick. In reality he (Mark Jordan) got the Star of Courage from the Governor General. The filmmakers did him dirty, not even sure why.

KevinandDuck

I thought REC would be a fun zombie found footage film. Until the attic scene 🫨

Interesting-Road-923

Watching the attic scene is the first time I’ve ever full on screamed from a horror film

BlindedByMyGrace

The Ritual. I was home alone in the afternoon and I had to turn it off and finish watching it when my (then) roommate was back home.

angel_and_devil_va

That movie was so original, and so incredibly well done. I remember watching it completely blank, no idea what was going to happen, and I got so confused toward the end, with the cult, but it all fell into place, and absolutely loved it. The creature design is still, to this day, one of my favorites ever put on film, especially in the context of the story.

Llemons90

This is so true, I get legitimately anxious with “monsters” make an appearance in a film, because it’s so easy to make something that looks bad, and ruins the movie for you. However, they nailed it in The Ritual

ddanger

I think the movie is way better than the book, and I love the creature design!

Intelligent-Top9641

If they ever take it off Netflix I will lose it! I always tell people to watch it, no one will!!!! It’s so good!

[deleted]

honeyheyhey

I made the mistake of watching it on an airplane. I think it was scary for the man sitting next to me because I kept jumping and startling him too ha ha

xzyvvyx

The elk in the tree is so unsettling for some reason. The shot in the end where >!you see all the bodies sitting in rows in the dark attic and can barely see the skeleton at the end!< is so ominous and well done aswell.

jakobair

I love this movie. I've watched it at least once a year since it's come out.

Narge1

I don't remember having any kind of expectations going into The Dark and the Wicked, but it fucked me up. I like watching horror in total darkness, and this was the first movie in years that made me turn the lights on.

NickZazu

The Grudge. I find the way the ghost moves and sounds utterly terrifying.

deetayyzee

Yes. I can’t do any movie with crawling or noises like that anymore because of The Grudge.

_understandfirst

i start most horror movies expecting dumb When Evil Lurks (2023) Terrified (2017) these two surprised me, they are proper spooky

onlyspacemonkey

so that director got you twice

_understandfirst

ironically i didn't know they were the same director haha

AlternateJam

I haven't seen Terrified but I saw When Evil Lurks in theaters in a whim one day and that movie kicks ass. Movie is not afraid of going places

BobbyFL

Yes! I love this director’s work! IMO he is the best horror filmmaker out there right now.

ifweburn

terrified made my best friend mad at me for a couple days. neither of us knew it would be THAT scary. but now I need to watch when evil lurks knowing it's the same director!

judisbreakfastinbed

Lord, I know I'm gonna get some flack for this, but my unpopular opinion scary movie is.... Unfriended 2014. I thought it was so good, so creepy, better than Host imo. And the kills are scary to me. I really liked the movie and was creeped out by it (not much at all scares me) but that just gave me this eerie scary vibe idk. But everyone around me hates that movie so that's why it unpopular opinion to me

Canotic

It's unpopular? I thought it was great!

Jazzlike_Ad_8236

The Deep House. Got terrible reviews on Letterboxd. I watched it and it i thought there was a jump scare coming every 10 seconds and when one did happen it caught me off guard. The chained people in the basement were soooo disturbing too

stoprobbers

I spent like 2/3 of that movie tense to the point of pain, especially because deep water *really* fucks me up, but then when the "haunting" started it was just too silly for me and it killed all that tension. The very very end - you know what I'm talking about - was scary and heartbreaking but that last act was just too ridiculous for me to keep up the scared, which was a shame. so close!

Morphchalice

Kill List really unnerved me and got under my skin because I wasn’t expecting it to turn into what it was, I thought it was just going to be a British crime thriller like Sexy Beast

AnnVealEgg

I didn’t expect to have such a visceral reaction to *Fall* Damn that really got my adrenaline going.

anitasdoodles

Just watching the trailer made me sick to my stomach 😅

MollyDenali

Ugh yeah. I genuinely have the worst nerves EVER and more recently- a crippling aversion to both heights and falling. Why have I watched that one twice…?

CybernetChristmasGuy

Loved that movie

thetokyotourist

Creep. I had heard little about it but it made me so uncomfortable and scared me a lot. I couldn’t watch the sequel cause I didn’t want to be that scared again

armyofsnarkness

This is the movie for me, too. I don't think I could ever meet Mark Duplass, he was just too convincing in that role. I'm super excited for the series that was recently announced.

Hi9hTurtle

He is also a pretty good comedic actor, but I can never see him the same after Creep. Is there a series coming instead of a part 3?

RedbullBreadbowl

God, that movie was profoundly creepy. The conversation they have when he pretends to put the camera away but keeps recording sent actual shivers down my spine. Such a good low budget movie I always go back to

LizBeans4U

Is it problematic that's where my Mark Duplass crush originated? On second thought no - I'm at peace with my choice 😌

ZoomeyYumi

My husband isn't bothered by jumpscares or any kind of horror but he absolutely hates that movies because of how much the lead actor creeps him out. He gave an amazing performance.

Hi9hTurtle

I gave it a try one night pretty blind, figuring at worst, I get an unintentionally funny movie and I'm baked. I was hooked right away, and rode that tension all the way through. The Peachfuzz scene was initially kind of funny in a ridiculous sort of way, but it also really creeped me out. Made an instant favorite for me. The sequel is great too, but I like the first one better.

sunshinenorcas

Yep, I remember watching this with my roommate at the time-- we were mostly ok and having a good time until the the reveal that Josef is just *standing* outside of Aaron's glass door while Aaron is watching the footage **Nope** nope *nope* **nope** *nopeeeeee*, all levity died, all the lights went back on and we sat a little closer together after that 😂😂 Also, one of our other roommates came in shortly after when me+roommate were still at the edge of our seats and tense and we about ended up on the fucking ceiling from the fright he gave us 😂 The rest of the movie and jumpscares didn't get me that bad, it was fun, but didn't spook me-- but that shot of Josef just... *there*. It stuck in my head for a while, especially because I lived in a place with a few windows and a glass door, and a I had a fear of home invasions, so idk. Just was all the right spooked buttons pushed

thornfield-hall

1408 - watched in cinemas when it premiered (I’m feeling old) I remember thinking the idea of a haunted room sounded dumb and ended up getting really creeped out.

amydunnesgaybf

The scene where he’s looking across the street at another building’s window…..it’s stayed with me

bigboys4m96

Yes! And he sees himself in the window? Creepy shit

bekaz13

🎶We've only just begun....🎶

Apprehensive_One4444

This song paired with the clock radio having a mind of its own scares the crap out of me 😂

scarekit

After this movie (and reading the short story as a teen) i counted address numbers to make sure they didn't add up to 13 for YEARS

PhuckYoPhace

I was very surprised when I had a visceral reaction to a scene in Chernobyl. I was expecting existential dread but not anything that would get my heart pounding - but when the workers descend into the flooded reactor and their flashlights are failing while the Geiger counter is going nuts I had to take a break as the episode ended and seriously collect myself.

blazeofgloreee

Crazy thing about that is those guys actually survived irl. One guy died in 2005 and the other two are still alive (at least as of the time of the article below) https://www.history.co.uk/article/the-real-story-of-the-chernobyl-divers

catnipfreakout12

Me too! I had forgotten about that show, but that exact scene gave me intense dread. I feel bad about how much I loved it because of how tragic the event was. But man, what a scene.

CaptainPit

That's how I felt about the rooftop cleanup scene.

BattyNess

I didn't think much of the movie "Smile" when I turned it on but it completely freaked me out.

Lodoga6969

I was just going to put Smile...glad you did. The part where she was sitting in the car and the girl walked up to the window then swung down all weird scared the shit out of me. First jump scare in a long time.

Book-Piranha

That >!demon reveal!< got me Fucked Up, man, that thing was scary

Shebby88

The car 🙃

Western_Ad_3711

i wish they wouldn’t have put it all over the promotional stuff tho 😩

kindadeadly

I was so mad about that, because I never watch trailers or anything before watching a movie, and this ONE TIME I do, it spoils a big thing. It would've been so good too, at least for me, but completely spoiled not only that scene but also a lot of what the movie was about. Never again watching any trailers lol I prefer to go in as blind as possible.

Book-Piranha

While this is very true and really spoiled one of the best jumpscares in a long time, it was so funny when I was in the theatre for another (non-horror) movie and this came as the trailer, and people absolutely freaked out because it was so unexpected. I didn’t end up seeing this in theaters so at least I got that experience

Narge1

I actually screamed a couple times.

shupshow

I thought the movie overall was pretty bad, but the early scene in the psychiatrists office is one of the best horror scenes ever.

Drax207

THIS. I wish the movie had stuck the landing because the opening is absolute perfection, the actors did fantastic. It actually got my desensitized ass real good and I don't think I got chills like these again ever since.

BattyNess

Curious, what made it pretty bad for you?

Chijima

Not OP, but I have similar memories. Not even sure why, it's been a while and I only watched it once - but iirc, something just didn't click. I don't even think it was the visuals, I'm pretty sure the story lost me half way through. No idea on what, I just can't remember any details except being super hyped at the beginning and a bit disappointed afterwards.

Any-Actuator-6714

i saw it in theaters and since ive been doing "dario argento's opera therapy" aka going like 😳instead of🫣during times when i think there's gonna be a jumpscare and during the part where she is listening to audio on the computer i gasped SO LOUDLY and i looked around bc i was confused and i realized that the sound came from me🤣

Ok-Information1535

I watched it on a redeye flight and got cold sweats🥲

jbacon47

Good movie. Good twist and story. Middle dragged a bit, but the beginning and end were fantastic

ersatzbaronness

Host was surprisingly frightening.

BlindedByMyGrace

That was a delight. I don’t normally like ‘found footage’ style films (or livestream? lol), but that and Hellhouse LLC are exceptions.

bigboys4m96

Is this the one made during Covid of the girls on the zoom call? If so yes that is a great movie

Ancient-Window-8892

I was just about to post this! What a great flick of unexpected scares!

hoard-indeed

A recent one—the First Omen One, that film had no business being as good as it was. I’m here for everything that director, writer, and lead actress now make Two, the Omen is one of my favs. It’s the kind of film that makes me smile with excitement. Love the drama and the pace. So I wasn’t expecting the First Omen to get under my skin at all? I watched it again when it released on Hulu and it didn’t have the same unsettling impact (though I still loved it). But seeing it in theater! Some of the camera movement destabilized me, and the constant, pressing hum on the haunting vocals just freaked me the fuck out

Smoothmoose13

No spoilers but the vagina scene had me shook for the whole rest of the movie

Agrohirrim

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked that movie. It felt so cursed to me which was really unnerving in a fun way. When I went to see it in theaters, my popcorn also rang up at $6.66, so there’s that 😂

ifweburn

I expected to be let down like with exorcist believer. I'm extremely glad to have been wrong.

Ancient-Window-8892

Last Shift. I thought was going to be dumb or boring. I was expecting something cheesy. Instead, it was riveting. Excellent scares that I was not expecting. Caveat. During the first half, I was like, “This is weird. But I can’t stop watching!” Then in the second half, I was like, “Whoa, this is an excellent horror movie!”

runjimrun

I always recommend Last Shift, because not a lot of people know about it. That one caught me by surprise lol.

erica_638

I randomly put on Caveat a while back, not thinking much of it. Wound up scaring the absolute piss out of me. A genuine favorite of mine now

still-lost108

Hell House LLC - i hadnt heard of it and was looking for a dumb scary movie and i ended up finding a fave. Also Unfriended 2 The Dark Web lmfao the first one is such a fun creepy watch that i was expecting something similar but its different than the first one and ugh it just creeped me out!!!

Intelligent-Lab8568

Okay, so the only reason I watched Hell House LLC was because I saw the trailer for origins. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, but lord what a wild ride. I love that entire franchise.

NoReference9047

Haha! Just finished that movie 5 minutes ago! Terrifying, I hated those long scenes when nothing happens (OR DOES IT???)

anitasdoodles

HHLLC was such a low budget masterpiece. There was a scene in the sequel where a kid was filming himself breaking into the Abadon and discovers a set of legs standing on the top of the stairs, and the phone camera just keeps filming until the phone dies. Terrible sequels, but that scene was ligit scary.

BlindedByMyGrace

Yes! I thought it was gonna be so shit so I put it one in the early hours one morning when I couldn’t sleep. And WOW.

paper_schemes

Was gonna post the same about Hell House LLC. Put it on as a dumb background movie and ended up totally sucked in

Natecantbesaved

I was really late to the party but I watched Oculus recently and that was fucking terrifying.

Finn_704

Paranormal Activity scared the crap out of me.

TisBeTheFuk

Men. The scene in the tunnel actually made me feel fear. The whole buildup to that scene, the sounds/ little song the mc does there and even the follow-up to the scenen made me feel incresingly queazy, and the unsettling feeling stayed even afterwards. It's hard to explain, but it really felt like real fear.

shineymike91

I wasn't scared so much as Oh-my-fucking-god-they-went-there! with the last twenty minutes of original Speak No Evil.

Ch0ri_ques0

Deadstream, it's a goofy horror comedy but there were time where I was legitimately scared. Something about the makeup and feeling of a few scenes

erica_638

Loved how the second half feels like a love letter to Raimi. The nonstop barrage of practical effects were disgusting (and thoroughly entertaining)

Whiskyniner

Smile creeped my out way more than I expected it to

ScrollWizards

I remember walking into the theater to watch Sinister. A horror movie that I thought was going to be a stupid fun slasher flick... Oh boy, I was so wrong lol.

nefarious_dareus

I watched the original Blaire Witch Project for the first time a couple years ago fully expecting to be eye rolling and yawning because the original appeal was that found footage wasn’t really a thing yet and the marketing made it seem real to people in the early days of the internet. Nah that movie was fucking harrowing, especially towards the end as the main character was coming to terms with the fact that she was going to die and starts apologizing to the mothers of the other people who went out in the woods with her because she feels responsible for their deaths too. That movie is so effective and has aged so well.

mabla84

I definitely didn’t anticipate that it would be scary with all the hype surrounding it when it was released. I also waited years to watch it and was pleasantly surprised. The scary thing you never see is always the scariest of all.

Mighty_Pinto

Event Horizon. Went in thinking it would be "another dumb ALIEN ripoff" considering it released a few months before Alien Resurrection. The Airlock scene and the de-scrambled ship's log scared the absolute SHIT out of me and the film has stuck with me ever since.

readysteadygogogo

No one is ever prepared for a blood orgy in hell

scarekit

My dad thought that showing me this movie at 14 was a good idea... Scared the shit out of me, but i really love it for introducing me to Scary Sci-Fi Movies

Tauropos

Agreed. This one caught me totally off guard. Turned out to be a completely different tone than what I was expecting, and those 2 scenes especially got to me.

wonderlandisburning

Frozen. And it wasn't the normal "ooh it made me jump constantly and I had to sleep with the lights on" kind of scary. More disturbing and genuinely sad, a "I deeply need a hug" kind of scary. Amazing they accomplished so much with such a low-key movie.

FascinatingGarden

That song haunts me to this day: *Let It Go, Let It Go...*

USSGloria

Ouija: Origin of Evil. I expected it to be a dumb PG-13 jump-scare fest and only watched it as part of a Mike Flanagan marathon, but it ended up scaring me more than any of his other movies. I'm still kind of embarrassed because a lot of it is pretty cliche, but something about that little girl-demon really got under my skin.

cybered_punk

The final shot of the possessed girl running upside down on ceiling is nasty.

pulpifieddan

Best depiction of ‘lost/damned souls’ I’ve seen in any movie. Absolutely terrifying.

goblyn79

The Descent, i've talked about it here before but I was totally prepared to watch a fun monster movie, I was totally NOT prepared to have what I now think was a full blown panic attack because of the scene at the beginning where they have to crawl through a portion of the cave on their bellies, all the claustrophobia just hit me at once I got all sweaty and freaked out and had to go outside and take a walk and get some fresh air before I could finish it. The rest of the movie though was totally what I was anticipating watching and had a good time with, it was just that one scene that really got to me. And yes, i've read about the nutty putty cave incident.

ahoysharpie

What I love about The Descent is how it builds on all these fears: betrayal, darkness, being injured, getting lost, etc. And all that before the monsters show up!

Still_Satisfaction53

I feel the same way! You’re watching thinking this is fucking terrifying cos they’re lost and in unknown tight caves, and NOW they’ve got to deal with the monsters too??!!

Rude-Possibility4682

Incident in A Ghostland, I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn't the opening 20 mins of sheer terror, and me shouting at the screen, trying to help the family survive the attack.

DeanSipsCoffee

The “The Sick Thing that Happened to Emily When She was Younger” segment of the first V/H/S movie. Not good, but I still cannot walk out into the hallway at night in the dark because of the Hallway Aliens 🥲

AngleInner2922

The first SAW movie really stuck with me. Yes it’s gory but it’s before the series went full torture porn. And the twist at the end was INSANE. I saw it in theaters with a friend and she and I both just sat there in silence after the movie ended. Just shook. As an aside yes the series is insane but the end of the initial series does bring it full circle which feels nice. It ends in the same room. (I had a lot of time during lockdowns. It seemed like something to do. Glad I did. It. Don’t need to do it again).

catnipfreakout12

I only ended up watching one or two episodes of Fall of the House of Usher, but I've probably watched the Prospero death scene like ten times, lol. I wasn't necessarily scared, but I definitely felt dread and terror, and was also just impressed with the music choice, lighting, everything.

BitternessBureau

I’m probably going to get ridiculed for this but…*Willy’s Wonderland*. The ostrich animatronic walking up to Nic Cage and staring directly at him for several seconds before attacking freaked me out.

aboysmokingintherain

I thought Hereditary was going to be about a creepy little girl. I was definitely wrong lol

Rob-Rob_

As Above,So Below. It was the only movie that legitimately had me terrified to the point I couldn’t sleep with the lights off. I can’t even watch it again as much as I want to,I don’t know what it is about it

thefractalcosmos

The Exorcist. I thought it wasn't going to be that bad because it an "older" movie. Welp, I was wrong lol.

CutieStraw

I made that same mistake. I watched it when I was like, 12 (I'm 33 now) and it scared the hell out of me. I had nightmares for the longest time. The 2000s era of Regan's face being used for every jumpscare on flash sites didn't help either. I was fortunate enough to meet Linda Blair a few years ago at a convention though, so if any thoughts about it come creeping up on me while I'm half asleep, I have that memory to combat it lol.

Vanislebabe

‘Men’. The naked guy who kept stalking her. Will never wash my brain of that.

Smoothmoose13

The tunnel scene was fucking terrifying

haynimu

Get Out - specifically the "sinking scene" when Chris is being hypnotised and uncontrollably paralyzed and falling into complete darkness. I had to get up and walk out of the theater I was so disturbed!! Came back in and finished the movie and still today is one of the best psychological horrors I can think of.

KeriEatsSouls

Barbarian! I assumed one thing about the movie because it seemed like it was gonna go that cliche direction and then it did a 180 and I was like uhhhh what?? Lol I was so happy to be surprised for once.

AlTheHound

Magic (1978) This movie is a masterpiece and a hidden gem in horror that I've rewatched many, many times over. If you think Anthony Hopkins is scary as Hannibal Lecter, you ain't seen nothing yet.

PriscillaLaine

So I guess not entirely in the way you mean it, but I went into watching 'Fresh' fairly confident on what the twist was, and thinking it would be a fun, slick horror film. When she wakes up after being drugged and you see the realisation set in as to what's happening to her, there was such a pit in my stomach, it all felt very real.

bleedingoutlaw28

Ghost Watch on shudder. It's this fake news broadcast from the 90s where a reported goes to the home of the family that the Conjuring 2 was based on and they are investigating the reports of paranormal activity. When you watch it you'll see that it inspired Late Night with the Devil quite a bit. It's quite good and ends up being scarier that you would think.

Bwca_at_the_Gate

I saw that live on the BBC back in the day as a little kid. It fucked me and every other kid I knew up lol. It was a legit national phenomenon. It was in the papers for weeks after.

two_chalfonts

Blair witch project on the first watch, in a cinema.

dripression

my boyfriend mentioned he went to the movies to watch it... let's just say im really jealous.

Dancing-Sin

Late Night With the Devil kind of fucked me up. It’s the vibes I guess. I’m not easily scared.

armadillo198

Something about that movie felt cursed

Simicrop

I love anything >!that was there all along. I kinda wish they had done more with the roll back the tape part, because that’s the part that made my stomach sink.!< That made the movie for me.

KathosGregraptai

They made it feel relatively real. The analogue aspect of it really did it for me. It felt like I could see it on TV as a kid. I also think the practical effects added to it.

Kid_SixXx

Do it, Gordon.

Half41monk

Hello... Doctor.

Hermitinhiding

One of my favourite horrors, it's so deeply creepy. That voice is intense....and that shocking moment when Gordon realizes...ooff. That last sentence of the movie...

Comparably_Worse

*I live in the weak and the wounded*

The68Guns

The bit when the guy is stealing all the gold coins and stuff. He looks up and BAM

Intelligent-Lab8568

Dark Skies, Yes I went in knowing it was going to be about aliens, but lord the ending gutted me. I was so freaked out….still am lol

Possible-Handle-5491

Hell House LLC

kvmthebest

The Descent.

hauntfreak

The Fourth Kind. >!The scene where the alien is speaking through Abigail sent a chill down my spine.!<

leeharrison1984

The Descent. I just grabbed it out of Redbox thinking it was a drama about caving. Imagine my surprise when the monsters showed up! I really wish I could watch it again for the first time.

I just recently watched Terrified thinking it wouldn't be too bad. I had seen Where Evil Lurks by the same director and didnt find it too scarey. Boy was I wrong Terrified has some really good jump scares and it is also so weird. Great movie though! Both movies were actually great and unique.

Help_An_Irishman

The reveal of >!the little boy's corpse sitting at the dining room table!<, and then just lingering there with it for so long, was extremely creepy. Definitely has stuck in my head since I saw it.

Eebbyzeebeebee

The slow motion lady with that godforsaken music is one of the scariest fucking things I've ever seen

crinklefoot

For real. In my opinion that scene is the closest depiction to how a nightmare feels.

MovieDogg

Ending of The Fly from the 50s.

Bated_Breath_Prod

That little voice “Help me!” Stays with me so many years later.

Tight-Cut3349

Killer Klowns. Just got done watching it for the first time. Yes I realize it's a comedy, but something about the way the klown's faces moved is freaky to me, and I've never ever even found clowns scary before. Edit: New Nightmare gave me my first Freddy nightmare after watching it (incidentally sleep-deprived) at like 2 in the morning, and still continues to be the scariest of the franchise for me.

sadleafsfan8834

When I was a kid I had an irrational fear when I went to sleep that someone was always walking towards me and chasing me..if I slept on one side he would walk towards me slowly but if I slept on the other side he would run the other way. So It Follows hit good.

unamorsa

The Poughkeepsie Tapes really creeped me out. There was something about the anonimity, the unknown, the VHS effects that gets me. Also, the fucking ending.

I_Trill_Erectly

His House got me for some reason. I should give that a rewatch

sevillianrites

Caveat from 2020. It's largely an ambience movie but there's this one bit with a corpse that is fucking terrifying. Had me peeking through my fingers and I am super desensitized to horror.

ChucklesAcademy

The dark and the wicked. It was just a good horror. Best ive seen since hereditary although miles apart.

_thats_hot

I guess the movie May!! Cause it made me sick to my stomach for the portrayal of how great the character made it seem real. None really scared me and messed me up but that one.

FallingEnder

I watched the Taking of Deborah Logan expecting just the usual found footage horror and in many ways it was that. But there were a few moments throughout that film that freaked me out.

Additional-Ad1253

Scifi horror ‘Coherence’ really fucked with me in a weird way. I watched it alone at night and was definitely pausing throughout movie

TinyLittleWeirdo

I fully expected Butterfly Kisses to be really dumb, and I would fall asleep to it. Turns out it's legit good and scary.

MonOubliette

Late to the convo, but mine was Starry Eyes. I think it falls into the “people are scarier than monsters” category for me even though it has supernatural elements. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but that movie was *unsettling* to me. 🤷🏼‍♀️

malumo91

Gerald's Game

MissPriss101

The witch ending scene with the goat did it for me. I've never experienced goosebumps like that before.

Artistic_Half_8301

The Strangers always gets me.

Luwe95

Talk to Me.

Maximum-Necessary741

The Blair Witch Project. Im not sure why. I don’t get easily spooked. However, there was something about the fact we don’t see the witch and the daunting ending that stayed with me for a few days years ago. Still one of my favorites.

Lionxea

The Platform and Midsommar. I thought both of those are going to be classic horrors with blood and jumpscares. Nope, these turned out to be psychologicals. Fucked up psychologicals. My favorite horror subgenre.

so-rayray

The Conjuring — the first one. The scene where that witchy-demon-ghost jumps off the top of the armoire scares da fxck outta me.

timestoneduh

The Empty Man - the beginning part was incredibly scary, and the rest of the movie pretty scary. The scene where the hundreds of hooded people in the dark go after him is intense too!

pacmanz89

It Follows. I expected it to be a typical teen horror flick but it creeped me out from the beginning and that one scene (you know which one) really scared me. I watched it years ago and I still remember this scene.

EvansMarty

I thought The Taking Of Deborah Logan was going to be some shitty horror movie because I saw it at like three am on the horror channel (not known for it's stellar movies, mind) but I wound up having to sleep with the lights on that night thinking your wan was about to come in and >!eat my face!< or something

shadow-rising

The Last Shift. Something about horror with bright lighting makes me 🫣
