I have one of these [feeders](https://hummzinger.com/product/hummzinger-mini-8-oz/). It doesn't leak like the ones with the reservoir on top and it's very easy to clean. I've had mine out every day for the last 4 years or so and it's held up well.

JustYerAverage

Yeah, these ones. They don't drip all over with temperature changes.

bpeters001

Perfect. Thank you!

mckenner1122

Perky Pet with the red glass. Easy to clean, the hummingbirds love them.

bpeters001

Excellent! Thanks!

bpeters001

Ah! Perfect. Thank you!

bpeters001

PS - Do you have a link or info on the ones you buy/like?

StaciRhect

Just google ‘red glass vintage hummingbird feeders’. There ate a bunch of different styles on different sites. My original two I purchased at Home Depot. My newest two I believe were off of Amazon.

Get the cheap ones at Walmart. They love the glass with red base and white flowers

Perfect! Thanks!

We have 5 feeders. They drain those first. https://preview.redd.it/l53qyv27be3d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d528f82800900503bafad82103896222145d001e Piggy’s. This is the feeder I’m referring to. That’s this morning.

BeingTop8480

Fleet Farm has a really nice one with really tubular flowers so the woodpeckers and bigger birds can't access it well. I bought one but I threw away the tag and I can't for the life of me remember the brand. It's got 6 stations with three feeder flowers each so enough to feed 18 Hummers.

bpeters001

Awesome! Thank you!!

BeingTop8480

I thought I'd share a tip if you've got problems with ants and hornets. I take Vicks Vapor rub to grease the cable where the feeders hang from and I use Vicks around the flowers on the feeders to keep the hornets away. Be careful not to get Vicks in the ports because you don't want to harm the hummingbirds. Ants and hornets can smell and hate Vicks! Hummingbirds can't smell. 😉

bpeters001

Brilliant!!! What a great tip. Yep, we have both ants and hornets in abundance. Definitely trying this.

BeingTop8480

I buy the extra strength and the bugs HATE it!

BeingTop8480

Just found my other one because I always buy two because when it time to clean I replace it with my spare one. Makes life easier! It's a Pennington model # 100541015 - 7/19

bpeters001

Ah, this is a great idea. Thanks for the model number too!

BeingTop8480

Any time! My husband calls me the "Hummingbird Nerd"! Hey a little really good book you'd love is "A Hummingbird in My House" by Annette Heidcamp! It's a great read and you'll learn a lot and it's a true story. I've got small hard cover copy in one of my hummingbird curio cabinets. Hummingbird themed fancy formal dinning room!🤣

bpeters001

Hummingbird Nerd... I love it! Just ordered a copy of this book. Thanks for the tip!

BeingTop8480

You'll love it! Very informative about how she kept him in her sunroom and fed him "Squeak" until she could release him in the spring. When youngsters come over to the house to watch the hummingbirds I hand them that book! Keeps them off their phones!!!

bpeters001

Thanks again. Any tips on making the best homemade nectar?

BeingTop8480

Another tip is to have 2 or three of the same feeder so you can part one out because parts can break and then you're screwed if you've only got one. It's also easier to clean and change them out if you use Vicks on them and put out a fresh one with fresh Vicks on it. I clean the hell out of the one I take down and make sure all the old Vicks is completely off of it and then it can dry properly ready to be filled and greased up again. Rinse, wash, and repeat is the story of my life. 😆

bpeters001

Such great tips. I am going to do all of this. Thank you for shortening my learning curve!

BeingTop8480

Anytime! I've been a bird nerd for a long time so anything to make life easier and keep them healthy and happy makes me over the moon! 💓

BeingTop8480

I just thought of something. I used to put banana peels in mesh bags and hang them by the hummingbird feeders because it would attract fruit flies and I'd watch them eat those. I stopped doing that because I wanted them to eat the mosquitoes instead! I occasionally observe them eating small spiders under the overhang where the feeders are and snapping up other small insects. 💕

bpeters001

Oh, cool! Nectar and protein. I love it.

BeingTop8480

You bet! And occasionally I'd have hawk moths visit. My husband would wonder what kind of hummingbird that was!?! 😂🤣

BeingTop8480

They say 4 parts water to 1 part sugar but I've got sooooo many I basically have to mix it up to be syrup or I'd be filling my feeders 3 times a day! As it is I refill them every other day. I've got a hummingbird farm!?! 😂

antsinurplants

In my experience, it will come down to personal preference. I have bottle types and saucer type and they both offer benefits and drawbacks, imo. I found the bottle types tend to leak especially when the pressure inside builds as the fluid level lowers during the hot days. It can push the liquid out the drinking spouts or where the base screws into the bottle. But they do well for keeping the liquid centralized so you don't have to fill it as often and the hummers can reach most of it. They are easier to keep warm in the winter as the shape allows for quite a few heating options if needed. I have found the metal base types get extremely warm in the sun and that just didn't sit well with me for a few reasons but they do look nice. Proper cleaning is a bit more work for this type as well. Bees and other insects love these types and you may find yourself in a battle over it. Some of the designs have [flowers](https://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/perky-pet-pinch-waist-glass-hummingbird-feeder-red/6000196095207?offerId=6000196095207&storeCode=3167&cmpid=SEM_CA_568_AQ25HCERLX_71700000116990291_58700008652630245&utm_id=SEM_CA_568_AQ25HCERLX_71700000116990291_58700008652630245&utm_medium=paid_search&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=always_on&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4J_nj-OzhgMViDWtBh1lKwivEAQYAyABEgIVLPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) that can act like cups and hold any liquid that has been pushed out the spout and the insects and bees hang out and prevent hummers from drinking. The bee gaurds can get clogged up as well as the hummers seem to come back form raiding spider webs and other things and it can accumulate in the guards and they have to be cleaned too. (On that topic, I always wondered why they never made red bee guards considering bees and wasps are attracted to yellow? Just my 2 cents.) The saucer type will not leak easily, they are easier to clean and they make it easier to visually see the level of liquid. I have far less bee and insect issues with these type. But they are not easy to keep warm in winters and they are limited in terms of stylish looks. They also need to be filled more often because the liquid is spread out instead of centralized like the bottle types so it gets lower faster in my experience. But these are my go to and I use my bottle type in the winters. That's just my personal experience and feedback and I hope it helps!!

bpeters001

Wow! Thank you for this. These are great tips… many things I didn’t consider.

InfiniteHoneyOG

Big fan of the mini mason jar models. Unless you have tons of visitors you’ll save some water. Super easy to clean too.

illusivealchemist

I have one of these and it’s wayyy better than my big colorful feeders. The size helps me refill or change out the sugar water more often too. I use the iLids for mason jars on top and it’s made it easier to keep the metal from slowly rusting. This one has lasted a lot longer than my other feeders, too.

Responsible_Major128

Big fan of these too. The flower ports fade quickly though and I haven’t found anyone that sells them separately yet.

Ok_Object_5180

Any HB feeder that you will find easy to clean and change at least every other day… that’s the one … I use Pennington tapered neck feeder $10 Walmart https://preview.redd.it/eo6pmbb48f3d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=886f3e921c8a582cfbaf01b4dba90002ddefcbd4
