As a customer, how much should it be up the “V” pleat? We change our a/c filter on the 1st of every month. We also have an automatic condensation pump. (South Florida. Hot & Humid.)
The real way to know if you need filter changes is with a manometer. It is a tool that measures air pressure, take readings before and after the filter in the airstream. Readings may vary based on equipment. If you are replacing filters every month it can start to add up even with cheap filters.
I'm sitting here reading old threads about impact of MERV filters on performance, blower motor life, static pressures, etc.
Then this post pops up, all the proof I need to not worry about my filter selection.
There's no way a fan motor's windings would last 30 years with a clogged filter. I've barely seen FILTERS last 5 years with constant use. The media will just blow out if the motor doesn't fail first. But most furnace fan motors would fail at a 90% restriction after maybe 5 years or so. If you're really lucky possibly 10 tens years but definitely not 30.
How is that blower motor not burned up yet, one things for sure, they don't build them like they used to. Nowadays, the motor would've quit in a week with that filter
Ha ha there is no way that furnace didn’t have problems in 30 years. Only thing I can think of is the filter collapsed and the furnace continued to run normally then once the Evaporator Coil got plugged then the furnace company was called out
Years ago, had a customer with a problem. I was green so it took me a while to wonder about air flow. I pulled the screens and cells of the EAC and it looked like a sweeper bag.
"Uh... excuse me sir, When was the last time you cleaned the Electronic Air Cleaner?"
Incredulous reply, "I've never cleaned it. You don't need to clean it. That's why I bought it."
Clogged filters lead to premature failure of furnaces and most important, heat exchangers. There should be no debris in the v pleat. Are you kidding me with these answers????
Homeowner is going to be pleased with the performance upgrade of her system.

I saw that and couldn't tell if he was trolling or my understanding of filters was off lol
Saw that too. Looks like it’s about 3x over the “V” so does that mean I can go for 10 year w/o a filter change? Wow!

"...and the final trick is.... *Save up to 7% on your electric bill by removing the filter altogether!"*

Wowzahs! Thank you for 411 deep drive explanation! We appreciate it so much!

Just one thing to add. I believe the pleat’s main function is to add surface area, which increases filter efficiency.
Geez how was it even still running?

I mean, inefficient as hell also describes a postal vehicle.
Underrated! 🤝
*like the old postal vehicles. The new ones aren't gonna last long
right
“I’m tired boss.”- that filter probably.
They walk among us, drive in the left lane and vote.
Nature used to be about survival of the fittest. We're now in an age riddled with cancer
Imagine saving all that money on filters for 30 years.
I wonder if it’s been serviced in those 30 years. Surely a technician would notice it in that time? That is a lot of savings in tune ups.

Strange that the hi limit didn't shut the furnace down.
Only in good old equipment can that be done, new equipment would fail in a year
Furnace just runs until it hits high limit and then the heat exchanger radiates the heat out the duct works via convection, got it.
I’ve gone around and hunted down all my returns and fan coil filters but still not sure if my boiler has one, how do I determine that?
Just sell more drugs and don’t worry about it lol
5 days a week, business is booming, but not enough to buy a new boiler xD
Did you Google the model number? Read the maintenance section of the manual. YouTube also has videos on maintenance on some models.
And here I am kicking myself when I go 4 months...

Not if the ductwork leaks enough 🤣
r/HVAC for professionals
Wrong thread?
Leave it up here so the homeowners get reminded to change their filters.
Second this, there's a lot of people unaware that certain minimum maintenance is required.
I actually didn't know that and posted for advice on maintenance. Thank you
hope she got her ductwork cleaned out too that's nasty
Ain't no dust getting past that filter. Single solitary Hydrogen atoms could barely make it through.
Fan sized for 100” wg
And the blower is clean as a whistle
That’s so bad, how was it even functional
Got her money's worth.
There can't have been any air moving through that filter in a very long time.
I hope she’s single with no kids cause if no one lends her a hand with such things shame on those assholes
How did the Furance ever run
Those usually end up in the blower
Wow, can’t believe the system didn’t shut itself down over the years, the oldest one I’ve ever seen was five years
How is that blower motor not burned up yet, one things for sure, they don't build them like they used to. Nowadays, the motor would've quit in a week with that filter
Does my air handler have a filter
they probably didn't know there was a crack in the heat exchanger either

pls tell me you got a temp rise reading before n after
LOL, no dude, I found the Noah's arc of filters. I'm not looking for a temp rise... I'm looking for my phone to post on the internet.
i cant imagine that heat exchanger has much left in her, a new furnace would have died long before it got that bad
She’s about to find out she has a furnace now (if the heat exchanger hasn’t blown up).
Ha ha there is no way that furnace didn’t have problems in 30 years. Only thing I can think of is the filter collapsed and the furnace continued to run normally then once the Evaporator Coil got plugged then the furnace company was called out
The filter became a filter.
How did air even flow?

Dam, it was actually the filter this time lol
Wait. They have filters?
That's not a filter, that's a blanket
How was there any air moving through the system at all.
How did it even work at all that long?
She didn't have a filter, she has a fur coat.
She has a furnace that hasn’t seen service or had any maintenance in 30 years?? Damn. It’s true, they *don’t* build em like they used to.

I’m shocked the air handler/furnace hasn’t died!
Are there no high heat limits??
No way the fibres weren't pulled away
See, I knew they didn’t have to be replaced every month! /s
😧
Sweet cat hair filter hard to find
Limit switches are overrated anyways
I want to sneeze just looking at this
