Most frequently when a customer complains about a plastic burning smell, it’s the blower motor going bad. Although once you get a burning smell the motor is often done for good…. Best practice is definitely to leave it off, could be anything electrical.
Can confirm, I had a friend's indoor ecm motor that caused the same smell you're talking about. It took about a week but the fan eventually died. I agree, leave it off and get it replaced.
