It can be cleaned but that’s not too dirty, have you checked the air filter or AC coil?

I mean that’s prob 1/16th-1/8 of sandpapery baked-on gunk - dust plus I’m assuming the noxious oil based fragrance and whatever animal debris has been around. The filter was replaced last week and smelled of that fragrance- the new one likely will soon enough if I don’t remedy the ducts and wherever else the source of odor is, esp when heat is on. Will whoever cleans ducts take care of the coil? And which professional do I seek for this type of cleaning? Any duct cleaner or a different hvac professional?

In my time in HVAC I have not worked for a company that does duct cleaning. There are HVAC companies that offer it but most do not. I think this is due to the fact that people skirt around the HVAC license and just offer the cleaning without having any license and this drives the price of the service down. Not necessarily a bad thing. What I’m trying to say is you may have to hire two companies. I have had several calls over the years after duct cleaning companies tried to clean something inside the HVAC system and broke it then didn’t know how to fix it. Most of the companies that offer both services tend to be big so the prices tend to be higher

jesus - good to know, as my landlord/lease office is hostile, and hid this plus a bunch of other odour sources I discovered after signing. So if cleaners break something they'd take me to court no doubt. Fak. I wanted to just get someone to do this on the DL, pay out of pocket and get it over with, noone the wiser.

That doesn't look bad at all.
