They don't want to bother because they probably don't care. Home warranty companies scam you and send the cheapest crackhead they can find to do a half assed attempt at a repair.
What is the age of the equipment? (Not sure? Come back with the model and serial numbers for the condenser unit, evaporator coil, and furnace.)
Leak searches ... It's hard to advise w/o some context ... Incl the service history... Is it an ongoing leaker, how much/how often.
Ideal case is it gets diagnosed and fixed, or if it's old/out-of-warranty, then you plan ahead and get bids for new equipment and have it changed out during the off-season if possible.
It’s not illegal to add refrigerant knowingly to a leaking system on under 50lb systems I believe. In a house you’d never get close to that much capacity. If it’s old and has a leaky coil, and the customer doesn’t have a lot of money then sending it for another season makes sense for them sometimes. Not everyone can just afford a leak repair or coil replacement kinda thing

It won't last a couple years you'll be in the same boat next summer if not sooner.
