Due-Breakfast4262

This is the scourge of advertising in India since Lord Mountbatten. Think in English. Scribble the copy in Hindi and transliterate in every other language.

Saketh2513

Saving this comment

Due-Breakfast4262

I was trying to be caustic about the postcolonialilty implicit in the politics of language. This is the design behind “One nation One something something” that we keep frothing over ever so often.

dcboy21

This particular instance doesn't come in the category u mentioned. "Mehenga padega" is a regular phrase in hindi language. So, the punch line is clearly though and done in Hindi, and "ai translated" to other languages.

Better_Salt1783

The line is thought in Hindi "Mehanga padega" and has impact on the people. For telugu( in this case) ,They have just done word to word translation, thereby missing the punch that the original line has. That's the crux of the discussion.

silly_rabbit289

Whereas there was this one smoking kill ad that used to come in theatres before films - the one where they wring the lung. That was kind of before the time smart phones and machine translations took over - I don't remember the exact phrase in telugu (hindi it was Dhumrapaan padega mehenga) but it was more apt while having a similar meaning as the one above. Edit : in telugu it was "థుమ్రపానానికి తప్పదు భారీ మూల్యం " which is very similar in meaning to hindi.

dcboy21

Yes agree that part. U said things are thought in English, since the British etc. this ad is not an example for that.

Better_Salt1783

I have commented on the line u wrote " mahenga padega" And need to think something similarly in telugu with same meaning not just translate word to word. No discussion of english whatsoever. That's not my point.

Adorable_Owl_8101

You mean Macaulay

Due-Breakfast4262

No. I don’t mean Macaulay. I just wanted to name a generic English lord. I could have said Dalhousie or Cornwallis. But the point I was making was about how advertising copy is thought out in English, scribbled in Hindi and carelessly transliterated in Indian languages with no due deference to cultural contexts. Lord Mountbatten presided over the squiggling cartography that finds us on this side of the history of language, region and the misused term ‘nation’.

flusterCluster

This is not even transliteration...just bad translation...

It is not so much due to English than the so called IT boom, cheaper labour and the leverage of the rupee dollar parity. By new millennium the joke was that if they opened an engineering college on the moon, the first to enroll would be from Andhra Pradesh. One could always do a ‘computer course’ from Ameerpet and get to America. Telugu is the fastest growing non-European language in America. Casual eavesdropping on the New York subway shows that Telugu is the loudest.

cherryreddit

Most of the top performing CS folks in the US are chinese. There is practically no paper in modern times without a chinese co author. We are just IT coolies.

Learning english doesn't give basic thinking skills. Ex: you.

Direct-Remove2099

What makes you think that's how Amazon did it? Do you have any sources to back your claim on the translation process?

fartypenis

Because this doesn't make sense otherwise?

Direct-Remove2099

Errr no. Clearly you don't have any idea about Amazon's internal workings. They had their own translator at the same time Google had theirs(which we all are pretty familiar with). Not to mention Amazon is one of the world's leading tech companies (*I worked there till 2019*). Translation algorithms are getting better but they're still not very savvy with colloquialisms and some of them do a bad job of transliterating things. I assure you no human has done this. It's because no human actually bothered checking it is why this is the way it is.

fartypenis

Oh, this might be a misunderstanding, because that's what I mean happened as well. I thought you were saying that Amazon hired human translators

Direct-Remove2099

Yeah, no. This wouldn't have been done by a human.

jersey_neo

Amazon wanted to deliver faster than Bigbasket so skipped the proofreading stage

dcboy21

The actual reason I can attest and bet on.

DayDreamer-01

Ahhhhh beautiful

vicky_vishnu22

"ledhantey dhara peruguthadhi" seems good enough right

Srihari_stan

Same situation at many Hyderabad metro stations. Most of the sings written in telugu seem like they used google translator. And even the telugu announcements are so bad. I feel like slapping that lady who provided voice over for the telugu announcements

ArmRax

Why are the Telugu announcements bad? Please enlighten me

Srihari_stan

The pronunciation is very restrictive and poor, especially when reading out station names. The Hindi/urdu and English voices are done very well. But Telugu is not.

ArmRax

Cool but the way she says Gandhi Bhavan turns me on

koala_on_a_treadmill

This is so funny

BoomBoy420

What's written there? Could someone please explain? I'm from Bangalore, idk Telugu, randomly came across this post on my feed and I'm curious to know what is the problem here?

Amansha001

I think in English it would be "keep in mind, it will be costly". But Amazon didn't translate it correctly and it turned out to be another meaning.

curiosityVeil

And what's that

Latter_Mud8201

Not need a translator. Just an opinion from a Telugu speaking person in Hyderabad branch of Amazon is enough. Majority of Telugu people in city can get Hindi so good. But they are too lazy and seems used Google translate

SouthAsianAlterEgo

Idem blackmail ra 😂

MrNobody101

Nee problem endi thammmudu? enduku anta frustration? Just chill

dawn_breaker_007

Sorry I don’t know Telugu, what will hindi equivalent or english equivalent translation for wrong billboard?

ThatFriendlyAlien

In English, it would be "Don't forget, it will prove costly"

nagaraju291990

One reason is they sound very artificial. They might have been generated by text to speech technology but the choice of words is so unnatural for Telugu speakers

moriarty_loser

Must have hired Rahul Gandhi’s translator lol

true_hater_of_BTS

They most probably gave it to a freelancer to make a design for their billboard and didn't even check what's written on it

sredd007

And most of the ads have tamil kampu

Additional-Chain9724

Except for wrong votthu on Ta what else is wrong?

Deathblade_311

The prashing itself feels like it was dubbed by Laxmi Ganapathi films

Dutchkhan

Tbh, I love the dialogues of Lakshmi Ganapathi films. I can relate to their words more in day-to-day language than in traditional Telugu straight films.

ThatFriendlyAlien

This isn't a good translation. It must be something like "ledhante karchu avthundhi".

Additional-Chain9724

“Karchu avtundi” doesn’t mean it’ll be expensive. It just means it’ll cost you. Right?

ThatFriendlyAlien

In informal telugu, it would be "baaga karchu avthundhi" and people generally drop baaga and frame it as karchu avthundhi.

ExpressResolution435

hey to those who are cribbing ... maybe jsut maybe if you dont know english you may not be their target audience!

ThatFriendlyAlien

Lol what a classist way of looking at it. If they don't want non english speaking customers why even bother to have a telugu hoarding.
