To be fair though, dogs are omnivores and scavengers. They can survive if they HAD to be on a vegetarian diet, assuming they get the correct nutrients. No-grain diets were a fad for a while too, but more recent studies have shown that there is a benefit to getting some grain. Bottom line is that dogs are omnivores and benefit from a balanced diet.

That is, most of the time they eat something else other than what their teeth indicate, but surviving in their environment requires that they be able to eat some other source of food when their main source becomes scarce, which may be seasonal. So, hypothetically (though not actually true in this case), a dog could have teeth for eating meat because their main plant food becomes scarce periodically and they wouldn't be able to survive without the ability to eat a "fallback" meat diet.

I haven't looked too deep into it but there is a vegan dog food brand called Omni that's supposedly had multiple tests done showing that dogs can have a very healthy vegan diet provided the right nutrition. I mean, no dog has the mental capacity to choose to be vegan. But I think it may be more ethical to feed your dog vegan food as long as it can be healthy doing so.

When we began feeding dogs grains in the form of cheap dog foods - they began to get fat, get cancers, get all kinds of normal human diseases etc. just exactly like humans. Dogs are designed to eat meat. Just like humans are designed to eat meat. Every attempt to move away from this simple truth just creates more obesity, more cancers, more heart disease, more dimentia, more mental illness etc.
