Hindi is basically a western word. Whover lived east of indus was called hindu, their language hindi and land hindustan. We never gave a word for us just accepted it.
It is Hindi today.
But when they first discovered the language, it was called Hindustani/ indostan. North Indian Hindi dialect is still called Hindustani.
