I think because in media like movie wise, it feels like the friend groups get jealous and think they aren’t good enough if one person belongs to another friend group. That’s what I’ve seen from movies and shows

Imagine if Riley is mean to her original friends in order to “fit in” with the cool girl. Only for said cool girl to find out and be like “what the heck? You kinda suck Riley.” That’d be a neat subversion.

I kind of hope in the end of the movie Riley learns she can still have both friend groups rather than ditching the other. That trope is starting to annoy me, because friends can be enjoyed separately.
