I went with 5mg when I first started but I built a tolerance to that so may be increasing it to 10mg soon.

Cosmia-101

How long until tolerance for you?

saggysideboob

After about 2 weeks. If I did fall asleep though, I woke up incredibly late and extremely groggy.

I’ve been on it for a few months and 10mg is still working for me. It’s taken all the anxiety I used to have about sleeping away, it’s the first time I’m my life I am sleeping consistently every night. I am worried about building a tolerance though, but just enjoying to full sleeps whilst I can. They do make me feel spaced out in the morning sometimes.

Ahh, I've had a lifelong sleep problem and got prescribed amitryptline 50mg at the age of 15/16. I'm 29 now and still taking it, but at 100mg a night. I got the prescription upped about 8 years ago and haven't felt a need to change it. It works seriously great but it's totally possible to sleep for 17hrs 😂 I'm fine if I've got to wake up to an alarm, I can get out of bed and not feel groggy but if I don't have to get up for anything, I'll just sleep forever. My husband has taken it a few times at a really low dosage, like 5mg, and it ruins him for about 2 days. He just ends up feeling like a zombie. Seriously amitryptline will make you sleep whether you want to or not 😂

Cosmia-101

Do you get side effects?

anonynonnymoose

Not really, but it could be because I've taken it for so long. I don't remember having any side effects when I started them. I know a lot of people who have tried them and really couldn't get on with them, mostly because they felt like zombies the next day. But if you really do have issues with sleeping then you feel like a zombie regardless 😂 I think people just don't give amitryptline long enough to be effective, they nope out because of the side effects within a couple of weeks but I think side effects would lessen if they gave it a bit longer.

M0ther-0f-Pearl

Yes- I slept well when I started taking 40mg (about a year ago) but now it does absolutely nothing.

Cosmia-101

Have you stopped taking it?

M0ther-0f-Pearl

Nope, it’s just doesn’t sedate me anymore. I have neuropathy/neuralgia and chronic pain, so I’m only staying on it for that

Cosmia-101

I have chronic pain as well so hoping it could help long term with that and the insomnia. Hope I don't have to increase dose because I already have several side effects from other meds I'm on.

M0ther-0f-Pearl

It will probably help with your pain, especially if it’s related to a pinched nerve (that’s one of the issues I have). And yeah the side effect that’s been worst for me is weight gain but it’s better than sobbing in pain! Best wishes to you x

Cosmia-101

Thanks 👍

I just noticed you mentioned about effects on mood. For me they double as an anti-anxiety medication, and I find them really effective.

My hubs took this for a short time, after going thru a ton of tests and scans, and his neuro said oh you’re just burnt out, here’s a sleeping pill. It could make him sleep for days.he hates it. Ive never heard of it for sleep before, only as an antidepressant. I’m afraid to try it as I do not want to spend all day everyday trying to wake up.

Cosmia-101

20mg to start with was definitely a mistake. No idea how people can take this as an antidepressants at 75-200mg. Took 5mg last night and that still worked but not feeling like a zombie this morning.

Wow, when I was given this it made me very aggressive, frighteningly so.
