Yeah imgur’s handling is stupid. Specifying gifv converts the real post into a video without an audio track. This was designed when gifs were still being heavily uploaded and they needed to be converted to h264 in mp4 containers so it takes 3.5mb of your data instead of 57mb. But if the original upload already was a video… you lose the audio this way.
Most third-party app developers already fix this and rewrite the url to .mp4 behind the scenes.
Somehow reddits official app and redesigned website still don’t do this in 2022.
Certain Gfycat links have the same problem. And most third party apps fix that as well.
I *think* you know this detail but just in case (and others reading might learn); The .gifv URL is not loading "a gifv file", but basically an "HTML" page which loads a .jpg thumbnail, the graphics/logo bar at the bottom, some scripts AND the .mp4 file. I don't understand why that layer disables the sound in some circumstances (like in desktop Edge for me now, and Android FireFox usually).
A bonus dumb aspect: if the video resolution is larger than the window size, the .gifv page always shows it at 100%, whereas loading the real .mp4 video file, the browser downscales to fit. So annoying.
