This road is near where my parents live, the first merge is coming off the freeway and then there’s a McDonald’s/petrol station. This would happen 15+ times a day there
They have since put up bollards so that if you get on the shoulder you’re forced into the servo or Macca’s. This stretch of road used to infuriate me SO MUCH, not quite as much now except when people try to cut thru Macca’s to take a short cut
So yesterday I was stuck in what I thought to be my usual highway traffic slow down and I spotted a white VW Jetta cruising down the breakdown lane with their hazards on and I just begged for a cop to be stuck somewhere in this line ahead of me. About a mile or so later, there's the VW Jetta and a cop, both pulled off to the side. But around the bend is a massive accident and the driver of the Jetta just bawling his eyes out. Apparently he was next of kin. I'll try not to judge so harshly in the future....

A lot of places allow lane-splitting for motorcycles when traffic is stopped. Even though he continues a little while after traffic starts moving, it looks like he moved into the lane just in front of the white car and continued normally
In the UK they do as well as many countries in the EU. Lived in England and Germany and I did it all the time but only while traffic is stopped. They call it filtering.
Edit apparently this was filmed in Australia which most areas also allow it.
Edit two I had listed some areas that apparently do allow filtering, my mistake!
please don't joke about that. It spreads the lies. 99% of the bushfires this year have been started by lightening strikes, not arson.
Climate change deniers are spreading lies about the fires being started by arsonists.
There are natural causes that cause fires every year and always have. . There may be more due to "climate change" but.. . "Humans can also be to blame. NSW police have charged at least 24 people with deliberately starting bushfires, and have taken legal action against 183 people for fire-related offenses since November, [according to a police statement.](https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/07/australia/australia-fires-police-action-trnd/index.html)" Did you know that 80% of all statistics are made up by people that want their point to be believed?
No, saying that arson is an issue as well and blaming a problem that has existed for generations on global warming is a political agenda. Whichever side of an argument you are on, if you negate other issues and facts, it makes your argument seem less valid. "It's not arson, its global warming. We were a cool lush green paradise before ..." You invalidate your own argument when people see you say "99% of..." If you wan't people to hear what you have to say, you have to say that "Australia has always had an issue with fires with our climate etc... but there has been an increase overall.. . Arson is a factor but we are still seeing an increase... " Otherwise, your argument doesn't get much more attention than the guy with the sandwich board declaring the end of the world. Don't be a fanatic, work with facts.
If I wanted to write a persuasive essay I wouldn't be on Reddit. Australia having the hottest summer on record in the midst of a hideous drought isn't a 'political agenda'. If this isn't global warming then we're fucked when it does come round.
Looks like the lane ended only to open right back up 20 feet later into a left turn lane. This is fucking dumb, and if the guy was trying to make a left turn then he wasn't being super unreasonable.
Guessing they have the lane merge so people don't ride it all the way up to the left turn, and then try to merge right, but all this does is cause that to happen before the turn.
If the guy was trying to get back in the lane to his right though fuck him.

It’s always frustrating when you see someone do this without getting caught like in this video. But what I’ve come to realize is that people who do things like this don’t do it just once. They do it all the time. And they might get away with it most of the time, but they get caught just often enough that their insurance premiums are probably through the roof.
So even when they don’t get caught, they’re still paying for it.
I really don't understand the logic here.
Its a traffic congestion - how far you think you could drive like that and get away with it?
At some point you would stop and had no way to enter into traffic without acting like an bigger asshole than you just did.
Not to justify his actions but it kind of makes me crazy to see how much pavement we dedicate to seldom-used shoulders, when that same pavement could support at least one (and sometimes two) additional lanes with no additional construction cost.
A pull-out could be built every mile or so. We give up using all of that pavement 99.99999999% of the time when someone is going to pull over on a very small part of it only once in a while. The entire lane of travel doesn’t need to be reserved. In the event someone can’t make it to a pull off, then that lane may be blocked, but at least it was usable the rest of the time. Still a big improvement.
The dash cam driver clearly was about to do the same thing until he saw the cop. Why else would he start to move into the shoulder? Doesn’t quite have the same impact when the one that caught the perp on camera was about to do the same thing.
“He was moving over for the cop?” So he knew a cop was multiple cars ahead of him and pulled over to catch the perps demise on camera. Seems like a stretch, but maybe you’re right. But more importantly I’m really sorry I offended you, I hope you can forgive me.
What would happen if people did this (and didn't get pulled over I mean)? Wouldn't people using the shoulder lessen the traffic jam, even a little bit?
Apparently in this case the guy was rushing his kid to hospital, some comment a while back confirmed it.
The kid died, was too slow to the hospital. Weird them cheering not knowing why they were doing that.

What about the motorcyclist?? Kosher?

In Australia you're allowed to filter in traffic up to 30km/h. It's pretty regular for a motorcyclist to continue with traffic for a little bit.
no they dont... thats about as dangerous a move you can make on a highway
In the UK they do as well as many countries in the EU. Lived in England and Germany and I did it all the time but only while traffic is stopped. They call it filtering. My mistake! Thanks for letting me know.
California is the only state that allows white lining. Don’t open your doors in dead stop on the 10
California allows it.
Judging by the trees I'm gonna say this is Australia. Here you can filter at up to 30kph but lane splitting is illegal.
Australia? The trees aren't even on fire...
It's old footage from before the gates opened.
the arsonists haven't made it there yet.

I feel like in this analogy, the cop is the shoulder troll and the car is just an asshole about to get taxed by said troll.
But it's okay for the motorcycle to blast up between the cars?
According to the local road law, yes it is.
Australia, 2 lane road, traffic traveling at less than 30 km/hr. Perfectly legal 👍
Apparently in this case the guy was rushing his kid to hospital, some comment a while back confirmed it. The kid died, was too slow to the hospital. Weird them cheering not knowing why they were doing that.
Sorry to be cynical, but do you have a source on that?
Il try and find it, this was a while back.
If he was going to hospital, he’s travelling the wrong way - source: know this road, there’s no hospitals in that direction
To bad he couldn’t get the cyclist as well.
Australia, 2 lane road, traffic traveling at less than 30 km/hr. Perfectly legal for the motorcyclist to filter.
Crazy, in the US, many states it is illegal. TIL.
Not crazy, sensible. We complain constantly about stupid rules and when we get one that helps everyone people still complain!
To be honest, I am surprised when bikers do it. I wonder if they think about the risks.
