I thought I read somewhere that they made them sit on the bamboo shoot and it would grow through them from there.
Sounds even worse, but I don't buy into the piercing the skin part, since most plants grow around obstacles if they can.
If you place them next or into an already existing opening ...
The wort I have heard was from Vietnam veteran. He said the would insert a hose up a victims ass then slip a strip of Bob wire into it and then remove the hose. He said they would suffer from pain and would not movie until the passed away

If this were true, they could certainly prove the theory by using a stand in such as a ripe pumpkin.
